Wordelman, Peter Dale. "Daniel Moe's choral works with brass accompaniment." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/185475.

Full text
Abstract:
Many twentieth-century American composers have written works for chorus with brass accompaniment. This study focuses on the compositional techniques Daniel Moe applies to his brass and choral works and the musical and religious influences that aided in the development of Moe's composition language. Eight of Daniel Moe's works for brass and chorus are analyzed to determine the influences and techniques employed in his style of composition. The analysis reveals: the choir and brass remain independent and never dominate each other, the brass consistently play at their loudest dynamic levels while the choir is not singing, the heights of the choral phrases are unaccompanied, and final cadences are voiced with the highest pitches in the choral writing which allows an equality of forces. As a conductor, Moe has encountered many Venetian and contemporary works for brass and chorus that had a direct result on the techniques he applied to his brass and choral works. The evidence suggests that Daniel Moe's choral works with brass accompaniment involve a combination of twentieth-century harmonies and rhythms, Biblical and liturgical texts influenced by his strong Lutheran heritage, and a style of transparent scoring which carefully integrates the brass instruments into the overall texture of his compositions.

Full text
Abstract:
Recent Berlioz studies tend to stress the significance of the French tradition for a balanced understanding of Berlioz's music. Such is necessary because the customary emphasis on purely musical structure inclines to stress the influence of German masters to the neglect of vocal and therefore rhetorical character of this tradition. The present study, through a fresh examination of Berlioz's vocal-orchestral scores, sets forth the various orchestrational patterns and the rationales that lay behind them.

Full text
Abstract:
"Improvisation without Accompaniment" is a lyric investigation into the ways that an awareness of mutability and death can clarify or distort our experience of the world. The poems in this collection draw upon the speaker's small-town Texas upbringing to explore broader questions that arise as a consequence of his burgeoning awareness of mortality: What are the moral imperatives for an individual citizen in a larger political community? What are the bidirectional effects of our relationship with place and the environment? Given the painful transience of human experience, what does it mean to live a good life? The book is characterized by psychological poems that illustrate the mind's movement, poems that use syntactic variation and tonal shifts to indicate an openness to changes of heart and mind. "What Passes Here for Mountains," an in-progress poetry manuscript, is driven by a similar impulse to explore the precise ways that our beliefs and opinions affect our immediate experience. These newer poems address anxieties about climate change, the effects of childhood trauma on the adults those children become, and the obstacles to self-actualization.

Manamela, Ledile Edith. "Challenges during clinical accompaniment : reflections of the undergraduate nursing students." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/72787.

Full text
Abstract:
INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND: One of the prerequisites during the training of nursing students is clinical accompaniment by professional nurses, which offers direction and guidance to professional development. Exposure to the Clinical Learning Environment (CLE) affords nursing students with an exclusive background for experiential learning and skills that are rare to be acquired elsewhere. Professional nurses in hospitals and clinics are expected to accompany nursing students in the CLE to assist them in achieving the learning outcomes. However, nursing students at the selected higher education institution indicated dissatisfactions with the conduct of professional nurses during their placement at the CLE. OBJECTIVES: To explore and describe the challenges experienced by the undergraduate nursing students within the CLE in the Capricorn District, Limpopo Province. METHODOLOGY: A qualitative research method was used to explore and describe the challenges experienced by undergraduate nursing students in the CLE in the Capricorn District, Limpopo Province. The population comprised of undergraduate student nurses enrolled for Bachelor of Curationis Degree for the academic year 2017 from the selected higher education institution, with a total number of 258 undergraduate nursing students. Purposive sampling was used to select participants who are more knowledgeable about the problem studied. The third- and fourth-year undergraduate nursing students, who are 122 in total, were selected purposively until data saturation was reached. Four focus group interviews were conducted to collect data. Tesch’s open coding data analysis method was used to analyze data. Ethical considerations and trustworthiness were maintained throughout the study. FINDINGS: Three main themes and sub-themes related to challenges of the undergraduate nursing students within the Clinical Learning Environment emerged, based on the findings of the study namely: Challenges experienced by students; inadequate learning opportunities and Attitudes of professional nurses. These themes further guided the recommendations for the nursing practice, nursing education and for future research. CONCLUSION: A conducive learning environment should be established to enable nursing students to acquire professional knowledge and skills through team-work between nursing education institutions, clinical staff, and multidisciplinary team members. Professional nurses need to support and treat students fairly, irrespective of their educational institution or field of training.

Kindel, Laurie Ann. "Psychosocial Accompaniment of Unaccompanied Central American Youth| A Collaborative Inquiry." Thesis, Pacifica Graduate Institute, 2017. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10255962.

Full text
Abstract:

This liberatory participatory action research involved a collaborative inquiry by unaccompanied minors from Central America. Using participatory action research and a liberatory approach, the study followed the youth as they investigated and shared their experiences in the systems of custody and legal protection that exist for unaccompanied minors in the United States. The research question, developed with the youth, was what is the experience of unaccompanied minors as they journey to the United States? Their collaborative inquiry is reflected in the mural that they created and their complementary written personal narratives. The co-creation of the mural and personal narratives developed their self-awareness as they discovered and understood their social placement. The research question also stimulated the participants’ consideration of taking action for social change through the sharing of their experience with the public. The work of these youth took place in the accompaniment of adults who witnessed the participants’ inquiry and shared knowledge with them about the journeys of other unaccompanied minors.

Keywords: accompaniment, collaborative inquiry, liberatory psychology, youth participatory action, unaccompanied minors.

Ip, Kim Kuok. "Portfolio of compositions : five compositions for solo instruments with accompaniment." Thesis, University of Salford, 2011. http://usir.salford.ac.uk/26727/.

Full text
Abstract:
This PhD thesis consists of a portfolio of musical compositions for solo instruments with accompaniment. The portfolio, which contains absolute and programme music, includes two largescale works: Piano Concerto with Symphony Orchestra Fok Siu Yok and Saxophone Concerto with Symphonic Band - Pimenta. There is also music for Clarinet, Violin and Guzheng (A Chinese "Zither like" instrument). The principal of the thesis is specifically researching about Chinese tradition music, including its folk tunes, religious music and opera music. The portfolio shows the endeavors of putting these kinds of musical materials into classical musical composition: containing tonal, modal and serial works. Nevertheless, other elements like jazz and Fado (a type of Portuguese singing) are also attempted in some pieces of this portfolio. Dukkha, Havoc in the Heavenly Kingdom and Pimenta were premiered in Macau (Small Auditorium, Macao cultural centre) on 3rd October 2010.

Miles, Natasha Frances. "Approaches to accompaniment on the Baroque guitar, c.1590-c.1730." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2014. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/5149/.

Full text
Abstract:
The five-course guitar was used as an instrument of accompaniment from the mid-sixteenth to the late-eighteenth century, yet its importance in this role has largely been overlooked in scholarship to date. While there are some isolated studies of individual sources, this is the first comprehensive study of the substantial body of extant guidelines with a view to understanding the styles of accompaniment on the instrument and how their practices developed during this period. This thesis documents the chronological development of the performance practices in such a way that parallels may be drawn between these sources and treatises for other instruments of accompaniment. Guitar accompaniments were, however, also strongly influenced by the performance practices associated with alfabeto chord symbols. Thus, to enable an understanding of the more idiomatic characteristics of guitar accompaniment stemming from alfabeto practices, a detailed evaluation of the true sophistication of the language of alfabeto is provided for the first time. This study provides a complete re-evaluation of the five-course guitar as an instrument of accompaniment; it challenges the past relegation of the instrument to ‘light’ or ‘frivolous’ musical repertoires; and it highlights the various approaches that were adopted in diverse performance contexts.

Chaves, EmÃlia Soares. "Accompaniment of children and adolescents with family history of arterial hypertension." Universidade Federal do CearÃ, 2007. http://www.teses.ufc.br/tde_busca/arquivo.php?codArquivo=1041.

Full text
Abstract:
CoordenaÃÃo de AperfeiÃoamento de Pessoal de NÃvel Superior
The presence of alterations of blood pression in children and adolescents has shown that arterial hypertension may have its initial history in this life stage. It is believed that the harmful effects of hypertension, when they exist, could be minimized if their presence was detected precociously, if the evaluation of blood pressure was done periodically and if it were a mandatory part of the consultations to children and adolescents. Epidemiologic studies about blood pressure in childhood also reveal that the persistence of high values in this stage of life reinforces the idea that hypertension in adulthood is a direct result of hypertension in childhood. One aimed to follow children and adolescents with family history of arterial hypertension for a long time, analyzing the evolution of percentage/classification of blood pressure in children and adolescents. The longitudinal/prospective study was developed in a poor community of Fortaleza-CearÃ. The blood pressure was evaluated in five meetings: first semester of 2004; first semester of 2005; second semester of 2005; first semester of 2006 and second semester of 2006. The data collection was conducted at home in pre-determined periods. By the data obtained, it was possible to confirm that children and adolescents can have high blood pressure, even without an specific cause and no sinthomatology. The group presented was composed by 141 participants, in the majority females (71). The ages varied from 6 to 21 years old in the period of accompaniment. The highest values of blood pressure were found in the male patients. A bigger percentage of the children and adolescents were relatives of second degree of arterial hypertension bearers (48.9%), and these showed the biggest average values of SBP and DBP. Out of 92 children, 30 remained with no alterations of the percentages of blood pressure in all evaluations; 42 presented alterations starting from the 3rd evaluation; eight showed alterations of the percentage only on the last evaluation conducted; 11 showed alterations of the percentages of blood pressure in all the evaluations and 20 presented alterations of the percentages in some evaluation, but in the last one showed normal percentage of blood pressure. Out of 49 adolescents, 32 remained with no alterations of the percentages of blood pressure in all evaluations; eight presented alterations starting from the 3rd evaluation; two individuals showed alterations of the percentages only on the last evaluation; six presented alterations of the percentages of blood pressure in all the evaluations and three presented alterations of percentages in some evaluation, but in the last one presented normal blood pressure percentage. It was not possible to identify statistic significance concerning the risk factors presented during the accompaniment, apparently being the family factor the biggest contribution to the high values of blood pressure. It is confirmed the necessity of a regular monitoring of children and adolescentsâ blood pressure and, even without significant statistic correlation, the precocious identification of risk factors such as overweight, obesity, sedentarism, positive history to hypertension, smoking and drinking in the prevention of future cardiovascular events.

Dubique, Kobel. "Humanitarian aid after the 2010 Haitian earthquake: the case of accompaniment." Thesis, Harvard University, 2014. http://nrs.harvard.edu/urn-3:HUL.InstRepos:13041362.

Full text
Abstract:
Background After the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, there was a significant need for basic services such as health, water, food, sanitation, school, protection and security in the largest camp in Port-au-Prince, Park Jean Marie Vincent (PJMV). PJMV IDP camp was located in the commune of Cité Soleil; a slum in Haiti labeled as a red zone and widely regarded as the most insecure place on earth. As a result, the camp residents were left to live on their own contradicting the humanitarian principle of humanity and impartiality. Strong solidarity developed amongst camp residents leading them to organize themselves in order to decrease structural violence. Zanmi Lasante (ZL), a healthcare and human rights organization that works with poorest and most vulnerable communities in Central Plateau, would cross the red zone to accompany the camp residents by providing training, materials, and resources to set up aid activities. Using a qualitative methodology, this study will describe the activities ZL completed and present the outcomes of those activities. This study will argue that the ZL accompaniment helped to decrease structural violence and chaos and allowed the camp residents to persevere. Methods This study is based on a personal story and experience of the researcher in PJMV IDP camp after the 2010 Haitian earthquake. We collected data from semi-structured interviews with 5 ZL staff, 7 camp leaders, and 5 camp residents. The researcher conducted a narrative analysis to recreate a collective memory from four viewpoints: 1) Zanmi Lasante staff; 2) camp leaders; 3) IDP camp residents and 4) the researcher. The researcher used processual methods of qualitative research to identify themes and exemplar narratives to compare and contrast these multiple viewpoints. Results The interviews offered multiple viewpoints on the activities in the camp both before and during the time ZL was active. Activities included creating and staffing a health clinic, training community health workers, establishing a nutrition center, ensuring HIV-AIDS care, and launching a response to the cholera outbreak. In addition, ZL conducted other kinds of activities that put health in the social context, including building a water purification system, establishing a tent village, creating a school program, launching an initiative to protect women from sexual violence, and advocating for food and sanitation. The researcher finds that those additional activities generated good outcomes such as health, security, job creation, capacity building, community engagement and participation, and community empowerment. ZL used a collaborative approach, integrating accompaniment into all activities by working with local residents, leaders and other organizations. This accompaniment decreased structural violence and helped camp residents to be more self-sufficient. The study also explores the challenges of accompaniment as responsibilities for these activities were shifted from ZL to the camp residents and local leaders. Conclusions The goal of this study is to describe the activities conducted by ZL in PJMV from January 2010 to January 2012 and how the approach of offering aid using the accompaniment model impacted the social context in the camp. The researcher recommends that humanitarian aid from within and beyond a disaster affected community be geared toward supporting and partnering with local communities and local organizations. In this way, humanitarian aid will strengthen local communities in a way that may be sustained once these organizations leave.

Abstract:
This is a thesis comprising two components: a portion of my novella and a dissertation. My work of fiction, Turning Road, draws loosely on the Bluebeard fairytale, as well as theories of identity and nation, as a means of exploring a young Australian woman’s journey to London, a journey which is both symbolic and psychological. The second component is the critical essay, which considers the extent to which Australian women’s expatriate fiction can be read as a variation of Bluebeard. Australian women’s expatriate fiction has been characterised as a journey involving a doomed love affair with a self-centred male in London.1 To date, most critical attention on the genre has focussed on the extent to which it employs the Odyssean myth to consider gender and colonial identity. It is my contention that reading Bluebeard in The Transit of Venus highlights issues of identity and power in relation to gender and nation. Through its central themes of threat, sexuality, secrecy, self-knowledge and seriality, Bluebeard warns against prescribed gender roles/relations and limiting identifications, and works towards depicting a new liberating space between contrasting spaces identified as home and abroad.

Abstract:
The aim of this research project was to explore the training, experience and knowledge which are necessary to offer spiritual companionship. I wished to research this particularly in relation to women, since women historically have been invisible in many religious faiths, their voices unheard, and their stories unwritten, and because of my own experience of struggle within the institutional church. The research methodology was a bricolage of heuristic enquiry, organic enquiry, and person-centred enquiry. Thirteen women were interviewed face to face using semi-structured interviews, including seekers, participants from training courses, and trainers. The interviews were transcribed and participants were invited to amend or clarify any points they were concerned about. The data was analysed into themes which emerged from the data. The participants had the opportunity to read the draft of the data presentation and ask for changes. The main themes are presented alongside my own process, reflections, poetry and art work relating to that and to the processing of the data, and also interwoven with quotes from the diaries of Etty Hillesum. The themes identified are the process of finding a spiritual companion, the need not to be directed, the quality of the spiritual director’s presence, issues of power, trust and risk, issues around holding or failing to hold boundaries, the boundary with friendship, and the nature of the experience needed by the spiritual companion. The needs of women in this relationship are explored, and the contribution of the person-centred approach is considered. The conclusions are that this is a complex relationship which requires commitment on the part of the spiritual companion to their own spiritual growth, alongside a person-centred approach to being alongside the seeker, and also a sophisticated awareness of the issue of appropriate boundaries, with particular reference to the needs of women.

Rikhotso, Steppies Richard. "Clinical accompaniment in a rural hospital : student and professional nurses experience / Steppies Richard Rikhotso." Thesis, North-West University, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/4738.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigated the clinical accompaniment of nursing students in a rural hospital. Nursing students are allocated to clinical facilities for clinical exposure and learning opportunities; to integrate theoretical knowledge with practical skills and professional socialization under guidance and support from professional practitioners. Although the rural hospital, as context for this study, provides unique and challenging learning opportunities for clinical teaching and learning, the environment as such and the relationship between the stakeholders (nursing students and professional nurses) seem to be questionable and not conducive for learning. A qualitative, explorative, descriptive and contextual design served as framework for this study. Data was collected by means of semi–structured focus–group interviews with samples selected from two (2) populations of stakeholders with first hand experience of the clinical accompaniment of nursing students allocated to the rural hospital for clinical exposure and learning. The first sample consisted of thirteen (n=13) nursing students and the second sample consisted of professional nurses (n=6) directly involved in the clinical accompaniment of the nursing students. The focus of the interviews was the participants' experience of the clinical accompaniment in a specific rural hospital. Data was analyzed by means of the process of content analysis as described by Graneheim and Lundman (2004). Three (3) themes and eight (8) subthemes emerged from the data collected from the nursing students. The data collected from the professional nurses resulted in five (5) themes and eleven (11) subthemes. The collected data was integrated with relevant national and international literature to culminate in eight (8) conclusive statements. The conclusive statements served as basis for the proposal of guidelines to improve the clinical accompaniment of nursing students in a rural hospital and to enhance learning in the clinical practice area.

Brasher, Michael C. "Blessed are the Peacemakers: Transnational Alliance, Protective Accompaniment and the Presbyterian Church of Colombia." FIU Digital Commons, 2013. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/885.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis was to explore how Christian networks enable strategies of transnational alliance, whereby groups in different nations strive to strengthen one another’s leverage and credibility in order to resolve conflicts and elaborate new possibilities. This research does so by analyzing the case of the Presbyterian Church of Colombia (IPC). The project examines the historical development of the IPC from the initial missionary period of the 1850s until the present. Specifically, the purpose of the study was to consider how the historical struggle to articulate autonomy and equality vis-à-vis the U.S. Presbyterians (PCUSA) and paternalist models of ecclesial relations has affected recent political strategies pursued by the IPC. Despite the paternalism of the early missionary model, changing conceptions of social transformation during the 60s contributed to a shift in relations. Over time the IPC and PCUSA negotiated relationships in which groups both acknowledge a problematic history and insist upon an ethnic of partnership and respect. Today, PCUSA groups, in concert with the IPC, collaborate on a range of transnational political strategies aimed at strengthening the IPC’s leverage in local struggles for justice and peace. A review of this case suggests that long-established Christian networks may have an advantage over other civil society groups such as NGOs in facilitating strategies of transnational alliance. Although civil society organizations often have better access to important resources needed for international advocacy initiatives, Christian networks, such as the one established between the IPC and U.S. Presbyterian communities, rely on a history of negotiating power-disparity in order to elaborate relationships based on listening and partnership. Such findings prove important not only to how we conceptualize transnational alliance but also to the ways that we think about the history and future of Christian networks.

Abstract:

In a world where the economies of more countries interact with each other, many companies are depending on produc-tion, sales and R&D outside their national boundaries. In line with this, the performance of expatriates has become crucial. Foreign postings for executives are, however, costly undertak-ings for multinational corporations, especially when they fail. Hence the acculturation of an expatriate to the host country is a highly relevant topic. The research on expatriate accultura-tion to a host country has changed substantially over the past few years. Yet to date, the majority of research has been focus-ing on male expatriates. The purpose of this paper is to exam-ine whether there are any differences between male and female expatriates, and the impact of partner accompaniment on their adjustment to the host country. An exploratory multiple-case study has been made and data has been collected through a survey of the expatriates of three major multinational corpora-tions. Five propositions have been formulated and verified. The contribution of this paper is to illuminate the presumptive differences between male and female expatriation.

Dean, Paul. "Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme in Palestine and Israel (EAPPI) : a study in ecumenical theology and praxis." Thesis, King's College London (University of London), 2018. https://kclpure.kcl.ac.uk/portal/en/theses/ecumenical-accompaniment-programme-in-palestine-and-israel-eappi(e62386ff-1ec0-47ec-a5b5-a37cef59fd9d).html.

Full text
Abstract:
The place of theology within the EAPPI programme is investigated, initially noting symptoms of tensions between theology and praxis. Using the methods of historical inquiry - textual analysis, empirical data collection, biblical and theological questioning - the issue is shown to be much deeper, namely that “theology” has been compromised at source and praxis is therefore affected. The central question becomes how to restore EAPPI’s use of theology to its critical potential. Materials specific to EAPPI assist the research: World Council of Churches (WCC) and EAPPI archives; semi-structured interviews of Ecumenical Accompaniers in Hebron, Bethlehem, East Jerusalem, Jayyus, Tulkarm and Yanoun; and the researcher’s experience of serving on an EAPPI Policy Group. Christian Peacemaker Teams and Peace Brigades International have helped to shape EAPPI accompaniment. Palestine/Israel’s historical background is considered in relation to EAPPI, as well as key developments in the missiology of the WCC. EAPPI presents a stance that can be described as a secularised version of the Gospel. The many different religious framings of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict demand a theological response that requires EAPPI to have an ecumenical theology. A theological reflection chapter supplies biblical and theological reflection aiming to enhance the position of theology within EAPPI. Contextual and global theology are represented through writings of Munib Younan and Miroslav Volf. The dissertation concludes on the basis of the evidence of earlier chapters, that there is a risk to EAPPI praxis if it continues to underplay theology, neglecting a vital source of critique that is capable of shaping praxis. When partisan theology is rejected, the alternative is not “theology” that is subordinate to a pre-determined narrative, or “no theology” but an ecumenical theology that is appropriate to a conflicted, multi-faith environment. The contours of such a theology are offered.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the role of third-party nonviolent interventions as a supportive mechanism in relation to local peace-building initiatives. A framework on violence, conflict, peace, nonviolence and intervention is outlined in the theoretical chapters, to provide a basis for discussing the empirical findings of the research. Through the strategy of a case study and with a mixed-method approach of participant observations and interviews, perspectives from the context of the situation in Palestine and Israel were gathered. Five key informant interviews with former participants of third-party nonviolent interventions programmes were conducted, and during ethnographic fieldwork in Palestine and Israel, four local peace-building initiatives were studied. The findings are discussed in relation to the theoretical framework and the conclusions drawn from the discussion is that while third-party nonviolent interventions can contribute to local peace-building, it is mainly through decreasing the risk of escalation of violence in certain situations, sharing information and by supporting local peace-building initiatives. In order to be effective in this area, it is crucial that the third-party nonviolent interventions are perceptive of the local context, and reflect on the role that they play.

Abstract:

Franz Liszt was a famed composer who broadened the boundaries of piano technique in the nineteenth century. One of his more popular compositions, the Tarantella, found in his Années de pèlerinage , was published in 1861 within the collection Venezia e Napoli .1 Liszt admired melodies he heard during his travels in Switzerland and Italy and often arranged and composed from his ideas and experiences. Tarantellas were thought to be dances that were played by various musicians to influence dance and cure diseases. They are played at a quick tempo and contain a simple single melody with short repetitive patterns. The Italian-inspired Tarantella was similar to his other works in borrowing of melodies from other composers’ works. However, this piece is unusual. Although it is called a tarantella, it does not fully reflect the standard characteristics of a tarantella. Liszt’s Tarantella is a folk-like dance with a fast-upbeat tempo in a traditional Italian style, but contains a lyrical section in the second half which he called Canzona Napolitana. This is a departure from the traditional form of a tarantella. This paper discusses Franz Liszt’s compositional choices of style and organization in his Tarantella and how he altered the traditional tarantella folk-dance by including a Canzona Napolitana. Other tarantellas will be discussed to compare the similarities and differences between Liszt and other composers.

Curry, Benjamin David. "Towards a computational model of musical accompaniment : disambiguation of musical analyses by reference to performance data." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/809.

Abstract:
A goal of Artificial Intelligence is to develop computational models of what would be considered intelligent behaviour in a human. One such task is that of musical performance. This research specifically focuses on aspects of performance related to the performance of musical duets. We present the research in the context of developing a cooperative performance system that would be capable of performing a piece of music expressively alongside a human musician. In particular, we concentrate on the relationship between musical structure and performance with the aim of creating a structural interpretation of a piece of music by analysing features of the score and performance. We provide a new implementation of Lerdahl and Jackendoff’s Grouping Structure analysis which makes use of feature-category weighting factors. The multiple structures that result from this analysis are represented using a new technique for representing hierarchical structures. The representation supports a refinement process which allows the structures to be disambiguated at a later stage. We also present a novel analysis technique, based on the principle of phrase-final lengthening, to identify structural features from performance data. These structural features are used to select from the multiple possible musical structures the structure that corresponds most closely to the analysed performance. The three main contributions of this research are:1- An implementation of Lerdahl and Jackendoff’s Grouping Structure which includes feature-category weighting factors; 2- A method of storing a set of ambiguous hierarchical structures which supports gradual improvements in specificity; An analysis technique which, when applied to a musical performance, succeeds 3- in providing information to aid the disambiguation of the final musical structure. The results indicate that the approach has promise and with the incorporation of further refinements could lead to a computer-based system that could aid both musical performers and those interested in the art of musical performance.

Holgate, Gary David. "A Fragmented Parallel Stream: The Bass Lines of Eddie Gomez in the Bill Evans Trio." University of Sydney, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/5421.

Full text
Abstract:
Master of Music (Performance)
Eddie Gomez was the bassist in the Bill Evans Trio for eleven years. His contribution to the group’s sound was considerable, but while there has been some recognition of his virtuoso solos in the trio there has been little academic interest in his bass lines. This essay examines bass lines from the album Since We Met, recorded in 1974 by Evans, Gomez and drummer Marty Morell. Analysis of the bass accompaniments to the piano solos on “Since We Met” and “Time Remembered” reveals that they form a fragmented two-feel. A traditional two-feel employs two notes to emphasise the first and third beats in bar of 4/4 time. In Gomez’s bass lines these two notes are frequently replaced with short rhythmic motifs. These motifs occur in a variety of forms and at different metric displacements that alternately propel and retard the forward motion of the music. Additionally, Gomez uses a wide range of register and varied articulations to create a richly diverse bass line. The resulting effect has often been interpreted as interactive or conversational with the soloist. However there is very little interaction between the bass line and Evans’ solo. The bass line is a parallel stream to the solo that energises and colours the music.

Abstract:
This research delves into the clinical practice when its foundations, concepts and theories do not refer to the traditional spaces of treatment, as is the case with the practice of Therapeutic Acompaniment . It deals with a bibliographical research of the theoreticalpractical articulation by Brazilian researchers who write about Therapeutic Acompaniment and subsequently with a specific section of the psychoanalysis work, with the goal of assembling the theoretical product of this practice and analyzing it. The research intends to offer a view of the field showing how and at what point in history Therapeutic Acompaniment came to be, what theoretical elaborations founded its application and how psychoanalysis contributes to this work. As a consequence, the availability of the set of materials produced in this filed may contribute to the elaboration of a position or a theoretical space regarding Therapeutic Acompaniment. Therapeutic Acompaniment emerged in the mental health field at a historic moment known as the Psychiatric Reform, given that it is characterized by its affinity to insanity and by its new treatment methods. Having arised in this space, most theorizations in the field conform to the focus on psychosocial rehabilitation and psychoanalysis. According to the bibliographical material researched, it is possible to state that Therapeutic Acompaniment would be defined by a practice and not by a theoretical approach, since, strictly, there is no theorization regarding Therapeutic Acompaniment, since its authors imported concepts from different trends, with different epistemological bases. Therapeutic Acompaniment can be theoretically support from the precepts that guide the psychoanalytic clinic of psychosis, understood as a clinical practice that sustains egress and promotes circulation. Therefore Therapeutic Acompaniment provides an approximation and experimentation of social links, that is, possibilities of encounters with effects of the real. In conclusion, although Therapeutic Acompaniment is not a psychoanalytical practice, when it is used by a psychoanalyst it may find its space; it may provide support for imaginary identifications, function as secretary of the insane, and contribute to the construction of the sinthome, spaces which refer to the positions Therapeutic Acompaniment may assume during transference
