The article deals with the peculiarities in the activity of the Extraordinary Diplomatic Mission of the Ukrainian People’s Republic (EDM of the UPR) in Romania during 1921, when the whole territory of Ukraine was occupied by Bolshevik troops. In those circumstances, the State Centre of the Ukrainian People’s Republic in exile considered Romania as its important military and political partner in the struggle for Ukraine’s independence. For its part, the then Romanian leadership was deeply interested in the existence of independent Ukraine, primarily as a military and political buffer between Ro

The main goal is to develop an understanding of how the NKA activity regulates the cell junction proteins. The investigated proteins are the adherens junction protein ECadherin, and the tight junction proteins Occludin and Claudin7.The NKA is inhibited by introducing the cardiotonic steroid Ouabain to the cells. The treatment is tested for different time lapse and different concentrations. The results show that all proteins are down regulated when treated with high concentrations (

The main organic constituent of bone, type I collagen, has a highly organized and tightly packed structure and is resistant to proteolysis by most proteases. One of the obligatory steps in the signaling cascade is the activation of K+-influx channels -K+ channels activated by hyperpolarization (KH channels). We thus explored the regulation of these channels in our model system, motor cell protoplasts from Samanea saman, using patch-clamp in the "whole cell" configuration. p-Methoxycinnamic acid (p-MCA) is a cinnamic acid derivative that shows various pharmacologic actions such as neuroprotective and hepatoprotective activities. To examine the insulinotropic activity of p-MCA, the perfused rat pancreas and a pancreatic β-cell line, INS-1 were used in the studies. P-MCA increased insulin secretion from the perfused rat pancreas and INS-1 cells in a concentration-dependent manner. In addition, p-MCA increased intracellular Ca²⁺ concentration ([Ca²⁺]i) in INS-1 cells. The p-MCA-induced insulin secretion and rise in [Ca²⁺]i were markedly inhibited in the absence of

Abstract:
MK-1, the target molecule of FU-MK-1, is encoded by the GA733-2 gene, which is currently being used as a target in clinical trials for gastric, intestinal, and biliary cancer treatment with monoclonal antibodies. Here, two different arrangement of heavy-chain and K light-chain variable fusion gene, IL2/FUscFv(VK-VH) or IL2/FUscFv(VWVK), were constructed. The efficiency of protein expression in prokaryotic host expression system, Escherichia coli strains BL21(DE3)pLysS and Rosetta-gami B was compared with eukaryotic host expression system, Pichia pastoris strains GS115 and KM71H, for their abil

Original objectives (revisions from original proposal are highlighted) 1. Elucidate the direct effects O3 and H2O2 on guard cell function, utilizing assays of stomatal response in isolated epidermal peels and whole cell gas exchange. 2. Determine the mechanistic basis of O3 and H2O2 effects on the plasma membrane through application of the electrophysiological technique of patch clamping to isolated guard cells. 3. Determine the relative sensitivity of Israeli cultivars of economically important crops to O3 and determine whether differential leaf conductance responses to O3 can explain relativ

Abstract:
Understanding how RNA viruses cause disease symptoms in their hosts is expected to provide information that can be exploited to enhance modern agriculture. The helper component-proteinase (HC-Pro) protein of potyviruses has been implicated in symptom development. Previously, we demonstrated that symptom expression is associated with binding of duplex small-interfering-RNA (duplex-siRNA) to a highly conserved FRNK amino acid motif in the HC-Pro of Zucchini yellow mosaic virus (ZYMV). This binding activity also alters host microRNA (miRNA) profiles. In Turnip mosaic virus (TuMV), which infects t

This report describes activity conducted in several lines of research associated with field-scale water and solute processes. A major effort was put forth developing a stochastic continuum analysis for an important class of problems involving flow of reactive and non reactive chemicals under steady unsaturated flow. The field-scale velocity covariance tensor has been derived from local soil properties and their variability, producing a large-scale description of the medium that embodies all of the local variability in a statistical sense. Special cases of anisotropic medium properties not alig
