Previous research on leaf lettuce has shown that altering the N:S ratio has an effect on plant color and N and S content. It appears that nitrogen rates can be decreased if known rates of sulfur are applied. Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) is a technique for sampling from a target probability distribution, and has risen in importance as faster computing hardware has made possible the exploration of hitherto difficult distributions. Unfortunately, this powerful technique is often misapplied by poor selection of transition kernel for the Markov chain that is generated by the simulation. Some kernels are used without being checked against the convergence requirements for MCMC (total balance and ergodicity), but in this work we prove the existence of a simple proxy for total balance that is not as dem

Abstract Evaluation of a plural component pipe coating mixed on and off ratio and subjected to hot water soak and cathodic disbondment testing per CSA Z245.30-18. This work attempts to demonstrate that a 10% margin for error in mix ratio is an acceptable tolerance for anticipating good performance. A widely specified plural component pipe coating with a mix ratio requirement of 3 parts epoxy base (Part A) to 1 part amine curing agent hardener (Part B) was tested at mix ratios just above and below the 10% acceptable error margin. Abstract Successful coating and lining application on concrete substrates are contingent, in part, on the basic design and installation of the concrete itself. Protective coatings and linings are effected by the amount and movement of water in the concrete, the compressive and tensile strength of the concrete and the concrete’s ability to resist cracking from internal and external forces. Through attention to sub-grade conditions, water cement ratios, aggregate grading and content, and finish and cure techniques, probability of successful coating and lining application can be greatly increased

The majority of natural gas compressors operate on gas mixtures with molecular weights (MW) less than air. For these machines, performance acceptance tests are run on air at reduced speed. For multistage compressors, each stage is tested individually. The test speeds and inlet temperatures are selected to closely match the inlet to exit density ratios and the machine Mach numbers per the ASME PTC10 test code. The specified test inlet pressure (limited by the test variable speed motor power capacity) is always high enough to assure that the test Reynolds number is above the required PTC10 minim

Based on the failure probability, the flaw acceptance standard of ASME Code Sec. XI is examined with some concerns weather the failure probability is uniform for flaws with various aspect ratios and failure frequencies are small enough. In this paper, the results of preliminary case studies are described on the failure probability of reactor pressure vessels (RPVs) with a surface flaw specified in Sec. XI. PFM code PASCAL was used for case studies. A PTS (Pressurized Thermal Shock) transient prescribed by NRC/EPRI PTS Benchmark Study was used as an applied load. Analysis results showed that th

The optimal design of offshore structures is formulated as a decision theoretical problem. The objective is to maximize the net present value of the service life benefit. The general optimization problem is simplified by taking into account the cost impacts of only one possible reconstruction of the structure. The analytical solution to this problem has been derived for the case, where failure events follow a stationary Poisson process. The service life benefit is formulated in terms of the production profile, the design and construction costs, the costs of failure and the costs of reconstruct

Experimental work was conducted on two girth welds in large diameter steel pipes. By a proper selection of welding consumables, yield strength mismatch was obtained from 5 to 12% undermatching and 45% overmatching. The girth welds were non-destructively tested using the time of flight diffraction technique by three NDE companies. The verification of the detection and sizing capabilities of TOFD inspection techniques has shown that the performance levels varied widely. This finding confirms the need to validate the NDE techniques. Tensile specimens, Charpy and CTOD specimens, and curved wide pl

This report investigated pathways to reduce concrete curing time while maintaining mechanical and durability performance. Among several options such as admixtures, supplementary cementitious materials, and low water-to-cement ratio, researchers explored two mix designs in a field demonstration project. For Stage I of the project, a low water-to-cement ratio concrete mixture was used. For Stage II, the use of calcium-silicate-hydrate (C-S-H) based seeds was explored. Concrete laboratory mixtures containing C-S-H seeds X1 and X2 exhibited increased early-age strength and reduced permeability. Ba

Prior PRCI funded projects, identified the ability of a Continuous Engine Performance Monitor, (CEPM) to fulfill the likelihood of industry acceptance as a Performance Monitoring alternative to a Continuous Emission Monitoring System CEMS in future monitoring requirements for typical pipeline engines. This current project installed a CEPM monitoring system on a pipeline engine equipped with a CEMS and assessed the ability of this CEPM system to detect potential engine emission excursions. In summary, successful implementation of a CEPM system requires functioning knowledge of the test engine i

The tomato, a profitable vegetable crop in both the USA and Israel, has benefited significantly from intensive breeding efforts in both countries, and elsewhere (esp. Holland). : Modem hybrids are highly prolific and resistant to a variety of major pests. They produce attractive, firm fruit for both processing and fresh-marketing. In all cases, however, reduction in flavor and aroma have occurred concomitantly with the increase in yield. Sugars-acids ratio dominate fruit taste, whereas aroma volatiles (potent at minute ppb and ppt levels) contribute to the total characteristic tomato flavor. A

We document novel facts about US household preferences over inflation and monetary policy tradeoffs. Many households were attentive to news about monetary policy and to interest rates in 2023. The median household perceives the Federal Reserve's inflation objective to be 3 percent, but would prefer it to be lower. Quantifying the tradeoff between inflation and unemployment, we find an average acceptable sacrifice ratio of 0.6, implying that households are likely to find disinflation costly. Average preferences are well represented by a non-linear loss function with near equal weights on inflat

The development of improved inspection techniques to permit the detection of such small defects is a difficult undertaking. An Alternative approach toward increasing the reliability of ERW pipe is to insure that the weld region is able to tolerate the presence of any undetected defects without failure, that is, to insure that the weld has adequate ductility.
