Abstract:

This dissertation reviews the extensive literature on the history of academia and education in historical context, distilling it into a concise storyline, followed by a concentrated focus on the French and German university models, departmentalization, and subsequent reactions to it. The extensive documentation provides a detailed sketch for the motivated scholar to elaborate upon with further reading. Hopefully, the interdiciplinary approach has something to offer most academics. The literature review also helped guide development of a survey assessing student educational experiences in contemporary academia (Cronbach’s α = 0.717). The endeavor included a far-reaching journey of field research across every continent of the world except Antarctica. A total of 273 universities were assessed. Qualitative notes were taken, which may lead to an illustrated travelogue, but the current dissertation aim was to survey undergraduates with the new instrument (N = 1,495 undergraduates). Results show the majority of students were pleased with the education they were receiving, though their program requirements prevented them from studying other subjects of interest, and opportunities to take interdisciplinary courses were limited. Most students found their professors available for guidance, but did not find opportunities to collaborate on publishable research with them. Furthermore, most students did not intend to submit their work for publication, but would be more inclined to submit to a student run journal, if one was available. Finally, most students believe it is important to spend a semester or more aboard, or at affiliate university campuses, but they find the expense and logistical problems a deterrent. In closing, policy considerations are proposed as possible solutions to the problems uncovered by the survey results. The limitations and contributions of this research are discussed. Theoretically, this research places the new global network university model within the context of historical developments. It expands the construct for rating universities beyond standard criteria for rankings to include the issues mentioned above. Methodologically, this research advances the field of university rating systems by providing a new reliable measurement tool. Practically, the survey instrument increases awareness of several issues that need attention in order to improve the educational experiences of university undergraduates.

Harte, Patrick. "An analysis of EHEA Business School approaches to the development, configuration and management of international academic alliances." Thesis, Edinburgh Napier University, 2016. http://researchrepository.napier.ac.uk/Output/976954.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to investigate the motivations for international academic alliance development, the configuration of alliance networks and their sustained management in Business Schools within the European Higher Education Area (EHEA). A purposive sample of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) engaged with international alliance activities was selected from seven Business Schools within the target markets of France, Germany and Scotland. In order to investigate issues inherent within international alliance development this sample provided access to academic and administrative elites competent to discuss their alliance portfolios, from a strategic perspective, through semi-structured interview conducted in their home institutions. A key feature of the research was that, in the interest of minimising the potential for superficial or pre-conceived conclusions to be drawn, interviews with participants from two respondent institutions were positioned outside the researcher's direct ‘preferred partner' network. This insider-outsider perspective reduced potential bias through over-familiarity with solely networked institutional respondents when analysing the development, configuration and management of international academic alliances and alliance portfolios (APs).The study identifies three key findings on the basis of the analysis of institutional alliance activity. Firstly, that HEIs, operating within an appropriate regulatory environment can utilise both exploitation and exploration alliance strategies simultaneously to extend their resource base. The two strategies can be mutually reinforcing, and are not contradictory in tertiary education. Secondly, the analysis indicates that the extent to which resource extension may be achieved is reflected in the alliance strategy employed as HEIs internationalise. The movement from exploitation to exploration alliance strategy signifies a fundamental change in strategic intent and direction of the Business School, so new internationalisation strategy definitions are proposed for tertiary education. Thirdly, alliance management capability has the potential to develop, within complex partnership scenarios, as an institutional core competence, providing the potential for sustainable competitive advantage. On the basis of this analysis tools are developed which can assist in the strategic decision-making process for further evolution of alliance networks within institutional internationalisation strategies. The resultant application of these strategic tools allows for Business Schools to determine the characteristics of appropriate alliance partners to fill the gaps identified within their alliance network or portfolio.

Abstract:
Globalization is the promise of the future, and it presents, quite literally, a world of opportunities not available in the past. International collaborations in science, research, and business now enjoy increased probabilities of success, in part, because of the advance in technology and the possibility of instantaneous communications. The convenience, simplicity and affordability of technology are helping to make the world accessible to almost everyone. With new availability of international concerns and the growth of global partnerships in all areas of interest, an increased need arises for agreements that memorialize collaborators' commitments, responsibilities and obligations. There is a corresponding concern that the agreements be enforceable across national and international lines should anything go wrong. There is no collaboration, partnership or venture that will not be touched in some way by the law. Whose law governs and how rules and regulations of different nations will be applied are of escalating concern. Empirically examining the state of international contract law is the overarching focus of my research. Adopting a research methodology involving both quantitative and qualitative techniques, I am investigating whether any consistency exists between attorneys of different practice sectors (academic, government, corporate and private) considering choice of law, enforcement of contract provisions, and the inclusion of preventative measures of international contracts. My results contribute to the future success of international collaborations of all concerns by empirically identifying the need for increased education on various dispute resolution options, as well as the effect cultural awareness has on the drafting of international contracts.

Abstract:
The objective of this research is to find how world stock markets correlate with each other and what causes that correlation. Multiple dependent variables that may have a high impact on correlations are tested, with a particular focus on cross-equity holdings. All the variables but one tested significant at the accepted 90% confidence level. The model showed a negative relationship between equity holdings and stock market correlation. The results may inspire further research with more in depth analysis of international equity holdings and investor behavior in world stock markets.

Abstract:
Background: In June 2010, Swedish parliament decided that Swedish academia should compete with quality and introduce tuition fees for foreign students. This means that higher education will remain free of charge for citizens of EU/EEA and that third-country students will have to pay a tuition fee for studying in Sweden. Problem discussion: Managing the introduction of tuition fees is a matter of priorities among the various Swedish universities. Depending on the size and budget of the university, the concentration of the change has varied. Linnaeus University is at the moment concentrating on recruiting national students and building their brand within the Swedish boarders, ignoring the consequences that the lack of international students will lead to. We question how the university should be able to maintain an international experience for the student, teachers and researchers unless they choose to invest in international relations and internal marketing to sell their brand. Research question: What could Swedish academia do to communicate their quality of education and their brand on an international market in order to attract international students? Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to describe and analyze how Linnaeus University, and other institutions in similar situations, can promote their brand on an international market in order to successfully maintain and communicate the core values of their brand. We also wish to inspire similar organizations to be active and work with the situation rather than approaching change with a wait and see strategy. Methodology: We have chosen to make a qualitative research with The Actors perspective. We quickly discovered that this is the ultimate method for us since we are not trying to find any absolute truth, but rather gain knowledge and understanding of how different institutions handle the same situation. To create this understanding, our primary data has been collected through discussions with representatives from various universities and governmental organizations within Sweden. Findings: Our findings are based on several factors in relation to the emerging situation out of the introduction of tuition fees. We identified two major issues regarding inactive leadership and absent decisions. We believe that this is based on the paradigm shift in global Academia, from the classical institution to an organization within a competitive market - with students as their customers. We also found a lack of experience within Swedish Academia when it comes to communication internationally in an effective and efficient manner. Both issues show the urgent necessity for Academia to learn how to communicate their brand internationally in order to successfully attract international students. This initial investigation into the special program for English as a Second Language (ESL) students, the International Newcomer Academy (INA), examines and describes the nature of this new school in comparison with the nature of the Language Centers functioning in host schools as schools within schools. This study was prompted by the need to document perceptions, behaviors, and practices of all principal players, which might result in program improvement to benefit students. The primary goal for establishing this new school was to focus primarily on beginner limited English proficient (LEP) students so that the language centers would be relieved, and so do a better job of teaching intermediate and advanced LEP students.

Abstract:
This study investigates whether host country institutional factors and firm-specific factors may contribute to explain Brazilian multinational choices with regards to foreign direct investment entry and establishment modes. The research is based on articles that have pointed out the influence of host country institutions on foreign multinationals decision-making, considering that multinationals are exposed to government's transparency policy, rule of law and protection of contractual rights, among other factors. The study helps to improve understanding of emerging multinationals phenomenon and its particular dimensions, and to assess the extension of institutional theory as foundation for international business research. The proposed conceptual model is also based on Dunning’s Eclectic Paradigm, particularly firm ownership advantages and host country location advantages (social and economic development level). The study involved investment deals in multiple host countries carried out by different types of companies that constituted a sample composed by 106 parent companies and 171 subsidiaries. Logistic regression was applied in hypothesis testing. After designing the questionnaire, a survey was developed to obtain executives’ opinions, feelings and perceptions. The use of primary data for measuring institutional factors influence took into account the importance of real-life investigation to realize how institutional distance might influence entry mode and establishment mode choices. Research findings indicate that regulatory, normative and cognitive pillars of the institutional framework have significant explanatory power and may be added to theoretical models of foreign direct investment. Research findings also indicate distinctions between entry mode and establishment mode choices, once factors affecting each decision are different. Finally, the study showed that institutional factors influence on internationalization process of Brazilian multinationals should be regarded with slightly more caution, since Brazilian companies have been able to adapt to the institutional voids existing in the Brazilian market, and therefore tend to give little attention to factors such as government interference, bureaucracy and political risk, differently from developed countries multinationals.

Abstract:
As in any other sector, the Covid-19 outbreak has caused many changes in education, and there is a reasonable expectation for this intervention to have a significant impact on the students and their performance. The purpose of this study was to analyse the effects of the digital semester, imposed on students due to Covid-19 outbreak, on student academic success. Using a quasi-experimental methodological approach called dif-in-dif analysis, three empirical models were constructed to analyse if there is an overall effect when comparing our control and treatment groups, as well as if there were any group-specific differences when it comes to the performance across genders and educational levels. The study found a significant negative effect of the digital semester on student academic success, suggesting that students performed significantly worse after the Covid-19 outbreak caused the University to step away from face-to-face teaching and adapt to remote studies. Furthermore, it was found that gender-specific differences do not affect the academic performance of our treatment group; however, female students performed worse when the digital semester was implemented compared to the control group who had both the classes and exams face-to-face. Lastly, Master students were found to perform significantly worse compared to Bachelor students’ when the Covid-19 outbreak caused the education to transfer to the digital environment.

Abstract:
As technology continues to change the way society communicates, teachers need to prepare their students for digital literacy and competencies in their adulthood. Specific training is necessary for educators in the appropriate and effective methods for incorporating technologies such as smart phones and hand-held devices. Teachers, who work in international boarding schools, are more effective in their use of technology when they understand the classroom cultural differences and are able to clarify any misconceptions. To determine what experienced teachers find missing in their instruction and what should be included in a teachers' instructional guide, a guide was developed based upon the existing literature; the guide was tested and revised under three conditions. In the first phase, a panel of subject-matter experts reviewed the guide draft to identify the instructional goals and validate the survey instrument. In the second phase, a teacher's workshop was conducted and provided in-depth discussions on how they use technology in the classroom. Teachers shared examples of how culture affected students' use and misuse of technology. In the final phase, observations were conducted as teachers used the lessons and resources in their instruction. The final revision, presented in this document, includes closing comments made by participating teachers. The goal was to develop a digital citizenship guide for teachers in international boarding schools that reflected best practices from the literature and the input from experts and teachers. The results identified the specific skills and competencies that are required to teach students how to communicate in the digital world and become good digital citizens. The culturally diverse student population at the investigation site made it possible to generalize instructional sets that will be of value to teachers everywhere. The guide, developed through the dissertation initiative, provides educators with the knowledge, tools, and examples necessary to teach students how these technologies can be used in a multicultural learning environment. It can be used to address the fundamentals of digital citizenship and provide insight into the role culture plays in the use of technology in education.

Abstract:
Talhado Fishing Enterprises (Pty) Ltd is a squid fishing company founded in 1988, with sea and land based freezing facilities. Operating from the East coast situated in the Port Elizabeth harbour, the company processes and packages its caught and bought out product for sales to its export customers situated in Spain and Italy. The company is privately owned, 38.8 percent owned by previously disadvantaged persons. This study examines the whether it would be feasible to expand its operations into the USA, namely into the California area where a squid fishery exists. The study further centres around the company’s existing markets, namely Spain and Italy, to establish whether demand exists to purchase this Californian squid specie. The reason for the study is that due to legislative and political issues growth in the squid industry in South Africa is limited. It is therefore considered pertinent to source further supply of product in order to expand its business. The aim of the study is establish whether it is feasible to expand the company’s operations internationally and does the outcome of this initial study warrant the development of an in depth business plan. In order to achieve these objectives the following approach was followed: A comprehensive literature study was conducted with regard to the industry internationally and locally; Interviews was conducted with independent experts such as attorneys and industry role players situated in California; Potential sellers of businesses were sourced in the California and interviews were arranged with these role players; The response to the interviews was measured against the literature study conducted and financial statements supplied.

Abstract:
This dissertation is presented in the form of three essays on International Business studies. The purpose of the dissertation is to address the interdependence between the macroeconomy and finance at three levels of analysis: the conceptual level, the economic policy level, and the corporate policy level. Each essay addresses one of these levels. The empirical focus is on developing countries in general---and Latin America in particular---because in recent history these countries have experienced large economic fluctuations and major regime shifts. The introduction surveys the literature on the relationship between the financial sector and economic growth. The first essay synthesizes the literature concerning the benefits, risks, and costs of financial liberalization in developing countries and presents illustrative data on its recent implementation and outcomes. The second essay investigates the causal relationships between real activity, inflation, and financial assets' returns in seven major Latin American economies (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, and Venezuela) over the period 1976--1999, using vector autoregression analysis to explore the puzzling negative relationship observed elsewhere between real stock returns and inflation. The third essay investigates whether macroeconomic factors are as important as traditional firm-specific and country-specific factors as determinants of capital structure for a sample of firms from the seven Latin American countries mentioned above in the period 1986--2000 using panel data analysis. Empirical comparisons are drawn with industrial economies: the G-7 economies in the second essay and a subset of United States firms in the third. The final chapter presents the conclusions of this dissertation. The main finding is that differences between advanced and emerging economies in the relationship among economic variables do not seem as clear-cut as often assumed by academicians, policy

Abstract:
Establishing new, international business relationships is a highly relevant and critical issue for many firms that want to go abroad, as international business relationships are a rapidly growing attested by the increased importance of conducting business across national borders. However, the risk for failing in initiating new, international business relationships is significant; giving the rise for a need to increase the knowledge about such processes and those circumstances that may affect it along the way. Despite the addressed need, the literature on the area of international business relationship initiation processes has been recognized as scarce. Thus the purpose of this study is therefore to enrich the research area with an increased understanding of the phenomenon of international business relationship initiation processes. The purpose is achieved by combining empirical findings with theories from the disciplines of internationalization, business relationships, and networking. Relationships are bridges to new markets, and thus initiations of international business relationships may be regarded as the internationalization process of a firm. Third actors are a part of the dyad?s network, and by merging its networking effect on the dyad, new theory is new theory is developed concerning initiations of international business relationships and third actors? influence on these. The empirical findings are deducted from a case study of the relationship initiation process between the software supplier Powel and the engineer consultancy firm Norconsult Andina in Chile. Through the case study, the study will i) provide a description of the characteristics of the international business relationship initiation process, ii) explain how third actors may influence this process, and iii) identify how the difference in the third actors? nationality influence the relationship initiation process. The choice of using a case study design reflects upon the complexity of business relationships, whose initiation is extensively subjected to dynamism. Drawing on the strengths of such a research design, the study employs multiple source of evidence by collecting data from participating-observations, direct observations, semi-structured interviews, and documentation. Based on the findings of the study, it is suggested that those factors regarded as influential for the process can be divided into internal, relational, and external factors, respectively extracted from the firm, the relational, and the environmental level of the business relationship to be initiated. Third actors are suggested to belong to the relational factor category, and can take the forms as persons, organizations, artifacts and piece of work, solely or multiple. Together with the internal and external factors, they have a relative influence on the relationship initiation process, upon which sum decides the outcome; whether the process decreases or increases its closeness to a business agreement, linger for a period of time, or even stop. The study suggests that the relationship initiation process is even more dynamic than previously found in the literature, which is further emphasized by seeing the process from the perspective of both parts of the dyad: The process patterns may differ, however, they do converge as the closeness to the business agreement decreases, which is reached simultaneously in time.Further, vertically linked third actors are found to be particularly influential for the process, especially if they are linked to both of the companies of the dyad. Concerning their international dimension, they can be seen in terms of not only their nationality, but also their international experience and country of presence. Indeed, the two latter dimensions appear to be most important in terms of reaching the business agreement, implying that managers should focus their efforts on those customer companies that are common for the two firms, have international experience, and have local presence in the country where the future business is supposed to take place.Based upon the findings of the study, the thesis contributes to the theory by suggesting a new conceptual model on international business relationship initiation processes. However, as this thesis is merely based on a single case study, the new model should be tested in future studies by the use of a higher number of cases across industries and national borders.

Casey, Treena Louise. "Considerations for Personalized Professional Learning at International Academy of South East Asia| A Gap Analysis." Thesis, University of Southern California, 2018. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10930140.

Full text
Abstract:

International Academy of South East Asia (IASEA) is a preschool - grade 12 independent, non- profit international school with the vision of being a world leader in education cultivating exceptional thinkers prepared for the future. The school has determined that personalized learning is a pathway to the achievement of the vision. A personalized approach results in more growth for each student, nurturing and challenging in order to maximize potential. Given that teacher actions are the most significant factor in student achievement, it is critical to examine professional learning for faculty with the same rationale. The purpose of this study was to conduct a gap analysis using the Clark And Estes (2008) model to examine the knowledge, motivation and organizational (KMO) influences that impact IASEA's ability to effectively implement personalized professional learning. An outcome of this study is a plan for how IASEA may best implement personalized learning for its faculty. The study explored barriers to achieving the goal of implementation and then proposed solutions. The methodological framework used was that of a qualitative case study with descriptive statistics. Data collection to inform the gaps was in the form of documentation analysis, focus group and individual interviews, and surveys. The study population consisted of representative faculty and administrators and the subsequent data analysis sought to validate assumed influences as knowledge, motivation and organization barriers and inform possible solutions. Proposed solutions for these barriers included strategic targeted deployment of instructional coaches, tools for the existing Professional Learning Community (PLC) teams to utilize to measure effectiveness, and the implementation of a schoolwide system of micro-credentials designed to support personalized professional learning.

Roth, Augusta D. "Leadership Strategies for Retaining Mariners Aboard State Maritime Academy Training Ships." ScholarWorks, 2018. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/6274.

Full text
Abstract:
The shortage of qualified merchant marines in the United States requires State Maritime Academy (SMA) leaders to develop competitive retention strategies to retain merchant mariners aboard training vessels. The purpose of this single case study was to identify retention strategies that U.S. SMA leaders used to retain mariners aboard training ships. The conceptual framework of this study was Vroom's expectancy theory. The study participants consisted of 5 SMA leaders overseeing the mariners aboard a training vessel. Semistructured interviews and review of SMA documents pertaining to employment strategies provided the study data. The data analysis included collecting and coding data, and using the constant comparative method to identify the themes. Four themes related to successful retention strategies emerged from the data analysis: (a) the monetary value of employment and benefits must be comparable to what is available in the maritime industry, (b) professional development is necessary to maintain maritime industry credentials and improve employee performance within the organization, (c) recognition and understanding of the uniqueness of being a mariner as a profession is important to mariners, and (d) transparency and trust increase communication and improve retention. The findings of this study contribute to positive social change by providing best practices for SMA leaders to integrate retention strategies to improve employment satisfaction, enhance the training of mariners on U.S. waterways, and increase longevity of qualified mariners, which could create a healthy and positive work environment.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation comprises three essays, each of which studies a business phenomenon in the context of vertical supply chains. The first essay studies the equity stakes that downstream producers hold in their upstream input suppliers. It applies and extends a property-rights model to make predictions concerning the size of such equity stakes and tests three main hypotheses using firm-level data from the Japanese auto parts industry. The second essay studies the impact of multinational retailers on China's exports. As the multinational retailers enter China, they may increase Chinese exports through linkages with distant markets where they have operations. Meanwhile, the presence of multinational retailers may stimulate productivity growth among local Chinese suppliers. Chinese city-level exports data are utilized to test and distinguish these two mechanisms. The third essay synthesizes, extends and illustrates the theory of exclusionary contracts. Two new channels though which exclusionary contracts in vertical supply chains could be anti-competitive are proposed. A recent antitrust case illustrates all incentives---the two established channels and the two new ones.

Abstract:

Background: The increasing global business competitiveness thoroughly intensifies the demand for improvements of communication and negotiation skills in order to adjust competence to successfully conduct the work of getting treaties of cooperation and business development to work everywhere. It is simply a matter of survival for an increasing amount of multinational companies operating in all kinds of different locations and businesses around the world. This state of nature also holds for Swedish and Spanish companies, that both heavily depend on foreign trade, and whose negotiating behavior is going to be the focus of this study. For every international company facing the challenges of developing new business in foreign cultures it should be of interest to find out what would improve their business interactions. The study is therefore investigating possible ways of how to deal with cultural implications that might appear in international business negotiations.

Purpose: To study and analyze the presence of cultural impact on international business negotiations, with a special emphasis on Swedish-Spanish business negotiators.

Method: Considering negotiations as a process-oriented phenomenon observed from empirical studies of individual cases and drawing conclusions thereof, the study takes a hermeneutic qualitative-inductive interaction approach. The frame of references are constitued by a thorough spectra of well established theories developed within the fields of communication, negotiation and intercultural studies.

Result: The study proves that the behavior of negotiators are influencing the outcome of the negotiation, particularly in international contexts where the parties have different experiences, historical and cultural backgrounds as well as different perspectives on life.

Abstract:

Introduction: Already in the 1970’s, internationalisation was noted as a striking trend in business. Since then, the speed of internationalisation has increased as infrastructure, communication, and IT have decreased space and time barriers for international trade. Today, companies must engage in international activities to survive in the competitive environment and researchers argue that firms’ international performance is determined by their ability to establish relationships.

Problem: In order to facilitate the search for business actors globally, Chamber Trade Business to Business AB offers a database in which companies can post business inquiries. Lately, the number of inquiries published in the database has decreased. Therefore, the question arose what other tools companies use instead when searching for business partners. This empirically driven problem is also matched by a theoretical need for more research about how firms establish international relationships.

Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to analyse how small Swedish B2B companies find downstream international partners.

Theoretical framework: In order to create a frame of reference for guidance in the collection and analysis of the empirical data, theory has been divided into three sections; Internationalisation theory, Business to Business relationships theory, and Means for international interaction.

Method: To fulfil the purpose of the thesis, a qualitative study with an inductive approach was undertaken. Secondary data in terms of literature and academic articles were scanned to create a theoretical framework and to facilitate the collection of primary data. Primary data was gathered from ten small Swedish firms in order to find out how their downstream international business relationships had been initiated.

Conclusion: Our thesis concludes that many Swedish sellers start out their internationalisation to countries with close distance by responding to unsolicited orders from foreign customers. Over time, their proactiveness increases and they primary use the following channels in order to find international partners: networks, trade fairs, trade- and industry organisations, and the Internet. Databases have several defaults for being a useful search tool, mainly their lack of precise search criteria and personal interaction. Further, when companies offer a high quality product, a reputation is created about the company. Consequently, foreign customers pull the company into new countries and the need for external search tools is low.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: A virtual monopoly has existed in the mohair processing industry for decades. As a result of 25 years of regulated marketing, producers lack marketing experience. This “monopolistic” situation has led to stagnation in production and eventually to alarming decreases world-wide. The aim of this research report is to provide a business plan for a company (Fibre Traders International (Pty) Ltd) that can capitalise on the opportunities in the market for mohair products in order to secure the funding needed to take advantage of these opportunities in a manner which would eventually also empower suppliers and clients.

Abstract:
This article considers the evolution of international business cycle interdependencies among 27 developed and developing countries since the beginning of 1870s, utilising the generalized vector autoregressive (VAR)-based spillover index of Diebold and Yilmaz (2012), which allows the construction of a time-varying measure of business cycle spillovers. We find that, on average, 65% of the forecast error variance of the 27 countries' business cycle shocks is due to international spillovers. However, the magnitude of international business cycle spillovers varies considerably over time. There is a clear increasing trend since the end of World War II and until the middle 1980s. After that, international business cycle interdependencies declined during the period that was dubbed the Great Moderation, and stabilized around the beginning of the twenty-first century. During the Great Recession of 2008-2009, international business cycle spillovers increased to unprecedented levels. Finally, developed countries are consistently ranked as net transmitters of cyclical shocks to developing counties throughout the sample. (authors' abstract)

Abstract:
This study discusses challenges and possibilities with newly established firms related to international business opportunity development, and examines the role of branding in the process. The aim of the research is to analyse how international business opportunities and branding are intertwined in new and small firms’ activities. The study starts with a literature review where the phenomenon is approached by reviewing focal theories related to international business opportunity development and branding. The study continues with an empirical research by examining the international business opportunity development and branding of two Oulu-based newly founded firms operating in the high technology industry. The empirical research is carried out by theme-based interviews. The study revealed that international business opportunities can be supported by branding activities starting from the very early phase of founding a new firm. The different functions and actors of the international business opportunities are distinguished to analyse the connections to the branding activities and actors impacting branding process, and to analyse how branding efforts can support the international business opportunity development. Hence, the international business opportunity development within a new firm was depicted as a process incorporating the main activities of learning, networking, internationalising, innovating and creating customer value. The business opportunity is co-created together with the specialised capabilities of the main actors: entrepreneur(s), organisation, social networks and stakeholders. Branding being a continuous process to co-create value, building the brand identity and image promoting the awareness, reliability and recognition of the new firm can support also the development of the international business opportunity and nurture the network relationships management. The results show insights into how the development of the international business opportunity can utilise brand building endeavours to overcome the major challenges that occurred due to specific context of a newly established firm. The study advances the contemporary knowledge by pointing towards the supportive role of branding in establishing new customer and partner relationships to develop the international business opportunity. The purpose of this research was to gain a more profound understanding of the development of the international business opportunities, and to enhance the development of international entrepreneurship theory in order to explore the relations of the phenomenon. The scope of this study is not the emergence of the business opportunities as such, but the continuous interactive process of discovering, creating, evaluating and exploiting, thus, the development of opportunities in order to be able to collect the fruits of the specific international business opportunity. Branding has often regarded as a business functions for the bigger companies requiring heavy investments and big organization behind, which small firms with limited resources generally lack. This research is to understand the role of branding in new and small firms established for developing the international business opportunity. The present study encourages entrepreneurs to systematically think of the potential advantages of branding for the development of their international business opportunity and for tackling the challenges faced by a new and small firm.

Abstract:
The thesis focuses on the role of leadership communication within a multinational business organization. It aims to confirm the critical importance of communication provided by leaders to their team members. The literature review will focus on the existing communication flows within organizations and the current research results and insights in the field of leadership communication, which is a new, emerging domain of study. Thanks to recent quantitative research (Men, 2014b), it has been already confirmed that leadership communication has a direct effect on employee-organization relationships and overall internal communication. However, qualitative research has been suggested for validation of how the discovered model works in concrete environments (Men, 2014b). Thus, the research section will reveal the findings of in-depth semi-structured interview analysis within a global internal IT services provider which is part of a Group enterprise operating in the logistics industry world-wide. The thesis will culminate in defining logical reasoning for adding communication skills to the company's core competencies for organizational managers and leaders.

Abstract:
Business Administration/International Business Administration
Ph.D.
This dissertation studies international acquisitions mainly in terms of their impact on firm competitiveness and CEO compensation. International acquisitions have been used extensively by multinational companies for internationalization purposes. They are the main drivers of foreign direct investment flow around the world. The large number of international acquisitions and the amount of money used for them make these acquisitions important corporate strategies to examine. This study explores from different perspectives the implications of international acquisitions for firms. In the first chapter, we assess the impact of international acquisitions on the competitiveness of companies. Competitiveness has been studied mostly at the country and industry levels; firm-level competitiveness has been understudied, and the impact the organizational choices of companies have on competitiveness have not been fully explored. This study attempts to fill this gap by examining the impact of international acquisitions on firm competitiveness. Building on the resource-based view, internalization theory, agency theory and managerial hubris we propose that international acquisitions enhance competitiveness. We also develop a competing hypothesis about the negative impact of IAs on competitiveness using agency view, integration issues, and information asymmetry perspective. We test our model with a sample of acquisitions between 1985 and 2007. We find that international acquisitions have a positive effect on firm competitiveness. We also find variations in the impact of international acquisitions across different dimensions of competitiveness and benchmarks. We also investigate factors that affect the success of international acquisitions. Our evidence suggests that the acquirer's resources and capabilities play a crucial role in the success of international acquisitions. In the second chapter, we explore the association between acquisitions and CEO compensation from two different perspectives. Agency theory, which assumes a conflict between shareholders' and executives' interests, predicts a positive impact of acquisitions on CEO compensation. In contrast, subscribers of stewardship theory question the assumption of a conflict of interest and propose that acquisitions have no impact on CEO compensation. We test the prediction of agency view with a sample of U.S. acquisitions for the period 1995 to 2007. Our results provide evidence for the agency view. Unlike prior studies, this study distinguishes between international and domestic acquisitions, and assesses their impact. We find that international acquisitions have less of a positive effect on CEO compensation than domestic acquisitions. Finally, we investigate some deal characteristics and show that the relatedness of the acquirer and the target influences post-acquisition CEO compensation. We provide an in-depth literature review of acquisition research in the third chapter. In addition to discussing the antecedents, outcomes, and success/failure factors of acquisitions in general, we focus on international acquisitions as well. We discuss the differences between international and domestic acquisitions and review the literature of international acquisitions as a mode of entry. More important, we identify theoretical and methodological gaps, unanswered questions, trends, and understudied areas in acquisition research. Building on these, we provide recommendations and directions for future acquisition research. Overall, this study examines the implications of international acquisitions for firms. Our findings indicate that international acquisition is an important phenomenon that influences the competitiveness of firms and governance through effects on CEO compensation. One of the major contributions of this study is to show that international acquisitions have different characteristics than domestic acquisitions. Our study also identifies issues that need to be resolved in acquisition research and propose ways to address those issues. Our study adds fresh insights to the literature on M&As, competitiveness, and CEO compensation.

Abstract:
It is current phenomena that business environment has changed and has set new requirements for companies. Companies must adapt to the changes comes from outside its normal business environment and take into consideration wider business environment where it operates. These changes also have set new demands for company business model. Companies Business models need to be changed to match state of art business environment and requirements. Business models can be competitive advantage to the companies. This study report will demonstrate how company could take environmental aspect into account while transforming its business model into new one. Research is aiming to new theory-building. Through the literature reviews of two main topics, Business Ecosystems and Business models, and through reflecting theory into case company presentation, this study report gives answer to research question, “Through what kind of process mature company can transform business model in the context of business ecosystem?” Business ecosystem will present the business environment where business models come into reality. Another assumption is that transformation can be done through well-designed process. Research provides transformation process which can be used as a baseline if company is planning to transform its current business model into new one. It can help company managers and strategist to plan, implement and transform business model. Research gives good contribution to the research field as it is not widely research topic. It also gives good suggestion for future research topics.

Abstract:
It is an emerging phenomenon that the leading multinational companies are studying how to use the engagement experiences of customers and communities as the foundation of value co-creation. To achieve this, the business leaders have increasingly adopted an ecological organizational form, namely business ecosystem. Google, Amazon and Microsoft are the real world examples and pioneers in this field. However, in the academic research, it is addressed by a number of researchers that there is significant lack of empirical studies that examines the emergence and formation of business ecosystem, especially in ICT industry. In essence, this study takes Cloud as the context to develop concepts on the emergence of business ecosystem and examine the manifestation of such evolution in the emerging business field. Through extensive literature reviews and empirical interviews, the current study developed answers to the research question, “How do new business ecosystems emerge, in the context of Cloud computing?” at qualitative level. In general, it is considered in the study that business ecosystem is a type of more advanced business form emerged recently. It has the characteristics as follow: provision of value, integration with external partners, requiring multiple participants, shifting from individual to collaborative thinking, interdependence of the participants, value co-creation, co-petition, open innovation and shared fate of success or failure. From a macro level viewpoint, the emergence of business ecosystem is the result of the continuous evolution of business forms, from linear type towards a more complex networked type. At a micro level, for an ecosystem to emerge in a given industry, it involves strategic design and appropriate execution. Furthermore, a set of critical elements need to be in the right place for a business ecosystem to emerge, which including: prerequisite conditions for ecosystem to emerge, external environmental and resource, shared vision, leadership of the ecosystem, common platform, mechanisms of the ecosystem, ecosystem healthiness, and IT infrastructure. The study further suggests that the emergence of business ecosystem as a new business form is not out of luck or probability. It is a natural path that under governance of the evolution forces existing in the social-economic contexts, just as the evolution of all the living creatures in the natural environment. For this broader perspective, the emergence of ecosystem is inevitable due to the social-economic and technological driving forces.

Exporting is one of the most commonly used modes of international business operations and significant option to all sizes of companies considering foreign market penetration. As many cross-national policy makers encourages countries to open their trade barriers for free product trade, the global environment has gradually shifted in favor of using exporting as a foreign business operation mode. This research focuses on product exportation and distinguishes it from service exports whereas differences may occur. The research contains a pre-assumption that the process of product exportation in business-to-business markets can be managed with universally best practices and the process for efficient exporting management can be found and described.

Abstract:
Business leaders require the appropriate strategies and knowledge to successfully grow their companies through international expansion. Multinational enterprises (MNEs) in the West Bank in Palestine often encounter complex barriers as the executives of the firms explore business opportunities in foreign countries. The objective of this single case study was to explore, in depth, the perspectives of business leaders from a population of executives of an MNE in the West Bank. The conceptual framework used in the study was cultural intelligence. The selected multinational business leaders participated in semistructured, face-to-face interviews followed by member checking. The 2 executives of the MNE shared their experiences and knowledge concerning the internationalization processes of their company. The data analysis process followed Yin's 5-phase analysis cycle; it entailed an analysis of interview responses followed by member checking and a review of administrative documents of the MNE under study. Three themes emerged from the data analysis: international knowledge and adaption of local conditions, strategic partnerships, and diversification and specialization. The findings from the study could contribute to positive social change by encouraging executives to explore business opportunities in the West Bank, resulting in an increase in employment rate and better living standards for the residents.
