Abstract:
The Covid-19 pandemic has had unprecedented and dramatic consequences on the cultural activities and the development of tourism in italian cities. In the midst of this scenario, the Department of History, Archeology, Geography, Art, and the Performing Arts (SAGAS) of the University of Florence organized three days of online conferences in which representatives of political and cultural institutions, along with qualified observers, expressed their views on the future of cultural policy after the health crisis. This book is a collection of all those “voices on the future of our heritage” that spoke in this series of videoconferences. This publication aims at ensuring that they can be heard by a wider audience, to start a reflection on the possibility of redesigning Florence’s cultural and touristic offerings. To bring about such a change, it is necessary to think within a new framework, one that aims at integrating itineraries capable of embracing the entire city, its histories, and its communities.

Abstract:
This book contains the proceedings of the seminar held in Florence on 6 May 2011 within the framework of a research project of national scope funded by the Ministry of Education (MUIR). The principal inspiring aim is the quest for synergy between criminal law and administrative law in the activities aimed at fighting corruption. The 'final' interests damaged by corruption are fundamental (public safety, national economy), such as to demand the stigmatisation and efficacy inherent to the penal instrument. However, no less important is the prevention aspect recommended by the European and international institutions, which can be achieved through a real and effective reinforcement of administrative instruments, such as the prevention of conflicts of interest or the strengthening of the disciplinary system.

Abstract:
This Chapter 4 gives a nuanced picture of the role of mobile phones in economic activities in rural West Bengal. Rather than juxtaposing economic and social uses, it explores them in tandem. How are phones used instrumentally and socially, and how do these different uses mesh and interrelate? The chapter also looks at how phone use influences social relationships, including their use for health care. Furthermore, the chapter assesses how the enhancement of logistical efficiency with the help of phones relates to development as economic growth and increased well-being. It highlights that not all people received equal economic benefits from phones. Phones have been most beneficial for the wealthiest entrepreneurs and large farmers. Those entrepreneurs whose markets extend outside the village have benefitted more than those who mainly market their products and services in the village.

Full text
Abstract:
To date, world antitrust and regulatory agencies have invariably described large technology companies—such as Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Apple, and Facebook—as dominant, bottleneck or gatekeeping companies comparable to the textbook monopolists of the early twentieth century. They have proceeded on this basis to discipline their business activities with unprecedented financial penalties and other regulatory obligations. This “techlash” is the subject of this book. Proceeding from the observation that big tech firms engage in both monopoly and oligopoly competition across digital markets, the book introduces a theory of moligopoly competition. It suggests that rivalry-spirited antitrust and regulatory laws are both conceptually and methodologically impervious to the competitive pressure that bears on big tech firms, resulting in a risk of well-intended but irrelevant policy intervention. The book proposes a refocusing of competition policy towards certain types of tipped markets where digital firms extract monopoly rents, and careful adoption of regulation toward other social harms generated by big tech’s business models.
