Abstract:
The main priority of the audit industry is to maintain and improve audit quality. While audit quality has been an important topic in both accounting academia and practice, there is still a lack of understanding of what drives audit quality. Given that people are the most valuable asset an audit firm has, we focus on examining the labor inputs as a driver of audit quality. Specifically, we argue that a key threat for audit quality that so far has been largely neglected is the loss of talent across the hierarchy. A well-known problem for audit firms is that they invest enormous resources in new professionals only to have many with talent leave (Patten, 1995; Vera-Muñoz, Ho & Chow, 2006; ACCA & ACRA, 2012). A recent survey by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants finds that only about 38% are satisfied with their career and only 35% plan to stay beyond three years, with no significant differences across Big 4 and midtier firms (ACCA and ACRA, 2012).

Abstract:
Within a cooperation project coordinated by the Association for Rural Cooperation in Africa and Latin America (ACRA) Foundation, water supplies were sampled across the villages of the Logone valley (Chad-Cameroon) mostly from boreholes, open wells, rivers and lakes as well as from some piped water. Microbiological analyses and sanitary inspections were carried out at each source. The microbiological quality was determined by analysis of indicators of faecal contamination, Escherichia coli, Enterococci and Salmonellae, using the membrane filtration method. Sanitary inspections were done using WHO query forms. The assessment confirmed that there are several parameters of health concern in the studied area; bacteria of faecal origins are the most significant. Furthermore, this study demonstrated that Joint Monitoring Programme (JMP) classification and E. coli measurement are not sufficient to state water safety. In fact, in the studied area, JMP defined ‘improved sources’ may provide unsafe water depending on their structure and sources without E. coli may have Enterococci and Salmonellae. Sanitary inspections also revealed high health risks for some boreholes. In other cases, sources with low sanitary risk and no E. coli were contaminated by Enterococci and Salmonellae. Better management and protection of the sources, hygiene improvement and domestic water treatment before consumption are possible solutions to reduce health risks in the Logone valley.

Abstract:
The issue of project failure is alarming in Ghana and this experience has persisted for a long time. However, some projects undertaken by private organizations are able to chalk successes more often. This study therefore examines the causes of low success rate of project completion in both the public and private sectors in Ghana, study area of Greater Accra Region. The research intends to analyze how the setting of project goals, project scope, project budget, monitoring and feedback, meeting stakeholders’ expectations and project management practice influence completion of projects in both public and private sectors. Both qualitative and quantitative techniques were used for collecting and analyzing the data. The stratified sampling technique was employed and out a total of 200 questionnaires administered to respondents. 158 questionnaires representing 79% were retrieved. Regression and correlation analysis were used in analyzing the data collected, based upon which conclusions were drawn. The findings of the research were that setting project goals, monitoring and feedback and project management practice are the most influential factors in successful completion of projects in both sectors. The study has made recommendations in the article to guide project implementation Key Words: Project Management, Success factors, Project goals, Project budget, Monitoring and Feedback

Abstract:
Abstract Anterior communicating artery (ACoA) aneurysms can orient rostrally into the interhemispheric fissure or caudally into the optic chiasm. The majority of these aneurysms project into the interhemispheric fissure. This patient had an ACoA aneurysm with a multilobulated appearance, and the primary lobe projected into the interhemispheric fissure. The cisterns were opened sharply via an orbitozygomatic approach to permit proximal, distal, and neck control. A permanent clip was applied across the aneurysm neck and on a small contralateral aneurysm. Postoperative imaging confirmed complete aneurysm occlusion. The patient gave informed consent for surgery and video recording. Institutional review board approval was deemed unnecessary. Abstract:
Purpose The inaccuracy of preliminary estimates sometimes results in wasted development effort if the project is abandoned. To curb this menace, this study aims to assess the different measures to improve the accuracy of road project estimates. Design/methodology/approach Quantitative research design was used for this study, and questionnaire was designed to retrieve data from the target population. Engineers and quantity surveyors in Accra, Ghana formed the target population and were contacted by using an e-questionnaire through their professional bodies owing to location constraints. Descriptive and exploratory factor analyses were used in analysing the retrieved data. Mann–Whitney U non-parametric test was also used to compare the opinions of the respondents. Findings The study revealed that factors categorised as due diligence by estimator should be given more attention for accuracy of estimates to be improved. Research limitations/implications This study was limited to Accra, Ghana owing to time and distance constraint. Practical implications Proper consideration must be given to preliminary site investigation when preparing the estimates for road projects. This will provide the estimator with information on the physical features of the project environment. Originality/value Defined clusters of measures to improve estimate accuracy as highlighted in this study rather than merely ranked variables which are done by previous research studies will set the tone and provide insights for effective stakeholders’ actions. The study also bridges the gap between theory and practice by outlining how the findings can be implemented practically to achieve more accurate preliminary estimate for road projects. With efforts aligned with the core characteristics of each cluster, accuracy can be improved.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the critical success factors (CSFs) for effective project stakeholder management at the local government level in Ghana. Design/methodology/approach The study used data from questionnaires administered to project stakeholders for identifying and ranking CSFs. Findings The study identified the top five CSFs for stakeholder management at the local government level in Ghana to be: communicating with and engaging stakeholders; identifying stakeholders properly; formulating a clear project mission statement; keeping and promoting good relationships; and analyzing stakeholder conflicts and coalitions. Research limitations/implications Generalization of the findings should be done with caution since the scope of data collection was limited to district assemblies in the Greater Accra region of Ghana. Nevertheless the results of the study are, however, useful and indicative and can lend direction to future research. Practical implications This paper has contributed to the growing body of knowledge related to CSFs for local government projects. The results should help understand factors which are of priority to stakeholders when assessing their involvement in projects. Further, the findings could form the basis for competency development of local government personnel in specific areas where improvements are required. Originality/value The paper identified CSFs for effective project stakeholder management at the local level. Most studies on critical factors in project environments have focused on CSFs and project success and thus this study delves into an area which has not received much attention in the literature.

Abstract:

Conditions of climate change are increasingly affecting projects, especially Agriculture projects, across the world. In this situation, climate change could pose a major risk factor in sectors such as the Agriculture sector. This paper empirically examines climate change indicators as a correlated factor of traditional risk factors. A self-reported questionnaire was used to collect data from 265 farmers affiliated to manufacturing organizations in Accra. Factor Analysis (Principal Components) and Pearson’s correlation test were used to present findings. We found that all indicators of the traditional and climate change factor produced a communality value of not less than 0.50. Moreover the climatic factor significantly correlates with the traditional factors at 5% significance level. It is therefore concluded that climate change is an emerging component of project risks.

Abstract:

Abstract:
A disease is considered rare when affecting less than 1/2,000 individuals. Currently, there are more than 8,000 rare disseases of which approximately 80% are of genetic origin. Among them, 3,000 are developmental anomalies (DA). Deployment of exome sequencing (ES) led to identify many different genes associated to rare or ultra-rare diseases. However, some patients remain without any explanation about the genetic cause of their pathology. Several reasons contribute to the limitation of ES but genome sequencing (GS) is expected to overcome them. We have performed various strategies for ES before undertaking GS in patients remaining undiagnosed at the molecular level. In a series of 70 patients without diagnosis after solo-ES, trio analysis allowed to identify candidate variants in 18/70 patients (26%), including 11 genes newly involved in human disorders (including IRF2BPL). We then evaluated the interest of a parental pool approach. In 57 patients with negative solo ES, retrospective parental pool analysis allowed to identify causal variants in 12 patients (21%). In 122 patients with prospective analysis, first-step parental pool ES allowed to identify causal variants in 40 patients (33%). Then, 36 patients with no molecular diagnosis after array-CGH and trio-ES benefited from trio-GS. In 11/36 patients (31%), 7 SNVs and 4 SVs were considered pathogenic. Therefore, a first approach with trio-ES is effective but expansive because of the additional costs of parental sequencing. Deployment of parental pool sequencing seems to represent an interesting alternative since it obtained a retrospective and prospective diagnostic rate of 21% and 33% respectively. GS identified pathogenic events in 11/36 patients (31%) including 4 SVs. In patients with AD, analysis of GS data focused on exonic variants and SVs is interesting for identifying new molecular causes and appears suitable for diagnostic purposes

Anchored in the speech of the "environmental " ethics and of the " maintainable " development, a variety of international agencies settled in the Amazonian with the objective of contributing, starting from projects of philanthropic " stamp ", in the development of communities extrativistas. In local level, they create spaces of electric outlet of decision that, a priori, they place the affected communities as main actors in the implantation of autonomous and endogenous " models " of development. Analyzing the community participation in the Programa Biodiversidade Brasil-It?lia / I Project Cazumb?-Iracema (Acre) starting from the operacionaliza??o of indicators of democratic governan?a, we identified strong evidences that the democratic participation of the community local leaderships in the centers decis?rios of the Programa Biodiversidade Brasil-It?lia it is only part of your rhetoric. The conclusion the one that we arrived is that, in the ambit of the Program, the practice of the democratic governan?a doesn't exist. The research has as study area the Reserva Extrativista Cazumb?-Iracema, located in the municipal districts of Sena Madureira and Manuel Urbano, State of Acre.

Abstract:
AbstractPoor municipal solid waste management continues to be a daunting issue for municipal authorities in Ghana. Major cities generate 2000 tonnes of mixed municipal waste per day, of which about 80% is collected and disposed of at open dump sites and/or at the limited number of landfills available. About 60% of this waste is organic. The Utilization of Organic Waste to Improve Agricultural Productivity (UOWIAP) project sought to co-create knowledge through a private-public engagement for the development of organic waste value chain opportunities to sustainably manage municipal organic waste and, at the same time, improve urban farm soils and increase food productivity in the Ga-West Municipal Assembly in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana. Through the project, identified key stakeholders in the waste and agricultural sectors, such as market traders, informal waste collectors, unemployed persons, farmers, landscapers, media, agricultural extension officers, Municipal Assembly officers and the general public, were engaged and made aware of sustainable organic waste management processes, including organic waste segregation from source, collection and compost production. Four formal markets were selected for the piloting of organic waste segregation from source. Interested persons were trained in organic waste collection, compost production and entrepreneurship. The lessons learned draw attention to the need for a massive effort to generate demand for compost use as this will invariably drive removal of organic waste from the unsorted waste stream.

Abstract:
The Arwarbukarl Cultural Resources Association (ACRA)1 is a leading indigenous cultural representation and coordination body in the Hunter Valley region of New South Wales, Australia. A particular focus of ACRA is language revitalisation — made more difficult since only a smattering of documentary evidence of the language exists from the 1830s. In 2005, the number of individuals involved in learning the Arwarbukarl language was 20. While indigenous language documentation and revitalisation efforts are by no means unique to the Arwarbukarl context, this particular indigenous community has made significant progress in the development of software tools for language analysis. Here we briefly consider a number of the important aspects (technological, functional, cultural and social) that have contributed to the success of this project.

Abstract:
Abstract.—In October 1989, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (MNDNR) treated 1,266-acre Knife Lake and 70 miles of the Knife River system above the lake with a synergized rotenone concentrate formulation to eliminate the carp Cyprinus carpio population. This was a controversial project from initial planning through treatment, and required a lengthy mitigation process. Issues, such as environmental contamination, damage to endangered species, reduced lake-based recreation and economic loss, project cost, chemical toxicity, effects on nontarget organisms, and damage to cultural resources, were raised initially by two people in opposition. It required 18 months and the preparation of an Environmental Assessment Worksheet to mitigate or address these concerns. The mitigation process involved several MNDNR disciplines, various other units of government, and a large sportsmen’s organization. Because of the lengthy mitigation process, the cost increased from the planned $119,150 to $350,000. The results of the treatment were total removal of rough fish, improvements in water quality, reestablishment of aquatic macrophytes, and successful reintroduction of game fish. Walleye Stizostedion vitreum are again successfully spawning in the Knife River and numbers have greatly increased. Carp have not appeared in the watershed through 2000 and most of the pre-treatment fish assemblage has been reestablished. In a debriefing meeting following this project, MNDNR managers decided to take a pro-active approach to informing the public as a policy for future projects.

Abstract:
Abstract.-New York’s involvement in urban fisheries can be traced back to 1978 when a two-year demonstration project was initiated in New York City and other urban areas in the state. Unfortunately, the program failed to consider the inherent differences between metropolitan New York and the Midwest in terms of what the public expectations were of such a program. While the St. Louis program was achieving use rates of over 10,000 h/acre, the New York program was only achieving use rates of 49-2,176 h/acre annually, resulting in its demise in 1980. In 1992, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation began a new community fishing initiative in Nassau County (Long Island). This initiative used traditional and innovative strategies to encourage local governments to work to improve the County’s freshwater resources, encourage individuals to try the sport of fishing, better manage existing fish populations, and enhance existing fishing opportunities through a fall trout stocking program. These efforts contributed to an 85% to 162% increase in angler use of individual ponds and a 111% increase in the number of angler-days expended in Nassau County.

Abstract:
This chapter describes the incidence, prevalence, and mortality of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in adult populations around the world. Studies can only be compared if they have used the same case definition. The characteristics of the 1987 American College of Rheumatology (ACR) and the 2010 ACR/European League against Rheumatism (EULAR) classification criteria sets are discussed. In recent times several epidemiological studies have been set in large healthcare databases and have used physician diagnosis together with disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARD) prescription as the case definition. Most incidence and prevalence data on RA come from North America and Europe. Considerable insight into the relative frequency of RA has come from modelling studies in the Global Burden of Disease project 2010. The occurrence of RA is highest in the Pima and some other Native American groups; and lowest in low- and middle-income countries of Africa, South and East Asia, and the Middle East. The mortality of RA is increased relative to the general population. The mortality is falling with time, but in parallel with falls in the general population.

Educational Design-Build (EDB) has exploded in popularity over the last twenty years especially since it was reinvigorated by Samuel Mockbee’s Rural Studio at Auburn University in 1994. Although they may be unique to many practicing architects today (who often say “I wish I had a project I actually got to build in School”), EDB programs and projects are found at over 2/3rd’s of the 154 schools of architecture in North America today. These projects and experiences have come to be expected by today’s students who want to be involved from the initial conceptual design to installing the kitchen sink. EDB at its best, combine’s civic-minded, design education with project-based real-life experiences.

Abstract:
Over drinks and hors d’oeuvres at the 107th Annual ACSA conference in Pittsburgh, an interesting conversation emerged among several young faculty members who teach at different public institutions. While reflecting on presentations of design projects each had seen earlier in the day, a common recurring question emerged: “What did it cost?” While each presentation had beautifully articulated the formal, aesthetic or material ambitions of its project, very few mentioned how much the projects had cost. Actually, none did.

Abstract:
Academic entities have the ability to assemble resources and form ‘local labs’ able to creatively address complex technical problems. This paper describes academic partnerships with professional practice that offer responsive materials design expertise not available in many architectural firms. The following projects are funded by grants, gifts, and consultation mechanisms with architectural firms during the Request for Qualifications (RFQ) and the Request for Proposals (RFP) phase in competitive design solicitations. The RFQ and the RFP mechanisms are high-value low-risk means for architectural firms to add research and development capabilities to their project team. Example are given of two collaborative projects that have brought practice-based research to the architectural office and brought practical experience to students.

Abstract:
In 2011, 15 families of the Burmese refugee community on Buffalo’s Westside collectively purchased a vacant house in Buffalo at 349 Plymouth Ave. They wanted to convert the house to a Buddhist temple and residence for three monks. ‘Temple in a House’ is an adaptive project designed in collaboration with local architect and artist Dennis Maher (University at Buffalo), which presented a significant challenge: that of trying to reconcile a very radical change of program, use, and cultural references. Beyond the project’s unique socio-economic characteristics pertaining to Buffalo, this project has global implications. Changing world demographics, as a result of different economic and migratory dynamics, are increasingly asking designers to negotiate complex cultural, social, religious, and economic systems.

Abstract:
As both a practitioners and an educators there is not a strong division between these two activities in our work. Our research is the foundation of our practice and vice-versa; our practice is a laboratory for our research. Teaching is a journey that involves the transition between both. We would like to present this project as a conversation that juxtaposes several different canonical precedents. After guiding our students in the critical use of precedents through teaching, conversations, and discussions, we asked ourselves: “how many of the decisions made originated with voices that we admire from the past?” With this question in mind we realized, through a client’s description of a commission for a private home, that several canonical projects could be directly referenced. We began the project by translating the client’s spatial desires and descriptions with regard to a specific selection of precedents. We thought that later on we could modify them to transform our commission into a unique solution.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper outlines the design and construction of the Ladakh Dental Clinic project as a case study for hybrid local imported material building practices. Referencing local vernacular types as well as comparable rapid assembly systems deployed in India and beyond for other development projects, the paper discusses opportunities and shortcomings of such building strategies. In admirably positivistic modernist spirit, modular construction is often praised as the harbinger or exporter of progress and, at times, architectural advancement. Regularly choking on its own ambitions, successful modular construction largely remains an architectural fantasy as it often struggles to overcome its totalitarian spatial tendencies and inherent inflexibility. Compared to local techniques and perhaps contradictory to its intent, modular construction has a tendency to operate top-down instead of bottom-up. The Ladakh Dental Clinic project can be characterized as a result of its contradictory constraints and multi-client requirements. Necessitating both local construction and imported modular systems due to financial limitations, sponsorship opportunities, future expandability, and a tight schedule, the clinic emerges as a strange hybrid oscillating between local (de-facto imported) Indian cast-in-place concrete construction and (imported) German prefabrication.

Abstract:
Transiency no longer appears as a condition of exception, but rather as the predominant mode of existence. The increased tension across and beyond national borders and territorial divisions has drawn the attention of designers across the globe and densified our reflections on questions of identity, equality, politics and economic exchange, expanding the reach of design from the realm of physical forms, into modes of interaction in social spaces. The project presents design outcomes from the research conducted and methods employed during the advanced architectural design studio I developed and taught at the CCNY during 2017. The studio triggered an international call for contributions and it is currently under development for a book publication that explores the concept of impermanence in global contemporary society and aims to stimulate conversations about the potential of a new public realm.

Abstract:
This project was undertaken to provide the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs National Cemetery Administration with a cultural landscape survey of Knoxville National Cemetery. The 9.8-acre cemetery is located within the city limits of Knoxville, Tennessee, and contains more than 9,000 buri-als. Knoxville National Cemetery was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on 12 September 1996, as part of a multiple-property submission for Civil War Era National Cemeteries. The National Cemetery Administration tasked the U.S. Army Engineer Re-search and Development Center-Construction Engineering Research Laboratory (ERDC-CERL) to inventory and assess the cultural landscape at Knoxville National Cemetery through creation of a landscape development context, a description of current conditions, and an analysis of changes over time to the cultural landscape. All landscape features were included in the survey because according to federal policy on National Cemeteries, all national cemetery landscape features are considered to be contributing elements.
