Abstract:

Abstract:

Sithole, Tendayi. "Achille Mbembe : subject, subjection, and subjectivity." Thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/14323.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the political thought of Achille Mbembe. It deploys decolonial critical analysis to unmask traces of coloniality with regard to the African existential conditions foregrounded in the conception of the African subject, its subjection, and subjectivity. The theoretical foundation of this thesis is decolonial epistemic perspective—the epistemic intervention that serves as a lens to understand Mbembe’s work and—that is the theoretical foundation outside the Euro-North American “mainstream” canon foregrounded in coloniality. Decolonial epistemic perspective in this thesis is deployed to expose three kinds of coloniality in Mbembe’s work, namely: coloniality of power, coloniality of knowledge and coloniality of being. The thrust of this thesis is that Mbembe’s political thought is inadequate for the understanding of the African existential condition in that it does not fully take coloniality into account. In order to acknowledge the existence of coloniality through decolonial critical analysis, the political thought of Mbembe is examined in relation to modes of self-writing, power in the postcolony, the politics of violence in Africa, Frantz Fanon’s political thought, and the idea of South Africa as major themes undertaken in this thesis. Decolonial critical analysis deals with foundational questions that have relevance to the existential condition of the African subject and the manner in which such an existential crisis can be brought to an end. These foundational questions confront issues like—who is speaking or writing, from where, for whom and why? This thesis reveals that Mbembe is writing and thinking Africa from outside the problematic ontology of the African subject and, as such, Mbembe precludes any form of African subjectivity that challenges the Euro-North American canon. This then reveals that Mbembe is not critical of coloniality and this has the implications in that subjection is left on the wayside and not accounted for. Having explored the genealogy, trajectory and horisons of decolonial critical analysis to understand the political thought of Mbembe, this thesis highlights that it is essential to take a detour through the shifting of the geography of reason. Herein lies the originality of this thesis, and it is here that Africa is thought from within a standpoint of decolonial critical analysis and not Africa that is thought from the Euro-North American canon. Therefore, the shifting of the geography of reason is necessary for the authorisation of the subjectivity of the African subject in order to combat subjection.

Abstract:
This research transfigures in the field of “ postcolony ” (Achille Mbembe, 2001) ; an imperial situation that occurs in countries that were once destroyed by the ancient colonization and that keep its traces and bear its heritage. The novels of our study are as follows : Balbala (2002) by Abdourahman A. Waberi, Le bourreau (2004) by Séverin Cécile Abega, La grande mêlée (2011) by Michel Tremblay and Mãn (2013) by Kim Thúy. Indeed, we compare and would like to know why and how Africa, Canada and Vietnam may have a postcolony haloed by neo-colonialism. In addressing this issue, all the novels of our study converge to say that Colonizers succeeded to turn the suns of independence and decolonization into murderous suns, the vicious peppers into harmless flowers so as not to oppose the direction of the colonial fibres and transfer colonization to postcolony. Therefore, the fight remains perpetual between the postcolonial darkness and the anti-postcolonial light

Krawitz, Lilian. "South africa's axial religious transformation: the utilization of the axial Hebrew prophets' response models in the revision of South Africa's maladaptive pre-axial response models." Diss., 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/2168.

Abstract:
This study searches for the origin and history of the concept of individual accountability and the reason for its absence in the African Traditional Religion framework. This search begins in the Axial Age (800-200 BCE), and discusses ancient Israel's Axial Age and its Axial Hebrew prophets' response models. The study tracks the introduction of Axial ideals to South Africa, via Christianity since 1826, and examines the Xhosa prophets' response models to their Axial context. The Social Christians attempts to impart Axial ideals during the period of segregation and the Tuskegeean response model are also examined. The similarities between ancient Israel and South Africa as revealed by Biblical archaeology, underlie this study's call for the utilisation of the power of religions such as Christianity, and of South Africa's religious elite, to rapidly alter current maladaptive beliefs within the African Traditional religious framework that impedes Africans' ability to adopt individual accountability.

Abstract:
The Cameroon-born political theorist Achille Mbembe has produced a body of work that deeply engages with Christianity: the role of Christianity in postcolonial and particularly African contexts, the role of Christianity in securing Europe’s self-image, and the role of Christian ideas in providing a framework for postcolonial resistance. In Mbembe’s most recent work, he has turned his critical apparatus from postcolonial contexts to blackness more generally, engaging with questions of race and religion across Africa and the diaspora. This chapter argues that Mbembe’s work offers promising resources for black theology, but it also has crippling limitations because of underlying secularist assumptions. Mbembe helpfully diagnoses postcolonial and black contexts as suffering from what is effectively theological heresy: a distorted relationship with ultimate authority brought about by colonialism and racialization. While Mbembe’s diagnosis deeply engages with theology, his prescription is secularist, embracing plurality that black experience is said to model. The chapter juxtaposes Mbembe’s reflections on colonial and racializing heresy with theologian John Milbank’s reflections on secularist heresy to explore the limitations and possibilities of each.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on the different tactics Emily Jacir uses in her varied art practice to trouble narratives of the Palestinian occupation. It tracks through notable artworks including Where We Come From (2001–03), Sexy Semite (2002), and ex libris (2010–12), and attempts by Jacir to reveal the discursive frameworks which normalise the atrocities in Palestine. Thinking with scholars including Achille Mbembe and Judith Butler, this chapter traces the strategies the artist uses to communicate the conflict outside of these discursive traps that continually interpret and produce the oppressive reality in Palestine. And, it follows Jacir in asking, what would it take to remake (transform) the sensibility of the conflict in Palestine?

Abstract:
This chapter returns to a puzzle running through the book, namely how to account for the ways in which queerness mutates to become a metonym for imperialism/anti-imperialism, paganism/Christianity, whiteness, embourgeoisement, and backwardness in different institutional configurations of power. Using Hortense Spillers’s historically informed notion of the ‘grammar’ of a state, the chapter argues that these mutations result from a refraction of queerness through the foundational grammar of the institutions being investigated in each chapter. Both states and their antagonists speak in these grammars, making their engagements what Achille Mbembe calls ‘convivial’. The chapter illustrates this with reference to the politics of Uganda. It then summarises its claims about the global frictions surrounding the Anti Homosexuality Act, reiterating the ways in which these frictions illustrate the mutual constitution of core and periphery. It suggests that this insight offers a possible strategy for disorienting orientalism

Abstract:
In this chapter I will focus on the challenge of exhibiting ethnographic objects in their negative essence. This implies understanding them not as representations of other cultures or societies, but as traces of a traumatic event. By adopting this alternative understanding, I hope to avoid the pitfalls of including these objects in categories such as ‘African Art’ or ‘Lazarim masks’ (a specific kind of Heritage). Throughout this chapter I draw from the works of Achille Mbembe, Jean-François Lyotard and Yuk Hui, and get inspiration from Japanese Zen critiques of western representational metaphysics. To face the aesthetic challenge at hands, I will begin by analysing the traumatic events at the origin of both categories, explaining why I opted to work them together and then mapping their common genealogy. Afterwards, I will briefly explore their historical connections. As a conclusion, I will propose an ‘anti-heritage’ take on the exhibition of Lazarim masks’ that can inspire decolonized displays of ‘African Art’.
