Abstract:
This chapter addresses the effect of decisions on organizational action. It argues that decision-makers who choose to or must stick closely to the rule of rationality may be likely to make good choices; but they are also likely to face difficulties in realizing their decisions. Mobilizing organizational actions is easier when decision processes are systematically irrational — when decision-makers consider only one action option for instance, and when preferences and consequences that support this alternative are the only ones considered. This relationship between decision and action is dependent upon the tendency of decisions to produce both certainty and uncertainty. The institutionalized purpose of decisions is to achieve certainty, to determine and stabilize the future. But because decisions are interpreted as choices, they also produce uncertainty by highlighting the fact that the choice could have been different — or perhaps should have been different — and that the future is dependent upon the whims of human beings rather than on stable, reliable entities.

Hommel, Bernhard. Goal-Directed Actions. Edited by Michael R. Waldmann. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199399550.013.18.

Full text
Abstract:
Personal causation relies on translating goals into goal-directed behavior. This chapter addresses how humans generate a goal-directed behavior, that is, how they initiate and control intentional, goal-directed actions. In particular, it discusses how anticipated action effects are integrated with motor patterns, so to guide future effect-driven actions, and how action intentions struggle with overlearned habits. It argues that intentional and conscious processes typically precede, rather than accompany, intentional actions, and that the experience of personal agency and the identification of action errors are based on a comparison between expected and actual action effects. A final outlook addresses the implications of increasing insight into cognitive embodiment and of increasing interdisciplinarity for the study of human action control and personal causation.

Brunsson, Nils. Organized Hypocrisy. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199206285.003.0007.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter deals with the theme of hypocrisy — the inverted relationship between decision and action. Hypocrisy is a response to a world in which values, ideas, or people are in conflict — a way in which individuals and organizations handle such conflicts. It is a way of trying to satisfy some demands by talk or decisions and others by action. Situations of conflicting demands often make it easier to act in one direction if the decision indicates the opposite: the more clear is the decision that is made about an action, the lower the likelihood that that action will actually be taken. The probability of an action increases if what is decided is in opposition to it. Decisions in one direction compensate for actions in the opposite direction and vice versa. In order to choose or mobilize actions, decisions must be made before actions. In order to establish responsibility and create legitimacy, however, this is not always necessary; instead it is often wise to make decisions after the actions — when there is no uncertainty about which action has been taken.

Mele, Alfred R. Causation, Action, and Free Will. Edited by Helen Beebee, Christopher Hitchcock, and Peter Menzies. Oxford University Press, 2010. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199279739.003.0026.

Abstract:
Many issues at the heart of the philosophy of action and of philosophical work on free will are framed partly in terms of causation. The leading approach to understanding both the nature of action and the explanation or production of actions emphasizes causation. What may be termed standardcausalism is the conjunction of the following two theses: firstly, an event's being an action depends on how it was caused; and secondly, proper explanations of actions are causal explanations. Important questions debated in the literature on free will include: is an action's being deterministically caused incompatible with its being freely performed? Are actions free only if they are indeterministically caused? Does the indeterministic causation of an action preclude its being freely performed? Does free action require agent causation? This article concentrates on issues about action and free will that centrally involve causation.

Abstract:
In this chapter, the author engages what Paul of Tarsus says about divine agency and divine action in his letters and in the book of Acts. Attention is given to the types of divine actions Paul identifies, whether he identifies God as an agent of various actions, and his comments about whether we have access to divine agency and divine action. The author identifies particular divine actions seen in Paul’s writings, like the work of God in his own life and in his calling as an apostle, personal revelations from Christ, and divine action in the church that brings about unity.
