Abstract:
The practice of creating an acrostic to spell out the name of the author of a Hebrew liturgical poem started in the classical period (5th or 6th century). An acrostic may sometimes indicate the name of the scribe who copied the manuscript. In recent years some examples of acrostics have been discovered in the Masoretic notes accompanying ancient manuscripts of the Bible. David Lyons exposed three acrostic signatures in ms British Library Or. 4445. I have discovered two further acrostics: one in a biblical manuscript, the other on a page of a Masoretic work. The article addresses the ways in which the Masoretes create their acrostic signatures, and what we may deduce from these acrostics concerning the location of their creators and their time. The main point is that the place of the masorete of ms Or. 4445 is included in his acrostic, and has not been recognized before.

Abstract:
An interesting nomenclatural case of Hemionitis atreyu Christenhusz (in Christenhusz et al. 2018: 10) was recently considered and discussed in an earlier issue of Phytotaxa (Mosyakin 2018). That species-rank name was originally proposed as a replacement name (not as a new combination with the earliest available species epithet “acrostica”) because of the existence of a supposedly earlier name, “Hemionitis acrosticha” Noronha (1790: 18; 1827: 78). However, the latter name has never been validly published (see Mosyakin 2018), and thus, if the species earlier known mainly as Cheilanthes acrostica (Balbis 1801: 98) Todaro (1866: 215) or Pteris acrostica Balbis (1801: 98) is placed in Hemionitis Linnaeus (1753: 1077), not a replacement name but a new combination was required. That combination has been validated as Hemionitis acrostica (Balb.) Mosyakin (2018: 165).

Abstract:
The books of Proverbs and Ben Sira end with alphabetic acrostics. In my article in Revue Biblique 106 (2000), pp. 1–15, I demonstrate a second alphabetic chapter concluding the ‘Words of the Wise’ (Prov. 24.1–22). The present article reveals yet a third partial acrostic in Prov. 29.22–27 at the end of ‘The Proverbs of Solomon which the Men of Hezekiah King of Judah Copied’. The acrostic and other literary devices in this unit show it is more than a mere collection of original, independent adages. The use of alphabetic acrostics to end three of Proverbs' seven consistent collections has implications for the redaction history of the book.

Abstract:
Hellenistic and Roman acrostich inscriptions are usually full of verbal and visual clues, which point the reader in the direction of the ‘hidden message’ contained in the vertical lines of the text. The authors of such inscriptions want their audiences to appreciate the skill that has gone into their composition. There are several complementary ways in which the presence of an acrostich might be signalled to the reader or viewer and their attention directed towards it. These include direct verbal statements, or more subtle allusions, within the text of the inscription. But, even without having read its text, the viewer of an inscription containing a ‘hidden message’ is often immediately aware that some kind of wordplay is at work. Acrostichs, palindromes and various kinds of word square are all graphically striking, or their appearance may be enhanced to make them more so. Regular spacing, the repetition of the acrostich in a separate column and the use of painted or incised grids are all ways in which the layout of the text on the stone can invite the viewer to play a word game. In some cases, as I will argue in this paper, acrostich makers envisaged—even intended—the participants in this game to include the illiterate as well as the literate.

Abstract:
Hunters of acrostics have had little luck with Horace. Despite his manifest love of complex wordplay, virtuoso metrical tricks and even alphabet games, acrostics seem largely absent from Horace's poetry. The few that have been sniffed out in recent years are, with one notable exception, either fractured and incomplete—the postulated PINN- in Carm. 4.2.1–4 (pinnis? Pindarus?)—or disappointingly low-stakes; suggestions of acrostics are largely confined to the Odes alone. Besides diverging from the long-standing Roman obsession with literary acrostics, Horace's apparent lack of interest is especially surprising given that Virgil, his contemporary, friend and ‘poetic pace-maker’, was at the time conducting what seems to be a systematic adaptation of Hellenistic acrostic-poetics into Latin poetry.

Abstract:
Within the collected works of Venantius Fortunatus, the sixth-century Latin poet who wrote verse for kings, royal officials, bishops, and nuns in Frankish Gaul, there are found three acrostic poems. One, on the themes of captivity and release (5.6) is accompanied by a prose letter (5.6a) in which the poet discusses his methods in composing this work, which he intended for decorative display on a wall. The other two acrostics are written on the theme of the Holy Cross (2.4; 2.5). This paper, which offers a new interpretation of the figurative acrostics on the Holy Cross, begins first by examining the compositional strategies discussed by Fortunatus in 5.6a and his use there of the extended metaphor of weaving for the composition of acrostic poetry. The paper then moves to a wider discussion of weaving as a metaphor in Fortunatus's poetry before exploring how the poet played with metaphors and materiality, particularly in those instances when he was writing verse intended to be actually placed on material objects or sent with them. It finally goes on to argue, on the basis of indications within the acrostic poems on the Holy Cross themselves and much circumstantial evidence external to them, that these poems (2.4; 2.5) were written for public display in the chapel of the Holy Cross convent at Poitiers. It argues that these acrostics were most probably intended as textile designs for church vela or “hangings.”

Abstract:

Abstract:
In poetry the term ABC refers to an alphabetic acrostic, a poem in which each stanza or word start with a letter from the alphabet. The alphabetic acrostic – Abc poétique – is an enumerative, descriptive and sometimes narrative praise composed in Hebrew, Greek, Latin and in romantic languages like French, Spanish and Portuguese. The subject from « A to Z » was developed by brilliant past authors. This traditional poetic form was founded in Brazil since the XIX century in oral literature and also in cordel’s literature. The A. B. C. De cordel is a didactic poem which the subjects are developed from “A to Z” like lessons. The local communities have bought and listened to the folheto de cordel where it uses the Abc poétique form. The person who read cordel´s brochure would simultaneously learn the subject and the alphabet at the same time. In Brazil, Paulo Nunes Batista and Rodolfo Coelho Cavalcante, composed many alphabetic acrostics. In fact, the popular poets in Brazil preserve mnemonic and many other oral traditional forms

Abstract : The destruction of ozone in the stratosphere mainly by the release of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) in the atmosphere has lead to an increased incidence of UV radiation. In this paper we evaluate the effect of ultraviolet B radiation in the gametophyte development and in leaf anatomy, the contents of chlorophyll and carotenoids, in addition to chlorophyll fluorescence in fronds of sporophytes of Acrostichum danaeifolium Langsd. Fisch &. (Polypodiopsida, Pteridaceae) exposed to acute treatment (8 hours under UVB) and chronic UVB radiation treatments (1 hour daily for 45 days). The gametophytes of A. danaeifolium which received UVB radiation, when compared to control gametophytes proved to be more susceptible to damage and morphological changes when grown under chronic treatment, suffering from developmental delay, loss of apical dominance, abnormal development, and finally senescence and almost total gametophyte death. The sporophytes showed less sensitivity to UVB radiation. The leaf anatomy was affected. The sporophyte fronds exposed to chronic treatment showed curling similar to that observed for other species. Still showed malformed stomata on the abaxial face and loss of sinuosity of epidermal cells on the adaxial face when observed under SEM. Sections of fronds subjected to chronic treatment, stained with toluidine blue presented chloroplasts densely stained and concentrated against the inner wall of the cell. This effect was observed only in epidermal cells, indicating protection mechanism. No statistically significant difference was observed between control and plants grown under RUVB in the concentration of chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, concentration of carotenoids, ETRmax, aETR and Ek. It is possible that this specie presents mechanisms to prevent photosystem damage and degradation of chlorophylls since it is a specie that grows in sunny environment in the mangrove.

Acrostichum aureum L. e A. danaeifolium Langsd. Acrostichum aureum apresentou a fórmula cariotípica 2m+4sm+38st+16t e A. danaeifolium 2m+10sm+42st+6t.

Thesis (MTh)--Stellenbosch University, 2013.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: By means of literary, linguistic and comparative literary approaches, this study examines the literary structure of the alphabetical acrostic poems in the Psalms. First, a literary approach is used to analyze the form and content of each alphabetical acrostic poem to show that the literary structure of the poems is varied. Selected Psalms 9-10, 111 and 112 are translated from the Hebrew and compared to ancient Near Eastern languages especially Akkadian and Ugaritic. Second, by means of linguistic approaches, the literary structure of each poem is determined on both micro and macro levels using the researcher’s own translations of these psalms. Furthermore, a comparative literary approach is employed to compare the forms of ancient Near Eastern acrostics, in particular Akkadian, Egyptian and Ugaritic poems, to Hebrew acrostics. The analysis reveals both similarities with other ancient Near Eastern forms as well as the uniqueness of the Hebrew alphabetical acrostic poems. Both linguistic and literary insights are used to determine the relationship between the different forms. The findings suggest that the alphabetical acrostic poems were probably written around or after 1000 B.C.E. since the ancient Near Eastern poems were written before 1000 B.C.E. The unique 22-line form of the Hebrew alphabetical acrostics also indicates that Hebrew thought was distinct from what can be observed in other ancient Near Eastern texts. On the basis of this research, a conclusion is reached and suggestions for future research are made.

Abstract:
In a series of eight related experiments, the efficacy of first-letter mnemonics (acrostics) was tested against uninstructed and rote learning conditions in time-matched learning situations. Normal, factual curricular material was used to assess and compare performances of around 250 children drawn from two age-groups, (mode) 11.5 and 13.5. Gender differences were also compared. Additionally, a limited survey of teachers in seven state secondary schools was also undertaken to establish the range and extent to which mnemonics are used informally in regular teaching situations. Results are discussed in terms of the significant efficacy of first-letter mnemonics over the alternative learning methods studied, relative to classroom learning, performance and application.

The distribution of the global vegetation has been changing over time, but now climate change is occurring rapidly due to increased emission of gases causing the "greenhouse effect" and global warming. Acrostichum danaeifolium Langsd. & Fish. (Polypodiopsida, Pteridaceae) is a fern that typically grows in brackish or saline surrounding the coast being also found in some mangroves of the island of Santa Catarina. Coastal ecosystems considered transitional between terrestrial and marine environments, mangroves have wealth and great biological importance as natural "nurseries". This ecosystem may be severely affected by climate change. Knowing the physiology of its vegetation and its possible adaptations has fundamental importance to its preservation. Thus the study of germination and development of A. danaeifolium gametophyte is implicated in the knowledge of their reproductive characteristics, aiming at the conservation and management of the species. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of variations on pH, temperature, salinity and UV B radiation in the germination of spores of A. danaeifolium, correlating them the likely changes caused by climate change, and to identify morphophysiological and biochemical changes in young gametophytes undergo UV B radiation. Fertile fronds of this species were collected in permanent preservation areas (APP) of mangrove Itacorubi located in the central-west of Santa Catarina Island, SC, Brazil. Spores were filtered lens paper and stored at 7 º C. The germination test was conducted in culture room at 25°C (27 mol m-2s-1). There were no statistically significant differences in germination of spores used in the different pHs (4-9). Mild temperatures (15-20 º C) inhibited and / or delayed germination, while the temperature of 30°C was found maximum germination of the species. There was a decrease in germination with increasing salinity and a delay in spore germination, with 7 days of culture, under UV B radiation. One can also observe a reduction of growth in gametophytes subjected to UV B radiation as well as the emergence of anomalous branches in images captured by confocal laser scanning microscopy. Ultrastructural changes in the membrane system of chloroplasts and greater presence of starch grains and plastoglobules were observed in gametophytes subjected to UV B radiation. No differences were observed in the rapid light curves, obtained by the PAM fluorometer, both in gametophytes subjected to UV B radiation and in control. There were variations in chlorophyll concentration, with decreased of chlorophyll a and increase of chlorophyll b. There was no statistically significant difference with respect to carotenoids, but there was an increase of phenolic compounds in gametophytes grown under UV B radiation

Jing Zhong Temple, where themain deity is the Sage-King Yue Wu Mu(Yue Fei), is located in Houbi District, Tainan. It is very famous for retaining its 56 locally created acrostic divinatory poems. The first words of all the divinatory poems, when put together, would constitute special words, including the names of locations, the main deity worshiped, and different means of divination. By including the two later additions of divinatory poems at the beginning and end, that is, “Great Fortune” and “Little Joy” , the names become even more remarkable, reflecting the local style of the divinatory poems of Jing Zhong Temple in Houbi District. When the first words of the former six divinatory poems are put together, they spell out “Chulo County of Taiwan” . Hence, one can determine that the 56 divinatory poems have more than 200 years of history since their creation. However, to date, only the internal information of “Tai an Jing Zhong Culture and Education Charity Foundation”has an explanation regarding the creative style, background, and meaning of these poems. Therefore, this study focuses on the acrostic divinatory poems of Jing Zhong Temple in Houbi District in order to discuss the history of the temple, by reviewing historical literature and conducting field research. In addition, this study analyses and summarises the form and content of the poems. The findings of this study are as follows. By comparing the 56 divinatory poems of Jing Zhong Temple with some divinatory poems of three other local temples having similar structures, we found that the former were created earlier. Moreover, it is very likely that the divinatory poems of the other three temples imitated those of Jing Zhong Temple, which reveals the importance of the latter. The representative figures in the stories of the divinatory poems were identified based on Liu Wan-Lai’s “36th Village, Xia Jia Dong - Historical Explanation of the Divinatory Poems of Jing Zhong Temple” and Lin Yong-Hao’s “An Exploration of the Divinatory Poems Inspired by the Sage-King Yue Wu-Mu”. The study pointed out that the two versions of divinatory poems chose different representatives. Further, this study recommended suitable representatives through an analytical comparison between the content of the divinatory poems and poetic allusions. In addition, it reviewed historical documents to identify reference materials for each main story and the content of the divinatory poems. Moreover, the study amended the fallacies in the divinatory poems according to the wood-rubbed edition from the fourth year of Tongzhi’s reign. The content of the 56 divinatory poems has been organized and included in the appendix for readers’ reference, as well. Finally, the main stories guide individuals in understanding the historical background of the poetic allusions and the traditional virtues of the poets. Not only did they impart the wisdom and attitude a person should have in treating one another, they also encouraged people to be more diligent and to engage in active learning. This shows that apart from guiding those who sought divination in solving their problems, it also has the connotation and significance of enlightenment.

This study aims at the application of vocabulary acrostics teaching through ‘short poem’ practice on developing elementary school students’ sentence writing skills. Traditional vocabulary teaching focused on memory of vocabulary words and mechanical repetition of sentence patterns, the underlying theory of the study is that words are the basic building blocks of language, the units of meaning from which larger structures such as sentences, paragraphs and whole texts are formed. A word alone may be a word only, but it is up to the language learner to associate with other words then expand to a presentation of a short poem. Acrostics ‘short poem’ refers to using letters in a topic word to begin each line to form a poem, for example, the word WELCOME: When you Enter this Little School, Come On to Make Each day a happy day. Participants of the study were 20 fifth-grade students. The study lasts for one semester in a twenty-one week period. The study used vocabulary acrostics teaching through ‘short poem’ practice to help develop students’ sentence writing skills. After demonstration of vocabulary acrostics in class, students were encouraged to practice acrostics ‘short poem’ writing on a worksheet for every main word totaling thirty as listed in the textbook. Observation and interviews were also conducted to collect data for analysis. Data collected were categorized into four main areas, including vocabulary application, sentence formation, student’s expressiveness and student’s motivation. The findings revealed that the vocabulary acrostics practice not only provided the students with opportunities of reviewing vocabulary they have learned and even helped them to improve their ability of words for production. It also developed students’ writing skills in sentence formation. Besides, the application of vocabulary acrostics teaching also helped students explore their expressiveness in writing and motivated them to learn English.

Abstract:
The extensive poetic collection of Bianco da Siena reflects the rich spirituality of Jesuates as, under the generic definition of «lauds», there are writings belonging to different literary genres, such as the abecedary, the acrostic, the epistle and the preaching in verse, the mystical, penitential, santoral, Marian lauda, in addition to the paraphrase of prayers. The characteristic themes of «jesuate piety» often emerge in his compositions, such as the repetition of the name of Jesus, the desire to be dishonored, the importance of prayer, the Immaculate Conception, the devotion to the pope and to the clergy. A «jesuate specificity» emerges, intended to spread the «affective mysticism» of Carthusian matrix first of all among the Jesuates, but more generally among the true lovers of God.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on anagrams and acrostics. The anagram’s heyday must still be considered the seventeenth or even the sixteenth century. Then, anagrams were ‘divine notes’ in which providence and destiny might be discovered. Considered as mysterious texts, they might conceal great matters. By far, their commonest appearance was in names, especially the names of the great. Good anagrams, however, were difficult to find. The anagram passion succeeded an earlier rage for acrostic order, which came to be thought much inferior. The chapter then explores the various types of the acrostic order, including simple acrostic, mesostich, letters before and after caesuras, telestich, double acrostic, triple acrostic, and progressive or diagonal acrostic. Unruly anagram acrostics were a staple of the Baconians, whose enthusiasm tempted them to break the rules of the game or invent others at whim.
