AbstractUnstable field-aligned currents are seen as the origin of field-aligned potential drops. They convert energy stored in magnetic shear stresses into kinetic energy. A good fraction of this energy is carried by runaway electrons and ions out of the acceleration region. The paper emphasizes the analogy with mechanical fractures. Simple expressions for the energy conversion rate and the parallel potential drop are derived, the two being linked by the critical current density needed for instability. The origin of the currents (generator) lies mostly in a region remote from that of energy co

Concussions represent an increasing economic burden to society. Motor vehicle collisions (MVCs) are of the leading causes for sustaining a concussion, potentially due to high head accelerations. The change in velocity (i.e., delta-V) of a vehicle in a MVC is an established metric for impact severity. Accordingly, the purpose of this paper is to analyze findings from previous research to determine the relation between delta-V and linear head acceleration, including occupant parameters. Plasma wakefield accelerators can be driven either by intense laser pulses (LWFA) or by intense particle beams (PWFA). A third approach that combines the complementary advantages of both types of plasma wakefield accelerator has been established with increasing success over the last decade and is called hybrid LWFA→PWFA. Essentially, a compact LWFA is exploited to produce an energetic, high-current electron beam as a driver for a subsequent PWFA stage, which, in turn, is exploited for phase-constant, inherently laser-synchronized, quasi-static acceleration over extended acceleration lengths. Abstract. Recent spectroscopic observations of Jupiter's "main oval" auroras indicate that the primary auroral electron beam is routinely accelerated to energies of ~100 keV, and sometimes to several hundred keV, thus approaching the relativistic regime. This suggests the need to re-examine the classic non-relativistic theory of auroral electron acceleration by field-aligned electric fields first derived by Knight (1973), and to extend it to cover relativistic situations. In this paper we examine this problem for the case in which the source population is an isotropic Maxwellian, as also assum

However, we have to convert the transverse wave into a longitudinal one which can trap the charged particles in the wave trough to accelerate them. One of them is a beat wave accelerator (BWA) which uses a nonlinear optical mixing of two laser beams. At any given event gravity accelerates all particles equally—yet gravity is very strong in some places and very weak in others. In this chapter, we learn a powerful thinking tool to help us deal with these variations: the gravitational potential. The potential takes the concept of “acceleration times height” that, we previously found, determines the march of time and generalizes it to cases where the gravitational acceleration varies with position. The potential encodes global relationships, such as the gravitational redshift of light emitted from one point and received by a distant observer,

AbstractThis chapter describes recent advances in the use of machine learning techniques in reactive atomistic simulations. In particular, it provides an overview of techniques used in training force fields with closed form potentials, developing machine-learning-based potentials, use of machine learning in accelerating the simulation process, and analytics techniques for drawing insights from simulation results. The chapter covers basic machine learning techniques, training procedures and loss functions, issues of off-line and in-lined training, and associated numerical and algorithmic issues. The chapter highlights key outstanding challenges, promising approaches, and potential future developments. While the chapter relies on reactive atomistic simulations to motivate models and methods, these are more generally applicable to other modeling paradigms for reactive flows.
