Abstract:
Wood product manufacturing involves many dangerous activities and a high incidence of work-related accidents. The objective of this study was to analyze registered and unregistered work accidents, as well as the most frequent type and rate increase over the years for different activities of wood product manufacture in Brazil. Total accidents were counted including both unregistered and registered accidents. The accidents were classified as either a typical accident, a commuting accident or occupational diseases. Evaluated production was subdivided into sawmill operations, manufacture of laminated wood and plywood, wood-derived pressed and agglomerated sheets, and furniture with a predominance of wood. Wood production presented 2,849,470 direct jobs. For the furniture manufacturing sub-sector, there was an increase in the growth rate for direct jobs. However, there was a greater number of total accidents and an increase in the rate of number of accidents over time. For sawmills and the manufacture of laminated wood and slabs, there was a decreasing trend in the rate of direct jobs and accidents. Of the total number of accidents, more than 20% were not reported. The primary accident incidence was the typical accident (88.3%), followed by commuting accidents (9.5%) and lastly occupational diseases (2.1%).

Abstract:
This article discusses occupational diseases and occupational accidents including disease diagnosis and prevention. Of the reported contact dermatitis, 90% are occupational diseases of the skin diseases associated with work. It is important to have a work history in identifying irritants that are occupational diseases that cause, make you sensitive or due to other factors, in controlling occupational diseases, one of the efforts that must be made is early detection, so that treatment can be given as quickly as possible. Thus, the disease can be recovered without causing disability. Occupational Diseases the patient experiences other exposures which are known to cause Occupational Diseases that cause illness. However, the presence of other causes cannot always be used to rule out causes in the workplace. At the very least, it will not cause further disability. Early detection should have caused work-related illnesses an integral part of occupational health. Many cases of hearing loss show the result of prolonged noise exposure, in some cases it is not due to work. The way to prevent illness at work is discipline and sufficient rest time.

Abstract:
Developments of countries are interpreted through many parameters. One of the most important parameters according to the order of importance is perhaps the occupational accidents. Especially in recent years, work related (or occupational) accidents occurred at different sectors did not decrease; they even increased despite the developments in the technology and emphasis made on the regulations. This situation can be interpreted as an open debate in which the employees still do not internalize the work they do. Often, enterprises do not choose the right personnel for the job or the personnel chosen are not oriented to the work with the through proper methods. When the mining sector is taken into account, this problem becomes even clearer. Among the many reasons for this problem, it can firstly be mentioned about the difficulty of employing qualified and well-educated personnel. Since the enterprises do not have many options in the solution of this problem, their approach to work accidents should be institutionally a highest priority. During this process they must also use proactive approaches. For example, all accidents and occupational diseases should be recorded, possible causes of them should be put forth, and statistical analysis should be conducted to guide the future of the institution. In this study, the work accidents took place in both underground and surface facilities at Western Lignite Corporation (WLC) which is one of the most important lignite producers in Turkey between the years 2014 and 2018 were analyzed by Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). The types of accidents were also examined and interpreted using the information obtained from the calculation of accident frequency, accident weight and accident probability rates. With the sensitivity analysis realized, it was tried to draw attention to the occupational safety measures to be made in the future.

Abstract:
Due to its dynamic nature, rapid technology change, uneducated employees, harsh working conditions, many work accidents, and heavy consequences of accidents, occupational health and safety (OHS) practices are essential in the construction industry. However, occupational Health and Safety measures in the construction industry come with additional costs. Therefore, employers who have to bear a cost to take OHS measures may consider OHS costs unnecessary without considering the costs they will bear after work accidents and occupational diseases. This research aims to estimate the optimal costs of OHS budgets to reduce the number of accidents with lost time injury and whether the carried costs for occupational health and safety in the construction industry impact the lost time injuries. Therefore, OHS costs in the construction industry are grouped into eight categories: fire, work equipment, electricity, health, personal protective equipment, general equipment, training and occupational health and safety service costs. This research is based on the standard unit costs set for the 8 OHS criteria required by the OHS laws, accident severity rates and actual unit costs that the projects have carried for five years for the construction of 15 buildings with 220.000 m2- 500.000 m2 indoor space which is located in Istanbul Turkey, started in 2013 and completed in 2017. Since the research was conducted before January 1, 2020, there is no requirement for an ethics committee permission document. According to the research results, as the costs of occupational health and safety services, fire and training increased, accident severity rates has decreased. However, the impact of other variables on accident severity rates was not statistically significant. Thus, construction enterprises that want to decrease the accident severity rates in their projects need to emphasise occupational health and safety services, fire, and training criteria.

Abstract:
In all countries of the world, as well as in Ukraine, occupational injuries are an urgent problem of modern society. The analysis of accidents at Ukrainian enterprises showed that there is a problem of developing modern methods of preventing injuries and occupational diseases prevention. The main objective of prevention of occupational diseases at enterprises in Ukraine is to create safe and healthy working conditions, and to preserve the health of workers. At each enterprise, the workers are constantly exposed to harmful and dangerous production factors. These factors negatively affect human health, which leads to a decrease in their ability to work. At the present time, there are accidents with fatal consequences on the Ukrainian factories, which indicates the unsatisfactory state of preventive work. The owner of an enterprise should objectively identify the real causes of an accident. This will provide a real opportunity for an effective search for ways to intensify preventive work and reduce injuries. Dangerous factors often lead to injuries, and harmful factors - to the disease. 80% of accidents at home and at work are observed for organizational reasons. In all countries of the world in the system of measures for the prevention of injuries, a significant role is devoted to the development and implementation of integrated approaches to labor safety. According to statistics from the International Labor Organization, more than 500 deaths in agriculture, industry and services are recorded worldwide every day. Annually more than 300 thousand workers receive occupational injuries and occupational diseases. Every three minutes, one worker dies as a result of an accident, and every four workers receive a work injury every second. Economic losses associated with occupational injuries around the world make up about 1% of the world's gross national product. One of the most traumatic industries is the agro-industrial complex, where mortal injuries are in percentage terms in crop production - 24% of the total number of injuries, livestock - 21%. The article presents the structure and frequency of the main forms of the diseases associated with the respiratory tract pathology in general in Ukraine, as well as diseases that arise under the influence of chemical factors, an analysis of occupational diseases at enterprises, depending on working conditions.

Abstract:
Background In most industrialized societies, regulations, inspections, insurance, and legal options are established to support workers who suffer injury, disease, or death in relation to their work; in practice, these resources are imperfect or even unavailable due to workplace or employer obstruction. Thus, limitations exist to identify unmet needs in occupational safety and health information. Objective The aim of this study was to explore hidden issues related to occupational accidents by examining social network services (SNS) data using topic modeling. Methods Based on the results of a Google search for the phrases occupational accident, industrial accident and occupational diseases, a total of 145 websites were selected. From among these websites, we collected 15,244 documents on queries related to occupational accidents between 2002 and 2018. To transform unstructured text into structure data, natural language processing of the Korean language was conducted. We performed the latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) as a topic model using a Python library. A time-series linear regression analysis was also conducted to identify yearly trends for the given documents. Results The results of the LDA model showed 14 topics with 3 themes: workers’ compensation benefits (Theme 1), illicit agreements with the employer (Theme 2), and fatal and non-fatal injuries and vulnerable workers (Theme 3). Theme 1 represented the largest cluster (52.2%) of the collected documents and included keywords related to workers’ compensation (ie, company, occupational injury, insurance, accident, approval, and compensation) and keywords describing specific compensation benefits such as medical expense benefits, temporary incapacity benefits, and disability benefits. In the yearly trend, Theme 1 gradually decreased; however, other themes showed an overall increasing pattern. Certain queries (ie, musculoskeletal system, critical care, and foreign workers) showed no significant variation in the number of queries. Conclusions We conducted LDA analysis of SNS data of occupational accident–related queries and discovered that the primary concerns of workers posting about occupational injuries and diseases were workers’ compensation benefits, fatal and non-fatal injuries, vulnerable workers, and illicit agreements with employers. While traditional systems focus mainly on quantitative monitoring of occupational accidents, qualitative aspects formulated by topic modeling from unstructured SNS queries may be valuable to address inequalities and improve occupational health and safety.

Abstract:
Accidents and occupational diseases; It causes loss of physical and mental health for employees and high amounts of income loss for employers and countries. In order to prevent all these losses from happening, technical and engineering measures are not enough and an internalized safety culture perception is required in management and employees. The common principle in order to protect it from accidents and diseases is to ensure that the employees act with safety awareness at every moment of the work, with the understanding of safety culture, which is defined as the set of values and rules, under the leadership of the management. Behavior and attitude patterns that do not change in a short time are shown as the main causes of accidents in business life. It is essential to create a culture that embraces safe behavior patterns and, as a result, a safe work environment created to prevent these accidents. In the implementation of this culture, the employees should be included in the process at every stage. In the study, a literature review on safety culture as a preventive factor in occupational accidents was carried out. As a result of the research, it was determined that the most appropriate method in the long-term in the prevention and reduction of accidents is the safety culture.

Abstract:
The scope of this study is to contribute to the improvement of Occupational Health Surveillance in the Unified Health System (UHS), through the recognition and inclusion of a third type of work-related accident in the current Brazilian legislation classification: the dual causation accident. This classification aims at facilitating the establishment of a causal connection, thus broadening the understanding of the relationship between work process and the production of diseases. It also aims at improving legal rules to protect the health of workers. This approach, besides enabling the identification of sentinel events (starting point of surveillance activities), might contribute not only to a decrease in underreporting of work-related accidents, but also to the uniformity of concepts and the implementation of integrated actions of the National Social Security Institute (NISS), the UHS, the Ministry of Labor (MLE) and the Judiciary for the protection of workers. To propose a third type of occupational accident, a study of occupational accidents and causes of underreporting was conducted, with reference to the Brazilian labor legislation in the context of the National Policy on Occupational Health and the UHS.

Abstract:
The annual increase in the number of occupational accidents and diseases in the Palestinian manufacturing industries confirms a serious problem that threatens the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) in such industries, with negative consequences in the society and economy. As the Palestinian OSH data are insufficient, tightwad, and with discrepancies in published data by different agencies, this study aimed to investigate the OSH status in the Palestinian manufacturing industries and determine the Palestinian OSH trends rates based on international practice in the EU and USA. Also, to shed light on the OSH situation in the manufacturing sector and warrant the inspection and monitoring of industries by the respective officials. The OSH data of 175 industrial establishments and 199 industrial employees was collected by meetings, interviews, and structured questionnaires for the period 2009–2016. The US and EU OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) formulas were used to calculate the OSH rates. The analysis showed that 32.30% of the industrial employees suffered from occupational injuries. The average injury rate was 7566 per 100,000 workers, indicating a low OSH level in the Palestinian manufacturing industries. The leather industry was found as the most dangerous in terms of OSH, with an average safety performance factor (SPF) of 145.6 off days/accident. Pearson’s chi-square test (χ2) revealed a correlation between occupational accidents and injuries and the employees’ commitment and lost working days. An OSH framework was developed based on safety and sustainable development pillars to assure effective enforcement of the OSH law and prevent future occupational accidents and diseases.

Abstract:
The article covers issues related to compulsory state social insurance, which is one of the mechanisms for ensuring health of employees in the course of their work. In his article the author states that accidents and occupational diseases are one of the biggest threats to the health of the working population of Ukraine. The author of the article emphasizes the need to reorient the institution of compulsory state social insurance to strengthen prevention of accidents and occupational diseases, which, accordingly, has lower economic costs than compensation for workers who have suffered any health damage. He also emphasizes the need to finance preventive measures by the Social Insurance Fund, which is not currently implemented. The article emphasizes importance of updating the list of occupational diseases that occur due to occurrence of modern harmful production factors that harm health of the employees. Currently the list of occupational diseases approved by Ukraine is missing the modern production factors related to digital technologies and psychological risks that are the causes of occupational diseases of the employees. The author also states establishment of the same number of social contributions without taking into account working conditions as another shortcoming of the legislation in the field of compulsory social insurance. The author emphasizes the need to establish occupational risk classes, according to which contributions to the compulsory state social insurance should be paid, which will depend on the occurrence of harmful and dangerous factors in the workplace, number of accidents and occupational diseases. In this regard, the author suggests providing a system of motivation of employers, which provides for the possibility of employers to pay lower contributions in connection with creation of favorable working conditions and reduce accidents and occupational diseases.

Abstract:
Introduction: Health workers and medical students are at occupational risk of blood-borne diseases during the accidents, that is, via percutaneous injury or entry of blood or body fluids through the mucosa or injured skin. Objective: to review and analyze the knowledge, attitudes and perception of risks of blood-borne diseases of the clinical course students and health workers as well as the frequency of accidents. Material and methods: Cross-sectional study was carried out among the students of the Faculty of Medicine in Belgrade, and health workers of the Clinical Center of Serbia. The subjects responded anonymously to questionnaire specially designed for the study. Results: Both students and health workers were aware, in a high percentage, of the fact that the risk of hepatitis B spread was about 30%. Significantly more students gave affirmative reply that blood as biological material was a potential hazard of HIV infection spread (p=0.001), and significantly more students knew that HIV would not be spread by sweat (p=0.001). Hepatitis B vaccination was administered only to 24.1% of students and 71.4% of health workers. About 10% of students and 65.5% of health workers experienced some accident. There was no significant difference of accidents between nurses/technicians and physicians (p>0.05), as well as of accidents and a total length of service (p>0.05). The majority of accidents occurred during the use of needle/sharp object (in 27.3% of students and 33.1% of health workers). About 40% of students and slightly over a half of the workers reported the accidents to appropriate authorities. Additional education in this field is considered necessary by 73% of students. Conclusion: During the studies and via continuous medical education it is necessary to upgrade the level of knowledge on prevention of accidents, what would, at least partially, influence their reduction.

Abstract:
Social instability, violation of human rights to work have made the conditions of safe and harmless work worse. 19 mortal, 42 serious and 796 slight accidents occurred on construction sites during 1995 in Lithuania. The main reasons of occupational accidents are violation of work discipline and lack of organization. 24 708 days are lost because of occupational injuries, or in other words 96 builders did not work for the whole year, and 528.9 thousand litas was paid out according to the lists of disablement. The bad state in occupational safety is unprofitable. Besides, old norms and regulations are still valid at the present time, and hundreds of them are approved as far back as 1980. The drawing up of new regulations is just taking place in Lithuania. The compensation system being in force for employees, who work under harmful and hazardous conditions and social security system for those, who had suffered injuries and occupational diseases, do not stimulate employers to create healthy and safe working conditions. The factor of rest can be observed on construction sites. The heads of construction sites entrust the workers themselves to organize the work without the projects of work execution. Instructions on occupational safety and fire protection are just formal. Many of employees work without the employment contracts. Employers start to understand already that it's better to have labour protection service instead of paying fines for violation of labour protection regulations. The intellect and exacting every-day control of labour protection service specialist brings much more benefit for the prevention of occupational accidents than seldom visits of State Labour Inspection inspector to the enterprise or construction sites. The state of occupational safety depends on psychological factors, too. These factors can be grouped into three groups: natural of the human—natural inborn dispositions (the nervous system, memory, attention, the speed of reaction, intellect); psychological peculiarities of personality (the features of human professional activities, leadership, erudition); professional knowledge formed during learning, studying and training. The human psychology determines how the person interprets and copes with the things going on around him and related to him. Two different persons will act differently in the same situation. When a person reacts sensitively to weak and insignificant signals, he will pay attention to preparative and preventive work, think about potential danger and will take care to avoid accident. And vice versa, people who are not sensitive for such signals takes too little care to insure against accidents. It is reasonable to test psychologically an employee before signing an employment contract with him under market circumstances. It will be one of the conditions fulfilled for professional selection, which will decrease expenses for further training and professional activity of an employee. Fatal and serious disasters on construction sites decreased twice in 1995 as compared to 1994. And the total number of accidents decreased by 12 cases only (Table 1). Dynamics of mortal, heavy and slight accidents in 1991–95 is depicted in Fig. 1. The usage of alcohol is closely related to psycho-emotional stress. It has an influence on the accidents, too. 8 employees were killed while being drunk in 1995. It is 42.11% of total number of killed employees. The most dangerous occupations on construction sites are those of auxiliary workers, bricklayers, carpenters, welders and concreters. Majority of accidents happen to the persons who work for less than one year (fatal accidents—8, heavy accidents—16, slight accidents—163, or 44.44%, 41.08%, 32.21%, respectively).

Abstract:
According to Rostekhnadzor, an increased level of accidents is observed at the facilities of the oil and gas complex of the Russian Federation in 2021, in relation to the previous year. This is due to the insufficiently effective work of the production control services, the lack of a detailed analysis of each accident and accident, the prevention of the study of the causes. Every year, the economic damage caused by accidents, industrial injuries, and occupational diseases increases both in the main and auxiliary activities of companies in the Russian oil and gas complex. Recently, companies in various sectors of the economy have been paying great attention to the introduction of innovative technologies (IT) to ensure industrial safety (IS), including labor protection, fire safety and road safety. It is relevant to study trends in the implementation of IT in the areas of safety assurance used by domestic oil and gas companies to reduce the number of accidents, eliminate occupational injuries and occupational diseases. It should also be emphasized that the literature does not pay enough attention to comprehensive research reviews of projects for the implementation and practical application of IT in the field of IS, and, first of all, in oil and gas companies. These reviews are especially valuable for managers and specialists in the field of IS to make strategic and tactical timely management decisions for the implementation of IT. Research of projects on the introduction of innovative technologies for ensuring industrial safety in Russian oil and gas companies will allow you to build the entire decision-making chain: from goal setting to practical implementation.

This study's objective was to identify the types of workload accruing from agricultural work that are recognized by farmworkers and to verify occupational accidents in two rural environments. This quantitative, exploratory and descriptive study was conducted with 259 farmworkers in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil using a semi-structured questionnaire. Descriptive analysis, Person's Chi-Square test, and coefficient of contingency were used. The workloads most frequently reported by farmers were heat, fungi, chemicals, dust, repetitive movements, heavy load-lifting, and inappropriate postures. Most accidents occurred with farm implements followed by falls. Significant associations were found among different isntruments and accidents. The results suggest the need for investment in health actions in rural environments to prevent or minimize work-related accidents and diseases so that nurses can contribute in a broad and efficient manner.

Descriptive epidemiologic study that aimed to analyze the typical occupational accidents notified by employees of a university hospital in the South of Brazil from 1997 to 2002, and to estimate their risk indicators. A total of 717 accidents were registered; 86% of them (616) were typical and presented an annual average risk coefficient of 6.0 per 100 employees. The groups that presented more risks for accidents were cooks, woodworkers and nursing auxiliaries, while hands were the most affected area. Regarding the accidents nature, the greatest risks involved biological material. Hence, it is necessary to orient personnel about the legal aspects of occupational accidents and review work processes, especially those related to employees who perform activities at greater risk of transmissible diseases like AIDS and hepatitis B and C.

Problem setting. To address practical issues related to the reform of the social insurance system for accidents at workand occupational diseases in Ukraine, it is necessary to explore doctrinal provisions relating to the principles of socialsecurity law, as well as to analyze certain principles of social insurance against accidents at work and occupational diseasesand propose changes to the legislation to formulate certain principles. Target of research. The purpose of this article is to analyze the legal principles of social insurance against accidentsat work and occupational diseases and to develop changes to the legislation in terms of formulating certain principles ofthis institution.Analysis of recent researches and publications. Issues of principles of law in domestic legal science were consideredin scientific works on the general theory of law of such scientists as Yu. P. Bytyak, A. M. Kolodii, S. P. Porebnyak,P. M. Rabinovych, Yu. M. Todyka, M. V. Сvik and many others. Some aspects of the principles of social security law areconsidered in the scientific works of V. M. Andreev, B. I. Stashkiv, B. S. Stychinsky, S. M. Sivak, N. M. Stakhovskaya,S. M. Prilipko. The dissertation researches of T. Z. Garasimov “Principles of the law of social security”, and alsoO. V. Moskalenko “Principles of social insurance in modern conditions of management” deserves special attention. However,a comprehensive study of the principles of social insurance against accidents at work and occupational diseases hasnot been conducted. Article’s main body. The article is devoted to the study of the principles of legal regulation of compulsory statesocial insurance against accidents at work and occupational diseases. The notion of the principles of law is analyzed, inparticular, it is noted that the principles of law are the basic, guiding positions, ideas that express the essence of law as aspecific social regulator. It is emphasized that legal principles are divided into the inherent law as a whole (common law),its individual branches (sectoral) or a group of related industries (intersectoral), as well as the principles of individualinstitutions. The paper analyzes in detail some of the principles specified in Article 3 of the Law of Ukraine “On CompulsoryState Social Insurance”: the principle of legislative definition of the conditions and procedure for social insurance; compulsoryinsurance of persons in accordance with the types of social insurance and the possibility of voluntary insurancein cases provided by law; providing state guarantees for the realization of their rights by insured persons; formation anduse of insurance funds on the basis of solidarity and subsidies, etc. Conclusions and prospects for the development. Based on the analysis of the principles of social insurance againstaccidents at work and occupational diseases enshrined in the legislation, it is proposed to supplement this list with theprinciple of self-government, which stipulates that all members of the insurance system, ie insured and insurers, areequally responsible for insurance fund management.

Until the present, addressing the economic dimension of work accidents and occupational diseases in Romania has been sporadic, relatively unsystematic and unenforceable. Any quantitative assessment of the consequences of accidents and occupational diseases involves determining the cost associated with these undesirable events, which can be used as an economic indicator. Embedding the labor safety criterion among the performance criteria of a company makes its profit directly conditional on the fulfillment of legal requirements on working conditions, so that general management must include among its objectives and maximizing the results of preventive activity. In this context, the paper presents the results of a critical comparative analysis conducted on tools developed worldwide to analyze the costs associated with accidents. The main purpose of the study was to establish the feasibility of introducing the most appropriate tools in the practice of romanian companies, in order to optimize the cost-benefit of investments in occupational safety and health.

Abstract:
Background: The occupational safety and health diagnostic (OSH) constitutes a first step for the design of national programs and ongoing reviews of existing regulations. The OSH diagnostic performed in Ecuador in 2011 is devastating due to the high labor accidents’ toll, the scarce official information, lack of high-level academic education, and insufficient research. Objective: To diagnose the current state of occupational safety and health in Ecuador from official sources of information. Methods: We examined the geographical situation, sociodemographic and public health data, legal regulations, statistics on occupational accidents and diseases, training and research on OSH in Ecuador between 2010 to 2015. The main sources of data and information were: national laws and regulations on OSH, conventions of the International Labor Organization, resolutions of the Andean Community of Nations, and official web pages of national public bodies. In addition, we analyzed the scientific production on OSH of authors with Ecuadorian affiliation, carried out in Ecuador, and published in journals indexed in the main scientific databases. Results: In Ecuador, the rate of employment is 94,3%, and 40% is recognized as adequate employment. The percentage of the working population covered by the social security has raised during the period of study, but it remains around 42% of this population. The country has ratified the 32 ILO OSH conventions and has adopted regional regulatory instruments. The national OSH legal body starts with the Constitution. A total of 99.156 occupational injuries and 2.733 occupational were notified, showing a significant increase from 2010 to 2015. Regarding fatal occupational accidents, 1.524 cases were notified. Training in OSH is focused on occupational risk prevention. Twelve scientific articles on OSH from authors of Ecuadorian affiliation and developed in a national context were identified. Conclusions: OSH status in Ecuador faces a persistent high toll of informal workers, an aging working population, an increase of work accidents, a scarce scientific evidence and an outdated legislation. The design of a OSH National Plan should become a priority in order to improve working conditions and health in Ecuador.

Abstract:
Background: Occupational skin diseases are the most common occupational diseases in many countries. Dermatitis has become one of the top 10 occupational diseases (PAK) based on the potential incidence, severity, and prevention ability. Fishermen are one of the oldest occupations and have a high risk of occupational accidents or occupational diseases, which one of the risks is dermatitis due to the exposure to sea water containing salt which is high enough to absorb the water from the skin. Objective: This study aims to determine the incidence of dermatitis, working duration, duration of exposure, history of skin diseases, use of personal protective equipment, and personal hygiene in the fishing communities in North Bontang. Methods: This study is an analytic observational study with a cross sectional study design. The population in this study was the fishing community in Loktuan Urban-Village, North Bontang. The samples were taken with the purposive sampling and a sample of 154 fishermen was obtained. The data were collected with a questionnaire that has been tested for the validity. The statistical analysis was conducted by Chi Square test with a significance level of 0.05.Results: The results showed that the history of skin diseases, the duration of exposure are related to the incidence of dermatitis in fishermen. Conclusion: Further research is needed to find out other risk factors that can cause dermatitis in fishermen.

Abstract:
Abstract The existence of inadequate working conditions results in new forms of sickness of workers and trigger the increase of accidents and diseases related for their working environment. The objective of this study was to identify and characterize serious and fatal occupational accidents recorded in the Reference Center on Occupational Health of Federal District. This is a retrospective descriptive study with a quantitative approach, characterized by a geographically defined sample, based on data from the Health Information Systems reported during the years 2014 and 2015. The findings revealed that has been reported 997 cases of serious and fatal occupational accidents in the period. The reports were predominantly male (n = 872, 87.46%) in the age range of 20 to 59 years (n = 898, 90.07%), whose occupation is bricklayer (n = 118, 11, 83%). Most of the accidents occurred at work sites (n = 554, 55.5%), triggering fractures of the distal radius (n = 32, 3.2%). The Communication of Occupational Accidents was done in 13.54% (n = 135) of the cases. It has been concluded that the recognition of these characteristics is essential for planning strategies to prevent serious and fatal occupational accidents, however, it is highlighted the need to investigate the main causes of accidents with surveillance actions on occupational health for their working environment. Keywords: Occupational Health, Occupational Accidents Registry, Health Information Systems.

Abstract:
Workers in every occupation face a multitude of hazards in the work place - occupational health and. Safety addresses the broad range of workplace hazards from accident prevention to the more insidious hazards, including toxic fumes, dust, noise, heat, stress, etc. Preventing work-related diseases and accidents must be the goal of occupational health and safety programs. The occupational health service is a link in the work organization. Human life is high in the hierarchy of values for the health professions. Health is a major determinant of the quality of life. Societal values have greater importance in the world of labor, with its complex informal and formal social structures. The cultural values of both workers and the community at large have to be considered. Present-day technology is a valuable asset if its limitations are understood. Computers and their software already provide thoroughly tested systems of data recording, processing, retrieval, and analysis, obviating the need for other records and occupational health services. The occupational illness burden is growing at an increasing rate. The profile of occupational illness has also been modified over a period due to modernization, liberalization, and globalization. Trained human resources in the field of occupational health and safety are far below the requirement. Hence, there is an urgent need for framing suitable policy, developing newer strategies, and developing our knowledge about occupational health and safety measures. Traditional training in occupational health needs to be supplemented with modern techniques.

Abstract:
Policing is one of the riskiest and dangerous professions by its nature. Police officers face a range of risks at work: homicide, assaults, attacks, communicable diseases, car crashes or explosions. The risks vary according to the task being undertaken such as arresting offenders, attending street disturbances or performing traffic duties. These risks, having the characteristics of occupational accident in a way, have institutional losses like compensation, loss of manpower and reputation besides individual results like injury, death, mutilation, and posttraumatic stress disorder, exposure to psychological disorders or decrease in quality of life. Opinions and suggestions of 1066 employees currently working at different ranks and units in Turkish National Police in regards with reducing the risks of occupational accidents and safety risks were studied in this research. Suggestions of the participants were reviewed under total nine headings (themes) consisting of training, physical fitness and health, security measures, institutional policies and procedures, managerial policies, working conditions, equipment, uniforms, and patrol cars.

Abstract:
Musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) are the most common source of occupational health problems in Western countries. In Spain, musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) can be reported either as accidents or occupational diseases. When reported as an occupational disease, a full diagnosis is performed, as the compensation system needs the approval of the social security authority and a mandatory investigation has to be performed. Although many methods are available for investigating the causes of occupational accidents, occupational diseases have not been analysed with the same depth, and there is a lack of investigation methods. This paper aims to analyse the role of 43 occupational investigations of causes of musculoskeletal diseases in the prevention cycle. This study is based on the occupational investigations performed by workplaces’ occupational health and safety specialists when musculoskeletal diseases are reported. The analysis of the data involves descriptive statistics and the Φ coefficient. Based on administrative data, 68 workplaces employing 15,260 workers were surveyed and 41 workplaces with 13,201 workers submitted valid questionnaires to be analysed. The most frequent cause of reported musculoskeletal disease, in terms of primary risk, is repetitive movement. The only proposed measure with a significant association to the exposure by repetitive movements is job rotation (alternating workers between tasks within a job or between activities as a means to vary different levels of exposure). The investigation of occupational diseases has been useful in most of the cases for proposing preventive measures. Most of the workplaces surveyed have performed investigations and adopted preventive measures, but the managers of some workplaces were not aware of any disease notification regarding their workers when surveyed. More research is needed to provide tools for this important task.
