Abstract:
This study focuses on the association between patient characteristics, which include both demographic and contextual factors, and patients' experiences with health care. The pre-existing literature provides rich information about patients' various demographics related to patient experience. Despite the abundance of empirical evidence showing that patients' demographics do affect how they perceive their health care. However, there is little to no empirical knowledge explaining the significance of such factors. As the existing literature points out the need for taking into contextual factors suc

Abstract:

Abstract:
Despite the interest in the neuroimaging of working memory, little is still known about the neurobiology of complex working memory in tasks that require simultaneous manipulation and storage of information. In addition to the central executive network, we assumed that the recently described salience network [involving the anterior insular cortex (AIC) and the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC)] might be of particular importance to working memory tasks that require complex, effortful processing. Method: Healthy participants (n = 26) and participants suffering from working memory problems related t

Abstract:
Increased platelet activation and inflammation play a key role in atherothrombosis. Patients with peripheral arterial disease are at increased risk of adverse cardiovascular events, particularly at the time of surgery. We postulated that the increase in peri-operative cardiovascular events is mediated by increased platelet activation and inflammation. We hypothesized that peri-operative dual anti-platelet therapy would improve biomarkers of atherothrombosis without causing unacceptable bleeding in patients undergoing surgery for critical limb ischaemia (CLI). Barnes, Gareth David. "Cardiovascular actions of apelin-receptor agonism during Renin-Angiotensin system activation, exercise and in patients with chronic stable heart failure." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/25415.

Abstract:
The apelin-apelin receptor (APLNR) system is an important regulator of cardiovascular homeostasis both in health and disease. Principal actions of the apelin-APLNR system are positive inotropism, vasodilatation, diuresis and a potential anti-inflammatory role in vascular tissue. The significance of this system is highlighted in heart failure and pulmonary hypertension. Preclinical models of these diseases report downregulation of apelin- APLNR, whilst knockout strains develop more severe phenotypes, more rapidly. Moreover treatment with exogenous apelin retards or prevents disease progression.
