ABSTRACT The first Van de Graaff particle accelerator in Latin America was installed at the Universidad Nacional Autóónoma de Mééxico (UNAM) in 1952. This event marked the beginning of experimental nuclear physics, exclusively for peaceful purposes, in Mexico. The acquisition of this accelerator was fundamental for placing other accelerators into operation, which were used for both research and the resolution of national problems.

Abstract:
This article examines how some Catholic women, through their participation in an Acción Católica campaign, protested what they believed was the immoral nature of an expanding consumer culture: the movies, magazines, fashions, and comic books that inundated Mexico—particularly Mexico City—in the 1950s. Through this campaign, these women sought to construct an ideal form of Catholic womanhood that was both modern and moral—one that embraced modesty and sexual purity as a way for Mexico to modernize and progress. While the campaign had its roots in papal directives and was part of transnational discourses about morality, the Mexican women who participated saw their actions, nevertheless, in nationalistic terms. A modern Mexico, they argued, needed to have a strong moral base in order to be economically and politically successful; thus the morality they espoused centered on constraining women’s sexual expression.

The 1994 New Year's celebration in Mexico started with a bang. A mere hour into the year, the Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional (EZLN or Zapatista National Liberation Army) assaulted and captured four cities in the Los Altos region of Chiapas, Mexico's southernmost state. The Ejército Zapatista de Liberacion Nacional shocked the Mexican people and most of the world. Although Mexican political and military leaders denied that they were caught off guard, they were, in fact, totally surprised by the magnitude of the attack. As events unfolded, the reasons behind the seizure of San Cristóbal de las Casas, Las Margaritas, Altamirano, and Ocosingo became increasingly apparent. The Zapatistas called for a nationwide movement for “jobs, land, housing, food, health, independence, freedom, democracy, justice and peace.”

Abstract:
Data derived from the Encuesta Nacional de Fecundidad y Salud (ENFES) confirm that overall levels of infant mortality in Mexico have been steadily declining. However, a more specific analysis furnishes evidence that this decline has occurred at varying rates within different social groups, reflecting an increase. in social inequalities. The analytical strategy used in this article leads to three basic conclusions: (1) the impact of the economic crisis on infant mortality is reflected not in a reversal of the declining trend but an increase. in social inequalities; (2) certain variables universally accepted as determinants of infant mortality, such as mother's education, seem nonsignificant for some social sectors; and (3) certain biodemographic characteristics assumed to have a uniform mortality-related behavior vary among sectors, suggesting that even these constants are determined by social factors.

AbstractDuring the 1970s, excavations at El Zapotal revealed a Late Classic period ossuary with multiple burials, sumptuous funerary offerings, and life-sized terracotta sculpture individually on a par with the Chinese national treasures from Xi'an. Less known are murals adorning a U-shaped banquette centering on the monumental clay sculpture of a skeletal Death God.Wyllie, through the assistance of Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia, Veracruz, produced drawings of the now deteriorating paintings. The murals form part of a larger narrative program integrating sculpture, architectural elements, burial offerings, and human osteological remains connected with Mesoamerican underworld stories of creation.

Abstract:
The battles that peasants waged during the Mexican Revolution translated into a series of agrarian and agricultural institutions, and one of these was the Banco Nacional de Crédito Ejidal, created in 1926. Histories deeply engrained in both the popular imagination of Mexico and scholarly historiography have offered a generic classic narrative of ejidal credit, beginning with Lázaro Cárdenas. He and his cabinet sought to transform theejidointo the engine of agricultural growth for the nation and carried out a sweeping and (in qualified ways) successful land reform, thereby bringing the revolution to the fullest fruition many Mexicans would ever know. It is assumed that ejidal credit peaked during Cárdenas's administration in two major ways: first, it was in this period that ejidal credit societies received the most loans from the Banco Nacional del Crédito Ejidal, and second, it was during the same period that the bank clearly and unanimously embraced social reform goals over orthodox banking goals.

Abstract The SISMOMex project represents more than 110 yr of seismological information from Mexico. Its objective is the preservation, search, recovery, systematization, reuse, and dissemination of data and information from the seismograms generated by the Servicio Sismológico Nacional (SSN, National Seismological Service of Mexico) and published material about earthquakes and seismology in Mexico. SISMOMex is the combination of resources in any format (print, electronic, multimedia, and so on) and their corresponding registry in a database and an institutional repository. The database and the repository have an interface for an online search, allowing access to open-access materials, through a link to the electronic resources generated or acquired. The project seeks to preserve for the future all the products generated by the SSN since the beginning of its operations, and organize the “National Seismogram Library” (Sismoteca Nacional en Línea), which is the physical place that stores the seismograms generated by the SSN. Similarly, it allows, under citation, the reuse of the data by interested researchers and students. These seismograms contain unique and unreproducible information. With the project presented here, support is provided mainly to the scientific community, by directing the search of historical and present data and information on the seismic activity of Mexico to a single place.

Abstract:
Introduction. Envenomation caused by snakebites is a health issue, globally unattended. Like in other countries, this situation is severe in Mexico. Even though Dirección General de Epidemiología de la Secretaría de Salud reports the annual number of cases, it is necessary to analyze in-depth such data to identify these events’ geographical distribution. Objective. This research aims to analyze the new cases and the incidence of the snakebites reported during 2017-2019 to identify the country’s most vulnerable states. Material and Methods. This research is based on the collection and detailed comparison of the smakesbites data taken from Sistema Nacional de Vigilancia Epidemiológica between 2017 and 2019. Results. In 2017, 3,712 new cases were reported; 3,882 in 2018, and 4,095 with an incidence of 3.235 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. Conclusions. Snakebite epidemiological surveillance requires more data (like the type and place of attention) and must derive in formulating dynamic plans to take care of the most vulnerable regions.

Abstract:
The Mexican collection at Lund’s Museum of Sketches in is an unusual and valuable collection both from a Mexican and from an international perspective: the collection was built by Gunnar Bråhammar in the late 1960s, and counts works by David Alfaro Siqueiros, Diego Rivera, José Clemente Orozco and Juan O’Gorman but also Francisco Eppens, Rufino Tamayo, González Camarena, Raul Angiano, Leopoldo Méndez and Desiderio Xochitiotzin. Abstract:
How is it possible to understand a specific cultural determination of human praxis, especially the productive and consumptive one, without falling into ethnologising human subjects in their everyday forms of reproduction, or constructing biological fixations? The former senior faculty of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) Bolívar Echeverría (Riobamba, Ecuador 1941 – Mexico City 2010), who does not limit human culture to its ‘elevated’ forms and bases his analysis in the precise manner of material reproduction, finds an adequate image of this relationship between freedom and tradition, between individuality and a historically- and geographically-determined collectivity. This image lies in human languages, their innumerable speech acts and in a science that studies the relation of interdependence among them: semiology.

Abstract:
This article is addendum to the revision “Cryptini de México” (Kasparyan & Ruíz Cancino, 2005, 2008a). New data on ichneumon flies of the tribe Cryptini are given mainly on material from “Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México” collected in 2007–2009. Five new species, Debilos nigriceps sp. nov., Diapetimorpha zaldivari sp. nov., Lymeon albifemur sp. nov., L. clebschi sp. nov. and Whymperia oaxaca sp. nov., are described from Oaxaca State in southern Mexico. Acerastes tarsoleucus (Cameron, 1886) is recorded from Mexico for the first time, and female of this species is described for the first time. First representative of the Neotropical genus Debilos Townes, 1966 is described in Mexican fauna. New data on distribution in Mexico of some cryptine species are given.
