Wing, Eliya. "Numerical simulation of ice accretion on 3-D rotor blades." Thesis, Georgia Institute of Technology, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/51833.

Abstract:
Rotorcraft vehicles are highly sensitive to ice accretion. When ice forms on helicopter rotor blades, performance degradation ensues due to a loss of lift and rise in drag. The presence of ice increases torque, power required, and leads to rotor vibrations. Due to these undesirable changes in the vehicle's performance, the FAA requires intensive certification to determine the helicopter’s airworthiness in icing conditions. Since flight tests and icing tunnel tests are very expensive and cannot simulate all conditions required for certification, it is becoming necessary to use computational sol

Abstract:
I have carried out three-dimensional numerical simulations of self-gravitating discs to determine under what circumstances they fragment to form bound clumps that may grow into giant planets. Through radiation hydrodynamical simulations using a Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics code, I find that the disc opacity plays a vital role in determining whether a disc fragments. Specifically, opacities that are smaller than interstellar Rosseland mean values promote fragmentation (even at small radii, R < 25AU) since low opacities allow a disc to cool quickly. This may occur if a disc has a low metal

"Computer simulation of the Rice University gamma ray telescope." Thesis, 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/1911/13316.

Full text
Abstract:
Calculations have been made of the new Rice University gamma ray astronomical telescope, over the energy interval 0.1 MeV-5.0MeV. A computer program, ACCEPT, was used and simulations performed on the Rice University's AS-9000 mainframe. For gamma ray fluxes at 3.5 g cm$\sp{-2}$ atmospheric depth over Palestine, Texas, efficiency curves for the principal detector have been obtained. Energy deposition profiles have been calculated and compared to previous simulations and observations. The study shows the simulation code ACCEPT to be more machine dependent than previously believed.

Abstract:
The role of radiative cooling plays an important role in the formation of structures in collapsing gas. In this dissertation I examine the impact of cooling in two formation scenarios: first, the role of H2 cooling in collapsing gas in primordial dark matter halos in the possible formation of supermassive black holes; second, low metallicity cooling in collapsing clouds and its possible role in explaining low-metallicity globular clusters. Further, I introduce a new hydrodynamics code, with a design guided by current software principles. In chapter 2, I examined the proposed mechanism to expla

Abstract:
The halos of galaxies - consisting of gas, stars, and satellite galaxies - are formed and shaped by the most fundamental processes: hierarchical merging and the flow of gas into and out of galaxies. While these processes are hard to disentangle, metals are tied to the gas that fuels star formation and entrained in the wind that the deaths of these stars generate. As such, they can act as important indicators of the star formation, the chemical enrichment, and the outflow histories of galaxies. Thus, this thesis aims to take advantage of such metal signatures in the stars and gas to place obse

Abstract:
The atomic physics relevant to gaseous nebulae is critically examined using modelling software with particular emphasis on radio recombination lines (RRLs). The theoretical spectral line intensities can be deduced if we know the population structure of the bound electrons in the gas under non-thermal equilibrium conditions. The population structure of hydrogen is solved for various environments using a capture-collision-cascade model that incorporates an ambient radiation eld. The validity of assuming Case B (Baker & Menzel, 1938) for nebulae is investigated. It is known that Case B is

Stars, and collections of stars, encode rich signatures of stellar physics and galaxy evolution. With properties influenced by both their environment and intrinsic nature, stars retain information about astrophysical phenomena that are not otherwise directly observable. <div>Advancements in virtual reality (VR) technologies have led to overwhelming critique and acclaim in recent years. Academic researchers have already begun to take advantage of these immersive technologies across all manner of settings. Using immersive technologies, educators are able to more easily interpret complex information with students and colleagues. Despite the advantages these technologies bring, some drawbacks still remain. One particular drawback is the difficulty of engaging in immersive environments with others in a shared physical space (i.e., with a shared virtual environment
