Abstract:
Secondary structure and solvent accessibility prediction provide valuable information for estimating the three dimensional structure of a protein. As new feature extraction methods are developed the dimensionality of the input feature space increases steadily. Reducing the number of dimensions provides several advantages such as faster model training, faster prediction and noise elimination. In this work, several dimensionality reduction techniques have been employed including various feature selection methods, autoencoders and PCA for protein secondary structure and solvent accessibility prediction. The reduced feature set is used to train a support vector machine at the second stage of a hybrid classifier. Cross-validation experiments on two difficult benchmarks demonstrate that the dimension of the input space can be reduced substantially while maintaining the prediction accuracy. This will enable the incorporation of additional informative features derived for predicting the structural properties of proteins without reducing the accuracy due to overfitting.

Abstract:
When we talk about accessibility and person-environment fit we refer to the need for using built spaces, goods and services regardless of the physical condition, age or abilities of each person. Something that is increasingly important in today's global processes of urbanization and demographic aging. Accessibility has been frequently approached, from a political and human-rights dimension, as a strategy to remove barriers that discriminate against people with disabilities. But this approach has shown its limitations at the time of being implemented. Therefore, the main goal of this research is to help characterize the physical accessibility to the built environment as a broader term, based on the theories of person-environment fit, and empirically test its relevance in the decisions of households with elderly or disabled members The thesis has been divided into four parts that express different dimensions and offer a theoretical and practical connection to the question. First, different theoretical and practical approaches that conceptualize person-environment adaptation are reviewed. Second, a empirical research allows to statistically contrast for the existence of adaptive behavior by families with elderly and disabled members in their own dwellings as well as the conditions of these decisions. Binary response logit models has been built using data from two large statistical operations: the Survey of Disability, Independence and Dependency Situations, AGE 2008, held in Spain and panel Survey of Health, Aging and Retirement in Europe, SHARE, version 4, 2011. The results show that families indeed adopt strategies to improve accessibility in the home, that are consistent with the theory analysis. These behaviors are explained by factors of personal-functional nature and the characteristics of the environment, such as the theories in the fields of psychology and environmental gerontology by Kurt Lewin in the 1930s and Powell Lawton in the 1970s. Specifically, the results of the model show that factors such as age, income level, concern about suffering a fall or having certain difficulties to perform daily life activities, as well as the conditions and functioning outside the dwelling and in the neighborhood can explain the expenses done in adaptations (in AGE survey) or the fact of living in an accessibility improved housing (SHARE survey). Policy analysis and intervention mechanisms used primarily normative, is the main content of the other chapters. The third one, called POLICIES, deals with the analysis of accessibility in the great models of intervention on disability, starting from the global scale, to the strategies of "soft law" applied in the EU and the technical regulations in Spain. Finally, the chapter reviews the policy INSTRUMENTS applied in the design, construction and adaptation of built environments and particularly put focus on two instruments considered key to the development of person-environment fit in the future. Firstly, the so-called "Accessible Pedestrian Route" (IPA), to articulate technical accessibility and pedestrian mobility in urbanized public spaces, created by the OM 561/2010 Act of February 2nd in Spain. And, secondly, the "reasonable accommodation" mechanism, a legal concept created to provide flexibility to the resolution of conflicts of person-environment fit in the workplace and increasingly being applied in the decisions to accessibility improvements in built environments under reform or rehabilitation needs.

Abstract:
Background: Everyone has the right to get equal health-care but different reports show that people with disabilities do not have the same opportunity for equal treatment as others. Aim: To describe and analyze the preparedness of staff working in the private care sector to provide care on an equal footing at their healthcare center when it comes to meeting people with different disabilities. Furthermore, the purpose is to investigate what conditions are available at the health center to provide care for patients with disabilities on equal terms. Questions: What adjustments have been made in the premises, what tools are available to facilitate care and what improvements would have to be made to increase the possibility of providing care on equal terms? How does the staff have the task of providing care on equal terms in meeting patients with different disabilities? Method: The survey has been conducted in the form of semi structured interviews with descriptions in the form of vignettes. Result: Staff members generally possessed good general knowledge regarding different kinds of disabilities but there were no tools for alternative information and communication. Adequate time for the visit was important to the staff.

Abstract:
Women with acute coronary syndromes (ACS) differ from men in a lower clinical expressiveness, different diagnostic performance and worse clinical outcomes, with higher mortality. This thesis studies different aspects potentially implicated in this worse evolution. It includes three studies: first, a disaggregated analysis of the characteristics of women with acute coronary syndrome without ST elevation (NSTE-ACS) and the determinants associated with the type of treatment strategy used (conservative vs early invasive). Secondly, it measures the accessibility to the health system of women with acute coronary syndrome with ST elevation (STE-ACS) and its effect on reperfusion and hospital mortality. Finally, it studies the validity of the ischemic risk score GRACE in the current Spanish population with ACS, according to the sex and type of ACS, and assesses whether the inclusion of the sex variable in the model can improve its prognostic accuracy.

Abstract:
Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) is a numerical tool for solving partial differential equation, LBM being a mesoscopic model dealing with the material containing a quantity of particles in order to simulate macroscopic phenomenon. As a numerical tool LBM has proved its capability to simulate complex fluid flow behaviours and more recently to process medical images. In the framework of image analysis, LBM is implemented to perform de-noising operation, image boundary detection and image segmentation. In addition, LBM has advantage of strong amenability to parallel computing, especially on low-cost, powerful graphics hardware (GPU).In this direction, the main purpose of this thesis is to develop a general parallel computational segmentation algorithm. We have proved the efficiency of the proposed original method through the segmentation of the wall of an aneurysm and associated with parent blood vessels, whole cerebral data-set and stent-assisted aneurysm. The parallel segmentation algorithm has been run on nVIDIA graphic card, and demonstrates that the speedup has been improved by more than 100 times under the same precision

Abstract:
The present thesis is an attempt towards achieving a better understanding of sound effects in SDH and their appropriate rendering on screen with an addressee-oriented scope. Sound effects have been included in various categorizations in AVT, however, their characteristics and functions in an audiovisual narrative have not been analysed in depth. For this reason, this study proposes a model of analysis for sound effects through a merge with Film Studies that could be useful to SDH practitioners. Still, determining the adequacy of the strategies applied cannot be complete without information from and about SDH users, which is where audience reception studies acquire specific importance. In the present case, audience is approached from the scope of language use, in the sense that deaf and hard-of-hearing audiences can be users of an oral language, a sign language, or both. The degree of familiarity with these representation systems has a series of implications when viewers are presented with verbal or non verbal strategies on screen. The verbal/non-verbal and the sing/oral language dichotomies have been the basis of the experimental design of this study. Meanwhile, the empirical studies carried out in the field of SDH have combined surveys measuring satisfaction and stated preferences mostly with eye-tracking for assessing viewer's perception (see Arnáiz-Uzquiza 2012, Miquel-Iriarte 2014), while viewer experience has not been previously included in a similar mixed-method design. Therefore, the methodology of the experimental part of the study assesses both preferences regarding verbal and non verbal strategies but also viewers' narrative engagement and enjoyment when the above-mentioned strategies are applied. The experiment was carried out in Spain and, specifically, with deaf and hard of hearing viewers coming from the region of Catalonia. Regarding stated preferences, the main findings suggest that both types of users (N = 40) accept verbal strategies, which coincides with the practice commonly applied in Spanish television. However, concerning different parameters that could be included in sound-effect labels, participants seem to be open to diversity, especially when it comes to factors like the source and the volume of the sound. With regard to the second level of reception, namely, the grades of narrative engagement and enjoyment of the audiovisual material, no significant differences were found between oral-language users (N = 21) and sign-language users (N = 25), when presented with verbal and non-verbal representation strategies. Meanwhile, the relationship between the component of engagement and enjoyment has been confirmed, demonstrating the prospects offered by the methodology selected for measuring viewer experience for deaf and hard of hearing audiences. These results suggest that the narrative experience at the level of engagement with and enjoyment of the narrative is similar, regardless of the language profile of viewers and strategy presented. However, there is a positive tendency with respect to preferences towards verbal strategies and the inclusion of different labels for the same sound effect, which could pave the way towards further research in creative SDH. Finally, despite the limitations of the study, it constitutes a first attempt in merging viewer experience and SDH, while providing a wide overview of sound effects and their functions in an audiovisual narrative.

Abstract:
Every day, thousands of users with non-technical knowledge publish web content on blogs, wikis, social networks, etc. Although there are accessibility recommendations, such as WCAG and ATAG W3C guidelines, and that they have become standards (ISO/IEC 40500: 2012, UNE 139803: 2012 in Spain, or Section 508 in United States) and even mandatory laws, web accessibility is still a feature rarely implemented today. Users, unconscious of accessibility requirements, keep on publishing content which presents barriers to people with disabilities, and which impact their civil rights. This PhD explores this issue, aiming at find a solution, and puts the focus on the communication of accessibility barriers to people who publish web content without technical knowledge. The hypothesis underlying the thesis is that «reducing the complexity of the information related with accessibility would help the application of accessible criteria in authoring, and would increase the overall quality of web content». With techniques related with DCU and Semiotics Engineering (IngSem), the PhD thesis makes a proposal of communication of accessibility barriers, demonstrated through a proof of concept, the Emphatic Editor for Accessibility (EE4A).

Abstract:
This article describes how telecommunication has a strategic role in national development, which requires a large amount of funding in Indonesia, in spite of the limited financial support from the government. The dynamics of telecommunication law has provided a clear direction, from monopoly to healthy competition. It is important for foreign investment to be an option that needs to be harmonized with the applicable law of telecommunication. Four main constructs have been identified as important issues to be discussed are Social Welfare (SW); Global Village (GV); Foreign Direct Investiment (FDI); and Law Telecomunication (LT). In conclusion, two quality actions are proposed to accelerate fair accesibility through law of telecommunication in global village setting. The first quality action is to accelerate SW through fair accessibility in GV setting and FDI. The second quality action is to accelerate SW through fair accessibility based on FDI and LT.
