Abstract:
ABSTRACT Introduction: Coping is defined as a process based on motor, behavioral, and cognitive effort to deal with the psychophysical demands that exceed an individual’s capacity. One of the instruments used most often for evaluating coping skills is the Athletic Coping Skills Inventory-28 (ACSI-28). Objective: This study aimed to validate the Brazilian version of the Athletic Coping Skills Inventory-28 (ACSI-28). The ACSI-28 is a multidimensional inventory developed to evaluate the different methods used by athletes to cope with sports pressure. Methods: The sample comprised 667 Brazilian athletes: male (n = 467; 70%); female (n = 200; 30%) with mean age 25 ± 5 years and eight (± 5) years of experience in individual sports (n = 182; 27.3%) or team sports (n = 485; 72.7%). Results: For construct validity, the relational structure of the items that comprise the original version of ACSI-28 was analyzed using EFA. The Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin measure (KMO = .83) and the Bartlett sphericity test (p <.0001) indicated adequate adjustment of the data to the factorial analyses. The reliability of the instrument was assessed by measuring internal consistency and by the stability of the measurement (test-retest). Conclusion: The Brazilian version of Athletic Coping Skills Inventory-28 was preliminarily considered valid. Level of Evidence III; Retrospective comparative study.

Abstract:
Confirmatory factor analysis was used as the basis for a new form of the Athletic Coping Skills Inventory (ACSI). The ACSI-28 contains seven sport-specific subscales: Coping With Adversity, Peaking Under Pressure, Goal Setting/Mental Preparation, Concentration, Freedom From Worry, Confidence and Achievement Motivation, and Coachability. The scales can be summed to yield a Personal Coping Resources score, which is assumed to reflect a multifaceted psychological skills construct. Confirmatory factor analyses demonstrated the factorial validity of the ACSI-28, as the seven subscales conform well to the underlying factor structure for both male and female athletes. Psychometric characteristics are described, and preliminary evidence for construct and predictive validity is presented.

Abstract:
The role of physical and psychological skills as predictors of performance and survival in professional baseball was studied in a sample of 104 minor league baseball players. Psychological and physical skills were largely uncorrelated with one another and appear to be measuring separate and independent skill domains. Preseason scores on the Athletic Coping Skills Inventory (ACSI-28) and coaches’/managers’ ratings of the same skills on an ACSI Rating Form each accounted for as much performance variance in batting average (approximately 20%) as did physical skills when differences in the latter were statistically controlled, and the psychological measures accounted for substantially more variance in pitchers’ earned run averages than did the expert ratings of physical skills. The psychological skills measures also predicted athletes’ survival in professional baseball 2 and 3 years after they were obtained. Bayesian hit rate anlayses indicated substantially increased survival predictability over simple base rate predictions.

Abstract:
Elite Young Team Players' Coping, Motivation and Perceived Climate MeasuresThe purpose of this study was to compare and contrast coping skills, motivational profiles and perceived climate in elite young ice hockey, soccer, water polo and volleyball players. It was also our aim to examine how male and female athletes differ in the above mentioned psychometric measures. Men's soccer (n=23) and ice hockey (n=20), and also women's volleyball (n=15) and water polo (13) players ranged in age from 16 to 18 years (M age=17.17, SD=.85). Each team was a finalist in last year's national championship for their age group. The instruments used in this study included the Perceived Motivational Climate in Sport Questionnaire-2 (PMCSQ-2), The Sport Motivation Scale (SMS), and the Athletic Coping Skills Inventory-28 (ACSI-28). Cooperative learning does not tend to be high, as one would expect in elite team players. Ice hockey and soccer players usually had higher psychometric measures than water polo and volleyball players. Also, male athletes demonstrate better ACSI-28, PMCSQ-2, and SMS measures than their female counterparts in many of the variables. Amotivation seems to be the most important decisive factor both among team sports and male and female participants. Also, our results prove that there are major differences between young elite male and female team players, so coaches' work in most aspects of their work should be gender-specific. Coaches of youth teams have to understand the motivational factors and coping strategies their athletes demonstrate in order to optimally organize and plan the teaching-learning process in their exercises, especially focus on cooperative task-solving exercises.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Background: Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) is associated with acute postoperative pain, decreased function, and psychological distress. Studies examining risk factors in pediatric populations following ACLR are limited; however, pediatric studies have found low socioeconomic status and fear of re-injury associated with poor outcomes. Hypothesis/Purpose: This study aims to expand the understanding of biopsychosocial risk factors for postoperative outcomes in pediatric ACLR populations. Methods: A retrospective review of patients that underwent ACLR at a pediatric sports medicine clinic from 5/12/17-5/15/19 was performed. Patients were included in the retrospective chart review if they were between the ages of 12 to 18 years, completed the ACSI-28, PROMIS Global Health 7+2 (PGH-7+2), Pedi-IKDC, and HSS Pedi-FABS, and underwent arthroscopic ACLR for a primary ACL lesion. Medical records were reviewed for demographic, sport involvement, injury, and treatment data collected at initial, pre-operative, first post-operative, one-year post-operative, and final post-operative visits. Results: 107 patients (55F) with an average age of 15.69 years (range 12-18), meeting inclusion criteria were included in this review. Patients were cleared to return to sport (RTS) on average 350.23 days post-surgery. Both days between injury and surgery (109.65 days) and days between initial presentation and surgery (92.64 days) were found to be moderately correlated with RTS (r=0.478; p<0.001 and r=0.525; p<0.001, respectively). Between group comparisons were conducted comparing younger (<14yos) and older (≥14yos) patients. When looking at the PGH-7+2; the <14yos cohort reported significantly higher self-evaluation of health than the ≥14yos cohort (54.93 v 50.08; p=0.004). This younger cohort passed their functional test whereas older counterparts did not (n=13; 1 v 1.15; p=0.045). Patients who passed the functional test during their treatment course (i.e., through final follow-up) reported better pre-operative overall and physical health than those who ultimately failed (PGH-7+2Q1; 4.18 v 3.38, p=0.012; Q3; 4.03 v 3.15, p=0.002). Younger patients were more likely to pass the functional test (15.49 v 17.07 years, p=0.002). Lastly, a comparison between patients who did and did not reinjure their knee post-operatively was reviewed. Reinjured patients reported having increased levels of performance related worry pre-operatively (ACSI-28, FFW; 5.22 v 7.36, p=0.034). Conclusion: These findings suggest older athletes (≥14yos), those with lower perceived overall and physical health ratings, with performance related worry, and/or longer time between injury or initial presentation and surgery will need more pre-, peri-, and post-operative support and resources for optimal outcomes.

Abstract:
Psychological Predictors of Injury among Professional Soccer Players Objectives: Numerous empirical studies suggest that specific psychological factors influence the frequency and severity of sport injuries. The main purpose of the present study is to outline the psychological factors, which predict increased injury vulnerability among professional male soccer players in Denmark. Based on the Stress-Injury Model by Williams & Anderson (1998) it is hypothesized that low coping resources, high competitive trait anxiety, and history of previous injuries would be positively related to an increased risk of injury occurrence and severity. Methods: The soccer players (N = 87) were asked to report history of previous injuries within the last 12 months. Furthermore, 2 questionnaires were used; Competitive Trait Anxiety Test, and Athletic Coping Skills Inventory - 28 (ACSI-28). Injuries were prospectively recorded throughout a period of approximately 3 months by the team's medical staff (doctors and physiotherapists). Results: Study findings clearly suggest that history of previous injury and coping with adversity are the best predictors of injury occurrence. These factors explained between 7 % and 11 % of the total variance of injury occurrence and days lost due to injury respectively. Furthermore, the same variables were found very successful in prediction injury occurrence. Conclusions: The findings support the suggestions that psychological factors can be utilized as a predictive measurement to sport injuries, which should be considered by coaches and medical staff in order to reduce vulnerability to injury.

AbstractThe aim of study was to examine coping and motivation of adolescent handball players in Debrecen. Forty-six male and thirty-one female handball players completed the questionnaires, furthermore eighteen male and eighteen females were participated in focus groups. The purpose of this study was to measure gender differences in sport motivation, psychological immune system and athletic coping skills in a population of adolescent handball players. The applied psychological measure method was the Sport Motivation Scale (SMS-28), four subscales of Psychological Immune System Inventory, and the Athletic Coping Skills Inventory (ACSI-28). Results revealed that males have a better self-efficacy and athletic coping skills and have a higher level of intrinsic motivation too. The outcome of the survey confirm that adolescence boys have a better self-efficacy and coping which can be seen on the sport ground as well. Other way focus groups were indicated the measure anxiety on sport ground, the applied coping strategies, and the motivation viewpoints of playing handball at the beginning of the activity and currently. at the Results has showed that at the beginning of playing handball participant have extrinsic motivation (e. g. the stimulation of their parents) but currently the reason of the activity is intrinsic motivation (e. g. health, future). Additionally, during the match there is a significant difference between the perceived anxiety against hard and weak teams at the beginning, in the middle and in the end of the match; furthermore, females have a higher level of anxiety during the match, against hard and weak teams too, but the difference is not significant. Finally, there is no significant difference between males and females in the applied coping strategies and it doesn’t have any effects on anxiety.

Abstract:
Abstract. Dancing is the artistic physical activity par excellence. This discipline exerts a psychological strain for those who practice it, but there is scarce evidence on what environmental characteristics are adequate for dancers to evolve in optimum conditions. This study analyses the existing differences in the psychological coping strategies between Spanish Dance and Flamenco dancers from the best Spanish companies. This research is the first in achieving this kind of sample. A total of 14 highly prestigious professional dance companies participated in this study. All participants were asked to complete the Questionnaire of Coping Strategies (ASCI-28) created by Graupera, Ruiz, García and Smith (2011). The results showed significant differences in all the surveyed factors, being Sara Baras Company the one obtaining the best values in all variables, except for the performance under pressure. Therefore, this study shows how important effective strategies are for dancers to meet a higher performance and enjoyment of their discipline.

Abstract:
Background: Multi-sport participation has been advocated for youth as a means to foster athletic development and reduce over-use injury. Whether this sport variety may influence functional and psychological readiness after injury is unclear. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare presentation, and functional and psychological recovery between single sport and multi-sport pediatric athletes following an ACL reconstruction (ACLR). Methods: Following IRB approval, prospectively collected data in consecutive patients treated for ACL injury (1/2015-2/2017) in a pediatric sports medicine clinic was reviewed. Inclusion required primary ACLR. Injury and surgical data, patient reported outcome measures (PROM) including both functional (Pedi-IKDC) and psychological PROM (ACSI-28 and ACL-RSI), functional clearance data (Y balance testing), timing of return to play clearance, and any re-injuries were reviewed. Comparison of multi-sport and single sport athletes was performed using a Kruskal-Wallis test and ANOVA analysis followed by T-tests for multiple comparisons. Results: 81.5% of patients who underwent an ACL reconstruction were single sport athletes. Single sport athletes presented with a higher initial BMI (24.47 ± 5.67 vs 22.45 ± 3.81, p = 0.03) than multi-sport athletes. In this cohort, soccer players (89%) were more likely to be specialized compared to football (61%) or basketball players (69%, p<0.01). No differences between groups were noted regarding surgical procedures or concomitant injuries. While no significant differences were found between the groups in time to functional clearance or clearance scores, it was noted that only ¾ of single sport athletes returned to sports (74.0% vs 92.3%, p = 0.06). Reported confidence in functional and psychological recovery improved in both groups throughout rehabilitation (see Table 1). Multi-sport athletes in this cohort demonstrated no advantage in either phase of recovery. Conclusion: Although multi-sport participation has been established to improve athletic development, and decrease burnout and over-use injury; it may not confer advantages in comparison to the specialized athlete for functional or psychological recovery following ACL reconstruction.
In sport, athletes are submited to various stressors, both physical (exercise, injuries), psychological (concern with performance, anxiety) and social (relationship with coach and teammates). The skills to deal with these phenomena are called coping. It is a conscious process, in which the individual evaluates the situation as stressful, trying to use my personal resources to control, reduce, or deal with demands of the activity. The Athletic Coping Skills Inventory-28 (ACSI-28) is multidimensional instrument used to assess different strategies to deal with stress in sport. The systematic review found 23 studies that used the instrument. Found a correlation between the dimensions of the ACSI-28 and successful athlete, a lower incidence of injuries and other psychological skills, etc. In Brazil there are few studies approaching the development of instruments that assess the psychological skills, especially when it comes to coping. The aim of this study was to validity a Brazilian version of the ACSI28. Factor analysis supported the structural validity of ACSI-25BR, removing three items from the original version. Five of the seven subscales showed adequate internal consistency. Through the MANOVA there were differences between gender, modality and performance level. According to the results, we conclude that the psychological skills need to be trained as much as the technical, tactical and physical, respecting differences and needs of men and women in different sports and competitive levels.

Abstract:
Literature has indicated that there are psychological characteristics in elite athletes of various sports that are significantly different than those of non-elite level athletes. The purpose of this study was to discover the different psychological characteristics associated with elite level gymnasts, and contrast the results with psychological characteristics of competitive gymnasts of other levels using the Athletic Coping Skills Inventory-28. Participants in this study were 195 gymnasts from gymnastics training centers throughout the United States. Results indicated that there was a significant difference in the Personal Resources Score (PCR) between the elite gymnast and all other levels. Furthermore, a significant difference was demonstrated among four of the seven sub-scales making up the Athletic Coping Skills Inventory-28. The study supports the hypothesis that the psychological make-up of "elite" level gymnasts is different than that of other competitive gymnastics levels.

Abstract:
The present study examined the factor structure and measurement invariance of the revised version of the Athletic Coping Skills Inventory (ACSI-28), following adjustment of the wording of items such that they were appropriate to assess Coping Skills in an educational setting. A sample of middle school students (n = 1,037) completed the revised inventory. An initial confirmatory factor analysis led to the hypothesis of a better fitting model with two items removed. Reliability of the subscales and the instrument as a whole was acceptable. Items were examined for sex invariance with differential item functioning (DIF) using item response theory, and five items were flagged for significant sex non-invariance. Following removal of these items, comparison of the mean differences between male and female coping scores revealed that there was no significant difference between the two groups. Further examination of the generalizability of the coping construct and the potential transfer of psychosocial skills between athletic and academic settings are warranted.
