Abstract:
An expanded conception of performance study can disturb current theoretical and historical assumptions about television’s medial identity. The article considers how to write histories of the dominant forms and assumptions about performance in British and American television drama and analyses how acting is situated in relation to the multiple meaning-making components of television. A longitudinal, wide-ranging analysis is briefly sketched to show that the concept of performance, from acting to the display of television’s mediating capability, can extend to the analysis of how the television medium ‘performed’ its own identity to shape its distinctiveness in specific historical circumstances.

Abstract:
I begin with two images of African actors. The first, from Asinamali by the South African playwright Mbongeni Ngema (1985; Plate 23), shows a group pose drawn directly from protest theatre—angry men in prison khaki, with fists clenched, bodies tensed in readiness and, one can assume, voices raised against the invisible but all too palpable forces of apartheid. The second, from the centenary celebrations of the American Board Mission in South Africa (1935; Plate 24), portrays the ‘smelling-out of a fraudulent umthakathi’ (which can be translated as diviner or trickster), which were followed, on this occasion, by other scenes portraying the civilizing influence of European settlers. While the first offers an image of African agency and modernity in the face of oppression, the second, with its apparently un-mediated reconstruction of pre-colonial ritual and, in its teleological juxtaposition of ‘tribal’ and ‘civilized’ custom, seems to respond to the quite different terms set by a long history of displays, along the lines of the Savage South Africa Show (1900), in which the authenticity of the Africans on stage was derived not from their agency but by their incorporation into the representation of colonial authority.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the ways in which British and French imperial heroes involved in the exploration, conquest or administration of Mrica between 1870 and 1939 were selected, packaged and promoted to the various sections of the public of their respective countries. It seeks to unveil the commercial, political and personal interests that lay behind the imperial hero-making business. This research analyses the hidden mechanisms, as well as the reasons that led to the appearance of a new type of hero in the context of the 'new' T Imperialism and the 'Scramble for Mrica': private connections, political lobbies (especially colonial advocates and nationalists), commercial interests (journalists, writers, biographers, hagiographers, publishers, film-makers) and personal ambition, the combination of which underpinned the creation and success ofheroic reputations. The first part of the thesis investigates the process through which imperial heroes progressively became widely known in their homelands, and how it was facilitated by the technical and social improvements of the Second Industrial Revolution. Drawing upon a wide variety of printed and manuscript sources, it shows the ever-increasing commercial success of imperial heroes throughout the period, analyses how they could serve political ends, and explains the values for which 'they were held up as examples. The second part examines the case studies of two military commanders in times of Anglo-French rivalry in Africa (the Sirdar Kitchener and Major Marchand before, during and after the Fashoda confrontation of 1898), in order to compare the modalities of the development of these legends, and the different backdrops against which they took shape. This thesis is the first to combine quantitative evidence (such as print run figures) and qualitative sources (such as police records) to demonstrate conclusively the prevalence and complexity of the hero-making process brought about by the conquest of Mrica, and to evaluate the reception of these heroic myths among the public.

Katritzky, M. A. "A study in the commedia dell'arte, 1560-1620 : with special reference to the visual records." Thesis, University of Oxford, 1995. http://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:e9e53854-2a31-4bbf-8ed1-ee414aa7f5a3.

Abstract:
The research field addressed by this thesis is the commedia dell'arte and its iconography in the period preceding Callot's Balli di Sfessania engravings of c. 1621. Its main aim is to provide a broad overview of the surviving early pictures in order to contribute towards a more detailed understanding of the history of the commedia deH'arte in the opening decades of its existence, 1560-1620, by using late renaissance pictures as a documentary source. My research method has three main steps. These are firstly, the identification of relevant pictures, on the basis of a detailed understanding of the early history of the commedia dell'arte, and taking a deliberately inclusive approach; secondly, the classification of such pictures according to art-historical methods, in order to associate them with specific named artists so that they can be placed in the context of an oeuvre and place of production; thirdly, interpretation of their theatrical content. Integral to the thesis are the 340 plates. Many feature pictures which were anonymous or implausibly attributed, and unknown to theatre historians, before they appeared here or in my publications. My inclusive approach has contributed towards the marked rehabilitation of carnival pictures which is evident in the most recent scholarship in this area. My new discoveries, and attributions and re-attributions of some of the 340 plates, summarized in the plate list, have enabled me to identify significant bodies of commedia-related pictures by a number of named late renaissance artists not previously associated with theatre iconography, and provide a broad overview of the early stock types, their costumes and settings; contributions which are stimulating further research in this area. Section I summarises the rise and spread of professional acting in sixteenth century Italy, some forerunners of the commedia dell'arte, and its early stock types. It also presents new documentary material, discovered in the course of my archival researches, which is relevant to the earliest commedia performance for which a comprehensive description survives, staged in Munich in 1568. Section II presents art-historical analyses of three groups of prints in Stockholm, and six paintings which are the subject of an article published in 1943. It also presents an overview of a large group of Flemish pictures whose relation to two Italian prints demonstrates the progressive stereotyping of commedia-related motifs which was already occurring around 1600. Section III offers theatrical interpretations of the pictures, concentrating on scenery, set and stages; actresses; a selection of stock characters, including Harlequin, Zanni and Pantalone, and also some less wellknown figures such as tedescos and matachins; and multiple and serial images. The renaissance Italian comedians' multiple roots in amateur humanist comedy, professional entertainment and popular carnival ritual gave them their early creativity and wide appeal, and left their mark on the iconography which, by the seventeenth century, like the commedia dell'arte itself, was, for the most part, settling into a predictable routine based on precedents and conventions.

Acknowledging theatrical styles such as physical theatre, Tanztheater and poor theatre as forms of ‘total theatre’, and recognizing that there has been a prolonged process of development to reach such a point, the first chapter investigates the historical divide between dramatic dance and drama as starting point. Subsequently, in considering the body as expressive medium, the impact of content and form on the training of the performers’ body for the theatrical context is also evaluated.

Thesis (MDram)--Stellenbosch University, 2003.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In this thesis the author investigates aspects of the use of improvisation and improvisational methods, techniques and exercises by modem practitioners. The study commences with a look at the beginnings of modem improvisation in the nineteenth century, when improvisation was used only tentatively by performers as a preproduction aid to the exploration of character and personal response. In more recent times the process has become one of collaboration and research; as a means of selfdiscovery, as a means of text creation and as a vehicle for finding a 'voice' for the silent majority within a particular community or society. This study also traces the use of improvisation in South Africa where the improvisational process has been incorporated into democratic and collaborative forms like workshop theatre and workers' theatre, and serves as a useful method of political investigation and conscientisation. The study will also briefly touch what on is now termed 'theatre-fordevelopment', since its practitioners make extensive use of improvisational techniques, and its techniques are allied to those of workers' and workshop theatre. The final chapter provides an application of the theories discussed in the bulk of the study in a brief discussion of the author's own attempts at utilising improvisation as a directing and scriptwriting tool in a student production.

Matthews, Laura S. "DIRECTING THROUGH ANCIENT MOVEMENT: An Experiment Exploring Ancient Greek Choral Structures on the Modern Stage." VCU Scholars Compass, 2019. https://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/5731.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis outlines my research and creative process of how to direct modern theatre under the structure of the Ancient Greek chorus, specifically through movement. I include a brief history of how the chorus functioned in Ancient Greek theatre; how movement shaped the chorus’ role as well as the story for the audience. Using the parameters of the chorus, I directed two theatrical productions, Jason Robert Brown’s Parade, and Sarah Ruhl’s adaptation of Virginia Woolf’s Orlando. Through exploration and analysis I conclude that using Ancient Greek choral movement in modern theatre helps to create a more specific story through gesture and space, bridges the gap between the audience and action onstage, and should be the foundation of how directing is taught in academic settings.

Abstract:
In this paper, the submergence and wave impact loads acting on an offshore structure when transported on a heavy lift vessel has been experimentally studied. The nonlinear global system response under the effect of direct wave loads on the cargo has been investigated. An approach is developed to derive the global direct wave loads time history acting on the cargo in three-dimensions and correlate them to the submergence event. Numerical results are presented to illustrate this approach. Seafastening loads time history are also presented and correlated to the submergence event. Cargo Stability requirements against uplift and overturning on the vessel have been examined and reported.

Abstract:
The adaptation of steam engines for marine propulsion caused a dramatic shift in naval and commericial ship design during the 19th Century. The transition from sail to steam hastened the demise of several classes of ships and altered shippings routes from the trade winds to great circle routing. The conduct of naval warfare was always influenced by the limits of available propulsion technology. Throughout maritime history, innovative naval commanders sought ways to overrun, outmaneuver, and outlast their opponents. Coincident developments in armaments and armor, facilitated by this “new” propulsion technology, rendered the world’s sailing navies largely obsolete within a relatively brief period of the 19th Century. This presentation highlights the major technological advances in steam propulsion from the early combination of low-speed single-acting reciprocating engines driving paddle wheels through high-speed turbines and reduction gears driving multiple-blade variable-pitch propellers; and, boilers heated by hand-fed wood and coal through nuclear fission.

Full text
Abstract:
A vehicle suspension subsystem consists of springs, shock absorbers and linkages, which attach to the wheels and chassis. The interaction between vehicle suspension and road generates dynamic forces in the suspension subsystem. In fact, vehicles travel at variable speed suffering a wide spectrum of vibrations and, usually, road profiles describe the roughness of the pavement surface, which represent their elevation as a function of a distance traveled or time. Consequently, suspension subsystem undergoes complex loading history that never reaches a level sufficient to cause failure in a single application. This means that components may fail due to fatigue. At this context a Double A suspension, which has two sets of linkages called lower and upper control arms, could fail by fatigue according to MBS and FEA. Thus, this work aims to present a MBS analysis of a Double A suspension submitted to a random road profile using a multibody commercial software. The fatigue life analysis focus in the lower control arm (LCA). For this, forces components (longitudinal, vertical and lateral force) and torques, composed by eleven loading history acting on pre-defined points at the LCA, characterize the response of the component in such a situation. In fact, forces computed by multibody simulations improve the FEA by providing better assessment of how they vary throughout the random profile. For FEA, a methodology is proposed to simplify the loads acting at this element and perform the fatigue analysis by finite element method, in which transient analysis was performed. This work represents a secondary stage of a broader study concerning the proposition of a constant amplitude proportional loading road profile based on the fatigue life results obtained from the complex loading history. Thus, it is expected to obtain in future works a simple signal to reproduce in numerical simulations, especially in fatigue analysis, and in experimental tests.

The dynamic ice force is produced by failure process during ice interaction with structure. The best way for describing and modeling this process is using directly measured ice force on full scale structure in situ. In this paper, the ice force variation and corresponded failure process of ice sheet were recorded by ice load panel and video camera. It is demonstrated that when ice acting on upward narrow cone and in bending failure and well clearing by side of the cone. The form of ice force history looks like impulse signal.

Abstract:
This paper describes a parametric identification tool for predicting the hydrodynamic forces acting on a submarine model using its motion history. The tool uses a neural network to identify the hydrodynamic forces and moments; the network was trained with data obtained from multi-degree-of-freedom captive maneuvering tests. The characteristics of the trained network are demonstrated through reconstruction of the force and moment time histories. This technique has the potential to reduce experimental time and cost by enabling a full hydrodynamic model of the vehicle to be obtained from a relatively limited number of test maneuvers.

Abstract A procedure for determining the reliability of a structural element or machine part is presented. The solution assumes that the stress history in the part can be described by a narrow band, stationary, Gaussian random process and that the fatigue behavior of the part is governed by the classical S-N curve. Endurance limit modifications are discussed and a procedure is presented for determining the mean and standard deviation of the static stresses acting throughout a structure. A numerical example is presented showing the method applied to estimate the fatigue reliability of a power wheelchair frame.

Abstract:
Reaction force of safety valves acting to the piping system is one of key factors for the piping system design around the safety valves. In case of open discharge system, it is well known that a large reaction force acts to the piping corresponding to the fluid momentum force at the atmospheric discharge. On the other hand, reaction forces for closed discharge system may be relatively small since the forces acting to the adjacent two points with flow direction change such as elbows and tees are balanced within very short period. However, large reaction forces may act as a result of unsteady flow just after the initial activation of the safety valve. API RP520 mentioned that a complex time history analysis of the piping system around the safety valves may be required to obtain the transient forces. This paper explains a method of a comprehensive dynamic simulation of piping system around safety valves taking interaction among the valve disc motion, the fluid transient for compressible flow and the piping structural dynamics into account. The simulation results have good agreement with the experimental data. The effectiveness of this method is confirmed throughout an application to actual piping system around safety valves.

Abstract:
Th e corona pandemic is incredible and, allegedly, a new phenomenon for many Europeans. Th at is why few people know the history of European pandemics. Th e lack of interest (disinterest) in historical development is due to the misconception of many experts. Preventive care and advances in medicine and technology always require only “looking ahead”. Th is (future-oriented) advanced way of thinking and acting meant that any disease that has epidemic proportions can, in the shortest possible time, be “defeated”. However, history shows that in Europe, from the Middle Ages until today, not a century has passed without epidemics or pandemics, and that signifi cant lessons and conclusions for the future could be drawn from any such crisis. Since the 18th century, development has tended more and more towards an insurance-oriented health and social policy, which in the 19th century was called insurance policy. By combining traditional experience with new or modifi ed concepts based on the principle of “preserving tradition, shaping the future”, the insurance industry can adapt to the new requirements of health and social policy, even in a crisis caused by the coronavirus. In this case, there is digitization, with the help of which it is possible to network with new studies and data, in order to improve quality.

Abstract:
This article describes the optimization of the Zabbix network monitoring tool at the Hospital Universitário de Santa Maria, where existing servers had been presenting problems generated by the misconfiguration of the tool as a whole. The high amount of network assets monitored by the tool, and the abundance of data collected, slowed the machine, making it difficult to use when necessary. New network assets and locations to be added were analyzed to ensure item history. Thus it is possible to generate reports for statistics, and reduce the computational effort of the tool to bring real-time information of network problems. To solve the problems presented, and obtain concrete data of the environment, it was aimed to optimize the tool itself, reviewing items from each host on the machine, linking templates, adjusting the use of the housekeepinp function (acting to remove unused records in database level), among other processes to improve server performance. This facilitates the use of the tool.

Abstract:
The North American plains bison once numbered in the tens of millions, but only around 1,000 individuals remained by the late 1800s. Through the actions of private individuals and organizations, the establishment of a few protected, federally managed, herds saved the subspecies from extinction and today the Department of the Interior (DOI) supports ap-proximately 11,000 plains bison in 19 herds across 12 states. DOI chartered the Bison Conservation Initiative in 2008, which established a framework for bison conservation and restoration on appropriate lands within the species’ histori-cal range. With the recent announcement of the 2020 DOI Bison Conservation Initiative, DOI outlined a diverse range of accomplishments made under the 2008 Initiative and re-affirmed the commitment to work with partners in support of managing bison as native wildlife. Both the 2008 and 2020 DOI Bison Conservation Initiatives endorse a holistic approach, addressing health and genetic considerations, and recommend managing DOI bison herds together as a metapopulation to conserve genetic diversity by restoring gene flow. Bison conservation and restoration efforts must consider the significance of disease in bison herds and apply a multi-jurisdictional, multi-stakeholder approach to the management of bison on large landscapes. Robust herd health surveillance programs, both in the donor and recipient herds, along with strong partnerships and communication, are needed to protect the century-long success of DOI bison conservation and stewardship. This report discusses overarching principles affecting bison health decisions in DOI herds and provides detailed baseline herd health history and management, providing a foundation upon which the 2020 Bison Conservation Initiative vision for DOI bison stewardship can be realized.
