The purpose was to explore community readiness to adopt physical activity (PA) policies by adapting and pilot testing an online survey (Physical Activity Readiness Survey [PARS]). PARS was adapted from the previously tested Community Readiness Survey-Short. In February/April 2016, key informants ( N = 17) involved in PA activities from two rural communities were invited to complete the PARS, representing six dimensions: knowledge, leadership, resources, community climate, existing voluntary PA policies, and political climate. Abstract The objective of this study evaluated the accuracy and repeatability when determining cull sow body condition scores (BCS) evaluated by scorers utilizing digital images. Participants (n=6) were selected based on previous BCS scoring on live sows. Group standards were established utilizing the scores from two participants with extensive experience BCS sows. Other scorers were not provided training before they scored images and no “scorer calibration” activity occurred to ensure that each scorer was observing similar traits when applying BCS. The objectives of the present study were to use scale-activity and scale-exit scores to (1) determine the extent to which selection for improved residual feed intake (RFI) correlates with individual gilt temperament, (2) determine whether the timing of assessment affects the scores, and (3) determine whether gilts habituate to the process of weighing. To achieve these objectives, 192 grow–finish purebred Yorkshire gilts (39.7 ± 5.7 kg; 98 ± 6 days old) were utilised. Abstract:
Abstract Molecular gene-expression datasets consist of samples with tens of thousands of measured quantities (e.g., high dimensional data). However, there exist lower-dimensional representations that retain the useful information. We present a novel algorithm for such dimensionality reduction called Pathway Activity Score Learning (PASL). The major novelty of PASL is that the constructed features directly correspond to known molecular pathways and can be interpreted as pathway activity scores. Hence, unlike PCA and similar methods, PASL’s latent space has a relatively straight-forward biological interpretation. As a use-case, PASL is applied on two collections of breast cancer and leukemia gene expression datasets. We show that PASL does retain the predictive information for disease classification on new, unseen datasets, as well as outperforming PLIER, a recently proposed competitive method. We also show that differential activation pathway analysis provides complementary information to standard gene set enrichment analysis. The code is available at https://github.com/mensxmachina/PASL.

Abstract:
Physical activity is one of the most basic human functions, and it is an important foundation of health throughout life. Physical activity apports benefit on both physical and mental health, reducing the risk of several diseases and lowering stress reactions, anxiety and depression. More specifically, physical activity is defined as "any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles that require energy expenditure" (World Health Organization), including in this definition several activities. Among them, walking has been shown to improve physical and mental well-being in every age group. Despite that, insufficient walking among university students has been increasingly reported, requiring walking promotion intervention. In order to do this, dividing students based on their intention to walk might be useful since the intention is considered as the best predictor of behaviour. In this work, we carried out a study on university students' intention to walk and some of its predictors by exploiting Item Response Theory (IRT) models. In particular, we inspected the predictors of intention by mean of Rating Scale Graded Response Model (RS-GRM). Then we used the Latent Class IRT model to divide students according to their intention to walk, including predictors' scores as covariates. We chose the intention's predictors according to an extension of the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB), with both classic and additional variables. The formers are attitude toward behaviour, subjective norms, and perceived behavioural control, whereas we used risk perception, self-efficacy, anticipation, self-identity and anticipated regret as additional variables. Data was collected administrating a self-report questionnaire to undergraduate students enrolled in the Psychology course at Federico II University of Naples.
