Romanowska, Iza. Agent-Based Modeling for Archaeology. SFI Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.37911/9781947864382.

Full text
Abstract:
To fully understand not only the past, but also the trajectories, of human societies, we need a more dynamic view of human social systems. Agent-based modeling (ABM), which can create fine-scale models of behavior over time and space, may reveal important, general patterns of human activity. Agent-Based Modeling for Archaeology is the first ABM textbook designed for researchers studying the human past. Appropriate for scholars from archaeology, the digital humanities, and other social sciences, this book offers novices and more experienced ABM researchers a modular approach to learning ABM and using it effectively. Readers will find the necessary background, discussion of modeling techniques and traps, references, and algorithms to use ABM in their own work. They will also find engaging examples of how other scholars have applied ABM, ranging from the study of the intercontinental migration pathways of early hominins, to the weather–crop–population cycles of the American Southwest, to the trade networks of Ancient Rome. This textbook provides the foundations needed to simulate the complexity of past human societies, offering researchers a richer understanding of the past—and likely future—of our species.

Tai, Eika. Comfort Women Activism. Hong Kong University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.5790/hongkong/9789888528455.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Based on extensive ethnographic work, Comfort Women Activism examines how women activists in Japan, Japanese and Koreans, have come to understand the comfort women issue. The movement in Japan has evolved as part of transnational activism, in which the activists in Japan play a crucial role in lobbying legislators and generating public opinion conducive to the state’s compensation. By presenting the activists’ narratives, the book illuminates the nuanced understandings of the issue they have developed through face-to-face communication with survivors. Their diverse voices shed light on the multifaceted aspects of the movement. The book also provides an account of the movement’s thirty-year history and an overview of scholarly arguments presented in Japanese. Many of the activists’ thoughts are relevant to scholarly debates on the comfort women issue, exemplifying, substantiating, and commenting on what researchers have said. By measuring the activist narratives against scholarly debates, the book argues that comfort women activism in Japan is a new form of feminism characterized by critical historical consciousness; the intersectionality of gender, ethnicity, and class; mutual transformation; and transnational solidarity. Most importantly, it argues that women activists in Japan, a former colonial empire, have avoided falling into imperialist feminism through the act of listening to survivors wholeheartedly.

Price, Cathy. The back pain revolution. Edited by Paul Farquhar-Smith, Pierre Beaulieu, and Sian Jagger. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780198834359.003.0014.

Full text
Abstract:
In 1997 Gordon Waddell and colleagues published a systematic review which explicitly challenged the assumption that back pain should always be treated by rest. Until this time, the belief that back pain was a sign of injury was deeply held, and many surgeries had been performed, often with poor results. The paper, together with the subsequent book The Back Pain Revolution, led to a paradigm shift in the way that back pain was managed: bed rest was no longer actively prescribed; instead, a return to activity was encouraged. This paper is also important because it was one of the first systematic reviews related to pain. However, further systematic reviews on the subject have found only small differences in the success rates of activity-based versus traditional treatments of back pain. Thus, despite the paper being published nearly 20 years ago, there is still a call for further work in this area.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter provides an overview of intrusion operations and applies them to the security dilemma. It works through how offensive cyber operations work and distils important principles. This is based off the well-known cyber kill chain models that explain cyber operations in an accessible fashion. The chapter shows as well how these principles can lead to escalation and provide incentives for states to launch network intrusions in advance of conflict. It is this incentive to launch intrusions early that creates activity that could be misperceived by another nation.

Tsutsui, Kiyoteru. Burakumin. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190853105.003.0004.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter first examines the history of Burakumin activism to combat discrimination against them based on their former outcaste status, which by the 1970s had established them as an influential group that had secured some successes. However, social discrimination against Burakumin persisted, and Burakumin activists explored different ways to fight it. Global human rights emerged as a prominent source of legitimacy for their activism and they began engaging with international human rights institutions. Initially intended to advance their own issues, their international engagement developed into a new pillar for their activism that focused on protecting minority rights across the globe, resulting in the establishment of a new international NGO with a UN consultative status, the International Movement against All Forms of Discrimination and Racism (IMADR). Through IMADR, they expanded global human rights by establishing a new rights norm against discrimination based on descent and work.

Tse, Jeanie, and Serena Yuan Volpp, eds. A Case-Based Approach to Public Psychiatry. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780190610999.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Expert public psychiatrists use case studies to share best practice strategies in this clinically oriented introduction to community mental health. Today, the majority of psychiatrists work with people who suffer not only from mental illness but also from poverty, trauma, social isolation, and discrimination. Psychiatrists cannot do this work alone but, instead, are part of teams of behavioral health workers navigating larger health care and social service systems. In an increasingly complex health care environment, mental health clinicians need to master systems-based practice in order to provide optimal care to their patients. The rapid development of public psychiatry training programs is a response to the learning needs of psychiatrists in an evolving system. This book begins with seven foundational principles of public psychiatry—recovery, trauma-informed care, integrated care, cultural humility, harm reduction, systems of care, and financing care—using cases to bring these concepts to life. Then, using a population health framework, cases are used to explore the typical needs of different age groups or vulnerable populations and to illustrate evidence-based/best practices that have been employed to meet these needs. Common to all of the chapters is a focus on the potential of each person, regardless of illness, to achieve personal goals, supported by a clinician who is also an advocate, activist, and leader.

Woldoff, Rachael A., and Robert C. Litchfield. Digital Nomads. Oxford University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190931780.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Digital nomads are knowledge workers who actively seek a lifestyle of freedom, using technology to perform their work remotely, traveling far and wide, and moving as often as they like. They have left their local coffee shops behind and now proudly post their “office of the day” photos from exotic locales, but what do their lives really look like? This book takes readers into an expatriate digital nomad community in Bali, Indonesia, and presents new manifestations of classic questions about community, creativity, and the role of place in the modern human ecosystem. It explains why digital nomads leave their creative class cities behind, arguing that creative class workers, though successful, often feel that their “world class cities” and desirable jobs are anything but paradise. This book follows nomads’ work transitions into freelancing, entrepreneurship, and remote jobs. Then, it explains how digital nomads create a fluid but intimate place-based community abroad in the company of like-minded others. It shows why and how individuals blend in-person and online activity in their pursuit of community and freedom. This book provides insights into individuals’ efforts to live lives and create work identities that balance freedom, community, and creative fulfillment in the digital age, and it provides insights into a larger cultural discourse about the future of cities, work, and community.

Lorino, Philippe. Semiotic mediation at the heart of organizing. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198753216.003.0002.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter starts with the critique of the representationalist mainstream, based on the reality/representation dichotomy, narrating two cases. In the first case, a merger between two mass distribution companies raises a conflict between two distinct views of the logistics mission, conveyed by performance indicators. In the second case, the efforts of a construction company to improve work safety were hampered by the separation between project design and planning, on the one hand, and on-site construction, on the other, instantiated in the day-to-day work situations by a few conventional wisdoms. The pragmatist alternative to dualist representationalism, the semiotic mediation of situated activity, is presented. It responds to the need to relate the singular act, performed here and now, with broader meaning-making perspectives, rooted in history and sociality, and to continuously redefine the situation. The chapter puts forward Peirce’s theory of thirdness and triadic sign, and examines how it can be applied to organized activity.
