Abstract:
This chapter develops a critique of representationalist accounts of action. It shows that on any standard definition of representation, concepts such as minimal or action-oriented representations (AORs) are not really representational in any meaningful sense. It’s difficult to maintain, for example, that motor-control processes characterized in terms of AORs are decouplable from the specific action situation, or how they meet other constraints that define a process as representational. I argue that AORs no longer conform to the criteria that would make them representational, and that, at least

This chapter examines the principal element of the cause of action in negligence, namely breach of duty. The issue of breach of duty is concerned with whether the defendant was careless, in the sense of failing to conform to the standard of care applicable to him. The discussions cover the concept of breach of duty; the objective standard; professional and regulatory standards; weighing the risk and gravity of harm against the cost of prevention; and proof of carelessness.

In the current debate on the reform of association sanctioning, the Munich Draft (‘Münchner Entwurf eines Verbandssanktionengesetzes’) represents a proposal for a law with a sense of proportion. Unlike the Federal Ministry of Justice’s draft bill, the Munich Draft pursues a strictly commensurable way of sanctioning associations. For example, small associations are excluded from its scope of application, association responsibility, e.g. for actions taken by an employee against a superior’s orders, is explicitly excluded, and sanctions are differentiated between according to maximum turnover-rel

The breeder's equation often fails when applied to natural populations. In large part, this likely occurs because the assumed trait is not the actual target of selection. A within-generation change in the mean of a suggested target trait can arise as a correlated response from selection acting elsewhere. This chapter examines sources of error in the breeder's equation and approaches that attempt to determine if an assumed trait is actually the true target of selection. It also reviews a number of long-term studies from natural populations and examines possible sources for the failure of most o

The hard questions are: Is there an absolute value? Must we conform? Do we owe what our country asks of us? Is justice necessary? How should we respond to evil? Is it right to forgive wrong actions? Is shame good? Should we be true to who we are? Do good intentions justify bad actions? Should moral evaluations be overriding? These questions are hard because each has several reasonable but conflicting answers. Their conflicts show that we are ambivalent about what answer we should give when we have to make important decisions whose consequences affect us, our relationships, and our attitude to

Abstract In Breaking the Engagement: How China Won & Lost America, esteemed scholar David Shambaugh examines the evolution, expansion, and disintegration of the American engagement strategy toward China. For over four decades following the rapprochement between the United States and China in 1972, the two countries seemed to be steadily building a sound relationship, even accounting for periodic setbacks like the Tiananmen Square massacre. Since about 2016, though, the relationship has seen a sharp increase in tensions and a complete reorientation of American policies toward China—from eng

This chapter focuses on the moduli space of Riemann surfaces. The moduli space parameterizes many different kinds of structures on Sɡ, such as isometry classes of hyperbolic structures on S, conformal classes of Riemannian metrics on S, biholomorphism classes of complex structures on S, and isomorphism classes of smooth algebraic curves homeomorphic to S. The chapter first considers the moduli space as the quotient of Teichmüller space before discussing the moduli space of the torus. It then examines the theorem (due to Fricke) that Mod(S) acts properly discontinuously on Teich(S), with a fini

Abstract The 1950s are usually portrayed as conservative, conformist, and apathetic, but was there more to this much-maligned decade than that? In Britain, the convergence of conflicting political moments—the Cold War, the Bomb, the rise of America, the decline of the empire, welfare, and affluence—compelled a rapid rethinking of what it meant to ‘be political’ along with a series of experiments in democracy education. The Radical Fifties examines the distinctive ‘activist politics’ emerging from this by focusing on the entwined histories of its main protagonists: the Freedom Press anarchists,

Abstract Novel-Poetry examines the verse-novel, a hybrid genre that emerged in the middle decades of Britain’s nineteenth century, and makes a larger claim about both the nature of genre and formal structures for time, action, and identity that cross genres. The authors uncover trajectories of literary influence that have gone unseen because of how we have come to understand basic categories—such as lyric and narrative—that structure our approach to literature and affect how we shape our lives, lives which are often constrained by cause-and-effect, narrative-driven ways of approaching time and

This book reports on the first study into the role of pride and shame in social work practice. The concepts of pride, shame, guilt, humiliation, and embarrassment are outlined and analysed, providing a new framework for understanding and researching these emotions in professional practice. It is argued that these emotions are inherently part of practice, influencing what social workers do and how they do it. Such emotions are considered in the context of wider institutional processes that construct ideal forms of practice, which are then used to evaluate social workers’ actions and praise, sha

More recent publications which consider his better known films have initiated more sustained appreciation of Daves as a film-maker, but to date, no scholarly monograph has examined his full body of work. When the landmark Supreme Court case of Brown vs. Board of Education was handed down in 1954, many civil rights advocates believed that the decision, which declared public school segregation unconstitutional, would become the Holy Grail of racial justice. Fifty years later, despite its legal irrelevance and the racially separate and educationally ineffective state of public schooling for most black children, Brown is still viewed by many as the perfect precedent. Here, Derrick Bell shatters the shining image of this celebrated ruling. He notes that, despite the onerous burdens of segregation,
