Abstract:
An innovative nanobiotechnological express method for the detection of metabolically active microorganisms is proposed. The method is based on the inherent feature of microbial cells to generate metal nanoparticles during their metabolic activity in the process of reducing cations added in the system. The resulting nanoparticles are a new solid crystalline phase and can be detected with high accuracy by various physical methods. The technique was successfully tested and proved to be effective in the study of microbial activity in both samples from various cold ecosystems and pure psychoactive

AbstractIn a previous paper Amman et al. By using the same model and dataset as in Beck and Wieland (J Econ Dyn Control 26:1359–1377, 2002), they find that the approximation method produces solutions close to those generated by the value function approach and identify some elements of the model specifications which affect the difference between the two solutions. They conclude that differences are small wh

This thesis presents a new active-passive treatment developed to reduce structural vibrations and their associated radiated sound. It is a contribution to the research of efficient and low cost devices that implement the advantages of active and passive noise control techniques. A theoretical model has been developed to investigate the potential of this new "active-passive distributed absorber". The model integrates new functions that make it extremely stable numerically. Using this model, a genetic algorithm has been used to optimize the shape of the active-passive distributed absorber. Proto

Simulating frictional contact is a challenging computational task and there exist a variety of techniques to do so. One such technique, the staggered projections algorithm, requires the solution of two convex quadratic program (QP) subproblems at each iteration. We introduce a method, SCHURPA, which employs a primal-dual active-set strategy to efficiently solve these QPs based on a Schur-complement method. A single factorization of the initial saddle point system and a smaller dense Schur-complement is maintained to solve subsequent saddle point systems. Exploiting the parallelizability and wa

This thesis uses the Immersed Boundary Method (IBM) to simulate the movement of a human heart. The IBM was developed by Charles Peskin in the 70’s to solve Fluid-Structure Interaction models (FSI). The heart is embedded inside a fluid (blood) which moves according to the Navier-Stokes equation. The Navier-Stokes equation is solved by the Spectral Method. Forces on the heart muscle can be divided into two kinds: Active Force and Passive Force. Passive includes the effect of curvature (Peskin’s model), spring model, and the torsional spring (or beam) model. Active force is modeled by the 3-eleme

The use of quantitative methods constitutes a standard component of the institutional investors’ portfolio management toolkit. In the last decade, several empirical studies have employed probabilistic or classification models to predict stock market excess returns, model bond ratings and default probabilities, as well as to forecast yield curves. The RoL method is a visual narrative method that helps people tell stories of the past, present, and future. Individuals can use this method to introduce themselves in a fun and descriptive way. A group can use it to understand and reflect on the past and imagine the future of a project. Besides, it can also be used to build a shared view of a process over time while acknowledging different and perhaps contradictory perspectives. The method uses drawings rather than text, making it useful in groups that do not share a common language. Metaphors from a river are used to explore aspects of a sto
