Abstract:
People with disabilities face a series of constraints when visiting a tourism destination. These constraints have a disproportionate effect on their behaviour compared to those without disabilities. The first article of this thesis aims to study these constraints by providing a measurement scale. In the second article, perceived value of accessibility, satisfaction and loyalty behavioural components are investigated in the context of a religious destination. In the third article, the theoretical model sets out the effects of the most important perceived constraints on the behaviour of tourists with disabilities. Results show tourism constraints have a negative effect on the perceived value of accessibility, and on loyalty. The general contribution of this thesis is the creation of a behavioural model for tourists with disabilities in a destination. Any destination or manager focusing on this market segment must consider all these behavioural factors, and prioritize eliminating, or at least minimising, these constraints

Viljoen, A. J. (Albertus Johannes). "Tswaing, a place of commemoration and reminiscence : making the natural environment accessible to all." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/31584.

Abstract:
The Tswaing Meteorite Crater, formed 220 000 years ago, on the farm of Zoutpan, (or also known as the Pretoria Saltpan), had been a topographic and geological riddle for a long period of time. The gathering of salt from the crater was its main attraction for many groups that flocked to the crater, which later became an important beacon of infrastructure, becoming the largest producer of Soda and Salt in the Transvaal in the early 1900’s. Knowledge is an intangible quality of the cultural landscape and its history which can be lost in the blink of an eye if it is not preserved, commemorated and conserved for future generations. Through the investigation of Inclusive Design and the application of its principles, the narrative which is Tswaing, can be made accessible to all by revealing the concealed narrative of the place, tangible and intangible, through time. The afterthought or lack of design for disabled individuals can be seen in many projects. By ensuring accessibility is part of the design process from the onset of the project, valuable resources are not needlessly wasted later. As a result the cultural landscape and its secrets can be uncovered and shared with all.
Dissertation ML(Prof)--University of Pretoria, 2012.
Architecture
unrestricted

Abstract:

This is an analysis of the potential for creating a sustainable value-chain for tourism in the Nampula province in northern Mozambique. Research for this analysis has been conducted both in Mozambique from a supply and community perspective and from the international demand level in Sweden. The study establishes that Nampula has the resources in the form of scenic landscapes, pristine beaches and a rich cultural and historical heritage that give ample potential to build a tourism industry. There are however, several obstacles that have to be overcome if the development of a tourism industry is to become reality. These obstacles include poor infrastructure, problems of marketing, a rather unvaried tourism supply, financial and monetary policy issues, low skills and knowledge, low integration of local production with the tourism sector, intricate bureaucracy, insufficient dialogue and socio- cultural issues.Analyses of international demand show a view of Mozambique as an expensive tourist destination with lower standards than competing destinations with similar price-levels. Marketing of tourism supply in Mozambique, and especially in Nampula, do not reach the international tourism market to any substantial degree and what actually does reach the market caters more for the luxury end.The most important conclusions drawn from this study are that substantial infrastructural development is needed on all levels and that there is a need to incorporate sustainable thinking within all measures and activities regarding tourism development. Furthermore, in order to attract larger volumes and different categories of tourists, diversification of tourist activities is required together with general improvements in standards of facilities and value-for-money. Regional cooperation and a wider focus on Nampula’s tourist-attracting opportunities such as culture-conscious tourism might help to create a local “trademark” and improve marketing options and possibilities. There is also need for increased access to basic education and information to facilitate the integration of local communities with the tourism sector. In addition, increased cross-sector coordination and dialogue are vital to an integrated and sustainable development of the tourism sector. For example, local agricultural development and improved distribution channels should not only be regarded as ends in themselves but also as beneficial towards the tourism industry – and vice versa.

Abstract:
This Minor Field Study, undertaken as a Bachelor’s Thesis within the field of tourism, examines the role of entrepreneurship in the socialist state of Cuba. The study focuses on the business and ownership of private room renting, called Casas Particulares; examining influencing factors, means and implications of the business. Recent political changes has lead to a more encouraging approach towards private businesses, allowing Casas Particulares to become one of the most common forms of tourist accommodation. From examining the role of tourism entrepreneurship in a strictly regulated country the aim is to develop the knowledge and stereotype perception of entrepreneurship and the entrepreneur. Cuba is developing into a popular destination for tourists. Countless of Cubans are now employed or self-employed within the tourism industry where the Cuban form of Bed & Breakfast, Casas Particulares, is the most frequent profession (Cerviño and Cubillo, 2005). Gilmore and Pine (2007) highlight that individuals more and more crave for authenticity and people seek engagement and personal experiences. Findings suggested that tourists visited Cuba and chose Casas Particulares as accommodation urged by the want to experience the island “before it changes” and to meet the “real” Cuba, i.e. seeking authenticity. Cuba is a country with strong governmental control and regulation where contextual factors have shown to be imperative in the development of entrepreneurship. Holmquist (2009) distinguishes the connection between contextual factors and entrepreneurship through highlighting the context as a determining factor for recognising entrepreneurial ventures, or through changes in the context enabling the recognition. The role of the context can only be acknowledged as crucial for the existence of Casas Particulares, as well as any entrepreneurial activity in Cuba. Engaging in Casas Particulares can be seen as a venture challenging the norm of the Cuban society.

Abstract:
We as humans seek connections and closeness, and psychology enlightens us as to why that is. Our close relationships are essential to our health, well-being, personal happiness, and even personality develop - ment. (1.) These are the bonds that hold together our minds on a small scale and hold together our society on a bigger scale. For it being such an essen - tial part of our life, why is it that so many of us feel lost when it comes to building a strong bond with a person? Closeness and intimacy can express themselves in many ways, and these expressions differ from person to person. We get taught by things we see in the media, on the streets, in society. Like holding hands, kisses, and the giving of gifts. Then there is what we see from our parents and our family. Our personal background shapes our idea of how inti - macy is expressed. Per usual the majority of what we know on how to form strong relations is expe - rience-based knowledge, either our own or that of the people close to us. But what about all the knowl - edge out there scientifically captured from the wild, don’t we have access to this? And if so why are we not engaging with it? Building on the main psychological concepts of inti - macy I aim to make a bridge between the academic world and the real world.(2) As a student, I have access to certain knowledge and as a designer, I can figure out how to communicate them. I am exploring how I can make intimacy visible, tangible, and with that, more readily available. I am doing this by designing artifacts that act between two people. These artifacts aim to facilitate intimate practices that inspire trust, closeness, and self-disclosure. 1. Mashek and Aron. Handbook of Closeness and Intimacy. (New York: Routledge, 2013). 2. Abstract:
The tourist activity develops in the contemporaneity as a phenomenon that displaces a great volume of people who leave their daily routine, in search of new experiences, fulfilling a role in the quality of life to the human being. Different from a thinking of a recent past, the tourism policy of nowadays strives to assume a posture of greater inclusion, giving opportunity of omitted groups to participate in activities associated to tourism, in particular the disabled people. As an essential circumstance for the inclusion of people with disabilities (PwD), the accessibility and its dimensions, together with universal design and assistive technology, allow everyone, as well, people with disabilities to reach, enter and enjoy spaces, products and services with autonomy and security. This reality lacks studies that come to ascertain the relation between tourism and accessibility through the knowledge produced in the postgraduate courses. Thus, this dissertation has as main objective, to elaborate a theoretical analysis on tourism and accessibility in postgraduate courses in Brazil between 1987 and 2016, encompassing the production of theses and dissertations in this period. In order to reach the proposed objectives, this investigation is supported by a bibliographic research of literature available, revision about the proposed themes and analysis of postgraduate productions (Theses and Dissertations). As a result, were analyzed 98 theses and dissertations produced in Postgraduate Education Institutions in Brazil that showed a similarity on study topics between accessibility and tourism in terms of multidisciplinarity and interdisciplinarity with other areas of knowledge. Studies on accessibility and tourism arises only after the 2000s, denoting a certain joviality in the development of this theme in the production of knowledge. Finally, its realized that accessibility is supported by broad legislation, but so far extent these laws are ignored or unknown by the various stakeholders involved, resulting in exclusion and prejudices against people with disabilities in various spheres of society, as well as in tourism

Abstract:
Limited and inequitable access to skilled maternal and newborn healthcare has been identified as a major contributory factor to poor maternal and newborn health in sub-Saharan African countries, including Ghana. To address the problem of access, the government of Ghana, in 2003, pioneered and is implementing a new maternal healthcare policy that provides free maternity care at the point of delivery in all public and mission health facilities to ensure increased and equitable access and use of skilled maternal and newborn healthcare services. The aim of this doctoral study is to explore how the introduction of the free maternal health policy in Ghana affects access, equity of access, and to investigate barriers to accessibility and utilization of skilled maternal and newborn health services. It does this using data from the Ghana Maternal Health Survey 2007, in combination with qualitative data generated from ethnographic style in-depth interviews and focus group discussions that the author originally conducted with a total of 185 expectant and lactating mothers, and 20 health care providers and policy-makers in six communities in Ghana between November 2011 and June 2012. Survey data suggest that accessibility to, and utilization of skilled antenatal care, delivery in a health facility, delivery with a skilled birth attendant, as well as other post-natal care services have increased by an average of 8% since the introduction of the policy (i.e. between 2003 and 2007).

Abstract:
Due to accessibility barriers, people with disabilities do not have the sameopportunities to participate in tourism activities as others. This is a problem that canbe seen worldwide, with Sweden not being an exception. In this study, a survey hasbeen used to collect comprehensive data from people with mobility impairments inorder to identify possible improvements for the tourism industry in Sweden. Theresult shows that the barriers are mainly associated with the physical environment, access to information and attitudes. This in turns has contributed to suggestedimplications for both actors in the tourism industry and the society. The implicationsconcern prioritizing accessibility improvements, communicating reliableinformation, increasing co-operations, receiving inputs from experts, increasingcompetence among personnel and making right decisions from the start.

Abstract:
The tourism sector is one of the world's most comprehensive sectors, and it’s developing rapidly, assuming that international travel will increase significantly in the future. The fact that the tourism sector is growing and developing at such a rapid pace also means that the effects both positive and negative increase and will continue to increase. For a continued increase in tourism, a long-term, sustainable plan and development is required. Today, the concept of sustainable tourism is a well-used concept that involves three dimensions, the environmental dimension that protects and preserves the environment. The economic, to maintain a long time economic vitality and the social dimension that adress social justice. The term sustainable tourism is in line with the concept of sustainability that implies development for the future. Today there is many types of travel concept, one of them is all-inclusive which is a popular concept that is growing. The concept it is also criticized for that it does not promote sustainable tourism and development. This study examines Swedish travelers' views on sustainability on the all-inclusive concept. Based on a theoretical framework on the importance of sustainable tourism as well as research on the behavior of the tourist and by means of an empirical survey, the study can demonstrate whether there is awareness of the travelers about sustainability. The study shows empirical evidence that Swedish travelers are aware of sustainability and sustainable tourism, but they do not always act consciousness.

Abstract:
The tourism is an inherent part of humans life because the desire to travel and experience has become a part of current life style. But also the tourism represents the need of self-realization that everybody without any difference wants to satisfy. Therefore it is important to enable as large spectrum of people (healthy as well as disabled) as possible to travel. The main goal of the dissertation thesis is to analyse specific Leeds of disabled people within their participation in tourism activities. The partial goal is to describe the accessible tourism issues, recommend mesures in the field of accomodation and catering facilities and transport services that would lead to the satisfaction of disabled people needs and last but not least to point to an importance of observing the rules when treating disabled people. The dissertation thesis is devided into eight chapters that solve issues of making tourism accessible to disabled people. The part of the thesis is dedicated to the principles of providing informations about accessibility and particular attention is payed to specific needs of disabled people in case of using accomodatin and catering facilities and means of transport. Abstract:
The development of access services that provide a way to overcome cognitive barriers in audiovisual communication is gaining momentum. One example is the academic attention that some text simplification methods, such as Easy-to-Read (E2R), have received in the last few years. While it has been shown that E2R has enabled access for persons with reading and learning difficulties in written communication, its realisation in multimodal formats, like audiovisual contexts, is lagging. This PhD thesis aims to develop an Easy-to-Read audiovisual content by investigating the following research question: can Easy-to-Read be used to simplify audiovisual content to make it more accessible for people with reading and learning difficulties? The PhD encompasses five, peer-reviewed publications. The research conducted has been labelled as applied research within the applied branch of translation studies. In this sense, the thesis considers access services as a whole (content and technology). In other words, it approaches the proposed easy access services by considering that the AV content needs to be Easy-to-Read as well as the ease of access to the service and its operation on the whole. The methodology has been categorised as applied research (Saldanha & O’Brien, 2014; Williams & Chesterman, 2002). As such, it borrows concepts and outputs from the fields of audiovisual translation and text simplification to test the hypothesis stated: that E2R-simplified AV content is easier to read and understand by persons with reading and learning difficulties. The first three articles draw their conclusion from secondary data. By doing this, the following expectations were set: gaining a deeper understanding about Easy-to-Read as an access service (Article 1), and the effects of adding a layer of E2R to existing workflows in the case of audio descriptions (Article 2). For its part, Article 3 aimed to classify E2R as translations within the AVT landscape by drawing upon Gottlieb’s (2005) semiotic classification. Conversely, the last two articles are case studies with a single unit of investigation (Williams & Chesterman, 2002). The fact that the case studies were carried out towards the end of the PhD allowed for additional insight. These included how to identify parameters for creating subtitles (Article 4), and how such Easy-to-Read subtitles are received by end-users with reading and learning difficulties (Article 5). Overall, the conclusions indicate that text simplification recommendations taken from Easy-to-Read can be used to generate audiovisual content that is accessible for audiences with reading and learning difficulties. Such new E2R access services may render the message by using equivalent or different semantic material than their standard counterparts (e.g., subtitles, audio descriptions). Likewise, sometimes E2R access services may differ semiotically from standard access services. Lastly, as digital products, E2R access services ought to be WCAG-compliant. Lastly, this thesis has been labelled as an initial contribution to the field of Easy-to-Read audiovisual content. Though the conclusions withdrawn cannot be regarded as conclusive, the procedures and practices described can be transferred to similar cases and, thus, foster and facilitate the development of easy multimode access services.

Abstract:
This essay concerns the tourist destination Alanya in Turkey from a sustainable perspective and the impact all-inclusivehotels have on the destination. The purpose of the essay is to examine social, economic and environmental impacts in Alanya. To analyse it we use theories of sustainable development and sustainable tourism together with theories of all-inclusivehotels benefits and disadvantages. A field- and interview survey was conducted in Alanya to study the social effect on the destination. Tourist, locals and employees working condition are examined. Furthermore the essay analyses international travel agencies and all-inclusivehotels environmental and economic impacts. Conclusion of the essay presents that Alanya is not only a charter destination, it’s an all-inclusive destination. The rapid grow of all-inclusivehotels in Alanya have affected an unsustainable development in the destination.

This analysis has been conducted to show that it is possible to combine accessibility, accessible evacuation and cultural heritage buildings, in this case especially Kalmar residence, without distorting the building. The study was performed as a case study. By studying laws, regulations and rules as well as interviewing experts and comparing solutions with other buildings, the residence will become accessible. The aim of this work is to deliver a solution proposal. This proposal should also be used as an inspiration for future projects of similar complex types. The study has come to the conclusion that there is a need for more laws and rules on accessible evacuation and that accessibility is an aspect that should be taken more into consideration in cultural heritage buildings. It is important that everyone can take part in society on an equal basis.

The Mobile phone has contributed to massive changes in the way that human beings communicate with each other and is a part of society’s globalization. Opinions differ in the area of user interface where some feel that mobile phones exclude users such as senior citizens or users with an intellectual or a physical disability.

Universal Design –‘design for all’, is a vision that intends to bring about settings, products and services that suits as many people as possible irrespective of an individual’s needs and prospects. The criteria for ‘design for all’ are among other things flexibility, user friendliness, comprehensibility and a high tolerance for mistakes.

The purpose of this essay was to investigate the mobile phones graphic user-interface from the theory of a universal design. From this general purpose the study looked more closely at senior citizens perspective of mobile phones graphic user-interface. To achieve empirical support for the study a qualitative method in the form of interviews was used. All of the individuals that participated in the study felt that the mobile phone is a very good and beneficial invention. Mobile phones bring about a feeling of security and safety since one can always reach family and friends in the event of a crisis. The participants were included in the study if they were capable of using mobile phones to reach others and for others to reach them. However, individual’s that did not have the technical ability to understand the other possible functions of the user-interface were excluded from the study. It is difficult to provide a interface that is Universal, because every individual is unique.

Abstract:
Tourism and leisure activities are an essential part of many people's lives, but for people with disabilities (PwD), their involvement can be highly conditional. The issue of active participation and the inclusion of PwD in all parts of society is increasingly being raised and the need for accessibility is growing. This study aims to investigate how tourism and activity companies in Jämtland County works to adapt and customize their activities to include individuals with physical disabilities. The study had a qualitative method with semi-structured interviews as the key focus for collecting empirical data. The result indicates that the majority of businesses do not currently offer activities that are specifically tailored to PwD, but for most of the companies these activities can be adjusted if there is a demand for it. Market demand controls the companies’ range of activities and a lack of demand from PwD for accessible activities has been identified. The conclusion describes that the absence of demand from PwD is the reason for the lack of accessible activities and that the companies specify resources such as knowledge and financial factors as challenging for the development of accessible activities.

2020-06-08

Abstract:
Nowadays, the accessibility of a hotel unit is a determining factor in the choice of the hotel, by the client. The surrounding territory should be related with the respective tourism offer, in order to generate balance and dynamics between them. Increasingly, customers are defending Sustainability and are supporting measures related to the subject. Discussing the theme of Accessibility and its relation with Hospitality, it is possible to affirm that there is a little explored market, considered a niche market. Demand in this area requires a better response of capacity by the supply side. In this way, it will be relevant to know the opinions of the clients, human resources and operators that generate added value and that make accessible tourism grow. Through questionnaires and interviews I try to know the reality of this theme, with a view to make easier the implementation of new solutions in the hotel unit. In conclusion there is little knowledge about the matter and there is room for awareness raising with a view to an accessible future. During the internship held at Hotel Playa Real, as Receptionist, from April to June 2018, other functions were performed such as Public Relations, Designer, DJ, Bar Assistant. At the beginning of the internship, was identified the accessibility inside the hotel and the surrounding territory. The verification of lack of measures that would allow the inclusion of accessible hotels. During the internship, small improvements were implemented, with a view to increasing them in number and quality, for the long-term.

Abstract:
The main objective of this study is to discuss the problem of accessible hotels. This is part of the broader issue of accessible tourism or tourism for all or inclusive tourism. I intend to show that, although there are still many gaps in this area there have been significant steps, including at the legislative level, for hotels to allow people with special needs the enjoyment of products, services and environments, independently and with equity and dignity. It is found that the number of people with some limitation - and the senior tourism growth due to the rapid aging of the population -which traveling and staying in hotel units continues to increase, so I want to emphasize that this circumstance increases the segment value of accessible tourism in the hotel market. Studies and/or reports show the number of people some limitation along with the senior tourism tend to increase with – more - travelling and hotel stays, therefore I want to show how important this segment is and will be within the hotel market. I argue that accessible hotels should be seen as an opportunity rather than as an obligation, because the hotels that invest in accessibility of infrastructure and tourist services have an excellent opportunity to gain new customers and increase their revenues. Through the study of three Portuguese hotels, I try to find out the following guide to good accessibility practices in hospitality and the Portuguese standard of quality in hotels. Because much remains to be done, I propose more awareness actions with the hoteliers’ leaders and employees, and also more training activities in Tourism Schools to respond to the challenge of accessible hotels, which is a strategic area for the promotion of fundamental rights for people with disabilities.

Loitsch, Claudia. "Designing Accessible User Interfaces for All by Means of Adaptive Systems." Doctoral thesis, 2018. https://tud.qucosa.de/id/qucosa%3A31984.

Full text
Abstract:
Accessible user interfaces are useful for people from a population with the widest range of capabilities. People with severe impairments primarily benefit from assistive technology while built-in software-based accessibility functionality and its customisation is advantageous to many other people who experience temporary or situational disabilities. However, increasing software customisation does not naturally result in better user interfaces or reduces barriers. Quite the reverse! Finding proper adjustments requires high computer literacy. Moreover, users must create mental models for different user interfaces and must be able to translate between them back and forth because several digital devices are used sequentially or simultaneous for multifaceted contexts. This thesis investigates accessible design for multifaceted usage of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) such as desktop, mobile devices, web-based applications or ubiquitous services to address people from a population with the widest range of capabilities. Particular attention is given to user-adaptive systems because they can overcome the limitations of manual forms of personalisation and thus can lead to better user interfaces for all people. The presented work is organised in three parts. The first part elaborates the foundations of accessible design. A distinctive domain of a user-adaptive systems called Adaptive Inclusive Interactive System (AIIS) is introduced to show personalisation embodies a new form of accessible design. AIISs distinguish from other user-adaptive systems because they take disability as a starting point for user modelling. Against the background of existing classifications, the common ground between AIIS and other domains of user-adaptive systems is elaborated and distinctive features of AIIS are discussed. The adaptor type of inference is newly introduced in order to describe use-adaptive systems adapting a single application and those considering the interplay of accessibility aids available on an interactive device. More specifically, the interaction within and across different configuration layers (i.e.\,operating system, application, assistive technology, web) is taken into account by inferring from existing knowledge to customisation for new platforms. Furthermore, functional requirements and design choices for AIISs are demonstrated along with five specific use cases; in particular respecting information appliances in ubiquitous or individual environments, highly customisable general purpose computers, multi-user application contexts and multi-screen behaviour. In addition, a systematic literature review of AIISs was conducted to discuss limitations of current approaches and to analyse the degree of user diversity targeted by existing systems. Results show, although multi-device and context-sensitive approaches are widely addressed, identified challenges are not sufficiently treated. Results of the literature survey show further, the adaptation theory of AIISs is mostly based on stereotypical assumptions about commonly known groups of impairments. A main limitation of stereotypes is that within-group diversity cannot be modelled. Feature-based user models such as needs and preferences are promising but seldom applied by AIISs. The second part of this thesis describes a knowledge-based approach to user interface adaptation from preferences and for special needs. The approach was implemented as the Rule-based Matchmaker (RBMM) component of the Global Public Inclusive Infrastructure (GPII). The GPII is a software architecture to facilitate the auto-configuration of ICT such as desktop computers running MS Windows or Linux, Android-based mobile devices or public terminals such as automated teller machines. Compared to the state of the art, the inference of the proposed knowledge-approach is not encoded into explicit rules deriving adaptations from impairment groups by propositional logic. Instead, a domain ontology and logical assertions were formalised to allow inferences compatible with those applied by accessibility experts who set-up interactive devices for people with disabilities. This knowledge was described in a generic and feature-based manner to ensure scalability of the inference about diverse user demands and heterogeneous accessibility aids. The formalisation of the domain knowledge and the logical rules fulfil several challenges, including deducing configurations in cases where a user need cannot be satisfied by device customisation or can be satisfied by a multitude of accessibility aids that interfere with one another. As the proposed system emulates decision-making of accessibility experts, automatically deduced configurations were validated against manual configurations of ten accessibility experts. Results show, the average matching score of the developed system is high. Thus, the proposed system can be considered being capable of making precise decisions towards personalising user interfaces based on user needs and preferences. Third part of this thesis comprises three empirical studies in order to discover specific domain knowledge with respect to insufficiently investigated AIISs-specific use cases as well as ICT-related requirements of certain user groups. Findings of this part of the thesis can be put to partial use -- for instance -- by extending the domain ontology of the proposed knowledge-based approach to user interface adaptation from preferences and for special needs. The first foundational user study investigates what people with disabilities know about their needs and preferences. The results show, user models must include ICT-related difficulties described at a more abstract level in addition to needs and preferences. Findings also demonstrate a wide range of individual requirements that must be considered by AIIS. Knowledge obtained from this user study was primarily used to derive requirements for the implemented RBMM. The second user study addresses a specific use case of AIIS, one that targets multi-user applications. More specifically, contradicting preferences in multi-user application contexts were analysed. Results comprise conflict resolution approaches that can be applied and further investigated by user-adaptive systems targeting this specific use case. A third user study explores ICT-related requirements of people with dementia because cognitive disabilities are not adequately covered by accessible design. The findings indicate an intersection of requirements with existing accessibility guidelines but they emphasise aspects not covered previously.

100
Very little literature and research have been published on accessible tourism until the early 1990s. These studies all get a consistent conclusion that is the needs of people with disabilities in accessible tourism are always ignored. There are a lot of problems about developing accessible tourism. Negative attitudes from the travel agency sector towards people with disabilities emerged as the single greatest complaint. A good travel agent can facilitate travel while a poor one creates another obstacle to participation in travel by people with disabilities. The purpose of the study is to understand the current situation of accessible tourism in Taiwan, the barriers, and the possible solution to develop accessible tourism. The research was conducted using the qualitative methodology, a case study, with profile of interviewers involved one accessible tourism operator, five travel agency directors, one tour guide, one tour leader, and one scholar. The results indicated that there is little travel agency focus on accessible tourism in Taiwan. The main reason is that most travel agency has difficulties in understanding the real needs of people with disabilities. It is also found that the cost is the key barrier in developing accessible tourism. Moreover, the higher risk, dining environment, accommodation, route, spot, and staff arrangements are also the determinants that affect the development. Finally, the conclusions and recommendations provide some insight and reference about developing accessible tourism.

Abstract:
107
Tourism is simple for many people, but it is tough for handicapped. There are currently 1.16 million persons with physical and mental disabilities in Taiwan, with the largest number persons of functional moving limitations. In addition, Taiwan has officially become an aging society this year. It is urgent to provide a friendly and accessible tourism environment. The purpose of this study is to combine service design viewpoints and methods with user experience research and user interface design in developing an accessible tourism Website for these persons. By means of exploring the context behavior, needs, and feelings of accessible tourists on the travel experience, an ideal accessible tourism App was created in this study. It is expected that users will have better service experience in accessible tourism. The service design method in this study consists of four stages: (1) Discover: The conduct of literature collection and analysis of accessible tourism and design methods to help structure the theory and foundation of the study; (2) Define: Carrying out the user experience research, in order to a comprehensive understanding of the user in the tourism experience encountered problems and needs. Through persona, customer journey map, priority matrix, the accessible tourism app design strategy was summed up; (3) Develop: Designing an ideal app prototype that meets the needs of the user and provides a follow-up evaluation; (4) Deliver: Conducting design evaluation and interview of app prototype and conclude the discussion and suggestion. Based on the results of the study, the following items are research findings to help create the accessible tourism and app: 1. The updating and maintenance of information are more important than the tools (websites, apps). 2. The route planning of the main line can be used with 720 photos. 3. Accessible tourism information is huge, and needs to think carefully about how to collect and integrate. 4. The way to spread accessible tourism information and build an accessible tourism community is important. 5. Construction accessible tourism platform should meet its cooperation model.

Dissertation ML(Prof )--University of Pretoria, 2014
gm2014
Architecture
ML(Prof)
Unrestricted

Abstract:
The world is experiencing the beginning of the fourth Industrial Revolution, responsible for implementing a new digitalization era. This revolution originated in manufacturing, with industry 4.0 bringing a new reality to organizations. However, the scope of this new technological revolution is vast, and other sectors can benefit from the new digital era. In the Services Industry, tourism is an example of that, as Tourism 4.0 is the result of the impact of the fourth industrial revolution in this sector. Tourism 4.0 is the result of the impact of the fourth industrial revolution in tourism. An interesting challenge that this technological era brings to tourism is the social inclusion of people with disabilities. The accessible tourism market reveals huge potential, but despite this, this market is still largely ignored. Several technologies that promoted the fourth industrial revolution present capabilities to promote accessible tourism by improving tourism’s access conditions to people with disabilities. The present work developed a study in accessible tourism, understanding the main requirements for this market, and conceptualizing a Web application, for promoting accessibility in tourism. This Web application work as a mediator between the principal stakeholders. To gather requirements for the system, a triangulation matrix was elaborated using three methodological approaches: i) Literature Review; ii) website accessibility analysis of hotels located in the central region of Portugal; and iii) content analysis of some concurrent platforms. The requirements triangulation matrix allowed the identification of what requirements are crucial for the system success, which were used to conceptualize the solution with UML notation. This work intends to demonstrate the technological impacts of the fourth industrial revolution on society, especially on the promotion of a more accessible tourism

Thus, the demand with accessible environments grows up in Taiwan. In modernized countries, accessibility for tourism represents the respect toward every tour group, hoping they won’t lose the right of tourism due to being ph challenged or due to growing older. This research mainly focuses on the investigation of the public cognition, attitude and behavior of accessible tourism for the elderly. Through the designed scales of questionnaire, we can not only fine out the requirement of accessible tourism which the public mostly cares about, but also analyze the correlations between each designed construction via hypothesis. Snowball sampling was used in this research. We delivered 509 questionnaires and retrieved 452 valid ones. The overall response rate of this questionnaire survey is 77.9%. Through statistics and analysis, we discovered that there are two obvious moderate correlations toward senior citizen’s participation in accessible tourism. The first one is between the cognition and the attitude; the second one is between the attitude and the behavior.

Abstract:
107
The tourism industry’s economic efficiency is equal to traditional industries. The tourism industry can increase the foreign exchange earnings of the nation and promote international interactions, which offer a prosperous future for economic development. The main focus of developing a tourist attraction lies in holistic tourism competiveness. However, the variables that affect tourism competiveness can be nuanced and complicated. Moreover, those variables can constantly change with different contexts. Therefore, the meaning of tourism competiveness can change with various interpretations and perspectives. With the above rationale, the purpose of this study is to develop the framework and indices for evaluating the tourism competitiveness of cities and counties in Taiwan, which can be a useful tool for evaluating the competition for each tourist spot in Taiwan. Based on an analysis of data from the 2016 Report of Taiwan Tourism and Data of Directorate General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics, Executive Yuan, R.O.C., this study found three conclusions using a principal components analysis, a correlation and regression analysis, and the framework and twelve indices for evaluating the tourism competitiveness of cities and counties in Taiwan. The findings are as follows: (1) The proposed framework includes five dimensions, which are “tourism economy,” “tourism policy,” “tourism industry,” “environment in tourism,” and “tourism resources.” (2) The indices for evaluating tourism competitiveness are “tourism economy-travel expenses,” “tourism policy-the Taiwan Trip planner and bus route,” “tourism resources-department stores and shopping malls,” “tourism industry-the amount of accommodation,” and “environment in tourism-the crime rates.” (3) The top five cities ranked by tourism competitiveness in Taiwan are Taipei City, New Taipei City, Kaohsiung, Taichung, and Tainan. Keywords: Principal components analysis, tourism competiveness, correlation analysis.

Abstract:
Despite the exponential growth of the tourism sector in the last decades, which helped societies and economies a lot, such as the Portugal ones, yet it is not possible to say that tourism is accessible to all individuals, regardless of their condition, with some type of disability. In fact, there are several examples of organizations associated with tourism that do not have basic accessibility conditions and provided for in legislation. Considering this situation, this project aims, within the scope of museological centers, to approach two museums considered good examples within the area of accessibility, specifically the Museum of Leiria and the National Museum Machado de Castro. In this way, a brief review of the literature was developed that sought to consolidate knowledge related to concepts such as tourism and its evolution, culture and cultural heritage, disability and accessibility and museums as attractions for the tourism sector, always taking into account, on the one hand legislation considered timely to present, and on the other hand the Portuguese case, where both museums are located, chosen for the convenience of their location. After this literature review was presented the methodology of this investigation, which is assumed to be mixed, concentrating both the qualitative methodology, through depth interviews, and the quantitative methodology, through questionnaire surveys, applied in the two museums defined, thus, as a study of case. As it should be, the results of both methodologies were analyzed and the main conclusions were presented. Thus, with this investigation, it was possible to conclude that both museums are considered accessible by their visitors, but that constant efforts must be made to train their own employees to act in accordance with the situations, and also to evolve in terms of accessibility and signage, always aiming to improve the experience of those who visit the Museum of Leiria and the National Museum Machado de Castro.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the accuracy of accessibility information for parks and the related experiences of visitors. It explores whether or not there is a gap between the information that is made available to the public and the experiences that are available on the ground. People with mobility impairments encounter barriers to movement. The provision of information on accessibility may assist those with impairments to select recreational opportunities that are compatible with their interests and abilities. Accordingly, the availability and accuracy of information on accessibility is evaluated through comparison with on-site field observations. Four parks of different management types – local, regional, provincial and national – are examined. Promotional information was gathered primarily from brochures and websites. Key informant interviews were conducted and on-site measurements of accessibility were taken. The quantity and accuracy of information on accessibility varied between the parks. Inconsistencies were found between the information on accessibility and the on-site situations. Details on park features like parking, trails, washrooms, visitor centers and campsites lacked volume, specifics and accuracy, and these features are important to individuals with a mobility impairment. Stronger links should be established between the monitoring of accessibility and the timely, accurate provision of accessibility information. There is willingness among park officials to address accessibility issues but financial constraints are widely regarded as being an impediment to action. As such, physical improvements to accessibility are most likely to occur as a part of general maintenance schedules. Nevertheless, regular systematic monitoring and reporting is not expensive and would benefit park management by enabling them to provide more accurate information to the public. The study also suggests that greater engagement with the impaired community could be beneficial to parks, official, and visitors.

Lalonde, Angelique Maria Gabrielle. "Embodying asana in all new places: transformational ethics, yoga tourism and sensual awakenings." Thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1828/4453.

Full text
Abstract:
Yoga has been an organizing feature of community for thousands of years, shaping and being shaped by the bodies, minds, spiritual worlds and social relationships of its practitioners. Over the course of the last century, it has become a global celebrity-endorsed exemplification of how to live a “good” life and been transformed from the “exotic,” grotesque menageries of ascetic “sinister yogis” and itinerant sages, to define the fit, graceful, radiant, blissful personages of American supermodels and pop-stars. Yoga has moved from the ashrams of India to gyms, church basements and specialized studios of Europe, North America and Australia, and from these centers of economic and political power, to “exotic” peripheries through the global and bodily movements of world-travelers seeking self-discovery, health, spiritual transformation, and connection with the natural world in “less developed” locales. This dissertation explores and documents the movement of yoga-motivated travelers to tourism locales with no historical connection to yoga, asking questions about 1) how yoga travelers’ activities fit in larger contexts of ethical tourism and cross-cultural consumption as yoga travels across borders, 2) the role yoga plays in practitioners’ lives, shaping health, gender, sexuality, and lifestyle, 3) outcomes of sustained contemporary yoga practice on the bodies of practitioners, including affective transformation through bodily manipulation, the expansion of sensual awareness through breath, auditory techniques, meditation and mind-body synthesis, 4) how these bodily transformations are interpreted and applied to contemporary life through syncretic adaptations of yoga ethics from classical yoga texts with contemporary ethical discourses of environmentalism and consumer choice, and 5) how yoga tourists and the owners of yoga tourism locales view, interact with, and mobilize “foreign” locals and locales through sustainable development narratives and ideas of global community and universal spirituality. I apply contemporary anthropological agendas to yoga as a means to explore different ways of being alive, paying particular attention to how sensual potentials are brought to conscious experience by relational engagement with nature and culture, thus shaping our affective worlds. This dissertation charts intimate bodily and cross-cultural human relationships played out through yoga. It considers the spiritual, economic, political and cultural impacts of globalized yoga and yoga tourism. Close attention is paid to the experiential aspects of yoga and how yoga enlivens and relates to larger social narratives of nature sanctity under contemporary stresses of neoliberalism, including how yoga practitioners engage with the ethics of yoga and consumption to make lifestyle choices that align with political and economic concerns for viable ecological, social and cultural futures.
Graduate

By co-creating a new experience and value for disabled people, EZGO achieved the agency''s mission and objectives. The case of this research is the EZGO Accessible Tourism Alliance. The data source of this research included semi-structured interviews and documents provided by the non-profit organization including the history of EZGO Accessible Tourism Alliance, service flow chart, meeting records and training course materials. The main findings include: (1) EZGO Accessible Tourism Alliance is an interpersonal core strategic alliance. The vision of EZGO is to accomplish the agency''s mission and fulfill the values of the agency, which is another important factor that attracted other agencies to participate in the strategic alliance. (2) Drawing on learning theory, the EZGO Accessible Tourism Alliance’s strategy is adaptive and flexible. Through cross-division meetings, it established the mechanism that facilitated the coordination among different agencies. When facing complex situations for serving the disable people, it adopted the action research method to search for responsive solutions. (3) From the perspectives of the fifth disciplines and learning organization, EZGO Accessible Tourism Alliance organized various workshops and tourism activities to guide members of the agency staff and clients to exceed the original mental model and promote the knowledge and skillful learning.(4) Through principles of core co-creation framework, an interactive platform was created for members of the agencies and clients to share knowledge and information. (5) EZGO Accessible Tourism Alliance is an institutional organization instead of an entity .The resolutions from agencies were not mandated which might result in ineffective execution.

Abstract:
99
The protagonist in the story is a conservative physically disabled woman who was born and raised in a rural village of the past era, Ms. Kuei (a pseudonym), for she suffered from polio at age four and lost her ability to walk ever since. From the initial stage of feeling completely clueless, to blaming god and man, to accepting the fact, and to confronting the fate; apart from the need to face the stereotype endued by the traditional society, she also has to face various challenges in life. And even though God has granted her such a special turn in life, she is still able to overcome the difficulties and continue her journey bravely, and establishes a tourist agency solely aiming at promoting barrier-free travel, thus helps fulfill the dream of traveling abroad for the physically disabled. To see the face of life, this paper is to discuss and explore the course of life via the "narrative inquiry" approach, and by capturing its rich wisdom and experience, it is as well to construct a story text that belongs to hers and mine. In addition to seeing the face of Ms. Kuei’s life during the interaction in the writing process, my reflections towards life have been impacted and pounded as well. In this article, in Chapter One, "the departure of life, " it covers the research motives and background. In Chapter Two, "full of luggage," it covers the neo-adjuvant literature review. In Chapter Three, "dedicated flights," it covers the research methods and procedures. In Chapter Four, "traces of the journey," it covers the story co-constructed by the protagonist and I by using the thematic way. In Chapter Five, "profound marks," it covers the interpreted meaning after the story is recorded through the thematic analysis. In Chapter Six, "do not say good-bye," it covers my own reflections as the end of the story. Hopefully readers could experience and understand the sadness and happiness of those physically disabled as they are working with their efforts to forge ahead through this article.

Abstract:
96
In 1996, Council of Cultural Affairs has announced a policy to support local governments to organize their own festivals in cities and towns. Suddenly, a lot of festivals have proliferated all over the country. At the beginning, they have been boosted as one of the creative industries and have been constructed to attract tourists, to generate cultural and creative power. However, many festivals have been suspended or even terminated in recent years. What the worst is many festivals have been condemned by mass media as chaos, full of bewildering things and even scandals. But mass media cannot justify themselves because there are many faults in their reports. However, their comments on festivals have stimulated me to seek solution for all festivals in Taiwan. How can a local government construct one successful festivalNULL How can they sustain the festival and still get applause for many yearsNULL My research shows that some concepts and theories from cultural tourism will offer the solution. Since the latter half of 1970s, many anthropologists and social scientists have studied and published substantial works on tourism. Both symbolic cultural issues and socioeconomic issues in tourism have been deeply explored to provide insights into this leisure industry. One of the celebrated writer, Dean MacCannell, saw the tourists in pursuit of authenticity after finding themselves lost in this modern world. He also presented a model of modern society, i.e. structure genuine and spurious, to examine the social structure of modernity. His theories and model can be fully applied to the construction of festivals, which is regarded as one kind of cultural tourism nowadays. Genuine structure is composed of the values and material culture manifest in the true sights. The spurious side of the social structure of modernity is composed out of information, memories, images and other representations which become detached from genuine cultural elements. If one festival is built on the genuine structure of society, it is very likely to be a successful one.

Abstract:
96
Abstract Medical healthcare has become one of the world’s fastest-growing industries. Total global expenditure in 2005 has increased to 4,400 billions from 2001’s 3,300 billions. Furthermore, international tourism is currently the most vibrant and potential industry, regarded as a vital economic activity and an important source of revenue for both developing and underdeveloped countries. According to WHO’s report, a 22% share of worldwide GDP is estimated to be seen from the combination of medical healthcare industry and tourism industry in 2022. Accordingly, this study intends to explore the factors that are affecting Taiwanese medical healthcare package tour itinerary from the management and operation perspective of travel agencies and medical institutions, and by following the entirely new development of the integration of medical healthcare industry and tourism industry. A hierarchical structure composing all possible influential factors is drawn from the findings of literature research and interviews with related industrial experts. Finally, to investigate the factors that influence Taiwanese medical healthcare package tour itinerary, Analytic Hierachy Process (AHP) and rating of data analysis are then used to identify the relative significance and the priority of all components on each tier. Subject group of this study are selected from official registered travel agencies and medical institutions in and before 2008. Analysis results show that influential factors on the first tier assessment of criteria weighted are, in order of significance: promotion of international marketing, tour service, medical resources and horizontal coordination mechanism between industries. It is obvious that the result indicates the promotion of international marketing, tour service and medical resources are important factors that have an impact on the planning of Taiwanese medical healthcare package tour itinerary. Therefore, Taiwan should put more effort in enhancing its national image through promoting international marketing, building up a strong global brand of medical tourism, integrating tourism resources, increasing the visibility of scenic spots, and upgrading medical quality.

105
Broadcast TV channel advertising volume begin to decline year by year since 2010, the year 2014 is more recessional 3.66% than the year 2013, while satellite channel advertising volume in 2014 is more recessional 0.38% than the year 2013. Moreover, for-profit career’ quantities of TV program production,TV program issue、TV content industry and TV station industry decline to 2.67%、6.10%、3.02% and 3.13% respectively. Interestingly, the number of TV channels has have grown 2.73% instead. It's easy to find out Taiwan TV industry‘s fundamental problems ,which are too many channels and lack of income. In order to supply the channel enough playing time, they have to streamline the production costs or even manpower. Such a vicious cycle, causing the whole industry. Steve Perlman, the WebTV founder and former president, said “In the twentieth century, we played the right program at the right time.” Now, we are moving from that era to an era which have countless channels and unlimited demands. This shows that the television media has been in the deformation and transformation. Formerly the program broadcasted in the television station as long as the program could attract viewers to watch. Now the TV industry is not simply to compete with domestic industries, but has been fought in the channel around the world. Following the trend, the TV industry not only have to think about making a good program content but also publicizes program from showing the advantages to attract the audience's attention. The famous program producer of Columbia Broadcasting System(CBS)、American Broadcasting Company(ABC)and National Broadcasting Company(NBC),Fred Silverman, “Half of the successful program depends on the program itself, while the other half depends on how to promote the program.” Getting high ratings are not only for their own program schedule and demands, but also for how the audience gets the program information. Actually, television station and television network notice the program through the broadcast、online and printing the way of publicity. The role of publicity is far more than that, cultivates an emotion、reflects a recognition and encourages an attitude that may extend beyond the program. When the channel is devoted to make the program, the publicity becomes another focus. Without publicity, the program will have no audience,no matter how good the program is. It has been a basic common sense in the industry. The importance of publicity is that it can help individuals or groups to understand the program. When the publicity is overwhelming, shall we make the strategy random or planned? It seems that Taiwan's television is not yet the inked area. Expecting to learn the publicity field by the promotional video of “Fun Taiwan All Stars”. I engaged in television production for about ten years and television advertising production for about seven years When I start making TVC,I find that,to show the most important and attractive parts of the TVC in the short seconds,is really a difficult skill. I have taken an image training before and the training help me a lots. So when I undertake the promotional videos in the Discovery Group channel case,I can use television and advertisement these two kinds of productive methods skillfully so that the videos meet requirements for the channel. Back to the campus is not only for broadening my horizons and enriching the theoretical basis, but also for confirming that many productive techniques are actually beyond a strong theoretical basis. Two years of studying career, makes me more confident in my image production . The theories are my strongest patron and it also makes me feeling more convinced that my persistence is right. This thesis is not only self-realization, but also becomes effective reference for those who want to enter the industry.

Abstract:
It is estimated that 15% of the world population has a disability. Therefore, tourism companies should provide opportunities for people with disabilities to be part of and take full advantage of traveling and experiencing life. The problem arises from the lack of information, and access to it, that disabled tourists face when searching and planning their trips. The purpose of this study is to measure the impact of the benefits derived from the use of social media on the intentions to use them for traveling purposes in the disabled people’s market. A quantitative research approach was chosen to gather information among social media users with disabilities. The online questionnaire was developed based on the Conceptual Framework and adapted from literature. The survey was distributed online, through social media and email, directly, and with the support of institutions that work with and for people with disabilities. A statistical analysis was conducted through a Linear Regression to test the research hypotheses. Findings of the study stated that the three benefits analyzed – Functional, Social, and Hedonic and Psychological – have a positive, but low impact on the intentions of disabled tourists to use social media when planning and organizing their travels. Thus, the impact that the provision of specific information to potential customers with different disabilities by service companies and tourism enterprises may also have a positive impact on the business of these companies.

Master's thesis, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.26/32685.

Abstract:
This study wishes to understand the full scope of the hotel experience for those with a visual disability through the evaluation of their whole hotel process. In other words, the study focuses on everything from the acknowledgement of the will to travel, the research of information, the evaluation of alternatives, the decision-making and booking process to the actual stay and final thoughts. In addition, it aims to comprehend who these people travel with, what they need at their disposal, what their main challenges are and showcase potential suggestions. Interviews via phone were conducted to 11 members of the Coimbra branch of the Association for the Blind and Amblyopic of Portugal (Associação dos Cegos e Amblíopes de Portugal - ACAPO), which enabled the discussion of some relevant questions that, apart from matching the aim of the study, also allowed an awareness of the importance of this topic for both the hotel industry and the society in general. The study was able to examine the main challenges people with a visual disability face and identify the areas in which there is more vulnerability. It also concluded that the market is heterogeneous since not only there are different levels of disability, but also the way the disability itself is perceived and faced varies from person to person. Some of the challenges which were flagged are mitigated due to strategies developed by the actual disabled person; however, true integration will only be achieved with the existence of signposting which ensures the autonomy of those with a visual disability. It was also registered that hotel employees are helpful and try to aid people with a visual disability. Nevertheless, employees do not possess the necessary training to answer these guests’ basic needs. The industry must be made aware of small scale and low-cost changes which will improve the experience of people with disabilities.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT: The accessibility for people with special needs has been gaining importance worldwide. The search for a society centered on inclusion, civic responsibility and equality of rights is a secular aspiration that, nowadays, has been increasingly highlighted in the developed societies. The concern with these facts involves adaptations in the cities, which are sometimes hampered by architectural, structural, communicational and social barriers. The limitations found in the accessibility to tourism reflect this lack of sensitivity and awareness. This research undertook the study of the main aspects concerning the development of an accessible tourism, reflecting, particularly, on people suffering from reduced mobility, with the purpose of creating an offer that aims the growth of the accessible tourism in the Azores. The results of this study are based on interviews that pretend to collect information on the touristic offer available on Terceira Island and on questionnaires, through which it was intended to characterize the touristic demand and make a survey on the needs of people with disabilities when traveling. The data processing led us to conclude that the offer addressed to people with special needs, on Terceira Island, is almost absent, and the main difficulties are associated with the mobility, transport of belongings and carrying out daily tasks. Based on these results, we propose a suitable tourist product to people with reduced mobility, aiming to provide a quality touristic offer.

Abstract:
The main goal of this study is to discuss the quality of the service provided to guests with special access needs. This issue fits into the theme of accessible tourism, or inclusive tourism, or tourism for all. We intend to understand the importance that hoteliers and hotel employees give to the service provided to tourists with special access needs and how it influences their satisfaction, showing the need for investment and awareness on accessible tourism. Furthermore, we intend to show that although there are many gaps in this area, some hotels have already taken significant steps in this direction, and the legislation itself, despite not yet being very consistent in this matter, defends the right to equality. In order to achieve these goals, we intend, in particular, to check if hotels in the Region of Leiria, Portugal, are prepared to receive and to serve people with special needs, by conducting 13 interviews with hotel owners/directors and 12 surveys for hotel receptionists. Also, to understand if there is any discrepancy between the perception of satisfaction of these guests by hotel owners/directors and receptionists, who are the people who usually have the most contact with them. After processing the data, we have obtained the following main results: the hotel industry in the Leiria region is not prepared yet to receive guests with specials needs properly; there is not a significant gap between the opinion of management and hotel employees regarding their own service in this segment; the majority of hotel do not provide receptionist training for people with special needs; the training positively influences the quality of the service provided and consequently the satisfaction of the guests. Finally, critical reflections on the subject were presented, discussing the implications and limitations of this study, as well as indications for possible future investigations.

Mason, Courtney Wade. "All of Our Secrets are in These Mountains: Problematizing Colonial Power Relations, Tourism Productions and Histories of the Cultural Practices of Nakoda Peoples in the Banff-Bow Valley." Phd thesis, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10048/1581.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examines some of the significant challenges that Nakoda peoples encountered from 1870-1980 in the Banff-Bow Valley, Alberta. Beginning with missionary movements, the 1877 Treaty Seven agreements and the establishment of the reservation systems, I trace the emergence of a disciplinary power regime and the subsequent consequences for Nakoda communities. Canadian governments and agents of the colonial bureaucracy manipulated time, space and movement which altered the structure of Aboriginal lives in ways that attempted to increase visibility, economic productivity and docility. Race as a normalizing and dividing practice (Foucault, 1975) is used to demonstrate how levels of discipline furthered assimilation strategies through the formation of Canadas first national park and the development of the regions tourism economies. As the preeminent example of the engagement of Nakoda peoples in local tourism industries, the Banff Indian Days sporting and cultural festivals, which were celebrated from 1894-1978, are also investigated. Borrowing from poststructural and postcolonial theory, the interactions between tourists, participants, organizers and performers are problematized. It is revealed that the festivals became critical sites of cultural exchange that engendered unique socio-economic, political and cultural opportunities. In addition, the Indian Days fostered important identity-making possibilities and crucial spaces to assert, contest, and produce perceptions of Aboriginal cultures. This research privileges information obtained from oral history interviews with Nakoda peoples. However, archival materials, mainly newspaper accounts, photographs, tourism advertisements, and government documents also contribute to the primary evidence collected. As well as analyzing racial discourse, this work also considers how Nakoda peoples responded to the representations and expectations that informed the production of Aboriginal identities. I conclude this study by suggesting that it is crucial for researchers to consult diverse Aboriginal perspectives and collaborate with the communities within which they work. This research offers new understandings of the cultural histories of the Banff-Bow Valley which reflect the dynamic and complex nature of colonial power relations.
