Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
This article examines the movements made by the Centre d’action laïque (CAL, Centre for Secular Action), a French-speaking structure of organized secularism in Belgium, in its definition of secularism over the last twenty years. Starting from an observation of the mobilization of secularism in the written output from the CAL, the article examines the extent to which its secular ideal has become secularized both in its vocabulary and in its commitments, no longer being necessarily determined by its relationship to religion. It reveals how the written output of the CAL is gradually distancing itself from a secularism constructed in opposition to, but also and perhaps in mirror image with, clericalism, to engage instead with topics previously unknown to secularism (such as sport, drugs and prostitution) so as to better respond with a philosophical secularism that a single position vis-à-vis religion can no longer always justify.

On the occasion of 150-th anniversary of Paul Otlet, a prominent documentologist and foreteller of the Internet (1868–1944, Belgium), the author tracks his contacts with another prominent figure, Nikolas Rubakin (1862–1946), Russian founder of bibliopsychology, library scientist, bibliographer, publisher, the author of a dozen of popular books. Paul Otlet took part in creating the Institute of Bibliopsychology headed by N. Rubakin, and Rubakin, in his turn, contributed to the preservation of multimillion collection of bibliographic cards and books that made the major document resource of the International Bibliographic Institute established and headed by P. Otlet. The author demonstrates their shared understanding of the key concepts related to the document and the book, bibliopsychology, propagandology, ideas of the fair world order. For the first time, Rubakin’s response to the last Otlet’s monograph («Monde: essai d’universalisme: connaissance du monde, sentiment du monde, action organisée et plan du monde») (1935) is discussed. The article is based mainly on archival materials; some fact data are published for the first time ever.

Abstract:
My Sociology PhD thesis aims at contributing to the grasp of the conditions according to which collective actions organized in Guadeloupe are successful –a case in point is “Noël Kakadò”. “Noël Kakadò” is a customary, a cultural and economical celebration, which takes place in the town of Vieux Habitants, where the first colonists settled in 1635. It is an action, lead by a group of associations called “Collectif Eyéri” (Caraïbe name meaning “those who were there before», the first inhabitants). This celebration takes places by the four Advent Fridays, in the four boroughs of the town. It consists in the organization of a Christmas party of yesteryear based on coffee growing, and occurs on the river and cacador square, in a folk memory ambience. It is in the end part of the material and immaterial heritage of the habissois’ territory. I have been wondering if these celebrations or cultural events were in line with the History of the place and its folk memory dimension, about the regional and cultural identity. They also refer to the natives’ values and the way of life on the coffee plantation. They make people link, they develop the territory and its resources, and they lead to local development. These convivial and interdependent moments contribute to legitimate them and make them durable; the economic growth of the territory being their main goal. Being linked to the CERAL laboratory, my work shall first lean on the Sociology of Development (in particular on Pecqueur Bernard, Greffe Xavier, and Teisserenc Pierre ‘S studies). The Sociology of organization (with the studies of Boltanski Luc, Thévenot Laurent, Crozier Michel, and Friedberg) added to the work of Chamoiseau Patrick and Glissant Edouard on the regional and cultural identity shall pad out my writings. Moreover, I will be inspired by the study of two other events: the “Fête du crabe” (celebration praising crab) in Morne-à-l’Eau and the “Fete des cuisinières” (celebration honoring cooking customs) in Pointe-à Pitre. This would be my contribution to a better knowledge of collective actions in Guadeloupe

Abstract:
In complex fields, change requires cooperation from numerous dispersed actors with divergent interests. Guided by reference works and articles, we draw on complementary insights from institutional and plural leadership in team theories to enrich the emerging notion of Collective Institutional Entrepreneurship. In this sense, this work focuses on the micro mechanisms by which actors engage collectively in entrepreneurial actions and highlights the structural and organized character involving the action of many individuals acting under the same entity: the "Collective". Our research is based on a case study called the "Espace Partagé de Santé Publique", which has been established in 2005 to favor social innovations targeting disabled individuals. Collective Institutional Entrepreneurship takes many forms varying from the institutional work in witch actors are involved. It shows how collective institutional entrepreneurship relies on shared competencies and on the sharing of multiple resources derived from a diversity of actors working in a collaborative effort. This case study shows how experiments such as EPSP are conducive to the emergence of Collective Institutional Entrepreneurship involved in the design and implementation of a social innovation. The platform provides a large set of various resources, and institutional entrepreneurs can use its to establish a social innovation project. Regarding the structure and dynamics of Collective Institutional Entrepreneurship, the main results of this study invite future investigations to consider the richness of collective dynamics to apprehend complex institutional changes

Abstract:
This dissertation focuses on the appearance, evolution, internal crises and transformations of the Kurdish movement in Turkey. This work sits at the crossroads of the sociology of action, theories of collective action and subaltern studies. The study design introduces structured, organizational and visible dimensions of Kurdish protests on one side, and less-visible, unstructured and non-centralized aspects of these actions on the other. To complete this perspective, the experience and subjectivity of individual actors in the movement are analyzed. The methods used in this thesis are primarily qualitative, including semi-directed interviews. The corpus studied consists of 77 interviews with members of Kurdish associations and political parties in Turkey, as well as with guerrillas and former militants from the PKK. Secondary sources, documents and newspapers are also analyzed. The thesis follows three main lines of thought and is divided into six chapters. Firstly, this study focuses on the emergence and evolution of the Kurdish movement in Turkey. In the second section, the analysis focuses on processes of engagement, activism and disengagement in the Kurdish space. Finally, the last section examines how the space of Kurdish collective action is expanding and diversifying. Discourse, rhetoric, perceptions of identity and strategies are challenged and sometimes transformed in this new transnational space

Herrmann, Lou. Thesis, Lyon, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017LYSE2026/document.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis analyses the contemporary modalities of the production of residential allotments (lotissements) in France, as well as the morphological quality of urban spaces produced in this operational framework. It questions the paradox between the almost unanimous criticism directed at these residential developments, on the one hand, and the observation of exemplary developmentoperations on the other hand. It explores the conditions under which this modus operandi can produce urban spaces with morphological qualities. The residential allotments are considered from a dual perspective: as a material space, by studying the quality of the urban fabric; and as a process, by analysing the functioning of the collective action systems composing it.From a theoretical perspective, this work makes use organisational sociology tools (sociologie des organisations) by crossing of the Strategic Analysis inputs (Crozier and Friedberg) with those of the Economies of Worth (Boltanski and Thévenot). The understanding of the development’s materiality draws on the “frames” approach (approche par trames) developed around the notion of urban fabric by the French school of urban morphology. The thesis relies on qualitative and comparative analysis of four case studies located in urban agglomeration of Lyon.Firstly, it shows that there is no morphological fatality. The fabric analysis of these four projects proves that this modus operandi is not doomed to produce mediocre urban spaces. This demonstration draws on a prior conceptualisation of the notion of morphological quality, considered as a social convention. The analysis of subdivision laws (droit de lotir), in the broader context of regulatory changes in the field of urbanism and town planning in France, then shows that the impact of sustainable development regulations is, at least indirectly, to increase the quality of the residential allotment. Legal changes have indeed created a context that encourages a stronger reflection on development location by the project manager (maître d’ouvrage) and probably also a greater building density.Nevertheless, laws cannot provide a full explanation. The decisions regarding morphology are made at three key moments: when the planning laws (droit des sols) are defined, when the planning approvals (autorisations d’urbanisme) are delivered and when developments are designed and programmed. The analysis so reveals that the municipal stakeholder potentially holds an important power over the regulation of the urban form. Local planning therefore has a significant impact on the developments’ fabric, although experience shows that this impact is most often negative. In the interaction with private stakeholders, whether they are the developers (lotisseurs) and their designers (concepteurs), or the inhabitants-project managers (habitants-maître d’ouvrage) and their builder (constructeurs), the municipality has many resources at his disposal to influence the projects quality. In this respect, this thesis highlights the central role that partner institutions play in this power relation, particularly for smaller municipalities. At these different moments, the aptitude of public regulation for improving quality depends on one essential variable: the political commitment of the stakeholders. Finally, the quality of the residential allotments also depends on a further element; whether or not the developers have a sense of morphological responsibility. Developers indeed maintain a room for manoeuver regarding morphology. Their behaviour at the conception level is consequently also decisive for the quality of the developments’ fabric

Abstract:

Abstract:
Background: Currently in France, participation rate in organised colorectal cancer (CRC) screening remains well below European guidelines, despite general practitioners involvement. Objectives: The overall objective of this thesis was to assess general practitioners practices in organized CRC screening, to understand barriers to screening participation and to assess strategies to improve patient participation to screening. Methods: Our work was based on data from the organised screening programme in the Val-de-Marne district. We conducted a retrospective cohort of 157 979 patients followed by 961 general practitioners, an action research among 21 volunteer general practitioners and a cluster-randomized controlled trial including 144 general practitioners and 20,778 patients. Results: A small part of the variability of the likelihood of participation was due to the heterogeneity among physicians (intraclass correlation coefficient, 5.5%). Screening participation was significantly lower in males (odds ratio [OR], 0.79; 95% CI, 0.78 to 0.91), the youngest age group (50-54 years, OR, 0.61; 95% CI, 0.58 -0.63; 55-59 years, OR, 0.76; 95% CI, 0.73-0.80) and patients living in socioeconomically deprived areas (OR, 0.82; 95% CI, 0.77-0.87).We have identified seven essential requirements for general practitioners when screening for CRC: Be proactive, Be partners in care, Take into consideration the patient's family and friends, Position themselves as the expert, Manage time efficiently, Explain the test procedure and Help carry out the test. We were able to identify techniques used for each requirement.Systematic reminders sent by post to general practitioners with the updated list of eligible patients for screening did not significantly improve patient participation to organised CRC screening after taking clustering into account (multilevel analysis). Conclusions: Targeted actions to improve CRC screening participation should focus on patients younger than 60 years, males, and individuals living in deprived areas. Actions to enhance the influence of general practitioners on patient participation should be directed to the overall population of general practitioners. Patient-centred care and reflective practice should be at the heart of initial and continuing medical education, and guidelines based on practice data should be proposed

Abstract:
AbstractRecent studies in biology, ecology, and medicine make it clear that relationships between living organisms are complex and comprise different forms of collaboration and communication in particular in getting food. It turns even out that relations of collaboration and valuing are more important than those of aggression and predation. I will outline the ways organisms select and value specific items in their network of living and non-living entities. No organism eats everything; all organisms prefer certain foods, companions, and habitats. Relations between organisms are established on the basis of communication, exchange of signs, actions and goods, through mutual learning processes on all levels of life. Micro, meso and macro organisms participate in this process of valuing and communication. Animals and plants therefore show features that were traditionally attributed only to humans, like selfless assistance. The usual distinction between humans and other living beings on the basis of human’s sensitivity for altruism, language and values crumbles down due to the circumstance that also non-human living beings are prone to selfless assistance, communication and valuing.

Abstract:
AbstractIn order to achieve a decarbonised energy system, change has to happen from electricity generation to the transmission grid over the distribution level all the way down to the industrial loads and the local households. To get involvement of communities in this energy transition, local participation is needed, so that the citizens can be aware of the impact of their energy-related actions on environment and climate. However, the energy system has typically been organised in a top-down fashion, with centralised approaches and little active control, resulting in passive grid and ditto customers. Smart grids have put active customers and consumer engagement as one of the cornerstones of a more intelligent energy infrastructure, which can be organised differently. Indeed, in different niches decentralised approaches have been used successfully (decoupled microgrids, peer-to-peer networks, etc.). This chapter explores how decentralised approaches can fit the future energy system and how it can empower people for engaging in the energy transition.

Abstract:
Cyanobacteria are photosynthetic micro-organisms colonizing all aquatic and terrestrial environments. The motility of such living micro-organisms should make their diffusion distinct from typical Brownian motion. This diffusion can be investigated in terms of global behavior (Fickian or not) and in terms of displacement probabilities, which provide more detail about the motility process. Using cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 as the model micro-organism, we carry out time-lapse video microscopy to track and analyze the bacteria’s trajectories, from which we compute the mean-squared displacement (MSD) and the distribution function of displacement probabilities. We find that the motility of Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 is intermittent: high-motility “run” phases are separated by low-motility “tumble” phases corresponding to trapped states. However, this intermittent motility leads to a Fickian diffusive behavior, as shown by the evolution of the MSD with time.

Abstract:
Abstract The motivation for this work has been a variety of motions like navigation of pipelines, insertion operations in assembly, and gripping actions, which require the adaptation of the mechanism to the external constraints, rather than avoid them. To this effect, efforts have been made towards building mechanisms that obtain the required degrees of freedom through deformations rather than explicit joints in them. Although the use of many joints provides the required number of degrees of freedom, it does so at the cost of making the system very bulky and complex. With the advent of new polymers, the possibility of building such mechanisms without joints, that fulfil the requirements of adaptation, have increased. Based on this approach, a Magneto Active Polymer (MAP) material has been developed in-house at the Texas A&M University, in which the actuation is performed by the conversion of electromagnetic energy into mechanical energy. The initial experimentation has proved the vast potential of the use of such a material, and a few mechanisms, like a magneto active peristaltic pump, have already been developed and tested, using this material. In this mechanism the pumping action is obtained when a moving magnetic field produces peristaltic waves in the magneto active material shaped as a tube. These waves help in pushing the fluid forward, in the tube. The advantage of this mechanism is that there is not physical contact of the actuating mechanism an the MAP tube, thereby reducing the wear. In developing the design for the peristaltic pump and other conceptual models described in this paper, ideas have been drawn from the different modes of locomotion and actuators used, in lower organisms and these have been good sources of inspiration for the work detailed in this paper.

Abstract:
Abstract In view of the situation that large amounts of marine sewage and organisms enter into the cooling water intake system of a coastal NPP at BeiBu-bay, China, which affects the safe and stable operation of NPP, the optimization research on blockage prevention in the water intake engineering is carried out. Based on the statistical analysis of a large number of NPPs’ cooling water source safety incidents globally, the hydraulic characteristics of shell debris in water-intake open channel are studied first, and the source of shell debris in the drum filter at the water intake pump room is analyzed. Secondly, the water intake layout project scheme is optimized through the wave model test, which can effectively improve the wave cover in the water intake channel. At last, through the wave physical model test, the overall force of the network is studied under the combined action of wind, wave, flow and sewage, and the anchoring foundation which can guarantee the stable operation of the trash-intercepting network is optimized. By carrying out the optimization design of water intake engineering, reducing the waves in channel, reducing the possibility of marine sewage and organisms entering the channel, adding the trash-intercepting network facilities and forming effective cover. It can not only effectively avoid or reduce the impact of marine sewage and organisms on the cooling water source safety of NPPs, but also minimize the loss of marine organisms during the operation of NPPs.

Abstract:
Could the future of our planet be decided on Zoom? The feasibility of “online climate negotiations” was the issue the OnCliNe project initially set out to assess. However, experiences over the last 18 months illustrated that many of the diverse activities organised under the umbrella of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) could be held online, albeit with challenges. The real question was whether they could be held in ways that increase the effectiveness, inclusiveness and transparency of the UNFCCC process. This report reflects the sentiment of many stakeholders that there is an opportunity to harness the interruption and introspection that the pandemic imposed into a “positive disruption” of the process. If actions taken now can transcend the tendency to return to “business as usual” as soon as circumstances allow, and instead work towards a meaningful transformation of the climate talks, the UNFCCC process can be made more fit for purpose for tackling one of humanity’s greatest challenges. This will require creativity, courage, and active and decisive leadership.

Full text
Abstract:
Prognostics and health management (PHM) frameworks are widely used in engineered systems, such as manufacturing equipment, aircraft, and vehicles, to improve reliability, maintainability, and safety. Prognostic information for impending failures and remaining useful life is essential to inform decision-making by enabling cost versus risk estimates of maintenance actions. These estimates are generally provided by physics-based or data-driven models developed on historical information. Although current models provide some predictive capabilities, the ability to represent individualized dynamic factors that affect system health is limited. To address these shortcomings, we examine the biological phenomenon of epigenetics. Epigenetics provides insight into how environmental factors affect genetic expression in an organism, providing system health information that can be useful for predictions of future state. The means by which environmental factors influence epigenetic modifications leading to observable traits can be correlated to circumstances affecting system health. In this paper, we investigate the general parallels between the biological effects of epigenetic changes on cellular DNA to the influences leading to either system degradation and compromise, or improved system health. We also review a variety of epigenetic computational models and concepts, and present a general modeling framework to support adaptive system prognostics.

Jorgensen, Frieda, Andre Charlett, Craig Swift, Anais Painset, and Nicolae Corcionivoschi. A survey of the levels of Campylobacter spp. contamination and prevalence of selected antimicrobial resistance determinants in fresh whole UK-produced chilled chickens at retail sale (non-major retailers). Food Standards Agency, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.46756/sci.fsa.xls618.

Full text
Abstract:
Campylobacter spp. are the most common bacterial cause of foodborne illness in the UK, with chicken considered to be the most important vehicle for this organism. The UK Food Standards Agency (FSA) agreed with industry to reduce Campylobacter spp. contamination in raw chicken and issued a target to reduce the prevalence of the most contaminated chickens (those with more than 1000 cfu per g chicken neck skin) to below 10 % at the end of the slaughter process, initially by 2016. To help monitor progress, a series of UK-wide surveys were undertaken to determine the levels of Campylobacter spp. on whole UK-produced, fresh chicken at retail sale in the UK. The data obtained for the first four years was reported in FSA projects FS241044 (2014/15) and FS102121 (2015 to 2018). The FSA has indicated that the retail proxy target for the percentage of highly contaminated raw whole retail chickens should be less than 7% and while continued monitoring has demonstrated a sustained decline for chickens from major retailer stores, chicken on sale in other stores have yet to meet this target. This report presents results from testing chickens from non-major retailer stores (only) in a fifth survey year from 2018 to 2019. In line with previous practise, samples were collected from stores distributed throughout the UK (in proportion to the population size of each country). Testing was performed by two laboratories - a Public Health England (PHE) laboratory or the Agri-Food & Biosciences Institute (AFBI), Belfast. Enumeration of Campylobacter spp. was performed using the ISO 10272-2 standard enumeration method applied with a detection limit of 10 colony forming units (cfu) per gram (g) of neck skin. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) to selected antimicrobials in accordance with those advised in the EU harmonised monitoring protocol was predicted from genome sequence data in Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli isolates The percentage (10.8%) of fresh, whole chicken at retail sale in stores of smaller chains (for example, Iceland, McColl’s, Budgens, Nisa, Costcutter, One Stop), independents and butchers (collectively referred to as non-major retailer stores in this report) in the UK that are highly contaminated (at more than 1000 cfu per g) with Campylobacter spp. has decreased since the previous survey year but is still higher than that found in samples from major retailers. 8 whole fresh raw chickens from non-major retailer stores were collected from August 2018 to July 2019 (n = 1009). Campylobacter spp. were detected in 55.8% of the chicken skin samples obtained from non-major retailer shops, and 10.8% of the samples had counts above 1000 cfu per g chicken skin. Comparison among production plant approval codes showed significant differences of the percentages of chicken samples with more than 1000 cfu per g, ranging from 0% to 28.1%. The percentage of samples with more than 1000 cfu of Campylobacter spp. per g was significantly higher in the period May, June and July than in the period November to April. The percentage of highly contaminated samples was significantly higher for samples taken from larger compared to smaller chickens. There was no statistical difference in the percentage of highly contaminated samples between those obtained from chicken reared with access to range (for example, free-range and organic birds) and those reared under standard regime (for example, no access to range) but the small sample size for organic and to a lesser extent free-range chickens, may have limited the ability to detect important differences should they exist. Campylobacter species was determined for isolates from 93.4% of the positive samples. C. jejuni was isolated from the majority (72.6%) of samples while C. coli was identified in 22.1% of samples. A combination of both species was found in 5.3% of samples. C. coli was more frequently isolated from samples obtained from chicken reared with access to range in comparison to those reared as standard birds. C. jejuni was less prevalent during the summer months of June, July and August compared to the remaining months of the year. Resistance to ciprofloxacin (fluoroquinolone), erythromycin (macrolide), tetracycline, (tetracyclines), gentamicin and streptomycin (aminoglycosides) was predicted from WGS data by the detection of known antimicrobial resistance determinants. Resistance to ciprofloxacin was detected in 185 (51.7%) isolates of C. jejuni and 49 (42.1%) isolates of C. coli; while 220 (61.1%) isolates of C. jejuni and 73 (62.9%) isolates of C. coli isolates were resistant to tetracycline. Three C. coli (2.6%) but none of the C. jejuni isolates harboured 23S mutations predicting reduced susceptibility to erythromycin. Multidrug resistance (MDR), defined as harbouring genetic determinants for resistance to at least three unrelated antimicrobial classes, was found in 10 (8.6%) C. coli isolates but not in any C. jejuni isolates. Co-resistance to ciprofloxacin and erythromycin was predicted in 1.7% of C. coli isolates. 9 Overall, the percentages of isolates with genetic AMR determinants found in this study were similar to those reported in the previous survey year (August 2016 to July 2017) where testing was based on phenotypic break-point testing. Multi-drug resistance was similar to that found in the previous survey years. It is recommended that trends in AMR in Campylobacter spp. isolates from retail chickens continue to be monitored to realise any increasing resistance of concern, particulary to erythromycin (macrolide). Considering that the percentage of fresh, whole chicken from non-major retailer stores in the UK that are highly contaminated (at more than 1000 cfu per g) with Campylobacter spp. continues to be above that in samples from major retailers more action including consideration of interventions such as improved biosecurity and slaughterhouse measures is needed to achieve better control of Campylobacter spp. for this section of the industry. The FSA has indicated that the retail proxy target for the percentage of highly contaminated retail chickens should be less than 7% and while continued monitoring has demonstrated a sustained decline for chickens from major retailer stores, chicken on sale in other stores have yet to meet this target.
