Abstract:
This article explores the legal institution of kafāla/kefalet (bondsmanship; surety) and its role in shaping local communal government in Syria in the Ottoman period. Drawing on the shar‘īya court registers of Tripoli (in addition to those of Sayda and Antioch as well as the Başbakanlık archives), it shows how iltizām tax-farming contracts in the 18th century increasingly required a pecuniary guarantee for their discharge to be posted by a third party, an act specific to Ḥanafī jurisprudence but not practised uniformly throughout the region. Whereas in some places the kafāla amounted to little more than a pledge of mutual accountability, or was imposed on a community against its will, it could also be used by foreign merchants or local notables to secure the rights to a given district’s commercial produce in advance. By “investing” in revenue collection concessions, the article concludes, both the southern Lebanese Shihābī emirs and the Maronite village population used the kafāla to acquire a direct financial and ultimately political stake in the rural hinterland of Tripoli, before dispensing once more with the idea of mutual or corporative responsibility once all of the province’s tax farms passed under complete Shihābī control in 1763.

Abstract:
In this study the effects of harder ultrafine Al2O3 particles on the mechanical milling of ductile Cu flakes (200mesh, 70μm) have been investigated. The small hard Al2O3 particle in the mixture acted as an effective milling agent not only by inducing a drastic change of the Cu morphology from flattened flakes to equiaxed crystals but also by reducing the milling time required for a uniform dispersion of Al2O3 in the Cu matrix. This was more pronounced as the Al2O3 concentration increased. A critical concentration of the reinforcing Al2O3 required for a shape change was observed at the range of 8 to 9wt. %. All the hard Al2O3 particles were uniformly embedded in the ductile Cu matrix regardless of the concentration of Al2O3. By increasing the milling time, the weldment and fragmentation of the Cu flakes became significant and a uniformly distributed equiaxed composite structure (13wt.% Al2O3) was obtained at above 70 min..

Abstract:

Abstract:
AbstractThe paper presents the test description and results of thermal bowing of RC beams exposed to non-uniform heating at high temperature. Bending of a non-uniformly heated element is caused by free thermal elongation of the material it is made of. The higher the temperature gradient, the greater the bending. In the case when an element is exposed to load and high temperature simultaneously, apart from free bending also deformation of the RC element may occur, which is caused by the decrease of the concrete or reinforcing steel mechanical properties. In order to examine the contribution of the deflection caused by thermal bowing to the total deformation of the bent element with a heated tension zone, an experimental study of freely heated (unloaded) beams was performed. RC beams were heated: (1) on three sides of the cross-section or (2) only on the bottom side. Deflection of elements loaded by a substitute temperature gradient was calculated using the Maxwell–Mohr formula. The test results show that deflection of freely heated RC beams (caused by the thermal bowing phenomenon) can be 10 to 20% of the total deflection of loaded RC beams with a heated tension zone.

Abstract:
Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) modified by gum arabic (GA) were incorporated into cement matrix composites to investigate their effect on intrinsic properties. Their ability to disperse the surface-modified MWCNTs uniformly in the cement matrix was also assessed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The intrinsic mechanical properties of the cement composites were investigated using Nano Indenter. Results showed that the addition of treated nanotubes significantly improved the intrinsic properties of cement matrix composites. The porosity and pore size distribution of the composites were measured using mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP), and the results indicated that cement paste containing MWCNTs had lower porosity and a more uniform pore size distribution. The morphological structure of samples was investigated using field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and X ray diffraction analysis (XRD), which showed that the MWCNTs acted as bridges across cracks and voided and formed a network that transferred the load in tension.

In this article, the dynamic response of a non-uniform Timoshenko beam acted upon by a moving mass is extensively investigated. To this end, the eigenfunction expansion method is adapted to the problem, employing the natural mode shapes of a uniform Timoshenko beam. Moreover, the orthonormal polynomial series expansion method is successfully applied to the coupled set of governing differential equations pertaining to the dynamic behavior of non-uniform Timoshenko beam actuated by a moving mass. Some numerical examples are solved in which the excellent agreement of the two presented methods is illustrated.

Abstract:
This paper studies the effect of variable viscosity on the transient Couette flow of dusty fluid with heat transfer between parallel plates. The fluid is acted upon by a constant pressure gradient and an external uniform magnetic field is applied perpendicular to the plates. The parallel plates are assumed to be porous and subjected to a uniform suction from above and injection from below. The upper plate is moving with a uniform velocity while the lower is kept stationary. The governing nonlinear partial differential equations are solved numerically and some important effects for the variable viscosity and the uniform magnetic field on the transient flow and heat transfer of both the fluid and dust particles are indicated.

Abstract:
The deep-sea pipe is an important part of mining lifting projects in the ocean floor. The uniqueness of environment conditions and design needs to determine the unforeseeable risks and challenges during the laying of pipeline. Based on extensive studies of loads acted on the pipeline and corresponding possible limit states for each installation method, a series of investigations on load-carrying capacity and buckling response of pipes under different loading combinations and various types defects (such as uniform ovalities)were carried out. In these calculations, the collapse pressure has been associated with the pressure maximum of a uniformly deforming long pipe. In experiments in a stiff pressure lifting pipelines, collapse is always localized as shown in Figures 3 and 4.However,because pipe’s localization takes place after the pressure maximum, the collapse pressure yielded by the 2-D analysis suffices for most cases. Exceptions are pipes with local imperfections, in the form of dents. The adequacy of this important conclusion will be demonstrated in the future application, where such predictions are compared to experiments.

Abstract:
Abstract In this paper, I posit that the transformation of monastic habits is observed and maintained in East Asian school uniforms. School uniforms at the schools founded by religious orders, mainly by Protestant and Catholic missionaries, could have manifested faith and religious identity. These religious authorities, who acted as managers of civic education, coincided with other public and private schools founded in secular contexts, unlike the religious emblems of those groups in their home countries. Many schools founded by Christian missionaries in East Asia in the early twentieth century eliminated a “sacred versus profane” dichotomy in their school uniforms and school symbols. In the formulation of a nation state in East Asia, homogeneity among inhabitants was more important than a faith-based religious identity by each Christian missionary group. Wearers of school uniforms in East Asia were taught to nurture civic identity along with the faith.

Abstract:
The cat's lateralis medialis-suprageniculate nuclear complex (LM-Sg) in the thalamus receives input from various brain regions such as the superior colliculus, brain stem, and spinal cord, as well as from visual association cortex. In a previous study, we demonstrated that LM-Sg receives cholinergic fibers from the pedunculopontine tegmental nucleus (PPT) and that cholinergic terminals make synaptic contacts with the dendrites of glutamatergic projection neurons and of GABAergic interneurons (Hoshino et al., 1997). In this study, we investigate the distribution and the organization of PPT terminals by means of a combined anterograde tracer (biotinylated dextran amine, BDA) and immunohistochemical methods. When stained by acetylcholinesterase (AChE), the LM-Sg is not uniformly immunoreactive, but rather is patchily labeled and shows a streaming type of reactivity. The tissue content appears high in enzyme activity in AChE-positive zones and is much lighter in activity in AChE-negative zones. We compared the synaptic organization between AChE-positive and AChE-negative portions of the LM-Sg in separate groups of electron-microscopic material: four types of vesicle containing profiles (RS, RL, F1, and PSD) as well as synaptic glomeruli were observed in this nucleus. Among these, the PSD profiles were observed more frequently in AChE-positive portions than in AChE-negative zones. Furthermore, the number of glomeruli was significantly higher in AChE-positive than in AChE-negative zones. Following the injection of BDA into PPT, labeled terminals within LM-Sg were rather more concentrated in the AChE-positive portion. Although the majority of PPT terminals made synaptic contacts with dendrites in the neuropil, a few terminals were involved in the synaptic glomeruli. The present results show that the synaptic organization is distinctly different between the AChE-positive and AChE-negative portions of LM-Sg. These results suggest that the AChE-positive portions of LM-Sg are relatively more involved in integrating information arising from a diverse set of inputs and processing that information within glomeruli in a complex manner than occurs in the AChE-negative portion of LM-Sg.

AbstractThis paper describes a fiber-based model proposed for computing the nonlinear longitudinal shear distribution in composite steel-concrete beams. The presented method incorporates the accurate stress-strain relationship with strain softening for concrete and bi-linear constitutive relation for structural steel, both in agreement with Eurocodes, however any one-dimensional constitutive relation can be used. The numerical solution for a simply supported beams loaded with the uniform load, concentrated force and both was presented. The results indicate that the highest value of the shear flow for a beam under an uniform load is at the ends and in the one third of the span length and for the point load, the maximum shear is in the proximity of the concentrated force.

Abstract:
This study has investigated protein metabolism in adults with hypopituitarism before and after growth hormone (GH) replacement and in matched controls. Whole-body leucine turnover was measured in 16 GH-deficient adult hypopituitary patients (nine females and seven males) on standard thyroid, adrenal and sex hormone replacement and in 20 normal controls using primed continuous infusion of l-[1 – 13C]leucine. In seven of the patients, leucine turnover was restudied following 6 months' treatment with biosynthetic human GH (0.025–0.05 IU/kg body wt daily, with the final dose determined by patient tolerance). Compared with normal controls, hypopituitary patients had significantly reduced leucine flux (mean±sd: 97.8±24.9 vs 131.0±23.0 μmol·h−1·kg−1; p<0.001), reduced leucine incorporation into protein (80.4±20.9 vs 108.8±19.6 μmol·h−1·kg−1; p<0.001) and reduced leucine oxidation (17.4±4.8 vs 22.2±8.1 μmol·h−1·kg−1; p<0.05). Leucine turnover was similar in male and female patients. In the patients, leucine flux correlated positively with body weight (p = 0.51, p<0.05) and leucine incorporation in protein correlated positively with lean body mass (p = 0.55, p <0.05) and in male patients leucine flux correlated positively with serum insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) levels (ρ=0.71, p<0.05). No significant relationship was observed with age or duration of hypopituitarism. Growth hormone replacement therapy did not produce a uniform effect on leucine metabolism. Mean values of leucine flux, oxidation and incorporation into protein increased, although the differences were not statistically significant. The patients on higher GH doses and with a higher serum IGF-I response were those who demonstrated an increase in leucine turnover. We conclude that leucine turnover in hypopituitary adults is reduced compared with normal controls. The effect of GH treatment for 6 months at conventional doses in hypopituitary adults is not uniform and may be dose-dependent.

Abstract:
The South African Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) published two policies in 2013 and 2015 respectively, on professional qualifications for lecturers at Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and at Adult and Community Education and Training (ACET) colleges. These policy frameworks require lecturers in TVET and ACET to complete work-integrated learning (WIL) in two settings: teaching (eg in classrooms, laboratories, workshops) and industry-based (eg factory, work sites, offices). Whereas the notion of industry and specialised workplace WIL for TVET and ACET lecturers was welcomed in certain circles, its inclusion in the ACET policy and the associated qualifications were not uniformly welcomed. Antagonism emerged primarily from some universities planning to offer ACET lecturer qualifications, ranging from insecurity about matters related to its implementation to outright rejection. This article draws on the theory of critical discourse analysis (CDA), reflecting on and debating the challenges that emerged during the development of the national curriculum frameworks for industry and the specialised workplace-based WIL component of the qualifications. Three discourses emerged: the first relates to a conflict between adult and community education with the discourse on industry-based WIL; a second relates to differences of opinion about what constitutes appropriate specialised workplace-based WIL for trainee ACET lecturers; and the third relates to the nature of ACET. It is argued that it differs from other forms of education and should not be subordinated to the ‘dictates of the state and capital’.

The visco-elasticity also introduces oscillatory modes in the system. A suffi-cient condition for the non-existence of overstability is also obtained.

Objective: Isotretinoin is a very effective drug in the treatment of acne vulgaris by topically. The objective of present study was formulation development of anti-acne gel using Isotretinoine and span 80 for topical delivery to cure nodulosystic acne vulgaris. Furthermore, the comparative study of all the evaluation parameters done with marketed formulation of same drug. Methods: Formulation of anti-acne gel of isotretinoin using Carbopol 940 as a polymer and incorporating isotretinoin in form of topical semi-solid gel using magnetic stirrer, Cremophor RH 40, and butylated hydroxytoluene. Drug was uniformly dispersed in Cremophor RH 40 and the respected solvents. Ethanol, isopropyl alcohol, and glycerin were used as solvents in 15% quantity. Further, the formulation was evaluated for physicochemical evaluation of gel formulations. The prepared gel were optimized statistically and characterized for pH, spredability, drug content, viscosity, in vitro diffusion study, acute skin irritation test, and antimicrobial activity. Evaluation test was also compared with marketed formulation of isotretinoin, that is, Sortet gel. The antibacterial and anti-acne activity of different formulations was determined by modified agar well diffusion method on the culture of Propionibacterium acne also compared with marketed formulation. Results: The optimized batch (B10) showed highest spreadability (32.422 g/cm3) in all formulations and also have high percentage of drug contents (95.60%). The spreadability value was 17.998 g/cm3 showing good spreadability. The viscosity of optimized batch was observed less as compared to other formulations, ultimately showed releases also more. In the in vitro diffusion study, B10 batch release 85.69% of the drug as compared to Sotret gel. The antibacterial activity was studied on anaerobic microorganism P. acne, compared with marketed Sortet gel. Optimized batch showed maximum zone of inhibition to P. acne below marketed formulations and standard benzyl peroxide gel. Conclusion: The topical anti-acne gel of isotertinoin was successfully formulated and evaluated for different parameters. The results indicate that the active component, that is, isotertinoin is more effective when subjected in gel formulations and produces effective anti-acne activity in the management of nodulosystic acne vulgaris.

Abstract The thermal instability of a layer of Rivlin-Ericksen elastico-viscous fluid acted on by a uniform vertical magnetic field is considered. For stationary convection, a Rivlin-Ericksen elastico-viscous fluid behaves like a Newtonian fluid. The magnetic field has a stabilizing effect. It is found that the presence of a magnetic field introduces oscillatory modes which were non-existent in its absence. The sufficient condition for the non-existence of overstability is also obtained.

Abstract:
Soil conditions may not be adequate for uniform yields when perennial pasture is converted to vegetable production. This occurred with `Pip' bell pepper (Capsicum annuum var. annuum L.) planted in a 0.17-acre field 3 years after conversion from perennial pasture. Depths of the A-horizon and pH levels, as well as concentrations of N, P, and K were variable throughout the field when sampled after the last harvest. Marketable yields from plots established in the field ranged from 4.1 to 14.5 tons/acre. The A-horizon depth, soil pH, and residual N, P, and K levels were correlated with yield at specific A-horizon depths and pH levels. An intensive soil-testing regime likely will be required so that nutrient levels can be maintained to support bell pepper production on soil converted from perennial pasture.

Abstract:
Abstract Clearcutting proved effective for regenerating central New York stands that were dominated by sugar maple along with American beech, black cherry, white ash, red maple, and basswood. Findings from five stands for periods of 7-13 years following clearcutting show densities equivalent to 2,400 to 9,400 saplings of commercial species per acre on 64-100% of the milacres sampled. In each stand, a minimum of 81% of the 6.6 ft radius sample plots were stocked with at least one sapling of a commercial species, suggesting that site occupancy will be fairly complete and uniform as these stands mature. All sites contained abundant regeneration of commercial species immediately after logging, ranging from 15,000 to 57,000 seedlings per acre, but as many as 90% of these were less than 1 ft tall. The species composition generally reflected the original forest with abundant sugar maple and American beech. However, large amounts of black cherry and white ash also appeared on some sites. Many bramble seedlings germinated during the first growing season after logging and developed into a dense uniform cover by the third year. However, the brambles declined as crown closure occurred in the new stands, and disappeared before the tenth year. Clearcutting should successfully regenerate stands of New York northern hardwoods having conditions similar to those of this study. North. J. Appl. For. 6:75-78, June 1989.

Abstract:
Objective methods to evaluate hardwood competition in young loblolly pine (Pinustaeda L.) plantations are not widely used in the southeastern United States. Ability of common sampling rules to accurately estimate hardwood rootstock attributes at low sampling intensities and across varying rootstock spatial distributions is unknown. Fixed area plot, polyareal plot, and Batcheler's triple-point distance sampling estimators of hardwood rootstock density, total height, and crown area were evaluated using computer simulation. Rootstock age, density, and spatial pattern combinations defined 24 artificial populations representative of hardwood rootstocks found in young loblolly pine plantations. Relative bias, relative precision, and within-and between-sample variance of the estimators were used as evaluation criteria. Eighteen sampling estimators with sampling intensities of approximately 1% were evaluated. Mean relative bias ranged from 1.2 to 7.0%, −1.5 to 1.0%, and −3.8 to 3.4% for fixed area, polyareal, and distance estimators, respectively. Spatial pattern affected evaluation criteria. Relative precision was highest in uniform populations and lowest in clumped populations. Variance was lowest in uniform populations and highest in clumped populations. Batcheler's distance estimator performed poorly. The 0.01-acre (1 acre = 0.405 ha) circular plot, vertical line, and horizontal point estimators were deemed "best" for density, total height, and crown area estimation, respectively. Vertical line sampling estimated all three attributes well and is recommended for field testing in young conifer plantations.

No ensaio realizado no período chuvoso, as cultivares Marisa AG-216, Verônica, Lucy Brown, Brisa, Tainá e Piracicaba-65 apresentaram os maiores pesos médios e produções comerciais.

Abstract:
Current emphasis on writing comprehensive nutrient management plans for crop production in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States requires accurate crop nutrient removal values for vegetable crops. Therefore, studies were conducted to measure nutrient uptake in harvested fresh sweet corn (Zea mays) ears in 2003 on a sandy loam soil and in 2004 on a silt loam soil, in New Jersey. Nine varieties were included in the study to represent early, mid-, and late-season hybrids. Corn production practices followed local extension recommendations. The crop was seeded by hand and thinned to ensure a uniform within-row spacing of 9 inches and a population of 23,231 plants/acre. Nutrient concentrations were determined on ear and stover samples oven-dried at 70 °C for 72 hours. Mean nutrient uptake values for full-season varieties based on a typical sweet corn yield of 150 cwt/acre (about 18,396 ears/acre) would be projected to remove (in lb/acre) 51 N, 9.1 P, 34 K, 3.7 S, 2.0 Ca, 3.9 Mg, 0.024 B, 0.09 Fe, 0.044 Mn, 0.014 Cu, and 0.072 Zn. Values for N, P, and K are similar to reference values in Knott's Handbook for Vegetable Growers (4th ed.). Due to smaller ear size, nutrient removal values were generally lower for early and mid-season varieties. In 2004 only, nutrient removal by harvesting the crop residue was also determined by assuming a harvest of 23,231 plants/acre, minus the upper ear for the average full-season hybrid. This biomass was found to remove (in lb/acre) 126 N, 13.4 P, 173 K, 11.6 S, 20.6 Ca, 13.6 Mg, 0.05 B, 0.37 Fe, 0.30 Mn, 0.05 Cu, and 0.13 Zn.

AbstractThe essay examines the British army's transformation from a small professional force into a mass conscript army between 1939 and 1945. Battlefield defeats and criticism of the nation's conduct of the war acted as a stimulus to reform in the early years. Examining such areas as officer selection, discipline, and the expansion of army education services (ABCA), the essay shows how the military adapted to the recruitment of millions of “civilians in uniform” and in some instances worked to contain or resist change. Special attention is given to class conflicts that arose between officers and “other ranks” and situations where perceived indifference to recruits' basic rights provoked protests and strikes, including protests over slow demobilization in 1946. A final section analyzes the role of ABCA and the forces press in creating a space for political discussion; the radical views prevalent among British servicemen; and the contradictions between the official ban on political debate in the forces, the rhetoric of “a people's war,” and the troops' growing focus on postwar reconstruction and the General Election of 1945.

Abstract:
Rechargeable aqueous Zn-ion batteries (ZIBs) have gained great attention due to their high safety and the natural abundance of Zn. Unfortunately, the Zn metal anode suffers from dendrite growth due to nonuniform deposition during the plating/stripping process, leading to a sudden failure of the batteries. Herein, Cu coated Zn (Cu–Zn) was prepared by a facile pretreatment method using CuSO4 aqueous solution. The Cu coating transformed into an alloy interfacial layer with a high affinity for Zn, which acted as a nucleation site to guide the uniform Zn nucleation and plating. As a result, Cu–Zn demonstrated a cycling life of up to 1600 h in the symmetric cells and endowed a stable cycling performance with a capacity of 207 mAh g−1 even after 1000 cycles in the full cells coupled with a V2O5-based cathode. This work provides a simple and effective strategy to enable uniform Zn deposition for improved ZIBs.

AbstractThe paper evaluates the relationship between the selection of the probability density function and the construction price, and the price of the building's life cycle, in relation to the deterministic cost estimate in terms of the minimum, mean, and maximum. The deterministic cost estimates were made based on the minimum, mean, and maximum prices: labor rates, indirect costs, profit, and the cost of equipment and materials. The net construction prices received were given different probability density distributions based on the minimum, mean, and maximum values. Twelve kinds of probability distributions were used: triangular, normal, lognormal, beta pert, gamma, beta, exponential, Laplace, Cauchy, Gumbel, Rayleigh, and uniform. The results of calculations with the event probability from 5 to 95% were subjected to the statistical comparative analysis. The dependencies between the results of calculations were determined, for which different probability density distributions of price factors were assumed. A certain price level was assigned to specific distributions in 6 groups based on the t-test. It was shown that each of the distributions analyzed is suitable for use, however, it has consequences in the form of a final result. The lowest final price is obtained using the gamma distribution, the highest is obtained by the beta distribution, beta pert, normal, and uniform.

A new methodology was developed to synthesize uniform rutile TiO2 nanorods. Rutile (TiO2) nanorods of length L200-300nm and diameter D15-20nm have been synthesized through a seed-mediated growth process by the additional thermohydrolysis of SnCl4 in concentrated acid aqueous solutions. The XRD show that the additional SnCl4 can accelerate the crystallization of the rutile due to the SnO2 acted as the nuclear, avoiding the slow processing of self-nucleation of the rutile TiO2. The HRTEM suggest that the crystal growth is preferential in the [11 direction resulting the formation of rod-like nanocrystals.

Current methodologies used for the inference of thin film stress through system curvature measurements are strictly restricted to stress and curvature states which are assumed to remain uniform over the entire film/substrate system. Recently Huang, Rosakis, and co-workers [Acta Mech. Sinica, 21, pp. 362–370 (2005); J. Mech. Phys. Solids, 53, 2483–2500 (2005); Thin Solid Films, 515, pp. 2220–2229 (2006); J. Appl. Mech., in press; J. Mech. Mater. Struct., in press] established methods for the film/substrate system subject to nonuniform misfit strain and temperature changes. The film stresses were found to depend nonlocally on system curvatures (i.e., depend on the full-field curvatures). These methods, however, all assume uniform substrate thickness, which is sometimes violated in the thin film/substrate system. Using the perturbation analysis, we extend the methods to nonuniform substrate thickness for the thin film/substrate system subject to nonuniform misfit strain.

Abstract:
Swarm intelligence is a kind of nature-inspired heuristic optimization technique. Different computation models usually take on relative uniform characteristic though they usually have distinct extrinsic forms. These intelligent algorithms are coupling with deterministic and stochastic, the contradiction between necessity and accidental unity, which promotes the "evolution" of the inheritance and the creative process: "stochastic" is adopted to give creative ability to the implemented "intelligent system", and a succession of "certainty" is acted to ensure the system is converging. In this paper, a computing framework of generalized swarm intelligence is proposed based on the unifying idea. The unified hiberarchy model and formalization description for swarm intelligence are represented. Several typical swarm intelligence algorithms, such as ant colony system (ACS), particle swarm optimization (PSO), estimation of distribution algorithms (EDA) and artificial immune algorithms (AIA) are addressed to validate the uniform idea of swarm intelligence, respectively.

Abstract:
The economic design of steel caissons for drilling and production platforms in the Arctic Ocean, formed from steel plates and supported by a rectangular grid of stiffeners, beams, and girders, requires that the full strength of the plates be mobilized to withstand extreme ice forces. A comprehensive method of analysis is needed to describe the behaviour of continuous steel plates into the inelastic range when they are acted upon by transverse loads. From this analysis, design procedures could then be developed. An extensive literature search has not revealed that satisfactory solutions exist for the load–deflection response of transversely loaded flat plates beyond the elastic limit when both flexural and membrane action are taken into account. Experimental data available in the inelastic range of behaviour are also limited.By considering various limiting simplified behavioural modes for the load–deflection response of uniformly loaded flat plates of zero aspect ratio, possible load–deflection domains are established. The limiting responses investigated are: elastic–inelastic flexural action, elastic membrane action, inelastic membrane action with increased stiffness resulting from increased Poisson's ratio in the inelastic range, elastic flexural membrane action, and action of a fully yielded cross section in flexure that gradually gives away to a fully yielded cross section in tension. Within the domain so established, a load–deflection behaviour is proposed that is in reasonable agreement with the results of the limited test data available. The results of a finite element analysis using the ADINA computer program are also in reasonable agreement with the proposed analysis. Design applications are discussed. Key words: deflection, elastic, elastoplastic, flexural resistance, membrane force, membrane resistance, plates, steel, strains, stresses, transverse load.

Abstract. A monoclonal antibody was used for the localization of the nuclear T3 receptor in different tissues of the adult rat: the liver, kidney, heart, lung, spleen, testis, and pituitary. In the liver, the immunoreactivity was found uniformly distributed in the nuclei of hepatocytes. Sections incubated with a control ascitic fluid or with the same ascitic fluid pre-adsorbed with purified receptor showed no specific staining. In the kidney, the immunoreactivity was higher in the epithelial cell of the proximal convoluted tubes and juxtaglomerular cells. In the heart, only the myocardial cells were stained. In the lung, the immunoreactivity was confined to type II pneumocytes and alveolar macrophages. In the spleen, only a few mature lymphocyte and macrophage cell nuclei were stained. These results show that: 1) the abundance of the nuclear T3 correlates with previous studies using hormone binding techniques; 2) the nuclear T3 receptor is selectively located in certain cell types, which possess a precise local function.

Except under very dry conditions, returns per acre for VRT were higher than for URT and the economic advantage of VRT increased as realized rainfall decreased from expected average rainfall. Nitrogen losses to the environment from VRT were lower for all situations examined, except on fields with little spatial variability.

The plate is made from rigid perfectly plastic material which yields according to the square yield condition and maximum normal yield condition. the plastic hinge line patterns shown in figs. 1. 2. are chosen. The obtained results are presented in figs. 4, 5, 6, 8.
