To date, this literature has been motivated by explaining a divergence of income and has focused on finding persistent factors that can explain a chronic failure of growth in Africa. By relying on a novel database on household budgets, it is shown that economic growth has been accompanied by a long-run reduction of inequality that however appears to have been reversed in the last two decades. Abstract:
This paper will examine the Paraguayan growth experience since the early 1960slooking at different periods to try to identify the main factors behind particular levels performance. Studying the determinants of growth is particularly important for a country like Paraguay that just recently recovered the most basic political rights and is still trying to consolidate its gain by building effective democratic institutions. Thus far the positive political trend has not been accompanied by economic growth and less poverty. This paper is part of the project "Explaining Economic Growth Performance" la

Abstract:
The value of equity market transactions in emerging economies soared from about 2 percent of the world total in 1986 to 12 percent in 1996. This boom was accompanied by an explosion of international capital flows, especially flows into developing country stock markets. Moreover, while equity flows were a negligible part of capital flows to emerging markets a decade ago, equity flows now represent about 20 percent of private capital flows to developing nations.

Abstract:
This paper deals with a topic that has been amply debated in the development literature: the relationship between trade and growth. The paper's hypothesis is that what matters for growth is not merely openness to trade, or, for that matter, export growth per se. The key feature of countries that have surged ahead in recent decades is that fast export growth has been accompanied by export diversification. The paper tests this hypothesis in the framework of an empirical growth model for the period 1980-2003. It finds considerable support for the hypothesis that diversified export growth is one o

Abstract:
In this paper we propose the use of an alternative methodology to track low incomes based on Atkinson's (1970) family of "equally distributed equivalent income" functions, which are called "general means" here. We provide a new characterization of general means that justifies their use in this context. Our method of evaluating the effects of growth on poor incomes is based on a comparison of growth rates for two standards of living: the ordinary mean and a bottom-sensitive general mean. The motivating question is: To what extent is growth in the ordinary mean accompanied by growth in the gener

The Multilateral Investment Fund (MIF) was created in 1993 by 21 donor countries In 2007, 39 donor countries replenished the fund with a renewed mandate to support economic growth and reduce poverty in Latin American and the Caribbean. This book highlights the major achievements of MIF II from 2007 through 2015, as it adapted and accompanied the region through changing economic and social conditions. During this period, the MIF continued fostering systemic change in critical sectors that support economic growth for poor and vulnerable populations in the region.

Abstract:
This paper explores the effects of weather-induced rural-urban migration on urban labor and housing markets in Brazil. In order to identify causal effects, it uses weather shocks to the rural municipalities of origin of migrants. We show that larger migration shocks led to an increase in employment growth and a reduction in wage growth of 4 and 5 percent, respectively. The increased migration flows also affected the housing market in destination cities. On average, it led to 1 percent faster growth of the housing stock, accompanied by 5 percent faster growth in housing rents. These effects var

Using the 2006 Gallup World Survey of life satisfaction in 130 countries, this paper finds a very solid relationship between satisfaction and income (both across and within countries) and uncovers the unhappy growth paradox, whereby faster growth rates are accompanied by lower levels of satisfaction. The losses of satisfaction associated with growth are more pronounced in the material domains of life and are greater in richer and more urban societies. At the individual level, although higher incomes tend to be reflected in greater satisfaction, an increase in the income of the social group to

This technical note presents a model to evaluate the costs and benefits of plans to scale up public investment. It creates a theoretical framework that considers the positive effects of investment on growth and, in turn, the impact it can have on government fiscal accounts, particularly debt service. This note is accompanied by a template that implements the proposed methodology, which the author hopes will be useful for the work of country economists at the Inter-American Development Bank.

The world’s poor are ‘trapped’ in poverty. How can we unlock development so that poor countries can sustain economic growth over long periods of time? Our report considers this problem on three levels, the national economy, the private sector, and citizenship. At the core of each chapter is new research by CAGE members and associates. Chapter 1 addresses the factors underlying sustainable growth of the national economy. Chapter 2 looks for the sources of business capacity and sustainable growth of the private sector. Chapter 3 links citizenship to economic development, showing how political vo

The centrifugal forces of economic globalization in the 1990's ran parallel with centripetal forces of regionalization. While seemingly pulling in opposite directions, the two forces reflected complementary dimensions of dynamic capitalist market development. The completion of the Uruguay Round and growing membership in the World Trade Organization (WTO) was accompanied by a situation in which regional integration schemes became commonplace; indeed, practically all WTO members are now party to one or more regional accords. Latin America is a good example of these dual forces. Between the mid-1
