Abstract:
With short-break holidays increasing in popularity, identifying accommodation attributes sought by travellers has attracted the attention of scholars. In addition to identifying attributes, the impact of cultural factors on these attributes remain unknown. Using the Repertory Test, this thesis identifies accommodation attributes for short-break holidays, important to travellers of Chinese descent in Brisbane. The results suggest that 'availability of a restaurant' and 'staff attitude' are the top two attributes. This thesis provides valuable insights for the Australian accommodation industry, helping practitioners better understand travellers' needs for their short-break holidays and predict which accommodation attributes travellers consider the most important.

Abstract:
Abstract In my thesis, I have studied Tampere as a Swedish language island from a sociolinguistic perspective with Bernard Spolsky’s approach to language sociology as the theoretical framework. By language policy I mean language planning efforts and various forms of both conscious and unconscious linguistic practices which become visible as practices in everyday life on different levels of society. Of all the approximately twenty Swedish clubs, associations and institutions in Tampere, I have focused on two important spaces, namely the institutions Svenska samskolan i Tammerfors (the Swedish school) and Tammerfors svenska församling (the Swedish congregation). The aim of the study is to find out what kinds of practices, processes and choices are negotiated in these language island communities. I examine the communities both on an institutional and an individual level. My goal is to describe the kind of a language policy the institutions and individuals create and apply in their daily activities. The study is descriptive and aims to illustrate the sociocultural reality of the Swedish language on both the macro and micro levels in a Finnish-speaking majority context. In the study, I have applied triangulation on the levels of both method and material. I have used various types of data such as questionnaires, field notes, documents, written works, webpages and thematic interviews due to the varying types of the institutions and focus groups. The different materials studied required the application of both quantitative and qualitative methods of analysis. In the case of open questions and thematic interviews I have applied content analysis, leading to a process of abstraction. The results of the study show that the Swedish institutions Svenska samskolan i Tammerfors and Tammerfors svenska församling have over the course of time gone through a change in language policy. This has led to the application of varied linguistic practices in everyday life. Characteristic for the language policy in the Swedish school in the 2010s is language awareness and openness. Characteristic for both institutions studied is interaction between language maintenance efforts and continuous accommodation between Swedish and Finnish in various communicative practices

The government has put a lot of efforts to promote Taiwan’s tourism industry over the past few years, such as “Project Vanguard for Excellence in Tourism” and “Opening up Mainland China People Coming to Taiwan for Tourism”, which makes the number of international visitors increase year by year and reached the highest level of 7.31 million in 2012. It is expected that the demand for accommodation will keep growing as more tourists are coming to Taiwan. Most of the domestic accommodation literature analyzing the demand for accommodation and customers’ satisfaction is case-study based, a more comprehensive evaluation in this area is very rare. Therefore, the purpose of this thesis is to analyze the foreign tourists’ accommodation choices and satisfaction of Taiwan in terms of the overall performance using data from 2007-2010 “Survey of Visitors Expenditure and Trend in Taiwan” conducted by the Tourism Bureau of Taiwan. Using STATA statistical software as well as the multinomial logit model and ordered logit model, we found that (1) the purpose of travel, the type of travel arrangement, age, income, and the country of residence are important determinants of accommodation selection. (2) The type of hotel, the purpose of travel, the type of travel arrangement, age, income, and the country of residence have significant effects on coustomers’ satisfaction. (3) Accommodation satisfaction has been increasing annually since 2008, which may be related to the fact that the government has implemented star-rating hotel apprasial plan since 2008.

Electronic word of mouth (eWOM) plays an important role in Airbnb, the largest accommodation platform. It provides information for hosts to share with other hosts, and also to travelers. Currently, online reviews are regarded as offering useful information for travelers. This thesis has analyzed the online user-generated contents in Airbnb in Taiwan. More and more travelers choose Airbnb because they can interact with hosts and communicate with people from different cultures, while other people love it because the price is cheaper than regular hotels. Therefore, we think that exploring the nature of sharing is an important factor in choosing house types when traveling. As we know, Airbnb offers two different types of accommodation: one is an entire place and the other is a shared room. To compare these two, we first used content analysis by NVivo 11 software to analyze the foreign traveler’s online user-generated content by retrieving different district data from Airbnb of Taiwan. Second, we collected variable rating scores, prices and quantity of reviews from an entire place and a shared room. We compared the two samples by T-test. The research found that review numbers for the host shows a significant difference between an entire place and a shared room in Taipei and Kaohsiung. In addition, price and rating score, including communication and accuracy, show a significant difference between an entire place and a shared room in Taichung, and there is no significant difference between an entire place and a shared room in Hualien. Second, we found that travelers prefer living in an entire place in Taipei and Taichung, while travelers prefer a shared room in Kaohsiung. Third, we identified the most frequently mentioned aspects of online user-generated contents that consumers pay attention to in four cities in Taiwan.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to analyse the influence of the spa as a decision factor in the rural tourism accommodation choice. A survey was administered on a final sample of 342 respondents that attended a rural tourism site at least once in their lives. The results revealed that older tourists usually travel with their partner and family while younger tourists usually travel with their friends. When travelling with their family, tourists are looking to spend time with them. On the other hand, findings also reveal that when travelling without children, “escape from daily routine”, “nature” and “new experiences” and “peace and quiet” are the main motivations for tourists. A cluster analysis revealed distinct groups based on their spa preferences and most valued accommodation features, resulting in the “Low Spa Preferences and Features” and the “High Spa Preferences and Features” segments. This second segment is looking for a full experience including: activities, quality and design features and relaxing at the spa. It was concluded that for this tourist-segment, the spa is a decisive factor for the accommodation choice. In order to further develop and detailed understanding of this tourist profile, future research should focus on in-depth one-to-one interviews.

The influence of a hotel brand to customers’ choice is important for the sustainable management of a hotel. Hotel managers can utilize the brand image to strengthen the association between the hotel brand and the customers’ perception and, therefore, create the differential strategies for marketing. However, most of the previous literatures regarding hotel choice focused on how primary conditions such as service and facility of the hotels affect customer’s accommodation choice. Thus, the purpose of this study was to explore the influence of the hotel brand and the external factors such as significant others and consumer resources on the customers’ intention for choosing an accommodation facility. According to the theory of planned behavior (Ajzen, 1985, 1991), attitude is one of the three determinants of behavioral intention which in turn, is an antecedent of actual behavior. The attitude is formed by the belief which consists of the evaluation of the behavioral outcomes and the likelihood of the outcomes. Accordingly, it was assumed that individuals’ attitude toward a hotel brand can be inferred from the evaluation of whether the brand fulfills their needs (the favorability of the brand) and the strength of the brand association. A business hotel in Hsinchu which belongs to the oldest hotel chain in Taiwan was selected for the study. A questionnaire survey was conducted to collect data from the late September to the end of November, 2005. The sampling frame consisted of all Japanese foreign individual tourists (FITs) listed in the hotel’s daily arrival report during the survey period. The front desk staffs helped to send questionnaires to the guest rooms before the customers checked in. The customers were noted that they can get some tea bags in return if they can fill out the questionnaire and send it back to the front desk. Eighty three out of 689 questionnaires were obtained which led to a valid response rate of 12.05%. The results of the analyses revealed that the actual choice of the hotel in this trip was largely affected by the external factors including company contracts and recommendation of colleagues. But the customers’ intention to choose the hotel in future trips was only affected by the brand image formed after making a stay this time. The more positive the customers’ brand image is for the hotel, the higher their intention is to accommodate in the hotel in the future. Furthermore, it was found that the intention to choose the hotel in the future was influenced by three key elements of the hotel brand image rather than the overall hotel brand image. These three key elements included: “friendly staff”, “feeling like at home”, and “becoming special by visiting this hotel”. Based on the findings of the study, it was suggested that hotel managers should take the strategy of hotel branding to maintain a long-term and sustainable competitive superiority. Moreover, instead of constructing the overall brand image, hotel managers can make use of some key elements of brand image to create brand differentiation in a competitive market.

In recent years, the hotel industry has become one of the fastest growing sectors of Thailand’s economy and also expanded rapidly due to tourist demand. There are many kinds of accommodations provided for travelers, one of them is the latest fashionable accommodation called “Boutique hotel”. With the recent increase in boutique hotel there has been a corresponding growth in the hotel industry during the past few decades. This research aims to identify the factors that possibly have influenced growth in Thailand’s boutique hotel sector, through the identification of attributes that attract travelers to these hotels. A discrete choice modeling approach is used to address the operational challenges of incorporating behavioral elements in choice analysis. The quantitative method was adopted by means of a structured questionnaire and a sample of travelers (n=480) responses were collected. Furthermore, a multinomial logistic model is the appropriate model to gain a deeper understanding of what lead tourists to choose accommodation choice among branded hotel, boutique hotel, and budget hotel. The research reveals that the experience in people’s last accommodation stay is critical for accommodation preference therefore hoteliers of these three kinds of accommodation should be concerned about customer’s experience. Additionally, some of the demographic characteristics of tourists such as age, travel partner, nationality also show significant effects in this study.

With the recent increase in backpacker traveling there has been a corresponding worldwide growth in the backpacker market during past few years. This research aims to provide a better understanding concerning different characteristics of the backpackers in Europe particularly in UK, who usually prefer to stay at budget accommodation. Emphases have been made to extract deeper insight into their motivation, preferences and limitations in order to establish the potential of this market. This quantitative study compares between backpackers traveled in UK, who prefer to stay in budget accommodation and who prefer to stay in hotels, in terms of attitudes and activities. A sample of backpackers (n= 528) responses were collected by means of a structured questionnaire. The current study is based on the assumption that apparent differences would exist between the two groups in terms of their motives, planning patterns and kinds of transportation and accommodation they prefer. The present findings suggest that backpacker’s choice differ in terms of motivation and demographics status. This could be used in further research on decision-making, distribution patterns, geographical visitation, and economic impacts, which would enable marketers and managers to better, target their efforts. The study also reveals that different countries of origin are characterized by their preferences for specific travel styles. While travel styles exist across nationalities, the trip origin has a modifying influence on the specific behavior and the types’ profiles. The findings of this research also lead to the suggestion that backpackers are a potentially valuable niche market with specific and complementary advantages over other more general forms of tourism which should be seeking to develop.

Abstract:
The present thesis focusses their studies on the most important choice attributes that Millennials consider when searching for a hospitality accommodation and also reflects on their perception of Local Accommodation in specific. Recently, the Tourism market is facing the biggest challenge of the previous years, the pandemic COVID-19, which reduced significantly the guests staying in all types of accommodations in Portugal for vacation. Despite of this, it also appears that a good part of this business has come to represent the owner's main source of income, so it is important to reflect on a strategy to attract the biggest customer of tourism - the Millennials. The Generation Y behaviour was studied in the present report in order to know how Local Accommodation can meet their needs by having an offer with the attributes they value the most. Also, it was done an analysis on how the different demographic characteristics and travel behaviours affect these preferences. To achieve this a lot of information was collected from scientific articles and it was developed an online survey, which gathered data from 242 travellers. From this analysis it was possible to structure the most important attributes by levels of priority for the consumer, which will consequently be the order of approach suggested to be taken by the owner of the establishment.

Most researches of visitors’ choice behavior focus on recreational sites, traveling destinations or accommodation facilities within a specific area. But it is less to consider the choice behavior on accommodation site and factors influencing such behavior. The choice behavior on accommodation site is different from the purchase behavior of general products in that the former relates to the perception and preference of environmental factors to a larger extent than the later. The perception and preference of environmental factors was postulated to relate to personal values and interests which are important components of lifestyle. However, this has not been investigated yet. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships among lifestyle, environmental preference, and accommodation site choice. Lushan Hot Springs and Chingjing in Nantou County were selected as study areas. During June 26 to August 27, 2004, an on-site questionnaire survey was conducted to collect data from visitors to the study areas and 442 valid questionnaires were obtained. Statistical analyses included item analysis, factor analysis, cluster analysis, chi-square test of independence, logistic regression, and MANOVA. There are several salient findings from the results of analyses: 1.Five lifestyle groups were identified based on cluster analyses. They were labeled as: positive/independent, pedestrian, realistic/practical, positive/practical, and irresolute/ merry. 2.Eleven of the 17 environmental attributes of accommodation site were perceived to be higher in Chingjing than in Lushan Hot Springs. Only two attributes including hot spring spa and night life were perceived to be higher in Lushan Hot Springs than in Chingjing. 3.The relationship between lifestyle and accommodation site choice is not significant. 4.Environmental preference is significantly related to accommodation site choice. Using environmental preference as predictor of accommodation site choice, the accurate prediction rate is 61.4% from a cross table analysis and reaches 67.2% using a logistic regression. 5.Lifestyle is significantly associated with environmental preference. There are significant differences among some of the five lifestyle groups in regard to (a) the perceived importance of environmental factors when choosing an accommodation site, (b) the perceived performance of environmental factors in Lushan Hot Springs and Chingjing, respectively, and (c) the overall environmental preference for both Lushan Hot Springs and Chingjing. According to the findings, it was suggested that the owners of Lushan Hot Springs should take their advantages of hot spring SPA and night life in order to segment their target market from that of Chingjing. Moreover, accommodation owners of Lushan Hot Springs and Chingjing should adopt different positioning strategies. The former should emphasize the image of tradition and nostalgia, while the later should focus on the image of European romance. Since the lifestyle used in this study is a general one and was found not significantly associated with accommodation site choice, it was suggest that a more sophisticate measuring scale of lifestyle needs to be developed in future study. Furthermore, a specific lifestyle, such as a vacation lifestyle developed specifically for domestic vacationers, should be employed, in comparison with the general lifestyle, to investigate the relationship between potential visitors’ lifestyle and their choices of accommodation site.

This study addressed the issue about the correlation analysis among the accommodation choice, marketing strategy, willingness to stay for including aging village consideration into hotel/resort, and the retired government official at Taitung area will be taken as an illustrative example. There are 233 repliers from 300 questionnaires from those retire government official at Taitung area. After making statistical analysis, several assumptions were be obtained: there are significant effects on accommodation choice, marketing strategy, willingness to stay to aging village consideration for the different observations; there are significant effects on willingness to stay to those observations with the different accommodation choices; the observations’ preferences of the marketing strategy will have significant effect on the willingness to stay. The word of mouth (WOM) will be the suitable choice since taking the marketing strategy decision. Hence, the enterprises can enhance the stay satisfaction to improve the promotion willing and the concept of WOM marketing can be achieved.

The main purpose of this study to explore the relationship between research and Breakfast accommodation of mainland tourists to Taiwan the free exercise of travel and behavior. Bed and Breakfast in the country in recent years, the region has developed considerably, but the quality varies widely, the basic intrinsic safety, sanitation, hardware facilities and software services, business management, outside the local culture, the natural landscape, ecological, environmental resources and on Jieyou considerable gap. Accordingly, the need to further explore the characteristics and needs of the guest houses Sun Moon Lake, so in the industry to identify the actual needs of passengers, fix appropriate business direction. In recent years, a large number of houses spring up in the country, together with the original tourist hotel, leisure travelers accommodation and hospitality services to provide business competition is very fierce. In this study, the relationship to the accommodation needs of travelers through tourism generated by the B & B accommodation and facilities and stay cognitive satisfaction, willingness to revisit and re-select between Sun Moon Lake Bed and Breakfast willingness light concept, analysis of variance were used to establish the structure and mode B & B lodging mainland tourists to be explored situations to learn to choose their accommodation and relationship expectations and levels of satisfaction before lodging their relationships. Based on findings suggest guesthouse owners prior preparation operations should be directed to fully understand the needs of Bed and Breakfast Travelodge and behavioral characteristics, and should improve environmental experience feelings Travelodge primary focus, followed by the promotion of economic convenience and Bed and Breakfasts Featured Travelodge strengthen occupancy Travelodge . This paper discusses the Sun Moon Lake B & B industry, how in the fierce competition set the direction, in order to retain its competitive advantage, the researchers found that B & B is in the market price of the B & B, the main customer base is the service sector, young married main guesthouse owners can make accommodation arrangements designed for major customers, can provide a variety of promotional activities on the internet to attract visitors spending again.

This research addresses the issue of how different spaces of accommodation influence the life style of university lesbians. Will lesbians who live separate from their family get more freedom than those who live together with their family? Are lesbians who live in university dormitory still under constant surveillance although they live separate from their family? Data consists of personal observations and in-depth interviews with eight university lesbians. The findings of this research are: Firstly, different attitudes toward “come out” will influence the university lesbians to choose the place of their residence. These attitudes can be divided into four types: 1. Totally hide, 2. Partly come out and partly hide, 3. Totally come out, and 4. Ambiguous and unidentified. Secondly, the university lesbians in this research have different attitudes toward “come out” in different places. Thirdly, the university lesbians usually have different self-performing strategies and know how to use them because of their various cultural capitals. Fourthly, the university lesbians have different life styles in different places of residence. In this research three types of life styles can be identified: 1. Living in original family -- Simple living type 2. Living in university dormitory -- “ Living in temporality” type 3. Living in privately rented student dwellings – “Open to everyone” type Finally, university lesbians are willing to live together with heterosexuals in comparison with lesbians because the formers will let them feel more independent.

This study aims to explore the following:the extent of environmental literacy of Taiwanese people, Taiwanese’accommodation behavior intentions for green hotels and the relationship between environmental literacy and accommodations behavioral intentions for green hotels. In this study, environmental literacy and green hotel accommodations behavioral intentions were measured by questionnaire items generated by previous studies. The subjects were visitors in Taiwan. Purposive sampling was used to choose the research site, which were the Taipei Main Station, the Songshan Airport, and the Ximending area. The findings reveal that the mean of the tourists’ overall environmental literacy is 3.52. The "emotional facet" in the environmental literacy scale receives the highest mean, (M=3.91), while the "cognitive facet" has the lowest mean (M = 3.05), showing that the tourists do not have sufficient knowledge on biology and environmental science. The accommodation behavioral intentions for green hotels of the tourists has the mean of 5.12), showing that the tourists have high intention and willingness to consider green hotels as accommodation. The "emotional facet " and "behavior facet" of tourists’ environmental literacy have significant positive effect on their accommodation behavioral intentions, with the "behavior facet" significantly higher than the "emotional facet". As the four facets of environmental literacy are ranked from easy to difficult, environmental literacy should be cultivated through the strengthening of the basic cognitive level, even though the ‘cognitive facet’ and the "skill facet" reveal no significant effect. Therefore, it is suggested that to promote green hotels in the future, tourists’ understanding of environmental issues and their sentiments towards the environment should be strengthened, which thereby may affect their behavioral intentions for green hotels.

Sener, Ipek N. "Accommodating flexible spatial and social dependency structures in discrete choice models of activity-based travel demand modeling." Thesis, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2152/ETD-UT-2010-08-1609.

Full text
Abstract:
Spatial and social dependence shape human activity-travel pattern decisions and their antecedent choices. Although the transportation literature has long recognized the importance of considering spatial and social dependencies in modeling individuals’ choice behavior, there has been less research on techniques to accommodate these dependencies in discrete choice models, mainly because of the modeling complexities introduced by such interdependencies. The main goal of this dissertation, therefore, is to propose new modeling approaches for accommodating flexible spatial and social dependency structures in discrete choice models within the broader context of activity-based travel demand modeling. The primary objectives of this dissertation research are three-fold. The first objective is to develop a discrete choice modeling methodology that explicitly incorporates spatial dependency (or correlation) across location choice alternatives (whether the choice alternatives are contiguous or non-contiguous). This is achieved by incorporating flexible spatial correlations and patterns using a closed-form Generalized Extreme Value (GEV) structure. The second objective is to propose new approaches to accommodate spatial dependency (or correlation) across observational units for different aspatial discrete choice models, including binary choice and ordered-response choice models. This is achieved by adopting different copula-based methodologies, which offer flexible dependency structures to test for different forms of dependencies. Further, simple and practical approaches are proposed, obviating the need for any kind of simulation machinery and methods for estimation. Finally, the third objective is to formulate an enhanced methodology to capture the social dependency (or correlation) across observational units. In particular, a clustered copula-based approach is formulated to recognize the potential dependence due to cluster effects (such as family-related effects) in an ordered-response context. The proposed approaches are empirically applied in the context of both spatial and aspatial choice situations, including residential location and activity participation choices. In particular, the results show that ignoring spatial and social dependencies, when present, can lead to inconsistent and inefficient parameter estimates that, in turn, can result in misinformed policy actions and recommendations. The approaches proposed in this research are simple, flexible and easy-to-implement, applicable to data sets of any size, do not require any simulation machinery, and do not impose any restrictive assumptions on the dependency structure.

For Yilan regional hospital, the opening of the Taipei-Yilan Expressway may increase competition from Taipei hospitals due to the time spent from Yilan to Taipei will be shortened. Patients who used to see a doctor in Yilan may change their medical care seeking decision and go to larger hospital such as a medical center in Taipei. This study focuses on which kind of patients leave Yilan and go to hospital in Taipei, how patients make their decision of choosing hospital, what strategies can be used by Yilan local hospital to keep their patients, and the fitness of the Ajzen theory of planned behavior for the field of decision making for hospital choice. Questionnaires were handed out to the people who received health service in Yilan hospital in December 2005 and a total of 350 valid questionnaires were collected. A series of statistical data processing have been performed. According to the findings, this study provides some accommodative strategies for Yilan regional hospital, such as enhancing hardware of the hospital, improving the convenience to receive health service, and become a good and trusty neighbor of the community. The conclusions of this study are listed as follows: 1.Before the opening of the expressway, only 29.1% serious patients (who need admission) want to stay in Yilan, moreover, 51.1% of these patients change their mind and go to Taipei after the opening of the expressway. 2.The influential factors of the decision making for hospital choice can be summarized into six factors according to the model of Ajzen theory, including (1) the quality and attitude of medical personnel. (2) the environment and equipment of hospital. (3) the convenience to receive health service. (4) the opinion of important family (5) the economic condition fit to the hospital (6) the working time fit to the hospital. According to the results, the importance of “the environment and equipment of hospital” is the first ranking, followed by “the quality and attitude of medical personnel”. 3.Ajzen theory of planned behavior is suitable for the field of decision making for hospital choice. The accurate prediction rate of choosing hospital using Ajzen model is 66.4%, and it will raise to 75.6% if the demographic characteristics are added into consideration by using the statistic method of discriminant analysis.
