Abstract:
Signal transduction via the phosphoinositide (PI) second messenger system has key roles in the development and plasticity of the neocortex. The present study localized PI responses to individual cortical layers in slices of developing rat somatosensory cortex. The acetylcholine agonist carbachol and the glutamate agonist trans-1-amino-1,3-cyclopentanedicarboxylic acid (ACPD) were used to stimulate PI turnover. The PI responses were compared to the distribution of the corresponding PI-linked receptors in order to investigate the regional ontogeny of PI coupling to receptors in relation to neura

An antisense transgenic approach was taken in order to assess the importance of P-ketoacyl-ACP- Synthase III (KAS III) in regulation and initiation of de novo fatty acid synthesis in planta. The transgenic plants were generated in order to show whether alternative pathways exist to initiate fatty acid synthesis if the most direct route is lost. In order to develop such a study, a KAS III cDNA clone of 1622bp was isolated from a Brassica napus embryo library. Abstract In eukaryotic cells, fatty acids are mainly synthesized in the cytoplasm, but recently, in yeast and in humans, the ability to synthesize fatty acids has been characterized in mitochondria. This mitochondrial pathway is similar to bacterial type II fatty acid synthesis (FAS). The main feature of mitochondrial FAS in yeast is the respiratory deficient phenotype and loss of cytochromes when any of genes encoding enzymes for mitochondrial FAS is deleted. Mitochondrial FAS has been demonstrated to have an important role in lipoic acid production, namely it synthesizes octanoyl-ACP, which

The cotton FatB mRNA transcript abundance also peaked during this developmental stage, paralleling the profiles of PATE enzyme activity and seed oil accumulation. It uncovers the comprehensive investigation into monastic history and hagiography (with special emphasis on St Basil) that Wordsworth engaged in between 1807 and 1810, showing that the type of silence he valued came from the monastic tradition. I trace Wordsworth’s material commitment to the power of silence through his use of hermit figures and his habit of visiting ruined monasteries. Abstract:
The aim of the study was to determine the efficiency with which the carbon skeletons of essential amino acids are utilised by the pig when they are limiting in its diet. This requires the oxidation rate of an amino acid to be measured accurately using a tracer labelled with an isotope of carbon or hydrogen. The use of carbon labelled tracers requires the animal to be enclosed in a sealed chamber for the collection of CO2; to avoid this the use of [3H]-labelled tracers was investigated. The oxidation rates of [14C]-labelled tracers when the tracee was limiting a

Abstract:
This thesis describes the use of Brønsted acid catalysis to promote 6-exo-trig cyclisations in the synthesis of N-heterocyclic compounds. In Chapter one, a general overview of alkaloid structures is given, together with a number of general ways for their synthesis, with a particular focus on the Bischler-Napieralski and Pictet-Spengler methods. Hydroamination as a synthetic method is then briefly reviewed to set into context the present project to develop and optimize an acid-catalysed hydroamination method as an alternative protocol to the Picted-Spengler reaction. Chapter two describes diffe
