Abstract:
Last Acts: The Art of Dying on the Early Modern Stage argues that the Elizabethan and Jacobean theater offered playwrights, actors, and audiences important opportunities to practice arts of dying. Early modern plays also engage with devotional traditions that understand death less as an occasion for suffering or grieving than as an action to be performed, well or badly. Active deaths belie the narratives of helplessness and loss most often used to analyze representations of mortality and instead suggest ways that marginalized and constrained subjects might participate in the political, social, and economic management of life. Some of these strategies for dying resonate with ecclesiastical forms or with descriptions of biopolitics within the recent work of Giorgio Agamben and Roberto Esposito. Yet the art of dying is not solely a discipline imposed upon recalcitrant subjects. Since it offers suffering individuals a way to enact their deaths on their own terms, it discloses both political and dramatic action in their most minimal manifestations. Rather than mournfully marking what we cannot recover, the practice of dying reveals what we can do, even in death. By analyzing representations of dying in plays by writers including Christopher Marlowe, William Shakespeare, and Ben Jonson alongside both devotional texts and contemporary biopolitical theory, Last Acts shows how theater reflects, enables, and contests the politicization of life and death.

Abstract:
This chapter offers several ways to think about how music appeared in Porter's social world. The term “musicking,” coined by musicologist Christopher Small to incorporate all musical performance acts, from composing to playing to listening to dancing, under a single rubric, is an excellent label for Porter, whose personal performances were as central to his life as his songwriting. He was a consummate musicker: his passion for music was always socially embedded to a degree that complicated any straightforward decontextualization. And in this respect, he was united with many of his friends and allies. This becomes clear from a brief account of his earlier career.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the role of precaution as applied to climate change. Article 3 of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) specifically calls for precautionary measures to anticipate, prevent, or minimize the causes of climate change and mitigate its adverse effects. Because climate change poses uncertain but serious and even catastrophic risks, and because greenhouse gas emissions have latent and long-lasting effects which last over decades and even centuries, precautionary action is widely urged as essential to preventing future climate change—rather than waiting to act after the damage is done, when it is too late to address the cause. The chapter describes the key features of the Precautionary Principle (PP), and illustrates the advance of the PP across the terrain of national and international law and also the variation among its proliferating versions established by various scholars, such as Per Sandin, David VanderZwaag, and Christopher Stone.

Abstract:
Heroic tales recount violence, which can be defined as a deliberate assault on the body of another against their will. The act of violence is a culmination of courage, determination, contempt for rules and the power to act; violence appears as a paradigmatic test of the individual. Violence forces those involved to position themselves in relation to it – perpetrators as well as victims, participants as well as bystanders, contemporaries as well as descendants. In this volume, three perspectives on the heroization, endurance and avoidance of violence structure different literary, historical, cultural and sociological approaches to identifying the relationship between the heroic and physical violence. An introductory essay identifies theoretical intersections between violence and heroism. With contributions by Ronald G. Asch, Cornelia Brink, Ulrich Bröckling, Olmo Gölz, Joachim Grage, Felix K. Maier, Vera Marstaller, Christoph Mauntel, Sotirios Mouzakis, Friederike Pannewick, Jan Philipp Reemtsma, Sven Reichardt and Cornel Zwierlein.

Abstract:
Social networks, payment services, gaming platforms - they all have sophisticated sets of rules governing the use of their services. Just as complex are the systems with which these private actors enforce their rules. Automated, human or hybrid decision-making structures are designed to provide efficient and equitable rule enforcement. Due to the high relevance of these platforms, current regulatory projects such as the Digital Services Act are attempting to establish clear rules for these private decision-making structures. This anthology gathers empirical and theoretical contributions that explore questions about institutionalization, legitimacy and consequences of this development. With contributions by RAin Dr. Bettina Bacher; Steliyana Doseva; Rita Gsenger, M.A.; Prof. Dr. Dirk Heckmann; Alexandra Keiner, M.A; Christoph König; Dr. Johanne Kübler; Ferdinand Müller; Amelie Röhling; Finn Schädlich; Jan Schillmöller; Prof. Dr. Hanna Schmid-Petri; Simon Schrör, M.A.; Dr. Ben Wagner and Johannes Weil.
