Abstract:
Contemporary educational practices have been calling for pedagogical models that foreground flexibility, agency, ubiquity, and connectedness in learning. These models have, in turn, been stimulating redevelopments of educational infrastructure –with physical contours reconfigured into novel complex learning spaces at universities, schools, museums, and libraries. Understanding the complexity of these innovative learning spaces requires an acknowledgement of the material and digital as interconnected. A ‘physical’ learning space is likely to involve a range of technologies and in addition to paying attention to these ‘technologies’ one must understand and account for their physical sites of use as well. This paper discusses the influence of materiality in learning, using an analytical approach that situates learning activity as an emergent process. Drawing on theories that foreground socio-materiality in learning and on the relational perspective offered by networked learning, we call for a deeper understanding of the interplay between the physical (material and digital), conceptual, and social aspects of learning, and their combined influence on emergent activity. The paper argues that in order to successfully design for innovative learning, educators need to develop their capacity to trace the intricate connections between people, ideas, digital and material tools, and tasks –to see the learning-whole in action.

En el presente trabajo se comenta un fallo judicial en el cual se analiza la admisión y procedencia de una particular medida cautelar anticipatoria de tutela -medida innovativa- en el marco de una acción constitucional de amparo de salud. La acción fue instaurada a fin de garantizar la provisión de un medicamento tendiente a menguar los efectos de una enfermedad sanguínea poco frecuente. The present paper comments on a judicial ruling in which the admission of a particular anticipatory precautionary measure of protection is analyzed in the legal framework of a constitutional action of health protection. The action was instituted in order to guarantee the provision of a drug tending to diminish the effects of rare blood disease.

Resumen: El trabajo analiza los pactos de integridad como concepto en construcción –no existe ningún trabajo científico sobre el particular– dentro de la lógica conceptual y teórica de la acción colectiva y, en particular, la aplicación de esta a la “gestión de la integridad” de los procesos de contratación pública (transparencia, rendición de cuentas). Abstract:
This study describes the concepts, historical precedents, language and fundamental experiences of artivism. It shows the research activities from two main universities (Complutense de Madrid in Spain and Nottingham Trent in UK) as well as other cultural institutions (Élan Interculturel from France and Artemiszio from Hungary), which have explored the educational potential of artivism as a new way of achieving social engagement using innovation and artistic creation. The paper defines precisely artivism as a new language which appears outside the museums and art academies, moving towards urban and social spaces. Artivism is a hybrid form of art and activism which has a semantic mechanism to use art as a means towards change and social transformation. The analysis collects some central experiences of the artivist phenomenon and applies semantic analysis, archiving artivist experiences, and using urban walks and situational research, analyses the educational and formative potential of artivists and their ability to break the classroom walls, and to remove the traditional roles of creator and receptor, student and professor, through workshop experiences. Finally, it reflects upon the usefulness of artivism as a new social language and an educational tool that breaks the traditional roles of social communication. Este estudio describe los conceptos, antecedentes, lenguaje y experiencias fundamentales del artivismo, a partir de las actividades de estudio en la Universidad de Nottingham Trent y en la Universidad Complutense de Madrid, con la colaboración de otras entidades culturales como la francesa Élan Interculturel (Francia) y Artemiszio (Hungría), explorando la capacidad educativa de nuevas formas de compromiso social mediante la innovación y creación artística. El artículo acota y define el artivismo como un nuevo lenguaje que surge del desborde de la creación artística académica y museística, hacia los espacios y lugares sociales. El artivismo, hibridación del arte y del activismo, tiene un mecanismo semántico en el que se utiliza el arte como vía para comunicar una energía hacia el cambio y la transformación. El análisis recoge algunas de las principales experiencias en artivismo mediante diversas técnicas –estudio de ejemplos de artivismo mediante análisis semántico, realización de archivo de fenómenos artivistas siguiendo metodologías de paseos urbanos e investigación situacional, y estudio de la capacidad didáctica y formativa de los artivistas y sus trabajos por su facilidad para romper los muros de las aulas e invertir los roles de creador y espectador, alumno y profesor, mediante experiencias en talleres– para de esta manera reflexionar finalmente sobre la utilidad del artivismo como nuevo lenguaje social y como herramienta educativa, capaz de romper los roles tradicionales de la comunicación social.

Abstract:
This paper describes research concerning the creation of a novel sheet glass forming system based on the Reconfigurable Pin Tooling (RPT) principle. The paper will initially outline some of the theoretical and technical background for the research. These contexts particularly concern tools and innovation environments as well as a brief overview of the history of the RPT concept. A description of the development of the tooling systems through practice-based research is then provided followed by coverage of creative explorations with this new glass-forming method. Based on the results of the research, the author argues that digital fabrication technologies can provide the key toolsets for individual creative practitioners to successfully innovate through their own toolmaking projects. This argument is evidenced by artefacts (glass bowls) produced by the author using the RPT systems developed during the research; these glass bowls have been widely exhibited and received both critical as well as commercial acclaim. The article concludes with observations from this research and reflections on the findings.

Este artículo presenta una breve aproximación al desarrollo de procesos de innovación dirigidos y aplicados en pequeños y medianos productores rurales (PMPR), enfatizando en los elementos que afectan la generación, apropiación y uso de las innovaciones, teniendo en consideración la forma en que llega y se desarrolla el proceso innovativo, como los espacios con que cuentan para la socialización y generación de conocimientos que soportan el desarrollo de las mismas. El análisis se realiza, considerando los procesos de innovación como aspectos medulares para alcanzar desarrollo. Transitando desde un enfoque central de políticas, hasta el elemento territorial de acción, en un ir y venir de aproximaciones, confirmaciones y apropiaciones, donde el conocimiento, sus espacios, sus vínculos y relaciones constituyen el tejido que soporta, mantiene e impulsa a los participantes a enfrentar y alcanzar nuevos retos. Con esa idea se analiza el quehacer innovativo, centrado en un sector productivo y en dos territorios rurales, tratando de revelar como ha sido la inducción y que resultados se ha alcanzado hasta el momento.

Abstract:
The article is written in the intersection of the fields of regional development and action research, which use different languages when referring to development. The first revolves around innovation revenues, market shares and competitiveness while the second focuses on emancipation, democratisation and empowerment. Based on an experience in Gipuzkoa, Basque Country (Spain), the case used in this paper tells us how a regional government, the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa and eleven county development agencies are collaborating in order to avoid small firms falling behind in digitalisation processes. The main argument is that action research can help construct collaborative governance modes which, as well as helping specific firms become competitive, empower territorial actors as a collective subject that decides on its own future.

Abstract:
Lo scopo della presente ricerca è valutare l’idoneità dell’acciaio da utensili innovativo K890, prodotto da Böhler con metallurgia delle polveri, ad essere impiegato per la realizzazione di componenti motore di moto da corsa, quali alberi a camme e a gomiti, in sostituzione dell’acciaio da nitrurazione GKHW, prodotto da Aubert&Duval con processo ESR (Electro Slag Remelting). Lo studio è stato condotto a valle di una precedente sperimentazione condotta su provini non intagliati ed ha previsto l'esecuzione di prove di trazione e prove di fatica a flessione rotante con intaglio oltre a prove di durezza ed analisi microstrutturali e frattografiche. Sono stati testati due lotti di acciaio K890, aventi durezza di 752 e 821 HV rispettivamente. Durante i test di fatica il lotto in K890 a durezza maggiore ha mostrato un limite di fatica con intaglio superiore al GKHW nitrurato. I risultati ottenuti sui due lotti di K890 sono stati impiegati per valutare l’applicabilità di relazioni empiriche per la stima del coefficiente di concentrazione a fatica delle tensioni ad acciai ultra-alto resistenziali. E’ emerso che le relazioni più tradizionali sovrastimano l’effetto dell’intaglio per questa tipologia di acciaio. A conclusione dello studio, considerando l'esito delle stesse prove condotte sull'acciaio GKHW nitrurato attualmente in uso, si può affermare che l'acciaio K890 è un possibile candidato per la produzione di alberi in ambito racing. La disamina dei risultati sperimentali è preceduta da tre capitoli incentrati su un inquadramento teorico, derivanti da ricerche bibliografiche: il primo riporta un’introduzione al funzionamento ed alle caratteristiche degli alberi a camme e a gomiti; il secondo è relativo alle proprietà degli acciai da utensili tradizionali ed innovativi; infine il terzo riguarda una trattazione sul danneggiamento da fatica, con particolare riguardo all’effetto dell’intaglio ed alle caratteristiche del fenomeno negli acciai ultra-alto resistenziali.

Abstract:
Lo scopo del presente elaborato è valutare un eventuale effetto benefico della pallinatura sulla resistenza a fatica di due acciai prodotti per metallurgia delle polveri: il K890, prodotto da Böhler e l’ASP2005, prodotto da Erasteel. Quest’attività si inserisce in un progetto volto a valutare l’idoneità di tali acciai innovativi ad essere impiegati per la realizzazione di componenti motore di moto da corsa, quali alberi a camme, in sostituzione dell’acciaio da nitrurazione GKHW, prodotto da Aubert&Duval con processo ESR (Electro slag remelting). Lo studio è stato svolto a valle di una sperimentazione condotta su provini intagliati degli stessi acciai e ha previsto: prove di fatica a flessione rotante, prove di trazione, prove di durezza, misura di tensioni residue, analisi microstrutturali e frattografiche. Sono stati testati provini in ASP2005, con durezza pari a 869 HV e in K890 di due diverse durezze, pari a 752 e 821 HV, tutti intagliati e pallinati. Entrambi i materiali hanno mostrato un effetto benefico della pallinatura sul comportamento a fatica; i risultati ottenuti sono stati impiegati al fine di valutare l’applicabilità di relazioni empiriche per la stima del coefficiente di concentrazione a fatica delle tensioni e della sensibilità all’intaglio di acciai ultra-alto resistenziali. È stato dimostrato che le relazioni tradizionali sovrastimano l’effetto dannoso dell’intaglio per questo tipo di acciaio nella condizione pallinata. È stato, inoltre, condotto uno studio per la modellazione del comportamento a fatica di provini intagliati con un coefficiente di concentrazioni delle tensione Kt=3 e in un secondo momento si è tentato di estendere il modello anche a provini con un Kt compreso fra 1 e 3. Queste analisi sperimentali sono precedute da un inquadramento generale delle funzioni e dei requisiti di un albero di distribuzione in ambito racing e da una trattazione circa i meccanismi di rottura per fatica in acciai ultra-alto resistenziali.

Es por ello que la investigación se ha situado, particularmente, en la perspectiva de la investigación-acción colaborativa, en la que han participado los profesores colaboradores de manera activa en una serie de acciones promotoras de cambios en sus ámbitos de actuación y de acuerdo con sus necesidades, para interpretar las implicaciones de esos cambios en su desarrollo y valorar las transformaciones que se iban dando dentro del proceso.

Abstract:
La finalitat d'aquesta tesi és el desenvolupament d'estratègies de pensament crític i processos d'apoderament de l'estudiantat universitari per a la detecció de necessitats del context en la fase inicial dels projectes d'Aprenentatge Servei (ApS). En aquest sentit, l'objectiu principal és dissenyar i validar el qüestionari per a la detecció de necessitats Passeig a la deriva (*DNPD), en la fase inicial de diagnòstic del context a través de la participació de l'estudiantat universitari. Tot això, partint d'una visió crítica i transformadora, amb la intenció de situar al discent en el centre de l'experiència d'Aprenentatge Servei des del moment zero en la fase inicial de les experiències ApS. Tanmateix, es parteix de les possibilitats socio-pedagògiques del pensament crític (PC) i del lideratge transformatiu com a ingredients principals per a l'apoderament de l'estudiantat. Això, ha de guiar el procés de detecció de necessitats per a l'observació i diagnòstic del context. I ho farà, a través de les diferents dimensions del qüestionari Passeig a la Deriva (DNPD): participació, autogestió, aprenentatge significatiu, abast i millora, pensament crític i qualitat. La validesa d'aquest instrument té dos components clau: a) la validesa de contingut, realitzada a través de l'aplicació a una mostra de 262 estudiants universitaris i b) la validesa de constructe, a través de l'anàlisi crítica de 80 persones jutges expertes. El qüestionari en la seva versió final s'ha aplicat a una mostra de 80 estudiants universitaris. La validesa última i definitiva s'ha realitzat a través de l'anàlisi factorial confirmatòria per a l'estudi de l'estabilitat i la fiabilitat de l'instrument, corresponent al camp de l'estadística multivariant. Per tant, la metodologia de recerca és un continu procés d'exploració de caràcter principalment quantitatiu. En aquest sentit, s'espera que la seva aplicació futura pugui contribuir al desenvolupament d'estratègies de pensament crític i processos d'apoderament de l'estudiantat universitari, així com a l'orientació en la fase inicial de detecció de necessitats per a la millora i qualitat dels projectes d'Aprenentatge Servei.

La validez de este instrumento tiene dos componentes clave: a) la validez de contenido, realizada a través de la aplicación a una muestra de 262 estudiantes universitarios y b) la validez de constructo, a través del análisis crítico de 80 personas jueces expertas. El cuestionario en su versión final se ha aplicado a una muestra de 80 estudiantes universitarios. La validez última y definitiva se ha realizado a través del análisis factorial confirmatorio para el estudio de la estabilidad y la fiabilidad del instrumento, correspondiente al campo de la estadística multivariante. Por tanto, la metodología de investigación es un continuo proceso de exploración de carácter principalmente cuantitativo. En este sentido, se espera que su aplicación futura pueda contribuir al desarrollo de estrategias de pensamiento crítico y procesos de empoderamiento del estudiantado universitario, así como a la orientación en la fase inicial de detección de necesidades para la mejora y calidad de los proyectos de Aprendizaje-Servicio.
The purpose of this thesis is the development of critical thinking strategies and empowerment processes of university students for the detection of context needs in the initial phase of Service-Learning projects (SL). In this sense, the main objective is to design and validate the questionnaire for the needs detection of Walk to Drift (DNPD), in the initial phase of diagnosis of the environment through the participation of the university students. All of this is based on a critical and transformative vision, with the intention of placing the students at the center of the Service-Learning experience from the zero moment in the initial phase of the Service-Learning experiences. To this end, it starts out from the socio-pedagogical possibilities of critical thinking and transformative leadership as main ingredients for the empowerment of students. This has to guide the process of detecting needs for the observation and diagnosis of the context. It will do this through the different dimensions of the Walk to Drift questionnaire (DNPD): participation, self-management, meaningful learning, outreach and improvement, critical thinking and quality. The validity of this instrument has two key components: a) the validity of content, made through the application to a sample of 262 university students, and b) the validity of construct, through the critical analysis of 80 expert judges. The final version of the questionnaire has been applied to a sample of 80 university students. The final and definitive validity has been made through confirmatory factorial analysis for the study of the stability and reliability of the instrument, corresponding to the field of multivariate statistics. Therefore, the research methodology is a continuous process of exploration of a primarily quantitative nature. In this sense, it is expected that its future application may contribute to the development of critical thinking strategies and the empowerment processes of university students, as well as to the orientation in the initial phase of needs detection for the improvement and quality of service-learning projects.

A presente pesquisa teve por objetivos: compreender, quanto à fundamentação teóricofilosófica e organizativa, como os Documentos do MS tratam a pesquisa em saúde no Brasil; delinear, a partir da fundamentação teórico-filosófica e organizativa, presente no conjunto de documentos oficiais do MS que trata da pesquisa para a saúde no Brasil, uma Rede Ecossistêmica de Pesquisa em Enfermagem/Saúde nos HUs Federais, para auxiliar na consolidação do SUS. Traçou-se a seguinte TESE: É possível delinear, a partir da fundamentação teórico-filosófica e organizativa, presente no conjunto de documentos oficiais do MS que trata da pesquisa para a saúde no Brasil, uma Rede Ecossistêmica de Pesquisa em Enfermagem/Saúde nos HUs Federais, para auxiliar na consolidação do SUS. Para sustentar a referida tese, procurou-se, no referencial contextual e teórico, os temas: Sistema Único de Saúde – SUS; Hospitais Universitários Federais na perspectiva ecossistêmica; Pensamento Sistêmico, numa Abordagem Ecossistêmica; Interfaces da Pesquisa Ecossistêmica nos HUs Federais e a Pesquisa Ecossistêmica em rede na enfermagem/saúde. Ele mostrou-se coerente, consistente e ancorador em relação à análise e à interpretação dos dados e permitiu aprofundar o conhecimento sobre a temática. O caminho metodológico caracterizou-se como exploratório, descritivo, com abordagem qualitativa. Para capturar os dados, utilizou-se um instrumento de pesquisa documental, estruturado em três pilares básicos, que contemplaram os aspectos capazes de abranger o escopo da proposta. Contemplando objetivo, questão de pesquisa e tese foram desenvolvidos, com base nos dados capturados, três artigos: SUS e a Pesquisa Ecossistêmica em Enfermagem/Saúde: estratégia de inovação na produção de ciência, tecnologia e assistência em saúde; Rede Ecossistêmica de Pesquisa em Enfermagem/Saúde nos HUs Federais e Rede Ecossistêmica de Pesquisa em Enfermagem/Saúde nos Hospitais Universitários Federais: uma possibilidade para a Pesquisa em Enfermagem/Saúde. Os resultados do primeiro artigo mostraram que, ao promover a Pesquisa Ecossistêmica em Enfermagem/Saúde nos HUs Federais, existem possibilidades de produzir inovação no pensar e fazer e, assim, alcançar resultados mais positivos na assistência, induzindo à sustentabilidade ao Sistema. O segundo enfatiza que as ações de pensar e fazer, balizadas pelo princípio sistêmico integrador, expresso em rede, podem aumentar as interfaces entre pesquisadores de diversas áreas investigativas e suas concepções metodológicas e, assim, alavancar ciência e tecnologia e capacitação científica ao trabalhador de enfermagem/saúde e inserir ganho na prestação da assistência/saúde. O terceiro demonstra que, por meio de um modelo mental ancorado em referencial ecossistêmico, é possível delinear uma Rede Ecossistêmica de Pesquisa em Enfermagem/Saúde em HUs Federais. Considera-se que o SUS necessita ser constantemente repensado, a fim de buscar e obter soluções pertinentes; precisa inovar, evoluir, especialmente na pesquisa, e promover qualidade no ensino, na assistência à saúde e no ambiente, até mesmo, para a sua própria manutenção como sistema de saúde.
The objective of this research was to outline an Ecosystemic Net of Research in Nursing/Health in Federal University Hospitals in order to help consolidate the Integrated Healthcare System, based on the theoretical-philosophical and organizational basis which is found in official documents issued by the Ministry of Health about research in health in Brazil. The following THESIS was analyzed: In order to help the consolidation of the Integrated Healthcare System, it is possible to outline an Ecosystemic Net of Research in Nursing/Health in Federal University Hospitals, based on the theoretical-philosophical and organizational basis which is found in official documents issued by the Ministry of Health about research in health in Brazil. In order to support this thesis, the theoretical section of this study involved these themes: the Integrated Healthcare System, Ecosystemic Research in the Integrated Healthcare System and Federal University Hospitals from the perspective of Ecosystemic Research. It was coherent, consistent and primordial regarding the analysis and the interpretation of data and enabled to deepen knowledge of the theme. The methodology was characterized as exploratory and descriptive in a qualitative approach. In order to collect data, a specially designed documentary research tool was used; its structure has three basic pillars which comprised the fundamental aspects and some secondary ones that were able to embrace the whole scope of the proposal. Regarding the objective, the question and the thesis, three papers, based on the data collected in the official documents issued by the Ministry of Health, were written: “The Integrated Healthcare System and Ecosystemic Research in Nursing/Health: an innovation strategy in the production of science, technology and healthcare”; “An Ecosystemic Net of Research in Nursing/Health in Federal University Hospitals”; and “ An Ecosystemic Net of Research in Nursing/Health in Federal University Hospitals: a possibility of research in Nursing/Health”. The results of the first paper showed that, when Ecosystemic Research in Nursing/Health is promoted in Federal University Hospitals, it is possible to bring innovation to thoughts and actions which aim at getting more positive results in healthcare and to make the Integrated Healthcare System more sustainable. The second paper highlights that actions and thoughts that are mediated by an integrative systemic principle, expressed in a net, may strengthen the interfaces among researchers from different areas and their methodological conceptions. Consequently, science and technology will be enhanced, workers in Nursing/health will get more scientific knowledge and healthcare will be considerably enriched. The third one shows that, based on a mental model attached to ecosystemic references, an Ecosystemic Net of Research in Nursing/Health may be outlined in Federal University Hospitals. The Integrated Healthcare System needs to be constantly reviewed so that it may look for and find adequate solutions, innovate, evolve - mainly in research - and improve the quality of teaching, of healthcare and of the environment in order to be maintained as an integrated healthcare system.
La presente investigación tuvo los seguientes objetivos: comprehender, cuanto la fundamentación teórica-filosófica y organizativa, como los documentos del MS tratan la investigación en salud en Brasil; delinear, partiendo de la fundamentación teórico-filosóficas y organizativa, presente en el conjunto de documentos oficiales del MS que trata de la investigación para la salud en Brasil, una Red Ecosistémica de Investigación en Enfermería/Salud en los HUs federales para la consolidación del SUS. Fue elaborada la siguiente TESIS: Es posible delinear, partiendo de la fundamentación teórico-filosófica y organizativa, presente en el actual conjunto de los documentos oficiales del MS que proviene de la Investigación de la Salud en el Brasil, una Red Ecosistémica de Investigación de Enfermería / Salud en los HUs Federal, para ayudar a la consolidación del SUS. Para sostener la referida tesis, fue buscado en el referencial contextual y teórico, los temas: Sistema Unificado de Salud – SUS; Hospitales Universitarios Federales en el enfoque ecosistémico; Pensamiento sistémico, un enfoque ecosistémico; Interfaces de Investigación de Ecosistémica en los HUs Federales y la Investigación Ecosistémica en red en la enfermería/salud. Él resultó ser coherente, consistente y anclado en relación al análisis y la interpretación de datos y permitió profundizar conocimientos sobre el tema. El enfoque metodológico es caracterizado como exploratorio, descriptivo, con enfoque cualitativo. Para capturar los datos, se utilizó la herramienta de investigación documental, estructurado en tres pilares básicos, que contemplan aspectos capaces de cubrir el alcance de la propuesta. Contemplando objetivo, la cuestión de investigación y tesis han desarrollado, sobre la base de los datos capturados, tres artículos: SUS y la Investigación Ecosistémica en Enfermería/Salud: Estrategia la innovación en la producción de ciencia, tecnología y cuidados de salud; Red Ecosistémica de Investigación en Enfermería /Salud en los Hospitales Federales y Red Ecosistémica de Investigación en Enfermería/Salud en los Hospitales Universitarios Federales: una oportunidad para la Investigación Enfermería/Salud. Los resultados del primer artículo mostraron que, mediante la promoción de la investigación ecosistémica de Enfermería / Salud en los HUs Federales, existe la posibilidad para producir la innovación en el pensamiento y la acción y así lograr resultados más positivos en la asistencia, induciendo la sostenibilidad del Sistema. El segundo enfatiza las acciones de pensar y hacer, impulsado por el principio sistémico integrador, expresado en red, pueden aumentar las interfaces entre los investigadores de diferentes áreas de investigación y sus puntos de vista metodológico y por lo tanto, dar importancia a la ciencia, la tecnología y la formación científica del trabajador de la Enfermería/Salud y inserir puntos positivos a la prestación de atención/salud. El tercero muestra que a través de un modelo mental anclado en un referencial ecosistémico, es posible delinear una Red Ecosistémica de Investigación en Enfermería/Salud en HUs Federales. Se considera que el SUS tiene que ser constantemente repensado a fin de solicitar y obtener las soluciones adecuadas; para innovar, desarrollar, especialmente en la investigación y promover la calidad en la enseñanza, en la asistencia a la salud y el ambiente, incluso para su propio mantenimiento como sistema de salud.

Awards are most popular in the arts and media (e.g. the Oscars), in sports, in religion, in the voluntary and humanitarian sector, in academia (e.g. honorary doctorates), and also in business (e.g. Manager of the Year). One of the most cherished awards is the Nobel Prize, given for peace, literature, and various sciences. Inducement prizes have been successful to spark innovation. They promise a monetary sum and public acclaim to that person or group of persons finding a solution to a well-specified problem. There are also ironic prizes (such as the Golden Raspberry Awards or the Goat of West Point). The social sciences, including economics, have largely disregarded awards. The Economics of Award is only in its beginnings.

Owing to the highly competitive and volatile business environment, companies in the West African markets face significant challenges. This study was conducted to examine the challenges faced in the marketplace in Ghana by successful entrepreneurs. Accra was intentionally sampled for the analysis of four successful entrepreneurs from the Makola market. Findings revealed that access to finance, high competition, instability in macroeconomic indicators, poor management competences, lack of skilled labor and deficiencies in marketing strategies are the major factors confronting the survival of entrepreneurs in the marketplace. The results provide insights into the important and current challenges facing entrepreneurs in the informal sectors. Recommendations were made to help overcome the challenges faced by business people in their operations.

Noted complex adaptive system researcher John H. Holland now receives acclaim from many quarters, but it is important to understand that this man and his ideas have been controversial since the beginning of his career. Genetic algorithms (GAs) were ignored or disparaged throughout the 1960s and 1970s, and even now, as these and his other ideas receive worldwide recognition in broad outline, the specifics of his mode of thought and insight are rejected by many who claim to embrace his key insights. This is a mistake. I have known John Holland for 23 years, and I have learned many things from him, but a critical influence has been his style of thought, in particular, his style of modeling. John has an uncanny knack of getting to the heart of a matter through the construction of what I call little models. Sometimes these models are verbal, sometimes they are mathematical, but they almost always shed a great deal of light on some nagging question in the analysis and design of complex systems. In this chapter, I propose to briefly explore John Holland's style of little modeling, and better understand its nature, its essence, and why some of those who embrace the broad outlines of his teaching have been slow to embrace the details of his modeling and the style of his thought. The exploration begins by recalling my own first impressions of John Holland and his style of thought, impressions made 23 years ago in a classroom in Ann Arbor, Michigan. It continues with a case study in Holland-style facetwise model building in constructing a takeover time model. It continues by integrating the takeover time model with a model of innovation on dimensional grounds. Finally, the Hollandian mode of model building is placed on intellectual terra firma with an economic argument, suggesting that the costs of modeling or thought must be weighed in relation to the model's benefits in understanding or designing a complex system.

Joint industry-academia projects with regional industry have influenced creation of Florida’s First Coast Manufacturing Innovation Partnership (MIP). The development of MIP has the primary goals of project-centered innovations for technology transfer, training the regional workforce with relevance to industry, and sustainability of technology transfer through creation of high-technology jobs. The region known as Florida’s First Coast is one of the fastest growing in the nation and has received recent acclaim as a top location for new and emerging businesses and industries to relocate or expand. The importance of manufacturing to the economy is crucial. Every individual and industry depends on manufactured goods. This sector continues to account for 14% of US GDP and 11% of total US employment. One way to help expand the regional industrial base is to develop a shared resource support facility in the fields of manufacturing engineering and design. The first objective of MIP is to stimulate transformation of knowledge in design and manufacturing occurring in the academic domain to applied research and development in industry. This is accomplished with project-centered innovations developed using a shared manufacturing and design resource. The second objective of MIP is to develop partnerships with additional academic institutions with the common goal of producing students whose education satisfies the needs of the regional workforce with scientific and technological training with relevance to industry. This also includes a mentorship facet to attract and retain engineering students for the future. The third objective is to implement MIP for long-term sustainability of technology transfer and creation of high-technology jobs in the manufacturing engineering and design professions. Technology tools for innovation in advanced manufacturing, for example, robotics and automation, modular robotics, advanced manufacturing process development, manufacturing systems modeling, and simulation; and advanced design, for example, computer aided engineering including finite element modeling, design analysis, and rapid prototyping are used in support of projects in partnership with regional industrial companies. Joint industry-academic projects require the integration of research and the technical need of the partnering company. A critical level of innovation is accomplished with the outcomes of projects while providing a distinguishing educational background for the engineering graduates. Several partnership projects have been initiated under the auspices of MIP. These projects with local industry are outlined and serve as a platform for new and emerging projects for joint mutually beneficial collaboration between industry and academia.

The increasing advance of the new technologies applied in the retail market, make it common to sell products without the personal contact between seller and buyer, being the registration and payment of the products made in electronic equipment of self-checkout. The large-scale use of these devices forces the consumer to participate in the service process, which was previously done through interaction with the company's employees. The user of the self-checkout system thus performs all the steps of the purchase, from weighing the products, registering them and making the payment. This is seen as a partial employee, whose participation or performance in providing services can be used by the company to improve the quality of its operations (KELLEY, et al 1993). However this participation does not always satisfy the user, and may cause negative experiences related to usability failures. This article presents the results of the evaluation by the users of the self-checkout system. The data were collected in Portugal through a questionnaire to 400 users. The study analyzes the degree of satisfaction regarding the quality and usability of the system, the degree of motivation for its adoption, as well as the profile of the users. Analysis of the sample data reveals that users have basic or higher education and use new technologies very often. They also have a high domain of the system and an easy learning of its use. The reason for using self-checkout instead of the traditional checkout is mainly due to "queues at checkout with operator" and "at the small volume of products". In general, the sample reveals a high degree of satisfaction with the service and with quality, however, in comparative terms, self-checkout is not considered better than operator checkout. The evaluation of the interaction with the self-checkout was classified according to twenty-six attributes of the system. The analysis identifies five groups with similar characteristics, of which two have low scores. "Cancellation of registered articles", "search for articles without a bar code", "manual registration", "bagging area", "error messages", "weight sensor" and “invoice request "are seven critical attributes of the system. The results indicate that the usability analysis oriented to the self-checkout service can be determinant for the user-system interaction.
