Abstract:
AbstractSmart meters, one of the crucial enablers of the smart-grid concept and cornerstones in smart planning for cities, offer the opportunity for consumers to address their energy consumption effectively through timely and accurate data on their energy usage. However, previous studies have shown that smart meters may not lead to the desired energy savings unless actively used by households. To this end, the research presented in this paper investigates the penetration of smart meters at community level and explores how such a metering system can help people to understand and manage their energy use better. It examines the awareness about smart meters, looks into their presence in current accommodation and focuses on the views people have about smart meters. For this purpose, a questionnaire was prepared and distributed to a group of individuals residing in the wide area of Ancona province in Italy. Although the deployment of modern second-generation smart meters started in 2017 replacing the outdated smart meters massively installed in the 2000s, the results show low-to-moderate levels of awareness of modern smart meters among the respondents and a low presence of second-generation metering devices in their current accommodation. However, the general view expressed by the participants about smart meters is positive. The findings demonstrate that respondents are in need not only of a gauge that measures energy consumption but also of a tool that assists them to manage effectively their energy use.

Abstract:
AbstractMobile payment has become ubiquitous worldwide. It is a form of digital payment activity performed on-site from a mobile device (i.e. smartphone) for the purchase of goods and services using QR or NFC (contactless and proximity card) technology. This study examines destination stakeholders’ level of engagement and involvement in facilitating mobile payments (e.g., AliPay and WeChat Pay) for Chinese tourists. Sabah (Malaysian-Borneo), a popular island destination in Southeast Asia, was selected as the study site. Using a qualitative approach, 25 tourism and hospitality industry practitioners participated in a semi-structured, in-depth interview between February to July 2020. Preliminary results revealed that industry practitioners had been actively seeking to implement mobile payment facilities since late-2017, specifically in the retail sector, as they felt the pressure in accommodating the needs of Chinese tourists. This study offers insights into how industry practitioners address local consumers’ shift in payment usage-behaviours; from traditional forms of payments (e.g., cash and credit card) to mobile payments in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on family accommodation, which is the term used by psychologists to describe the changes that parents make in their own behavior to help their children avoid or lessen feelings of anxiety. The variety of forms that family accommodation can take is limitless, but it can be useful to group these forms into two main categories: (1) participation in anxiety-driven behavior and (2) modification of family routines and schedules. Participation in anxiety-driven behavior occurs when parents are actively engaging in a behavior with the aim of avoiding or reducing the child’s anxiety. These active participation accommodations can take up a significant amount of time each day; they can also be costly. Modification of family routines and schedules happens when parents make changes to the patterns of daily life because of their child’s anxiety. Modification accommodation can impact the entire family; siblings may be impacted as their own needs or plans shift to accommodate their sibling’s anxiety. Over time, accommodations actually can be unhelpful, maintaining rather than reducing the child’s anxiety. An important job for parents of anxious children is to instill in their children the knowledge that they are capable of coping with anxiety. The chapter then differentiates between helpful and unhelpful accommodations. It also addresses why it is difficult for parents not to accommodate.

Abstract:
Communication Accommodation Theory (CAT) allows us to manage our personal and social identities. According to the theory, people adjust speech, vocal patterns, and gestures to help promote mutual understanding in communication (Gallois & Giles, 2015). CAT helps us examine how to emphasize or minimize the differences between ourselves and others during verbal and non-verbal interactions. Language, context, identity, and intergroup and interpersonal factors are used in this theory to make interaction adjustments. Interpersonal control, interpretability, discourse management, and emotional expression are CAT strategies. There are also several supporting approaches that can help manage communication and adjust to receiver reaction including organizational dynamics, active listening, developing the leader within, style diversity, and ongoing self-assessment. The chapter concludes with information on building individual and team trust.

Abstract:
This chapter details the process of creating an accommodation map and monitoring accommodation. Most parents provide many different forms of accommodation, and it is important to make a choice about which to focus on first. If the behavior is something the parents do because of the child’s anxiety and the child becomes more anxious if the parents do not do it, it is likely that it is an accommodation. Knowing as much as possible about the various accommodations parents have been providing will mean they have the most options to choose from, and this will make it more likely that they select the best accommodation to reduce first. After completing an accommodation map, it will be much easier for parents to keep track of the accommodations they continue to provide in the coming days and weeks. Once the parents start actively reducing the accommodation, the log will be a useful way to keep track of changes in the parents’ overall accommodation, alongside the more specific focus on the accommodation they choose to reduce.

Abstract:
The historian Michael Attaleiates was a judge and well-connected political agent active in eleventh-century Byzantium. The opinions he expressed in his historical work, but also in the synopsis of Roman law he dedicated to Michael VII and the monastic charter he produced to organize a privately owned pious foundation, become here entry points for the study of his take on the social and political reality around him. This chapter offers a short biographical sketch of our protagonist, who emerges as a patriotic Roman, who casts a sympathetic eye on popular political action. It then studies Attaleiates as a social and economic agent, looking at his active participation Byzantium’s economy only to reveal a confident investor and builder of a personal fortune. Here is also examined the ways in which Attaleiates’ take on foreign mercenaries outlines a readiness to accommodate others in a Roman polity. Finally, a study of his social circles considers how intellectual affinities and friendships developed, while serving the state and the emperor allowed for the development of a fluid and ever-adjustable politics of accommodation. All in all, we have here an updated portrait of an important figure in eleventh-century intellectual circles.

As a highly safety-critical system, it is insufficient for the Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) Instrumentation and Control (I&C) system to simply rely on a conventional control schemes or controllers which only satisfy stability and performance specification to the perturbation of the nominal plant. Since the current operating or newly-built I&C systems are based on transferring or adapting modern high performance electronic devices, it provides the hardware foundation and possibility to incorporate more advanced control systems into nuclear systems to achieve higher safety and stable perfor

On a global scale, tourism is an actively developing industry, which is of great importance for the development of the economy of many regions of the world. Satisfaction of the local population with the development of tourism is closely related to the opportunities for active participation in the decision-making process on tourism development. The level of satisfaction with tourism can show the feelings and attitude of the residents toward tourism, and in particular, to tourists. Satisfied local people are more hospitable and willing to provide tourists with the necessary products and services

This paper presents an investigation of predictive modeling of space structures for structural health monitoring (SHM) with piezoelectric wafer active sensors (PWAS) transducers. The development of a suitable SHM system for complex space structure is not trivial; creating a robust SHM capability requires at least: (a) flexible accommodation of numerous configurations; (b) detection of damage in complex multifunctional structures; (c) identification if mechanical interfaces are properly connected. To realize this, we propose a predictive modeling approach using both analytical tools and finite

Abstract Naive interpretations of concurrent engineering may expect extreme parallelization of tasks and simultaneous accommodation of multiple perspectives. In fact, from our efforts at modeling tasks in a MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) pressure sensor design project, it appears that data dependencies due to the structure of tasks and the product itself result in scenarios of decision and action that must be carefully coordinated. An active fault tolerant control technique for Underwater Remotely Operated Vehicles is proposed in this paper. The main objective is to develop a controller for the tracking problem, which is robust against possible actuator faults and failures. The main advantage of the proposed fault tolerant control scheme is to develop a unique controller, and thus a unique set of control parameters, regardless the presence of faults and failures. This is achieved through a redistribution of the control effort on the healthy actuators. Simulation results are provided to demonstrate the viability of the pr
