Lunkka, N. (Nina). "Making sense of hospital change project actuality." Doctoral thesis, Oulun yliopisto, 2018. http://urn.fi/urn:isbn:9789526219134.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract The purpose of this dissertation is to describe and increase understanding of hospital change project actuality. Project actuality means various level social processes that go on in hospital change projects and through which people in project perceive reality. A way to capture hospital change project actuality is to focus on little-studied project participants’ lived experiences, i.e., reflexive actors’ situational thinking. Approaching hospital change project participants’ lived experiences through a Weickian sensemaking perspective, this dissertation investigates hospital change project actuality in one university hospital in Finland. Sensemaking means a process through which people generate meanings for their experiences and it provides a well-grounded perspective to focus on lived experiences in hospital change projects. The study is a qualitative case study consisting of three sub-studies, which consist of four interrelated articles. The first sub-study explores hospital change projects as a context for sensemaking from mid-level nurse managers’ viewpoint. The second sub-study investigates the role of emotions in the process of nurse managers’ sensemaking of change in a hospital project. The third sub-study examines different project participants’ discursive sensemaking of their lived project work experiences in hospital and introduces a discursive sensemaking perspective as a conceptual framework to study lived experiences through discourses. The primary data consist of 37 interviews, which were analyzed deploying different qualitative analysis methods, so deductive content analysis, discourse analysis and narrative analysis. The first sub-study shows that hospital projects provide a reasonable context for sensemaking of change, however, hierarchy between different professions may obscure it. The second sub-study indicates that poorly experienced change facilitation maintains negative emotions influencing also plausibility of the organizational change in hospital project. The third sub-study suggests that high expectations regarding project-based work seem not to realize in practice in hospital. All in all, the study shows that hospital change projects actualize as paradoxal processes that are characterized by tensions between collaboration, competition and control
Tiivistelmä Väitöskirjan tarkoituksena on kuvailla ja lisätä ymmärrystä sairaalan muutosprojektien aktuaalisuudesta. Aktuaalisuudella tarkoitetaan eritasoisia sosiaalisia prosesseja, joiden kautta sairaalan muutosprojektien toimijat hahmottavat todellisuutta ympärillään. Sitä voidaan tarkastella projektiin osallistuvien ihmisten kokemuksellisuuden eli refleksiivisten toimijoiden tilanteisen ajattelun kautta. Väitöskirjassa tutkitaan sairaalan muutosprojektien aktuaalisuutta Weickiläisen merkityksellistämisen näkökulman kautta yhden yliopistosairaalan kontekstissa Suomessa. Merkityksellistäminen tarkoittaa prosessia, jonka kautta toimijat kehittävät merkityksiä kokemuksilleen voidakseen toimia mielekkäästi. Se tarjoaa perustellun näkökulman sairaalan muutosprojektien aktuaalisuuden tarkasteluun. Tutkimus on laadullinen tapaustutkimus koostuen kolmesta osatutkimuksesta, jotka puolestaan koostuvat neljästä artikkelista. Ensimmäinen osatutkimus tarkastelee sairaalan projekteja merkityksellistämisen kontekstina ylihoitajien näkökulmasta. Toinen osatutkimus tutkii osastonhoitajien tunteiden roolia muutoksen merkityksellistämisen prosessissa sairaalan projektissa.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis presents the findings of an investigation into contemporary psychic phenomena as reported by Australian students. It asks the question: ¡¥do people experience psychic phenomena?¡¦ The study is an empirical one of reported psychic phenomena. It uses a questionnaire which involves the matching of perceptions of specific psychic phenomena, rather than an examination of psychic phenomena as such. The questionnaire is based on a medical diagnostic model. Its findings are benchmarked against a previous study and compared with other empirical studies. A comparison of the study's findings with those of more directly religious investigations undertaken overseas in countries with a longer monotheistic religious history than Australia: provides insight into the Australian attitude, generally recognised as being secular, towards psychic and or spiritual experiences; indicates that meditation is not necessarily a prerequisite for experience of psychic and or spiritual phenomena; and argues that commonalities between specific experiences, reported not only within the Australian secular survey but also as reported in the predominantly religious overseas studies, demonstrate that the scientific requirement of repeatability has been met, thus providing ground to believe in the actuality of the reported experiences.

Abstract:
This essay investigates Haukioja's (2010) notion of actuality-dependence. This notion is an attempt to explain the rigid behaviour of some kind terms; in particular natural kind terms like “water” and “tiger”. A definition of rigidity for kind terms has to take in account speakers' semantic intentions. This, together with the fact that actuality-dependence can only be applied successfully to a kind term if the members of its extension all share an underlying, non-trivial property, makes the notion of actuality-dependence face the problem of reference failures. A speaker's intention for a certain term to be actuality-dependent might fail, in the sense that the members of the kind picked out by the term in question lack underlying properties of the right sort. Three ways to solve this issue are shown to be unsatisfactory, ultimately leading to the conclusion that actuality-dependence cannot be the semantic feature that single out natural kind terms as semantically special.

Kendrick, Lynne. "Acting to actuality : the impact of the ludic on performer training." Thesis, Goldsmiths College (University of London), 2010. http://research.gold.ac.uk/11029/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis argues that the impact of the ludic on performer training can be analysed by the application of play theory. Theories of play are apt for analysis of the emergence of ludic performance practices, in particular how the ludic functions as a basis for training for these. This thesis analyses the ludic practices in the postLecoquian performer training of Philippe Gaulier, John Wright and Jon Davison and focuses specifically on the workshop. Their respective techniques are infiltrating performer training in the UK and as a consequence the activities and languages of play are becoming accepted, yet there is little analysis or understanding of how these ludic practices function. The research questions for this thesis ask what is the ludic and what are its potential intersections with performance analysis? What is the interplay between ludus (structure) and the paidic (free)? And what is the relation between play and actuality? To respond to the first question I provide an overview of the scope of play theory in particular its relation to cultural theory, performance analysis and the paradigm of Performance Studies and I isolate a methodology based on Roger Caillois' play theory of ludus and paidia. This methodolqgy is formed in order to address the second thesis question and to explore how the ludic interplay between structure and freedom functions in performer training. I use Caillois' continuum of ludus/paidia to analyse the ludicity of Gaulier, Wright and Davison's respective techniques as manifested in the workshop format and I propose that the result of this analysis reveals a paidic aesthetic of training and performing. 'Acting to actuality' refers to the development of training from representative to presentative performance in which realism and modes of realistic performance are eschewed for the reality of the presence of the performer and the activities in which the performer is engaged. This thesis also explores the function of the ludic in this shift, particularly in relation to the emergence of clown performance and argues that a paidic aesthetic produces an actual, not an acted, performance.

Nowadays studies confirm that changes continue to occur in project management in both the practitioner and research fields. Organizations increasingly use projects and project management discipline to achieve business objectives but results often fall short of goals. Although project management has become a core business process for many organizations at strategic and operational level, there is still much to understand about project actuality in software development organizations. Besides, much is written about how to manage projects, but too little on what really happens in Project Actuality. Project Actuality debut in the Rethinking Project Management (RPM) agenda in 2006 aiming at understanding what really happens at project context. This research intends to understand, explain and explore this phenomenon. In order to understand the challenges faced by software project nowadays, we have to go beyond the triple constant (effort, cost and scope), its processes and technology. In pursuance of project management we must understand team’s context, routine, problems, organizational culture, the entire project actuality phenomenon. Traditional theories used to understand and explain the world of management make different assumptions about actuality, scientific knowledge, ethics, values and context. This research’s main objective is to create an approach to investigate, observe and analyze software project actuality and to support team reflection and project rethinking, and by using the approach, unveil the findings of six small software development organizations. The finding will give visibility on project actuality in six organizations, its projects and teams. Even though the findings are context dependent, some causes, effects, disturbance factors can help the understanding of this sector and assist researches and practitioners to see new ways of thinking project management. In order to achieve that goal, an Exploratory Review (ER) and a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) were conducted on project actuality. Based on the knowledge acquired on the ER and SLR, an approach was defined and refined enabling us to observe, analyze and understand project actuality and its contexts. Six case studies using the approach were conducted in order to refine the approach and to explain the critical issues surrounding the actuality in software projects management in micro and small organizations. Action research helped the team to engage on reflection and action, in order to evolve as project and organization based on the project actuality observed.

Abstract:
Public opinion is largely shaped by mass media communications. The number of conversational canvases from which we source media has proliferated since the democratization of content distribution made possible by digital. While on the surface this may seem as though more perspectives give rise to a more informed society, in fact what has been demonstrated is an expansion of contrived and controlled messaging, misinformation and disinformation. As vehicles of the moving image television, cinema, digital media, and even forms of surveillance video, are of the most influential and addictive apparatuses for content consumption of the 20th and 21st centuries. Audio-visual mediums have an immersive quality capable of persuasive extremities: able to effectively falsify historical events, reprogramming our understanding of history; and, on the contrary more capable than any other medium to render the lived condition, or life as it is. In relation to the later, the domain of documentary is typically recognised as being ‘the’ genre advocating truth, given its heritage to the referential, the indexical, and the direct record. This research, though, concerns itself with the revelation of truth in the fiction of social realist cinema. It is the argument of this dissertation that the realist attitude, which has an impulse to focus on stories of marginalization, and is less encumbered by virtue of being made independently – that is outside of the film studio system - is a necessary art form to balance the biased conscious purported by the agenda of mass media.

McCuaig, Nicole M. "Transmitting the Impulse: The Creative Treatment of Ronald McCuaig's Poetry and Actuality." Thesis, Griffith University, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/404460.

Full text
Abstract:
The object of this research is to expand the practice of archiveology, a term coined by Joel Katz in 1991 and theorised more recently by Catherine Russell to describe the process of reusing found archival footage in expository documentary to “produce new modes of thinking about the past” (2018, 47). This research will experiment with poetry as a source of archive, adding to the more commonly deployed materials such as film, still photographs, or letters used in documentary production. The intention of the work is to illuminate the literary career of the Australian poet Ronald McCuaig (1908–1993), who was also my grandfather. Ronald McCuaig was described by Australian author Geoffrey Dutton as “Australia’s first modern poet” (1986, 49), and was widely respected for his literary contribution, which spanned from the 1930s to the 1990s. In recent years, however, his work and career had begun to fade from view. As an established documentary filmmaker, I have completed a significant practice-based study, experimenting with production methods for multiplatform outcomes. The rich archive collection that emerged throughout the study led me to question how it is possible to do justice to literature through my usual documentary practice. I have initiated a hermeneutical experiment, re-versioning McCuaig’s literary work—predominantly poetry—through the methodologies of archiveology and videopoetry. Over the past ten years, audience screening options and spaces have changed dramatically, providing opportunities to develop work that provides for a multifaceted viewing experience, adding online spaces to traditional cinema or television viewing. These options provide an opportunity to experiment with archiveological practices for new viewing artefacts such as videopoems. I aim to demonstrate the impact of Ronald McCuaig’s original work and its potential to provide powerful social commentary, still of relevance in 2020, using Walter Benjamin’s ‘dialectical image’ as a conceptual framework. The outcome of poetry from the 1930s, reimagined into videopoetry with companion documentary sequences, results in a synthesis and an unusual and expanded outcome for a documentary filmmaker: a gallery exhibition. Rather than a single screening event, the exhibition includes multiple screening spaces, a material culture collection, furniture installations, an exhibition publication, digitised original anthologies, and an online space. The combination of these outputs and proposed future endeavours provides audiences with a more visceral connection to the poet, his life and work.

Abstract:

This project sets out to answer the following question: according to Aristotle, what does movement contribute to or change about being? The first part works through the argument for the existence of movement in the Physics. This argument includes distinctive innovations in the structure of being, notably the simultaneous unity and manyness of being: while material and form are one thing, they are two in being. This makes it possible for Aristotle to argue that movement is not intrinsically related to what is not: what comes to be does not emerge from non-being, it comes from something that is in a different sense. The second part turns to the Metaphysics to show that and how the lineage of potency and activity the inquiry into movement. A central problem is that activity or actuality, energeia, does not at first seem to be intrinsically related to a completeness or end, telos. With the unity of different senses of being at stake, Aristotle establishes that it is by showing that activity or actuality is movement most of all, and that movement has and is a complete end. Thus, it is movement that leads Aristotle to conclude that substance and form are energeia, and that unity of being is possible

Abstract:
The thesis concerns the treatment of actuality in film and television, particularly the narrativization of actuality images, and the context of their placement within audio/visual texts. Several instances of the convergence of media form and genre are analyzed, and the conventions of classificatory systems and boundaries that pertain to film and television representations are reconsidered in light of changes in the conventions of genre. The distinction between, and convergence of fictional and non-fictional conventions of narrative are therefore central to the thesis, as are the related issues of viewer response, the nature of subjectivity in the viewer, the connectivity of text and culture, and the relations of actuality to the text. The thesis traces the narrativization of actuality through textual, formal and genre boundaries, adopting a ‘line of flight or deterritorialization’ that enables the thesis to ‘change in nature and connect with other multiplicities.’This line of flight passes through the conventional separation of genre groupings and texts, and, similarly, has been applied in the thesis as a rationale for the diminution of theoretical boundaries. A multiperpectival approach is applied to the permeability of, or transcendent relations of the analysis to the boundaries between genres, between texts and culture, and between actuality and virtual representation. In the thesis there is also a theoretical deterritorialization that consents to a pluralism of theory, which is an approach demonstrated by Deleuze and Guattari in A Thousand Plateaus. The model of multi-perspectivalism adopted in the thesis engages in establishing connections and similarities between theories, rather than emphasizing contradictory and exclusive practices. The Foucauldian notion of the rules of formation in discourse, Nichols’ theories of documentary representation of reality, Bordwell’s schematic interpretation, and several other positions are critiqued, as the line of flight embarked upon in the thesis intersects with, and passes through both textual and theoretical boundaries. The thesis consists of two parts: firstly, a location of theoretical perspective, in which the issues of theory pertaining to actuality and narrative are explicated, and the methodological approach of the thesis is defined. The second part commences with an analysis of the most familiar instances of actuality in film and television, with particular attention to documentary forms. It then engages in the analysis of films that represent actuality but which, in the process of narrativization, display a convergence of genre conventions. The films selected for analysis include Steven Speilberg's Schindler's List, (1993) Oliver Stone's JFK, (1991) and Robert Zemeckis' Forrest Gump, (1994) and Contact, (1996). Hence the thesis is concerned with the application of a pluralist theoretical approach, with, however, an emphasis on the Deleuzo-Guattarian notions of rhizome and assemblage. Within this theoretical frame, the connections between actuality and the audio/visual text are explicated, and the formation of text as ‘a rhizome with the world’, is analyzed across a range of examples.

Abstract:
Political Science
Ph.D.
This dissertation is about the theoretical foundation of Hegel’s political argument. Its goal is to comprehend the basic structure of that argument by articulating the conceptual framework Hegel employs when he asserts that the particular set of political institutions he is arguing for is rational. Its argument is that the criterion Hegel employs in his conception of rationality is that an object is rational if and only if it is comprehended by thought in and through the holistic inferential system of concepts he refers to as the Concept (der Begriff). Hegel’s final argument in the Science of Logic is that there can be no actual object that is not “rational,” i.e., that is not constituted, in all of its determinations, by the unified activity of thinking that is the Concept. Consequently, it is argued that the rationality, and therewith the actuality, of Hegel’s rational state depicted in the Philosophy of Right derives from the fact that it is comprehended by thought in and through the totality as thought that is the Concept. Further, because the Science of Logic demonstrates the totality of actuality to be the constituted reflection of the Concept itself to itself, and because the Philosophy of Right depicts the objectivemental form of actuality in particular, it is argued that the Philosophy of Right is nothing more than the determinate reflection of the Science of Logic, the repetition of the movement of the pure logical Concept depicted therein at its highest level of determinateness. The comprehension by thought of the object of right in and through the Concept in the Philosophy of Right is therefore the Concept’s comprehension of itself, and this rational comprehension is indicated by Hegel through his presentation of the Philosophy of Right as the determinate reflection of the Science of Logic. This unified logical interpretation of Hegel’s political philosophy is opposed not only to recent “practical” interpretations which dispense entirely with Hegel’s theoretical philosophy, but also to recent transcendental interpretations which incorrectly attribute to Hegel the position that the determining activity of thought is limited to the form of the object of its cognition.

Abstract:
Addressing possibilities for authentic combinations of diverse media within an installation setting, this research tested hybrid blends of the physical, digital and temporal to explore liminal space and image. The practice led research reflected on creation of artworks from three perspectives – material, immaterial and hybrid – and in doing so, developed a new methodological structure that extends conventional forms of triangulation. This study explored how physical and digital elements each sought hierarchical presence, yet simultaneously coexisted, thereby extending the visual and conceptual potential of the work. Outcomes demonstrated how utilising and recording transitional processes of hybrid imagery achieved a convergence of diverse, experiential forms. "Hybrid authority" – an authentic convergence of disparate elements – was articulated in the creation and public sharing of processual works and the creation of an innovative framework for hybrid art practice.

Abstract:
Urban actuality films are short, single shot views of street scenes, skyscrapers or construction sites, or views from moving vehicles. They are, typically, regarded as simple filmic snap-shots. Conversely, early cinema is conventionally thought to be a complex hybrid medium, a crucible for the idea and representation of the modern. Through close, contextualised analysis of a series of New York films, this study addresses the discrepancy between the putative insubstantiality of actuality films and the evident complexity of early cinema. A hitherto overlooked historical coincidence of actuality cinema, the modernisation of New York and its intermedial culture is shown to provide both a subject and setting for filmmakers. Actuality cinema is a technology of the present; accordingly, temporality is pivotal for this study. Tom Gunning's 'cinema of attractions' thesis and a neurological conception of modernity posit a familiar shocks-and-jolts axis of the relations between cinema and modernity. In contrast, I argue for an alternative axis, founded in periods, rather than moments, of time and seek to demonstrate cinema's role as a technology of an expanded present time. Fifteen films of transport systems, skyscraper building sites and ways of seeing New York's streets, make up the primary source material. In these films, time provides a space for the representation and negotiation of the modern. An expanded present fosters a thickened visuality. Within New York's intermedial culture, the adoption of stereoscopic visual practices was key to constructing a coherent filmic present, and a place for the spectator within a cinematic world. As a functioning space and time machine, a cinema of simultaneity, the complexity of actuality filmmaking practices increasingly moved actualities towards, and enabled their interrelation with, an emerging narrative cinema. Rather than a failed experiment, New York actuality cinema is here demonstrated to be an example of cinema working.

Abusulaiman, Jumanah. "Modality in Makkan Arabic: The Interaction Between Modals and Aspect." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/39930.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation explores the interaction between modality and aspect in Makkan Arabic (MA). There is some consensus in the semantic literature regarding the treatment of modal expressions that may obtain various flavours, such as epistemic, deontic, bouletic, ability, necessity or teleological. These various modal flavours can be captured by a unified lexical entry, and are identified by contextual factors Kratzer (1977, 1981, 1991, 2012). There is some debate regarding the structural location of modal elements, some of which have been argued to be high (the case of epistemic modals) and others low (the case of root modals) (e.g. Cinque (1999)). The relative scope of modals has been subject of much recent work on modality, in particular in relation to their interaction with temporal categories such as aspect. This thesis investigates this topic on the basis of novel data from MA. I observe that the flavour of modality can change depending on how it is inflected with different types of aspect in MA. This observation is in line of Hacquard; Hacquard; Hacquard’s (2006; 2009; 2014) proposal for French and Italian. In MA, when the root modal \gdr\ “can” is inflected with the perfective, the combination yields entailments that have come to be known in the literature as ‘actuality entailments’ (AEs) (see Bhatt (1999, 2006)). In this case, the speaker gives rise to the inference that the proposition expressed by the complement holds in the actual world (instead of merely in some possible but not actual world). My thesis integrates the case of \gdr\ to current cross-linguistic debates on this topic. Building on Hacquard’s work, I argue that AEs are generated when perfective aspect scopes over root modals. Perfective aspect links events to the actual world. Imperfective aspect scoping over the modal fails to generate AEs. My thesis ex- ii tends the investigation of AEs to non-perfective cases. I argue that in addition to the contrast between perfective and imperfective, MA also distinguishes perfect aspect (e.g. an auxiliary plus a modal participle like gaadir). I suggest that the perfect in MA has several shapes, including the choice between two auxiliaries: kaan and saar. I link the different shapes of the perfect to the different types of interpretation identified by Portner (2000, 2003) for the English perfect. I suggest that in MA, different forms of the perfect are linked to distinct interpretations (which in English are grouped together under one form). In addition I show that, contrary to what has been argued by Hacquard for French, the perfect in MA can give rise to AEs in the case of the saar auxiliary. I develop an analysis of the saar perfect that is inspired by Hacquard’s proposal for perfective: in the case of saar, contrary to kaan, the perfect links the eventuality to the actual world. While the discussion of AEs in relation to the modal \gdr\ are linked to the proposal that aspect scopes over the modal, I also examine the case of a modal expression that scopes over aspect: qad “might”. I show that in spite of the fact that aspect scopes below the modal, the contrast between perfective and imperfective in the embedded clause can still give rise to differences in the generation of AEs. This case is interesting because much previous literature on AEs has focused on languages in which aspect scopes over the modal. MA qad provides an example where the modal scopes over aspect, and it is still the case that AEs appear to be generated. In spite of the structural differences with \gdr\, my analysis of qad builds on Hacquard’s proposal for AEs with the perfective, appealing to her proposal for the ‘preservation of event description’ to account for the fact that properties of eventualities can remain stable across worlds. The structure of the thesis is as follows: Chapter 1 provides an introduction to the empirical domain, situating aspect and modality in the description of MA; in addition it iii provides an introduction to key theoretical concepts to be used in later chapters. Chapter 2 discusses AEs in the case of the root modal \gdr\, comparing perfective and imperfective. Chapter 3 extends the discussion of the modal to examples with the perfect, distinguishing between the kaan- and saar- perfects. Chapter 4 investigates the behaviour of qad and its interaction with perfective and imperfective complements. Chapter 5 offers a brief summary and concluding remarks.

Abstract:
Abstract Virtual worlds now allow 'second lives' for World Wide Web users online, lives where identity is mutable and not assailed by the fallibility or perceived inadequacy of the flesh. Two terms have entered the new media lexicon, that are useful in denoting this dualism between the real and the simulated, 'cyberspace' and 'meatspace'. The meatspace is simply where the meat lives; meatspace is where physical, in contrast to electronic, interaction takes place. What the virtual is to cyberspace, flesh and blood is to meatspace. Yet an irony of this dichotomy is that in the digital realm of the World Wide Web there is a huge market, or rapt audience, for ‘real life’ representations of the body. The attraction of these images is that they privilege the flawed, unusual or damaged body as a site of spectacle. Here, the object of fascination is not only the human body and its functions, the most obvious example being the sexual body found in the hardcore pornography genre, but the human body in extremis. A dominant theme of this thesis shall be how the emergence of new media technologies has seen this hitherto niche genre grow exponentially, in regard to the volume of material available and the potential size of its audience. The primary focus in this thesis is the sub-genre of actuality body horror and death media, a recess within contemporary media that is dedicated to the production, distribution and consumption of visual records of ‘real life’ violence and its bloody aftermath, and the explicit representation of the traumatised, decayed or torn asunder body. Along with this, the thesis shall also look at how new media has changed spectator positions. However, this is no technologically deterministic account, for while new media enables greater production and distribution of death media, it is acknowledged herein that what is actually captured on camera is often dictated by a complex intersection of socio-cultural, religious and political influences. It shall be argued that in actuality body horror and death media the body fulfils either one of two functions, being a site of spectacle or cultural artefact. The distinction between the body being a site of spectacle or cultural artefact provides an organising duality for the thesis: meaning (the body as cultural artefact) and spectacle (the body as spectacular attraction). Adopting an interdisciplinary approach, the thesis incorporates film theory, literary and cultural theory, new media and socio-technological studies, and applies critical discourses to key actuality body horror and death media texts.

A new arena of Interactive Documentary production is thriving, and critics and scholars are taking note. Within this field, there is less attention to new opportunities and new theoretical challenges for live practices within the documentary sphere. This thesis argues for a fuller conceptualization of Live Documentary practice. First, it questions the current state of assumptions about documentary, as a form related to the 'document,' as a particularly film-leaning form, and as a lasting and historicizing form of discourse. Next, it examines the historical underpinnings of two forms of live documentary practice and exemplar projects of each: Live Performance Documentary and Live Subject Documentary. The former is situated in the media category of live theater and performance, and the second, the author will argue, is an instantiation of television in its earliest configuration as a device for two-way audio-visual communications and not just unidirectional broadcasting. The study concludes by positing a third medium-specific form of live documentary native to the computer, the Live Data Documentary. This final, more speculative form is defined by drawing on the meanings of 'liveness' examined in the previous chapters and the history of real time computing to generate a suggested framing for computer-native live documentary practice.

Abstract:
This thesis addresses the concerns of both historiographic theorists who are skeptical of the power of narrative to present historical information reliably, and of literary critics who are suspicious of any text that lays claim to factual or truthful representation. Through the analysis of texts that blend the self-referential uncertainty of modern (or postmodern) literature with the utilitarian objectives of historiography---works of literature that strive to represent, faithfully, events from history---the thesis assesses the relative truth value of the historical project and evaluates the role of narrative in effectively imparting historical information. I begin with an overview of the theoretical debate over the form of historical writing and the source of historical knowledge, since classical times, followed by an analysis of primary texts in the context of current trends in literary and historiographic theory. These texts, which pertain to the history of Japanese-Canadians since the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941, include Joy Kogawa's novels Obasan and Itsuka, and Dorothy Livesay's documentary poem for radio entitled Call My People Home. In addition I provide an analysis of a historiographic text, Mutual Hostages, that contradicts the prevailing perception of this historical event. As revisionary history, this text provides the opportunity to examine a competing narrative and its mechanism for establishing and communicating historical information. Through the analysis of these works, this thesis demonstrates that narrative is appropriate to historiography, and that figurative speech---as in poetic and rhetorical devices---can be more effective than literalist speech in representing historical events.

Abstract:
The main aim of my work - "Matter and Explanation. On Aristotle's Metaphysics Book Η" - is to show the argumentative unity of Book Η (VIII), which has been usually regarded as a mere collection of appendices to the previous Book Ζ. In my thesis I take on the main suggestion provided by M. Burnyeat in "A Map of Metaphysics Ζ" (2001). According to Burnyeat, Η accomplishes the enquiry of Ζ by developing Ζ17's fresh start into the analysis of sensible substances. Starting from Ζ17, Aristotle regards the notion of substance in its explanatory role as "principle and cause" and, as a consequence, he searches for "the cause by reason of which a certain matter is some definite thing". Burnyeat's suggestion has been so far followed in order to look at Η as at that place where this search is accomplished. Thus, Η would play a didactical-expository role. In my work I aim at showing how in Book Η Aristotle does not confine himself to a mere exposition of the previous outcomes. By contrast, he provides a deep revision of the status of matter's substancehood. Namely of that ontological subject whose organization must be explained. Such a revision concerns those criteria, which in Book Ζ have provided a deflationary reading of the notion of ὕλη. On the contrary, in Η matter is read as subject of physical changes and in its dispositional role within the biological wholes. Such a framework is accomplished in Η6, where Aristotle shows the explanatory primacy of his own hylomorphism over the Platonic Doctrine of Forms.

Full text
Abstract:
The main objective of this study is to shed light on some difficulties involved in the formulation of the problem of contingency in Leibniz&rsquo
s philosophical system. Leibniz&rsquo
s mature philosophy is characterized by the solutions he proposes for this problem, and the ontological ideas underlying or assisting them. &lsquo
The problem of contingency&rsquo
refers to the tension between his conceptual containment theory of truth and his claim that true existential propositions &ndash
that is, propositions which concern actual individuals &ndash
are all contingent. Though Leibniz does not seem to have one definite theory of contingency, two general lines of thought can nevertheless be discerned from his fragments on propositions and propositional truth. The first one is the infinite analysis theory, which is regarded in general as Leibniz&rsquo
s real theory of contingency, and the other is a theory of necessity, providing a division between absolute and hypothetical modalities. This thesis is not a study on the question whether Leibniz did really manage to solve the problem, but rather an attempt to trace the problem to its logical and ontological origins, and redefine it under a relatively simple form. It is first shown that Leibniz&rsquo
s theory of propositions relies heavily on his ontological conception of modalities, which covers the idea of a division between pure possibility and actuality
and then this idea is shown to be reflected on the logical level as a division between essential and existential truths. Finally it is argued that the two lines of thought and some peculiar characteristics of Leibniz&rsquo
s conception of modalities bring us to the conclusion that his real problem is the (deliberate) inability of his propositional calculus to express the difference between truths of reason (essential truths) and truths of fact (existential truths) as a logical structural one.

Abstract: Haneke's cinema is a cinema of hyper-realism, atmospheric, which speaks and answers. It translates into images the complexity that characterizes our challenged world. This work focuses on analyzing the work of Austrian director Michael Haneke through a review of the most important aesthetic resources and discursive manifestations in his films, defined as copyrighted brands. Firstly, it was necessary to contextualize the work as part of a specific historical moment, demonstrating its total link with the modernist thought emerged in the mid-70s. This is followed by a short review of the author's biography, emphasizing its his direct relationship with the theatrical universe and with the aesthetic-ideological proposal by the German playwright Bertolt Brecht, which distinguishes itself as absolutely dominant in the doctrinal thinking of the director. Finally, we carried out a detailed analysis of the most significant formal elements present in this work as part of the director's intent. The main topics addressed by this research, which in turn are defined by Brecht's legacy, are: the activation of the viewer's consciousness through a reflection of the facts represented, as a first topic, which originates through the productions created by the director, as a second topic. The spectator and the scene are therefore the pillars of this research. The aim of this study is to identify some ideas about the aesthetic design emanating from this filmography, understood as a byproduct of the renewing contemporary aesthetic thought. As part of the body of this research, Haneke's films set in a present and contemporary moment were selected in order to conclude in a critique that speaks directly about our world, after having reviewed the formal aspects found. The movies chosen for this research were the following: The Seventh Continent (1989), Benny's Video (1992), 71 Fragments of a Chronology of Chance (1994), Funny Games (1997), Code Unknown (2000), The Piano Teacher (2001) and Caché (2005)

Abstract:
This study constructs a dialogue between Hegel and Heidegger, within the framework of the Aristotelian conceptuality of the processual fulfilment of being. The fundamental divergences between the two German philosophers concerning movement, modality and time are analyzed in terms of their interpretations, adaptations, and transformations of the notions of potentiality and actuality. I begin by developing two contrasting conceptions of potentiality and actuality – immanent acts and transitive movements – that serve to mark out the different trajectories of interpretations made by Hegel and Heidegger. I then turn to an analysis of the numerous lecture courses both philosophers gave on Aristotle. Finally, I show how certain of their fundamental philosophical breakthroughs rely on the kinetic conceptuality of the Stagirite, even if the limitations of those Aristotelian paradigms ultimately force Hegel and Heidegger to transgress them. It turns out that Hegel, taking his point of depart from the priority and immanence of energeia, understood as the circular and atemporal movement of the dialectic, ends up with a theory of modality bearing close resemblance to that of the Megarians. Heidegger, on the other hand, understands the Aristotelian production discourse as a proto-phenomenology, which he nevertheless finds insufficient for conceptualizing the essential movement of Dasein, due to its overriding teleological orientation. Nevertheless, Heidegger remains Aristotelian in his insistence on the intrinsic relation between the movement of phenomenological appearing and time

Abstract:
The topic of the present dissertation is the issue of contingency in Hegel’s Science of Logic and in his Elements of the Philosophy of Right. Through the analysis of contingency, my aim is to underline the structural link between logical and political dimension of Hegel’s philosophy. The first chapter deals with Hegel’s analysis of contingency inside the Science of Logic: special attention is given to the dialectics of modal categories in the section on Actuality and to the relationship between necessity and contingency in the Subjective Logic. I will explain that the problem of contingency is pivotal to the speculative structures of Hegelian logic. Hence, I will show how the issue of modal logic becomes a central topic of the entire Subjective Logic. The second chapter concerns the logic of the Objective Spirit, and its complex connection with the logic of Science of Logic: we will discuss the famous statement concerning the reciprocity of the actual and the rational, the practical-political dimension of actuality, necessity and contingency, and the link between modal categories and the idea of freedom. The third chapter highlights the political relevance of the logical categories of contingency, necessity and actuality in Hegel’s dealing with the framework of modern political science: the theory of natural law, and also modern disciplines like political economy, administrative sciences, State’s theory, international right. From this background, it will be possible to discuss Hegel’s ideas of freedom, subjectivity, human agency, law and power, representation, political sharing and constitution, war. Countering the mainstream interpretation, I show that Hegel’s political philosophy is not the affirmation of the blind necessity of laws, institutions and State over the subjects and their common agency. On the contrary, Hegel’s idea of the political is the outcome of an important understanding of contingency. His entire philosophy is a great attempt to face this contingent dimension

Thesis, Paris 4, 2010. http://www.theses.fr/2010PA040210.

Full text
Abstract:
Dynamis is a key word in the Greek thought, not only in philosophy, in which it has assumed a particular significance since Aristotle, but also in medicine, the natural sciences and mathematics. The present work aims to present the translation equivalents adopted by the Latin authors and translators in classical antiquity and in late or medieval Latin, according to a twofold approach. First, from an onomasiological perspective, we try to identify and analyse the different ways dynamis (as well as the words semantically connected to it) appears in a corpus of Latin texts, from Plautus’ comedies to Boethius’ translation of Aristotle’s Organon : as a loan word, a formal neologism, a transposition or, as in most cases, a translation. Second, from a semasiological perspective, we focus on the impact of the translation from Greek on a lexical group made of Latin words frequently used to translate dynamis, namely potestas (“possibility, power”), potentia (“potentiality, potency”), uis (“strength, violence”) and uirtus (“value, quality, virtue”). The uses of these words in a corpus of literary and scientific texts are examined, and the question is raised of how far they may be considered as semantic calques from the Greek term dynamis. The work thus aims to reconstruct a moment in the history of the Greek notion : that of its “conversion” into Latin, which was decisive for its expression in modern languages, in French as puissance, potentialité, vertu, virtualité, etc., in English as potency, potentiality, virtue, virtuality, etc

Abstract:
In 1911, Freud said that delirium is a try to recover the health, that is truly proved by the case of the president D. P. Schreber. More recently, J. C. Maleval underline that Lacan in 1956 hinted at a delirium's scale, which is naturally a reference to the logic of the evolution of de-lirium in classical psychiatry, as well as the distribution that J. C. Maleval set off in his book "Logic of delirium", which locate the achievement of the self-therapeutic working at the P3 stage of the "systematic paraphrenia". J. C. Maleval show us how this stage, structurally, sign the acme of the delirious working as consent to the "jouissance de l'Autre". The paraphrenia appears in 1913 in the Kraepelin nosographia, which, in its last form, wanted to conciliate French and Deutsch theoretical current. Indeed, in the eighth edition of his treatise, after ten years of polemic, Kraepelin introduce in place of "démence précoce" a "démence précoce restreinte" and the group of paraphrenias. So he tried to answer for the criticism of French authors who refused including all hallucinating delirious in "démence précoce". Paraphrenia is standing on both sides : in the same time genius find punctuating a rich period of emulation between French and Deutsch's psychiatrists and singular clinical type which authorize for a psychotic subject the coexistence of an exuberant delirium and a satisfying professional and social inscription too. We will try to prove that paraphrenia can be considered as the term of the evolution of a psychotic cycle, and then we will examine the actuality of this clinical type and its possible extensions so as to set off some indications for psychoanalytic treatment of psychosis

Sahinler, Menter. "Origine, influence et actualité du kémalisme." Paris 1, 1995. http://www.theses.fr/1995PA010512.

Full text
Abstract:
Being an empirical movement and not a dogmatical system, kemalism inscribes itself in the Turkish cultural heritage and at the issue of the Ottomanian reforms of the 19th century. In the decades of 1920 et 1930, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk and his supporters have insured the independence of the Turkish nation and have established a republican dictatorship determined to impose the kamalist reforms. The aim of the government was the westernization of Turkey, in other words its secularization, its modernization and the creation of the necessary conditions for democracy. Nevertheless, the establishment of democracy in 1950 has coincided with a degradation of the acquirements of kemalism, and above all of the secularization, whence the intervention of the army, guarantor of the kemalist inheritance, in 1960. Kemalism in Turkey is exposed to the opposition of the radical Islamists who threaten democracy and secularization

Abstract:
Literary history conveys an image of Bruscambille that is linked to the world of farce and mountebanks, and portrays him as a minor author of the early 17th century. However, the extent of the success of his collections of prologues was such that, in the space of a few years, dozens of editions invaded the book market, while very few dramatic works of the time met the same fate. In order to understand the mechanisms of this success and identify what lies behind the name of “Bruscambille”, we propose to approach it as a phenomenon, and not only as an actor or singular author. This supposes to study his renown as the result of an elaboration due to various publishing operations, which involve various agents who are sometimes difficult to identify. That is how we analyse how “Bruscambille” is the product of a historiographical and editorial construction, composed of different features unified under the name of the author, the aesthetic and socio-economic components of which we then describe. As the prologues are gathered for publication in various booklets (the collection of which then became one of the most important unit in the “Bruscambille” system), their function is modified : cleared of their part as introductory discourses, the prologues can better fulfill a pragmatic role. They program the conditions of representation and socially and symbolically promote theater and its actors. More broadly, they appear as opportune places to discuss and shape various events of the time, through the use of comic and cryptic expression. Starting from the case of Bruscambille, it is the interferences, ever more numerous and complex, between the world of print, the world of theater and the society of the time that can be examined

Abstract:
This research addresses the issue of fanaticism throughout history, from a psychoanalytic standpoint which analyses various speech data: litterature, politics, arts, cinema, historical facts and news items. We intend to demonstrate that fanaticism is linked to the containment of obscenity and abjectness by the symbolic and cultural strutures of society, and that pornography reveals the modern crisis of the abjection containment process. Ultimately, the thesis sheds a new light on contemporary radical jihadism

Abstract:
This research aims to underline clinical facts in psychiatric hospitals with subjects suffering from schizophrenia. We have tried to demonstrate the hypothesis whereby it is possible to talk about the schizophrenic’s knowledge even though the examples given were subjects facing without any protection the impact of the jouissance on their body and language. Therefore, we were interested in how schizophrenia as a concept would be throughout history in psychiatric theories and clinical practices. As schizophrenia is a vague field, it led us to think that it didn’t exist. However, we have learned that patients seem to be in a gap of medical classification. Throughout psychoanalysis and Freud’s and Lacan’s teaching, we have made an ethical, strategic and political choice. In fact, they have theorize the function of the subject by proposing a method which treats what’s not curable and what’s beyond common meaning. Henceforth, the schizophrenic’s knowledge concerns the status of human being as a speaking body. Far from being lacking, it is exceeding. In order to limit the jouissance for a subject which doesn’t have the signifying articulation, we have learned that we have at our disposal the semblance which combines imaginary and symbolic. Then, we have explored the affect field which includes anxiety and love. Anxiety enables the subject to have access to the semblance, than love as the bond between speakers allows it to incorporate real. The last chapter discusses the way schizophrenia by it’s relevance to the outside meaning, can help the clinician to see how today’s society experiences the drive
