Abstract:
This article sheds light on two key “transprovincial” moments in the history of the Lyon-based Académie Provinciale (1826), a sort of contre-académie and local alternative to the Paris-based Académie française: 1) the admission of Breton poet Élisa Mercœur (1809–1835) as a “membre correspondant” and 2) the publication of the Préludes poétiques by Franc-Comtois Aimé de Loy (1798–1834) as the first volume in the “Bibliothèque de l’Académie Provinciale”. Building on a “transprovincial” framework inspired by non-linear epistemologies, the article highlights the importance of the Académie Provincia

The National Institute of Science and the Arts, founded in 1795, consists of parallel academies, concerned with science, literature, the visual arts and so on. In the nineteenth century it represented a unique government-sponsored intellectual authority and a supreme court judgement, a power which came to be resented by innovators of all kinds. The Académie des sciences held a virtual monopoly in representing French science but soon this came to be challenged. In the period of the Second Empire (1852–70) we find a group of men carving out a new career for themselves as professional popularizer

The Amiens concours attempted to offer a timely commemoration of the slave trade's abolition. Close readings of the competition's archival records, including twelve submitted poems and two reports, suggest reasons why a winner was never chosen. The early-modern French translations of Erasmus’ Praise of Folly show an astonishing adaptability to its ever changing readerships. Much attention has been paid recently to the two sixteenth-century translations (1518 and 1520) and their intended readers—royal and bourgeois respectively. The three French translations of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries are less known but all the more intriguing. In 1642 Folly addresses herself to the French pre-classicist readers, adepts of Richelieu’s new Académie Française—although her translator, Hélie Poirier, was a Protestant refugee, recently set

Elles correspondent plutôt à une logique de périodicité, révélant Les Caractères comme une plateforme médiatique qui permit à La Bruyère d’intervenir dans la
