The article examines the variability of simple sentences with actant content in modern English. The sentence is presented as an important factor for communication. It is noted that for language to be a means of communication, there must be a sentence as in order to communicate, it is necessary to make a sentence. Any sentence has an actant (an argument). Actants are generally accepted as words added to the verb. A verb expresses an action or state. On the semantic level it has been established that in Modern Lithuanian there are about 70 bivalent adjectives which possess two obligatory semantic actants – the possessor of the property and the complement. On the surface level both actants must have some kind of explicit or implicit expression, otherwise the meaning of the adjective is not fully realized. The paper describes various ways in which the complementary actant of the Lithuanian adjective can be signalled on the surface level, and draws several conclusions concerning the relationship between semantic and syntactic valency.Although

It is noted that the set and content of actants depends on the semantic valence of the verb producing Nomina actionis. It is also established that the meanings of some types of actant and non-actant metonymy are not embodied in verbal units and therefore are not marked in explanatory dictionaries.

Alien-encounter SF involves the introduction of sentient alien beings into the actantial system of the fictional universe; one or more of the actants are nonhuman or superhuman or subhuman. By staging a confrontation between an alien actant and a terran representative, alien-encounter SF broaches the question of Self and the Other. The reader recuperates this fiction by comparing human and alien entities, measuring the Self by examining the Other. In transitive sentences the splits are motivated by particular actant/person constellations and their interplay with modality, especially with negation. In intransitive sentences the splits are motivated by modality alone. All the different actancy coding procedures and intricate split patterns are explained here in terms of semantic motion, that is, the local increase or decrease of agency/salience properties of the actants involved. The verb - predicate, on the basis of its valence, at the request of communication, accepts its actants, realizing the semes that make up its semantics. An actant of a certain valency is considered a specific member of the sentence. Thus, valency is the intersection of grammar and vocabulary, syntax and semantics. It is for this reason that it is considered from two points of view, studied by dividing it into two types: semantic valence and syntactic valence. Abstract:
The goal of this bulletin is to provide timely information and/or updates on issues of adulteration of black cohosh (Actaea racemosa, Ranunculaceae) to the international herbal industry and extended natural products community in general. It is intended to complement the previously published works with information on black cohosh adulteration, e.g., the American Herbal Pharmacopeia monograph published by Upton et al.,1 and the review paper by Foster,2 by presenting new data on the occurrence of adulteration, the market situation, and consequences for the consumer and the industry.
