Abstract:
Objectives To examine whether medical savings accounts in China have achieved the intended goal of promoting individual savings for medical care. Method Longitudinal data were obtained from one of the first Chinese cities that implemented medical savings accounts. The sample includes 246,681 enrolees with participation of at least 10 years by the end of 2010. We conducted descriptive analyses of medical savings account balances and a series of multivariate logistic analyses of risk factors for having low medical savings account accumulation. Results Medical savings account accumulation was low, with 41% of the enrolees having a balance below the average cost per outpatient visit, and the proportion increased to 54% and 58% when the deductible for inpatient care at secondary and tertiary hospitals was used as the threshold, respectively. Factors associated with having low medical savings account accumulation include female, old age, below high school education, retired and having a lower salary. Conclusion Medical savings accounts have not achieved the intended goal of encouraging personal savings for medical care. Given the low medical savings account accumulation, China’s decision-makers need to adjust policies, especially during the current healthcare reform.

Abstract:
The paper is an attempt at contributing to the on-going debate on feminization of poverty by discussing the concept of feminization poverty in Nigeria. Women in Nigeria cannot be seen as a minority group and anything (as poverty is the case here) that is a challenges to them as a group should not be neglected as it has and will continue to have tremendous negative effects on the development of the country. Prior to this time, many poverty alleviation programs which are highlighted in the work have been initiated by several governments and they achieved some successes although to a larger extent due to poor implementation and corruption they failed as is evident in the level of poverty in Nigeria. The research elucidates the causes, effects and consequences of women's poverty in Nigeria. Some of the causes discussed include limited access to resources that help women escape from poverty; low income and work discrimination; lack of access to good health care services and socio-cultural exclusions. While some of the effects include poor health and health care access; inadequate food and poor nutrition; lack or poor quality of education; limited access to information and technological development. Several remedies such as increasing the productive capacity of women through access to Economic resources, information and technical assistance, which will increase their income and improve nutrition, education, health care and status within the household were also brought into perspective. Recommendations were made to all concerned groups - the women, men and government agencies and apparatuses, one of which includes: the availability of skill acquisition programs, which should be free and accessible for women especially those in the rural area should be organised, by the government, non-governmental agencies, and well-meaning philanthropists. It was concluded that the structure of the Nigeria society gives room for female poverty.

AbstractThis study attempts to sort out the partial and contradictory accounts of the last years and martyrdom of the prominent Twelver Shiite jurist Zayn al-Dīn al-'Āmilī (d. 965/1558), drawing on Shiite biographical works, Zayn al-Dīn's writings and the scholarly paraphernalia attached to them, Safavid chronicles, and a recently published travelogue that includes an eye-witness account of his execution in Istanbul. It argues in particular that the influential account of Zayn al-Dīn's arrest and execution included in al-Hurr al-'Āmilī's biographical work Amal al-āmil is a forgery from the late seventeenth century and should be discarded as evidence for Zayn al-Dīn's biography.

Abstract:
This article provides an account of improvisational artistry in live dance performance that construes the contribution of the dance performer as a kind of agency. Andy Clark's theory of the embodied and extended mind is used in order to consider how this account is supported by research on how a thinking-while-doing person navigates the world. I claim here that while a dance performer's improvisational artistry does include embodied and extended features that occur outside of the brain and nervous system, that this can be construed as “agency” rather than “thought.” Further I claim that trained and individual style accounts for how this agency acquires its artistic nature. This account thus contributes to the philosophy of improvisation in dance performance in a way that includes motor as well as cognized intentions.

Abstract:
Abstract Purpose Cardiovascular engineering includes flows with fluid-dynamical stresses as a parameter of interest. Mechanical stresses are high-risk factors for blood damage and can be assessed by computational fluid dynamics. By now, it is not described how to calculate an adequate scalar stress out of turbulent flow regimes when the whole share of turbulence is not resolved by the simulation method and how this impacts the stress calculation. Methods We conducted direct numerical simulations (DNS) of test cases (a turbulent channel flow and the FDA nozzle) in order to access all scales of flow movement. After validation of both DNS with literature und experimental data using magnetic resonance imaging, the mechanical stress is calculated as a baseline. Afterwards, same flows are calculated using state-of-the-art turbulence models. The stresses are computed for every result using our definition of an equivalent scalar stress, which includes the influence from respective turbulence model, by using the parameter dissipation. Afterwards, the results are compared with the baseline data. Results The results show a good agreement regarding the computed stress. Even when no turbulence is resolved by the simulation method, the results agree well with DNS data. When the influence of non-resolved motion is neglected in the stress calculation, it is underpredicted in all cases. Conclusion With the used scalar stress formulation, it is possible to include information about the turbulence of the flow into the mechanical stress calculation even when the used simulation method does not resolve any turbulence.

Abstract:
In this paper we outline a theory of human deontology from a naturalistic perspective. In doing so we aim to explain how human beings deal with deontic relations (like obligations and rights) thanks to a specialised psychological infrastructure, which evolved to support human cooperation. This infrastructure includes a repertoire of emotions that play a crucial role in evaluating the conformity of actions relative to a deontic relation, in displaying an agent’s attitude toward their own actions or those of their deontic partners, and in motivating suitable behavioural responses. Finally we discuss the special case of interpersonal deontology, analysing its properties and relating it to Gilbert’s concept of joint commitment.

Abstract:
In this work, we deal an elasticity model in 2D and 3D dimension for deformation under constraint by taking into account the direction of the deformation displacement. This work is a result of an article [A. Azzayani et al., Br. J. Math. Comput. Sci. (2016)] in which we use the same mathematical model by fixing the fiber orientation. Then, if we considered the case of eignvalue and eigenvector, and which is the case of this work, we can be able to control the deformation of the heart in the image processing. This mathematical model can be used to describe the heart deformation taking into account the orientation of the fibers for estimating global and regional parameters of the left ventricular function. In first, we start by presenting the proposed mathematical model on a domain Ω ⊂ ℝn (n = 2 or 3), and we give the existence and uniqueness of solution to the mathematical model is given (in both 2D and 3D dimension). Secondly, we give numerical simulations with FreeFem software, simulations results and comments are given in the end. In the end, we will discuss about the image treatment with this model and its feasibility to help doctors in the diagnosis of heart disease.

Abstract:
Reflective practice is about seeing yourself and your life differently. It is a method of self-appraisal that, when used in academia, has the potential to provide insights that are not always immediately apparent to the practitioner. The author of this paper shares a piece of structured reflection based on Gibbs’s (1988) framework. This personal narrative relates to a teaching session entitled, ‘Networking with Others’ that was delivered to UK and International postgraduate health care students. It is this activity that forms the basis of this reflective work. A number of educational issues are considered as the reflection unfolds, many relating to methods and modes of delivery. The final part of this paper reports on an action plan developed to improve the session. This includes the adoption of more collaborative working in order to support the student’s professional as well as academic needs. It is anticipated that this new workshop style session will improve the learning experience, and provide students with a firm base from which to grow their networking skills for the future. In addition, the plan may offer suggestions for anyone running similar sessions throughout the UK and the world.

Abstract The English auxiliaries have been a matter of dispute for decades with two opposing views: one analysis treats them as main verbs that take a VP complement; the other considers them as feature carriers. Proponents of both approaches have convincingly pointed out each other’s weaknesses without however settling the debate and without accounting for the fact that the English VP is still evolving today. The goal of this paper is to show that Construction Grammar offers a way out of the current status quo. This claim is substantiated by a computational formalization of the English verb phrase in Fluid Construction Grammar that includes a bi-directional processing model for formulation and comprehension available for online testing.

The potential location can be conversely reasoned by the warning sensors and the scope can be narrowed down widely. On this basis, the distance and similarity between the veritable time difference and the numerical simulation difference are calculated and by the value we can know the site of the fire.

W. Matthews Grant's "Dual Sources Account" aims at explaining how God causes all creaturely actions while leaving them free in a robust libertarian sense. It includes an account of predestination that is supposed to allow for the possibility that some created persons ultimately spend eternity in hell. I argue here that the resources Grant provides for understanding why God might permit created persons to end up in hell are, for two different reasons, insufficient. I then provide possible solutions to these two problems, compatible with Grant's account overall, that help show why God might allow hell.

Each of us as a scientist has an academic legacy that consists of our mentors and their mentors continuing back for many generations. Here, I describe two genealogies of my own: one through my PhD advisor, H. T. (Ted) Hammel, and the other through my postdoctoral mentor, Knut Schmidt-Nielsen. Each of these pathways includes distingished scientists who were all major figures in their day. The striking aspect, however, is that of the 14 individuals discussed, including myself, 10 individuals used the technique of direct calorimetry to study metabolic heat production in humans or other animals. Indeed, the patriarchs of my PhD genealogy, Antoine Lavoisier and Pierre Simon Laplace, were the inventors of this technique and the first to use it in animal studies. Brief summaries of the major accomplishments of each my scientific ancestors are given followed by a discussion of the variety of calorimeters and the scientific studies in which they were used. Abstract:
Ankle fractures are a common injury. Assessment should include looking at the mechanism of injury, comorbidities, associated injuries, soft tissue status and neurovascular status. Emergent reduction is required for clinically deformed ankles. Investigations should include plain radiographs and a computed tomography scan for more complex injuries or those with posterior malleolus involvement. An assessment of ankle stability determines treatment, taking into account comorbidities and preoperative mobility which need special consideration. Non-operative management includes splint or cast, allowing for early weightbearing when the ankle is stable. Operative management includes open reduction and internal fixation, intramedullary nailing (of the fibula and hindfoot) and external fixation. Syndemosis stabilisation includes suture button or screw fixation. The aim of treatment is to restore ankle stability and this article explores the current evidence in best practice.

Abstract:
In this article the problem of modelling a switching process of Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors (IGBTs) in the SPICE software is considered. The new form of the considered transistor model is presented. The model includes controlled voltage and current sources, resistors and voltage sources. In the model, influence of temperature on dc and dynamic characteristics of the IGBT is taken into account. A detailed description of the dynamic part of this model is included in the article and some results of experimental verification are shown. Verification is performed for a transistor IRG4PC40UD by International Rectifier. The presented results of computations and measurements show clearly influence of temperature on on-time and off-time, and additionally switching energy losses are observed. Moreover, the results of investigations performed with the use of the new model are compared to the results of computations performed with classical models of the considered device given in the literature. It is proved that the new model makes it possible to obtain a better match to the results of measurements than the considered models described in the literature.

Abstract:
The over-representation of men and the under-representation of women in senior positions in academic institutions is a familier and deep-rooted problem. While gender inequality in Higher Education Institutions has multiple causes, recruitment and internal promotion practices are particularly potent contributors to inequality regimes. This paper contains an autoethnographic account based on my failure to secure promotion and my subsequent legal action. It offers a personalized account of the experience of gender discrimination, in order to illuminate aspects of the culture of the Higher Educational Institution that contribute to this problem, and the challenges inherent in changing it. The theoretical perspective includes notions of organizational culture as gendered, drawing on the works of Louise Morley and Georgina Waylen, Pat O’Connor, Louise Chappel and Teresa Rees, as well as Carol Agócs work on institutionalized resistance to change, and theories of hidden and invisible power. The paper is a personal narrative autoethnography with self-reflection, adopting an analytic/interpretive approach. Based on an analysis of publicly available documents, personal journaling and media material, I identify four themes; (1) Slow Fuse burning, (2) From indifference to resistance, (3) Fixing me/Fixing women, (4) Solidarity. I conclude with reflections on the importance of seeing gender inequality and discrimination when it occurs and the importance of data in creating greater transparency that facilitates ‘seeing’. I also consider the importance of female anger and the importance of female solidarity.

Abstract:
The British trustee savings banks that operated throughout the nineteenth century were designed expressly for working-class use, and solely to promote long-term saving. Despite the substantial numbers and national spread of these banks, there have been few studies of their use by savers. Their neglect as a data source is puzzling, given the extent of the surviving depositor records that provide long-run empirical data that includes savers’ identity, marital status, and occupation, as well as account balances and transactions. Our preliminary work on four banks (Limehouse, Newcastle, South Shields, and Bury) shows results of significant interest in understanding working-class financial behavior, including a substantial number of accounts opened and maintained by working-class married women, accounts opened and run by minors from earnings, and varied patterns of account usage.

In order to achieve that goal, the study presents theoretical and econometricframework for an economic model that includes the determinants of inflation wherecurrent account deficit is one of them. The study finds out that the increase in currentaccount deficit affects domestic inflation negatively in the long run. This result would beattributed to the fact that current account deficit absorbs big part of the excess in thedomestic demand, in addition to the long run flexibility of the economy to producesubstitutes for imported goods. However, in the short run, it was found that currentaccount deficit affects domestic inflation positively. It was found that for this period thereis no enough flexibility for the Jordanian economy to produce enough goods to substituteimports, which leads to inflation.

Abstract A new Computer-Aided Design approach is introduced for design of steel castings taking into account the feeding ability in sand moulds. This approach uses the geometrical modeling by a CAD-program, in which the modul “Castdesigner” is implemented, which includes the feeding models of steel castings. Furthermore, the feeding ability is guaranteed immediately during the design by an interactive geometry change of the casting cross section, so that a directional feeding of the solidifying casting from the installed risers is assured.

Abstract:
Despite growing evidence for perceptual interactions between motion and position, no unifying framework exists to account for these two key features of our visual experience. We show that percepts of both object position and motion derive from a common object-tracking system—a system that optimally integrates sensory signals with a realistic model of motion dynamics, effectively inferring their generative causes. The object-tracking model provides an excellent fit to both position and motion judgments in simple stimuli. With no changes in model parameters, the same model also accounts for subjects’ novel illusory percepts in more complex moving stimuli. The resulting framework is characterized by a strong bidirectional coupling between position and motion estimates and provides a rational, unifying account of a number of motion and position phenomena that are currently thought to arise from independent mechanisms. This includes motion-induced shifts in perceived position, perceptual slow-speed biases, slowing of motions shown in visual periphery, and the well-known curveball illusion. These results reveal that motion perception cannot be isolated from position signals. Even in the simplest displays with no changes in object position, our perception is driven by the output of an object-tracking system that rationally infers different generative causes of motion signals. Taken together, we show that object tracking plays a fundamental role in perception of visual motion and position.

Abstract:
Artistic practices in ethnological knowledge transfer can be found in the wellknown account of James Cook’s first voyage (1768–1771) by John Hawkesworth (Account of the Voyages […] in the Southern Hemisphere, 1773), which shows that such travel accounts are not only vehicles of knowledge transfer but also means of knowledge (re)construction, and at times this process of remolding knowledge extends to a rewriting that includes elements of fiction. Hence, the article will draw on the material assembled by Cook and Joseph Banks in their Endeavour Journals to identify in Hawkesworth’s examples of (ethno-aesthetic) knowledge construction and “invention.” A comparison of the diff erent types of texts is rewarding not least because Hawkesworth’s account strove to present the new knowledge to a broader audience. An identification of Hawkesworth’s departures from his sources facilitates the reading of the act of knowledge transfer as a process of knowledge transformation.

The justification I will undertake is from the perspective of Catholic natural law, that is, the strand of natural law that has been developed theoretically by Roman Catholic canonists, theologians, and philosophers since Aquinas, and affirmed by Catholic teachers as the basis for most moral obligations. Catholic natural law is, therefore, natural law as developed and understood by Catholics or others respecting Catholic traditions of inquiry. It is not, however, primarily or exclusively natural law for Catholics, since the very idea of natural law includes the conviction that it is accessible in principle to anyone.

Abstract:
In the Lysis, Socrates argues that friendship is driven by a desire to use others for one’s own gain (210b-d). Some commentators take Socrates to be speaking for Plato on this point. By contrast, I shall argue that the Lysis is a reductio ad absurdum of this instrumental account of friendship. First, three arguments in the Lysis (210c-d, 214b-215b, 216d-218a) reach counterintuitive conclusions which may be avoided by abandoning the common premise that friendship is instrumental. Second, the dramatic context includes counterexamples to the instrumental account of friendship (e.g. the two friendship trios: Lysis, Menexenus, and Socrates; Lysis, his mother, and his father). Third, Socrates distinguishes between people who are desirable because they are useful, and “true friends” who are desirable for their own sake (219c-221b). This is an explicit rejection of the instrumental account of friendship.

Abstract:
AbstractAlthough the Portuguese established contact with Thailand soon after their conquest of Melaka in 1511, it was thought that Spaniards did not go there until the disastrous expedition of Diego Belloso in 1596. However, in a little-known manuscript from about 1600 there is an account of an inadvertent visit by a small group of Spaniards in 1585, after they had been blown off course trying to return to Manila from Macao. This includes a description of Ayutthaya, presented here, together with an account of the trials and tribulations they endured in getting back to Manila. The Spaniards had gone to Macao with the Jesuit Alonso Sánchez, ostensibly to sort out a mutiny on a galleon bound for Acapulco, but Sánchez also wanted to pursue his agenda of converting China to Christianity and his reports do not mention this extraordinary adventure of some of his companions.

Full text
Abstract:
We developed a gain–loss approach to estimating the dynamics of the dead organic matter pool in northern Australian savannas consistent with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change 2006 guidance. Previously, only emissions of methane and nitrous oxide were accounted in greenhouse gas budgets. The new approach is based on a modification of the Olson fuel accumulation equation. This modification includes the mean post-fire residue and accounts for losses from both fire and decomposition and for gains from grass production, tree litter fall and the death of trees. We apply the approach to a case study in western Arnhem Land, Northern Territory, Australia, in which the fire regime has been changed and the project has achieved recognised abatement of methane and nitrous oxide emissions. The carbon sequestration in the dead organic matter is ~85 times the annual emissions abatement in this project area and when expressed as an annual rate is ~3.5 times the abatement. We also show that the emissions abatement has previously been underestimated owing to an inability to fully account for dead organic matter dynamics. Future work could refine the models of dead organic matter to include seasonal dynamics in inputs.

Abstract:
This paper provides the first monographic account of south-eastern Australian representatives of the Hapalidiaceae (Corallinales, Rhodophyta). The Hapalidiaceae includes those Corallinales whose tetrasporangia produce zonately arranged spores, and whose tetrasporangia/bisporangia are borne in conceptacles, produce apical plugs, develop beneath multiporate plates or roofs, and are not enclosed individually within calcified sporangial compartments. The Hapalidiaceae contains the subfamilies Choreonematoideae, Melobesioideae and Austrolithoideae, all formerly placed in the Corallinaceae sensu lato. The Choreonematoideae is represented in south-eastern Australia by a single species, Choreonema thuretii. The Melobesioideae is represented by five genera (Melobesia, Lithothamnion, Phymatolithon, Mesophyllum, Synarthrophyton) and eight species. Synarthrophyton pseudosorus sp. nov. is newly described. The presence of tetrasporangial conceptacles occurring in irregularly shaped dense clusters that contain both discrete conceptacles and fused groups of conceptacles delimits this species from all other species of Synarthrophyton. Morphological and anatomical accounts are provided, including keys, information on distribution, habitat and nomenclature. Brief biogeographic comparisons between south-eastern Australia and neighbouring regions are also made.

Abstract:
Thoracic injuries account for 25% of all civilian deaths. Blunt force injuries are a subset of thoracic injuries and include injuries of the tracheobronchial tree, pleural space, and lung parenchyma. Early identification of these injuries during initial assessment and resuscitation is essential to reduce associated morbidity and mortality rates. Management of airway injuries includes definitive airway control with identification and repair of tracheobronchial injuries. Management of pneumothorax and hemothorax includes pleural space drainage and control of ongoing hemorrhage, along with monitoring for complications such as empyema and chylothorax. Injuries of the lung parenchyma, such as pulmonary contusion, may require support of oxygenation and ventilation through both conventional and nonconventional mechanical ventilation strategies. General strategies to improve pulmonary function and gas exchange include balanced fluid resuscitation to targeted volume-based resuscitation end points, positioning therapy, and pain management.

Abstract:
The Guatemalan pediatric population is affected by a high incidence of poverty and violence. The previous literature showed that these experiences may ultimately impact cognitive performance. The aim of this article is to update the standardized scores for ten neuropsychological tests commonly used in Guatemala considering vulnerability. A total of 347 healthy children and adolescents from 6 to 17 years of age (M = 10.83, SD = 3) were assessed, controlling for intelligence, mental health and neuropsychological history. The standard scores were created using multiple linear regression and standard deviations from residual values. The predictors included were the following: age, age squared (age2), mean parental education (MPE), mean parental education squared (MPE2), gender, and vulnerability, as well as their interaction. The vulnerability status was significant in the scores for language, attention and executive functions. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study that includes the condition of vulnerability in the calculation of neuropsychological standard scores. The utility of this update is to help in the early detection of special needs in this disadvantaged population, promoting more accurate interventions in order to alleviate the negative effects that living in vulnerable conditions has on children and adolescents.
