Full textNoSQL databases are gaining popularity due to their ability to store and process large heterogeneous data sets more efficiently than relational databases. Apache Accumulo is a NoSQL database that introduced a unique information security feature—cell-level access control. We study Accumulo to examine its cell-level access control policy enforcement mechanism. We survey existing Accumulo applications, focusing on Koverse as a case study to model the interaction between Accumulo and a client application. We conclude with a discussion of potential security concerns for Accumulo applications. We argue that Accumulo’s cell-level access control can assist developers in creating a stronger information security policy, but Accumulo cannot provide security—particularly enforcement of information flow policies—on its own. Furthermore, popular patterns for interaction between Accumulo and its clients require diligence on the part of developers, which may otherwise lead to unexpected behavior that undermines system policy. We highlight some undesirable but reasonable confusions stemming from the semantic gap between cell-level and table-level policies, and between policies for end-users and Accumulo clients.

Full textThe American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) requires the adoption of Electronic Medical Records (EMRs) for seventy percent of the primary care provider population by 2014. Furthermore, by 2015 providers are expected to be utilizing EHR in compliance with “meaningful use”[28] definition or they can face financial penalties under Medicare. In addition to this momentous task, EMR data has stringent security requirements. It is largely due to these security requirements that medical information is being digitized. However, sharing to entitled information is often slow or non-existent because of information silos. Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) is an emerging information sharing standard that is designed to aid in the tearing down of these silos. The focus of this thesis is to show how FHIR can be further improved by allowing for cellular level security. Additionally, this thesis will introduce novel ways that vast amounts of FHIR resources can be stored and queried in real-time with Accumulo. It will do so by utilizing and improving on Dynamic Distributed Dimensional Data Model (D4M) [9] Schema to better allow for “real-time” REST queries of FHIR compliant data. Pagination is necessary for it to remain a real-time system since some queries can have millions or even billions of positive hits. To satisfy this requirement a new approach to Accumulo pagination is laid out that increases performance, flexibility and control. All tests are performed against a M4.2xlarge Amazon Machine Image.

Full textThis thesis focuses on the study and the development of a software tool for the simulation of production, storage and exchange of electric energy in home automation systems. Basic concepts of home automation systems are introduced and the main technologies for energy production and storage are presented in order to describe the application context and the premises of the work. The research on simulation tools for home automation carried on at the LabMACS (Laboratory of Modeling, Analysis and Control of Discrete Systems) of Università Politecnica delle Marche in recent years is reviewed in the light of the evolving legislation on the market of electric energy and of the current technology. In particular, it is shown how the interest on self-consumption and autonomy has grown to become a key factor in the design and management of home energy systems. The developed simulation tool, called EPSS (Energy Production and Storage Simulator), uses a Petri Net to represents components of the system and to model power production and power exchange between them. The chosen approach results simple and e cient both from the point of view of modeling and from that of defining and implementing energy management policies. Furthermore, it facilitates the integration of components of various types for production and storage of electric and thermal energy. Structure and operation of the EPSS are described in details and performances are analyzed by comparison with real system in various situations. Results show the reliability of the EPSS as a tool for design and sizing home automation systems to satisfy user’s requirements and to achieve satisfactory levels of self-consumption and autonomy. Future developments of this work include the construction of appropriate user interfaces, the study of additional components and the integration of the EPSS into loads control and management systems in order to optimize the demand-response behavior

Full text"the first place through inflationary financing. In subsequent rounds of the operation of the multiplier, however, the effects would be similar on the whole to those obtaining from domestically financed investment. Perhaps a brief mention should be made of the probable operation of a negative multiplier as well. The decline in the Handicrafts & Small Scale Industrial sector can partly be attributed to the uncertainties and restrictions imposed upon the private sector by the Revolution, but it could certainly also be attributed in part to the decline in demand that the inflationary process would have caused, as higher proportions of family budgets were being diverted to those producing and/or trading in foodstuffs. Finally, our analysis based on n and y runs in terms of national aggregates, although clearly the model underlying it is one involving inter-sectoral transfers of marketed surplus from agriculture to non-agriculture. This aggregation conceals some important aspects of the process. First, it ignores the possibility of non-inflationary productive investments based on rural labour accumu-lation, and thereby exaggerates the strategic necessity of extracting and transferring rural surplus product. Second, it ignores the fact that the rural sector is largely insulated from the urban food market, since it has the first claim to foodgrain consumption. The implication follows that the urban areas are thus rendered even more vulnerable to variations in agricultural output and marketed product. This fact was starkly highlighted by the recent Ethiopian experience, and the extreme consequences for the urban population form the subject matter of the following section which documents the im-poverishment of an increasing proportion of urban households."
