Abstract:
Based on the excellent performance of Pt100, a portable low-cost precision temperature sensor has been designed, whose core chips are REF03, AD8603, AD7788 and precision resistors. Constant current source (CCS) for 4-wire Pt100 is constituted by REF03, AD8603 and precision resistors. AD7788 measures the differential signal on Pt100 and suppresses the common mode interference signal. Analysis software running on the micro control unit (MCU) filters the digital code from AD7788, and then calculates the current temperature value according to the resistance-temperature mathematical model of Pt100. Analysis and experimental results show that the temperature measurement accuracy of the sensor can reach ±1°C within the range of 0°C-650°C.

Abstract:
This thesis advances two arguments for rethinking postsecular urbanism. First, it argues that it should be thought as a form of apophatic pluralism, wherein, while every religious or nonreligious group is empowered to find its modes of expression, none of their doctrines can be normative for the whole polity. To think pluralism via apophasis is to conceive space as the coming together of incommensurable monads, set free to search for truths while intermingling one another in the construction of the everyday. The second point is that its epistemic register must be that of imagination, framed as the noetic capacity of relating with the materiality and immateriality of the world. This work upholds that geography must try to pluralize imagination, to open the city to different processes of aesthesis and different conceptions of beauty. The work is composed by five chapters. The first is a theoretical review dedicated to matters of religious pluralism, secularization and secularism, and postsecular theories. The survey suggests that the notion of postsecularism should be redefined on the lines of apophatic pluralism. The second chapter is dedicated to geography of religion. It focuses on how geographical research addresses the materiality/immateriality of religion by looking at its outward and inward dimensions. The third chapter proposes an approach to geography of religion based on imagination, captured in the Aristotelian tradition as reshaped by post-Avicennan Islamic philosophy. It is advanced that the enigma of nous poietikos should be let open to different epistemics. In the forth chapter, these arguments are illustrated in reference to the project ‘Reimagining the Mosque, Opening the City’, a series of public workshops I have planned and coordinated with a number of scholars and Muslim artists in Rome and Bologna, Italy.

Abstract:
This study shows the importance of carolling in the celebrations and festivities of medieval Britain and demonstrates its longevity from the eleventh century to the sixteenth. It illustrates the flexibility of the English carole form for adaptation to include content in high and low registers and its suitability for use on all occasions and by different communal peer groups. It also shows that the carole was part of a developmental trajectory that was not totally subsumed by the dominance, from the sixteenth century onwards, of the religious, composed, polyphonic carol and the subsequent use of the name to denote a specifically Christian Christmas hymn. Although the vast majority of extant texts in carol form, from the late medieval period, are religious in subject content, secular carolling was far more prevalent than the textual record implies. The dance-song elements of the medieval carole were so strongly woven into the vernacular cultural fabric of the British Isles that their threads can be traced through the folk-songs and dances of subsequent centuries. This study contextualises the written evidence and re-integrates the various components of the activity in order to illuminate our understanding of the universally popular medieval, participatory, pastime of carolling.

Abstract:
One of the most promising devices to provide accurate measurement of the longitudinal bunch profile at the tens of femtosecond level is based on electro-optic techniques. In this thesis, a bunch profile monitor, based on electro-optic spectral decoding (EOSD), is currently developed for the CLIC Test Facility 3 at CERN. The monitor is optimised for bunch lengths over 3.5 ps with effective window of 16 ps, and sub-picosecond resolution. The measurement results from the EO monitor are compared with measurements by coherent transition radiation on a streak camera. The measurement on bunch charge dependence is studied. Timing resolution of the bunch profile monitor is studied in both theory and numerical calculation. This thesis summarises a frequency analysis approach of electro-optic effect based on $\chi^{(2)}$ frequency mixing process. From the theory analysed in frequency domain, a non-crossed polarization measurement includes all three of the probe laser background term, the linear term to Coulomb field and the quadratic term to Coulomb field. Three methods are induced based on this frequency analysis result to retrieve Coulomb field value which is emitted from electron beam. The measured 1.3 MV/m field strength agrees with calculation result. An experiment is designed to study the role of incident beam sizes and non-collinear incident beams in EO technique. Due to the phase matching process, the non-collinear angle of the incident beams induces a frequency dependent angular chirp in the beams emitted after the EO crystal. This frequency offset may lead to frequency loss in fibre coupling, and thus lead to bunch length broadening in a measurement for short electron bunch.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This work concerns the development of an experimental technique to characterize the low-frequency noise of semiconductor devices. In order to extract the equivalent short-circuit current noise sources of a transistor operated under high DC current densities, we propose a method based on the experimental determination of the low-frequency dynamics of the device, followed by the measurement of the voltage fluctuations across its terminals. We also studied the behavior of the low-frequency noise of diodes and transistors, when those devices are forced into large-signal operation. The instrumentation retained for this study had been previously used to measure the 1/f noise of carbon resistors, as a mean of exploring the potentialities of the setup. The results obtained from resistors, diodes and transistos give a strong evidence of the clyclostationary properties of the low-frequency noise

Abstract:
The toxicity and ubiquitousness of PAHs within different terrestrial environments has been an increasing cause for concern amongst environmental scientists in the last decades, in particular regarding their transport within the soil. In an attempt to understand the role of pure inorganic phases in PAH-mobility; experiments exposing mineral soil components with low organic matter content to a PAH-representative were carried out. The systems consisted of four different mineral phases (quartz sand, hematite, iron coated quartz sand and montmorillonite) which were individually exposed to naphthalene in electrolyte solutions prepared at increasing ionic strengths (NaNO3: 0.001 M; 0.01 M; 0.1 M) and pH (4.0 and 5.5). All experiments were conducted over at 24 reaction intervals and at ambient temperature conditions.Mineral geosorbents are traditionally known to be poor PAH-scavengers; in particular when compared to organic, high surface area materials such as activated carbons. On this basis, a preliminary validation experiment (Proof of Concept Experiment) was conducted to test the sensitivity of the selected extraction method (SPME) under complete uptake (activated carbon) and very low uptake (quartz sand) conditions. By extracting and analysing the supernatant after 24 hr of exposure of both sorbents to naphthalene under identical conditions it was concluded that SPME was a feasible extraction technique, yielding good reproducibility (n=3, inter-day RSD%= 11.18% ) even at very low PAH concentrations (0.2 µg / L). The final concentration of naphthalene in the sample supernatant after 24 hours was determined by GC-FID. All samples were extracted using the Solid Phase Microextraction method developed during the Proof of Concept which allowed the rapid extraction of naphthalene in the headspace HS-SPME (extraction time = 3 minutes) using temperature control and ultrasonication as means of agitation. Each sample set included triplicates of blanks and samples as well as calibration standards (in duplicate where possible)Out of the four minerals, only quartz sand and hematite showed a slight tendency towards naphthalene removal from solution; a finding which correlated well with increasing ionic strength. The other two minerals did not show any such trend and the results were deemed inconclusive. In regards to the results for quartz and hematite; the detected uptake was found to be below the sensitivity of the current SPME extraction method according to the error analysis carried out by comparing the sample and blank means whilst accounting for error equal to 1σ. The overlapping of both means in the majority of the samples indicated that both averages were too close to be accurately resolved (due to very low naphthalene uptake). Modifications to the SPME method could improve the reproducibility and decrease the spread of the data; however, this measure would only guarantee higher statistical confidence (95 %) and not higher naphthalene uptake by these minerals. These observations lead to the conclusion that naphthalene was being salted out of solution rather than being removed by sorption; and under these experimental conditions it would not have been possible to detect any real PAH-mineral interaction. In view of this outcome, a different approach was attempted in order to detect surface reactions between the minerals and naphthalene. A series of preliminary (qualitative) surface analysis (AFM, XPS and ATR-FTIR) on pre-loaded mineral specimens were carried out in air at ambient temperature conditions. No naphthalene was positively identified on the surfaces of the studied sorbents. Factors such as molecular size, sorbents characteristics (i.e. roughness, surface charge) and loading conditions impeded the detection of the target molecules. Innovative sample preparation protocols as well as controlled analytical conditions would need to be implemented and evaluated before this kind of analytical tool can be used. The main outcome of this research work was the successful adaptation of SPME to the rapid extraction of naphthalene in electrolyte solutions at optimal and sub-optimal concentration levels; as the proof of concept preliminary experiment showed.

Abstract:
This thesis will focus on the work of eight British poets established in the 1950s or ‘60s as part of either the ‘Movement’ or the ‘British Poetry Revival’. The research will proceed from the prominent role played by these two groupings in understandings of British poetry, as expressed in existing criticism and in a number of poetry anthologies. As will be demonstrated, the opposition of these groups frequently stands in place of a more fundamental binary view of twentieth-century British poetry, which might be expressed in terms of mainstream versus margins or traditionalism versus experimentalism. At the core of this thesis, the eight poets under discussion will be placed in a series of comparisons that deliberately invokes such a binary split. Reading their poetry with a focus on landscape and ‘located identity’, I will suggest that the opposition between Movement and Revival poetry may be re-examined with a geographical or spatial emphasis. After introducing the critical terrain, I will demonstrate how poetry anthologies have helped frame the two groups of poets with potentially incompatible models of literary history. These models will be shown to engage with questions of cultural identity and the relationship of literary texts to national space. This will lay the foundations for my central chapters, which will each begin with a literary method of distinguishing Movement and Revival practice, but will then reveal the discourses of identity, locality, and territory that are also involved. Thus, the thesis will engage with matters of realism, syntax, lyricism, and poetic structure, for instance, but will also intimately connect such considerations to its central concern with located identity. By enacting this re-phrasing of an existing binary, I aim not only to fruitfully illuminate and interlink the two bodies of poetry, but also to suggest an altered method of mapping British poetry.
