A great number of the urban areas in Ethiopia are situated within the Great Rift Valley of Ethiopia, a system consisting of depressions and large faults. As a region with significant seismic activities, it is vital that careful planning is implemented to avoid constructing buildings on flat surfaces as they can amplify ground motion in the case of an earthquake. This study was conducted in Adama, a city located within the rift system, to map and characterize the subsurface of a construction site with seismic refraction and investigate whether this is an optimal area to construct a building should an earthquake occur. Seismic refraction is based on Snell’s law, specifically the case of the critical angle, which is when the refracted angle is at 90 degrees and a number of the energy from the wave is rebounded back to the surface in accordance with Huygen’s Principle. Seismic waves were generated with a sledgehammer and recorded with 24 vertical geophones. The acquired data was then analysed with SeisImager and produced a 2D-tomography of the site with the corresponding velocity layers for a P-wave. Comparing the P-wave velocities to a table of Seismic Velocities of Rocks and Various Materials, one could determine that the subsurface layers consisted of rock soils, sand and silt. These are incredibly loose materials that will amplify ground motion during earthquake crisis and are therefore not optimal or ideal for constructing buildings.

The thesis is also devoted to the life and works of františek Václav Míča who was the author of the first substantiated Czech opera About the origin of jaroměřice and it also touches the relevant theme of the role and assertion of the Czech lanquage in this place at the time preceding the revival era of the Czech celture.

Philosophiae Doctor - PhD (Library and Information Studies)<br>The study examined the availability of e-resources in the Ibrahim Babangida Library at Modibbo Adama University of Technology, Yola (MAUTECH) focusing to integrate e-resources in a dedicated portal for easy access. The study was motivated by the Nigerian vision 20:2020 and the trend in 21st century academic libraries to offer electronic resources and services to meet users? demands and use of technology. Mixed methods were sequential, concurrent, conversion and integrated approaches used. A descriptive case study approach was employed. The Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and Diffusion of Innovation (DoI) theories framed the study. Based on these, a conceptual framework was constructed. To achieve triangulation, questionnaires, interviews and scanning of library portals were used to gather both quantitative and qualitative data. Academics, students, academic librarians, and information and communication technology experts acted as participants. Findings reflected low use of the Ibrahim Babangida Library, dissatisfaction with the quality and quantity of the library collection, insufficient and unreliable Internet access on campus, limited information literacy education, familiarity and utilization of e-resources due to flexibility and easy access to academic information, need for digitisation of library resources and the need for a dedicated library portal. The study recommends, amongst others, information literacy education for students and academics, subscription to full-text databases, provision of sufficient and free Internet access, e-resource and e-services policies, and establishing a consortium with other Nigerian academic libraries. The outcome of the study was a designed, established and functioning library portal based on the input of all the stakeholders of the MAUTECH community.

A integração entre o citoesqueleto celular e a MEC mediada pelas integrinas gera a produção de força mecânica sobre a membrana plasmática. Isto permite às células gerar tração durante sua migração e tensão durante o remodelamento da MEC. Várias proteínas com diferentes funções já foram identificadas como ligantes das subunidades a e b das integrinas. O estudo de proteínas capazes de se ligar e interferir na sinalização via integrina, como as desintegrinas-like e cisteina-rich presentes nos venenos de serpente e proteínas conhecidas como ADAM (A Disintegrin And Metaloprotease), torna-se cada vez mais importante. Assim, o isolamento, a caracterização e a determinação da estrutura de várias desintegrinas oferecem valiosas ferramentas para o desenvolvimento de novos compostos terapêuticos para um vasto número de doenças, sendo excelentes candidatos-protótipo para o desenvolvimento de novos fármacos que interfiram nas funções celulares moduladas por proteínas de adesão.
Entretanto, as formas como a integrina e a ADAM interagem ainda não foram bem esclarecidas. Neste contexto, este trabalho visa analisar em escalar molecular a estrutura da integrina alpha6beta1 e do domínio desintegrina-like das ADAMs 2 e 9 humanas, e a forma como estas proteínas interagem, aplicando metodologias de biologia computacional estrutural como modelagem e dinâmica molecular. Com o objetivo de estudar a interação destas proteínas, modelos estruturais foram construídos por homologia a partir das estruturas 3D de proteínas obtidas por cristalografia de raio-X, e realizaram-se simulações de dinâmica molecular com solvente explícito para as proteínas isoladas e em complexo.
Através do estudo estrutural e funcional pelo método in silico da integrina alpha6beta1 e ADAMs 2 e 9 humanas, as análises dos resultados das simulações e da flutuação dos resíduos de contato entre as duas proteínas durante a dinâmica molecular, foram desenhados e caracterizados novos candidatos peptídicos para inibição da integrina alpha6beta1. Nas simulações da movimentação angular do domínio bA/Hybrid, visando a possível ativação da integrina alpha6beta1 através da interação com o domínio desintegrina-like de ADAM9 e ligantes peptídicos, obtivemos resultados positivos para os peptídeos A9b e A9d. Este estudo aponta para o desenvolvimento de inibidores protéicos viáveis da integrina alpha6beta1 com base nestas estruturas. Nossos resultados ainda comprovam pelas metodologias in silico a eficácia dos modelos construídos, conseguindo reproduzir o comportamento das proteínas em estudo.<br>The production of mechanical force on plasma membrane is mediated by
integrins, connecting ECM components and cell cytoskeleton. This allows cells
to generate traction during migration and tension during ECM remodeling. Integrins
are membrane-spaning adhesion receptors that mediate dynamic linkages between intracellular actin cytoskeleton and the extracelullar adhesive matrix,
outside-in/inside-out signaling, migration and detachment. Several proteins with
diferent functions have already been identified as integrin ligands, and some important candidates as disintegrin-like and cystein-rich domains present in the snake venon metalloproteinases and ADAM (A Disintegrin and Metaloprotease) become important as they interfere in cell signaling pathways mediated by these transmembrane receptors. Thus, the isolation, characterization and structure determination of disintegrin-like domains o_er valuable tools for the development of new therapeutic compounds for a wide range of diseases. These compounds may provide new treatments for diseases such as cancer and inflammation pathologies. However, the mechanisms of ADAM-Integrin interaction have not been well clarified, yet. In this perspective, this study aims to analyze the molecular structure of the alfa6beta1 integrin and the disintegrin-like domain of human ADAM2 and ADAM9. Computational biology methods such as homology modeling and molecular dynamics were used in order to study the dynamics of the interaction of these proteins.
Using in silico experimentation, detailed models of human alfa6beta1 and human ADAM 2 and 9 were obtained. Based on these models, the molecular basis of alfa6beta1-ADAMdsld interactions was assessed, and the most important structural components in ligand recognition/discrimination were identified.
Using the collected structural information, we designed different small peptide based inhibitors, based on the structure of the interaction loop of human ADAM 9 disintegrin-like domain. Here proposed A9a inhibitor was testedin vitro, showing satisfactory results in blocking cell adhesion on specific substrates by alfa6beta1- laminin affnity inhibition in nanomolar concentrations. Our results also show the effcacy of the constructed models, the power of computational biology tools in new drug-design technologies, and clearly suggest that here presented alfa6beta1 inhibitors are good candidates for further development of new therapeutic agents against inflammation pathologies.

L’invasion métastatique des tumeurs humaines est un mécanisme complexe qui repose sur l’acquisition de nouvelles fonctionnalités par les cellules tumorales. Les protéines ADAM et plus particulièrement la protéine ADAM9, grâce à leur domaine extracellulaire se composant d’une activité métalloprotéasique et disintégrine, possèdent des fonctions importantes et nécessaires au processus d’invasion. Cependant, les mécanismes de régulation de la protéine restent globalement méconnus dans la pathologie cancéreuse. L’objectif de ce travail a consisté à évaluer le rôle de l’expression d’ADAM9 dans les mécanismes d’agressivité tumorale tels que l’adhérence cellulaire, la migration cellulaire ou l’angiogénèse ainsi que l’étude des mécanismes de régulation de l’expression de cette protéine. Compte tenu du fait que le peroxyde d’hydrogène est connu pour induire l’expression d’ADAM9, les premiers travaux ont eu pour objectif d’établir le lien entre stress oxydant, ADAM9 et adhérence tumorale. L’exposition des cellules d’adénocarcinome pulmonaire au peroxyde d’hydrogène induit une augmentation dose dépendante de l’expression de la protéine ADAM9 transmembranaire et de sa forme sécrétée. Les études in vitro ont permis d’établir que les capacités d’adhérence et d’invasion tumorale induites par le stress oxydant sont principalement médiées par les deux isoformes de la protéine ADAM9. Par ailleurs, l’expression d’ADAM9 provoque un accroissement de la néo-angiogénèse par l’intermédiaire d’un accroissement non transcriptionel de la biosynthèse d’IL8. Cette cytokine proangiogénique va interagir avec le récepteur CXCR2 et va permettre la mise en place d’une néovascularisation in vitro. Le développement d’un modèle de xénogreffe de cellule d’adénocarcinome pulmonaire a permis de confirmer le rôle majeur d’ADAM9 dans les processus de dissémination métastatique et d’angiogénèse tumoraux. L’étude de la modulation pharmacologique d’ADAM9 a reposé sur deux stratégies pharmacologiques différentes : d’une part l’interaction directe avec les différentes isoformes d’ADAM9 au moyen d’un anticorps neutralisant et d’autre part une action sur les mécanismes de transduction cellulaire tels que la protéine SRC ou la protéine kinase C. Ce travail a permis de mieux comprendre l’implication de la protéine ADAM9 au cours du processus de cancérogenèse de part sa participation aux étapes majeures que sont la dissémination métastatique induite par le stress oxydant et l’angiogenèse<br>Tumor invasion is a complex mechanism that is based on the acquisition of tumor cells new functions. ADAM proteins, especially protein ADAM9, through their extracellular domain consisting of a disintegrin and metalloprotease activity, have important functions and processes necessary for invasion. However, the mechanisms regulating protein remain largely unknown in cancer pathology. The objective of this work was to evaluate the role of ADAM9 expression in tumor aggressiveness such as cell adhesion, cell migration and angiogenesis and to study the mechanisms regulating this protein expression. Given the fact that hydrogen peroxide is known to induce the expression of ADAM9 protein, the first work aimed to establish the relationship between oxidative stress, adhesion and tumor ADAM9 expression. Hydrogen peroxide induces a dose-dependent increase of both expression and activity of ADAM9 on adenocarcinoma pulmonary cells. Oxidative stress induced ADAM9 expression and activity are mainly supported by the secreted form of ADAM9 protein. In vitro studies have shown that capacity of adhesiveness and invasiveness induced by oxidative stress are mainly mediated by the two forms of ADAM9 protein. In addition, ADAM9 protein expression induces neoangiogenesis through increased production of interleukin 8. This proangiogenic cytokine that interacts with the CXCR2 receptor is able to stimulate neovascularization in vitro studies. Development of a lung adenocarcinoma xenograft model confirmed that ADAM9 protein have an important role on metastasis process and tumor angiogenesis. The study of pharmacological modulation of ADAM9 expression was based on two different pharmacological strategies: the first interacts with different isoforms of ADAM9 using a neutralizing antibody and the second strategy modulate cell transduction mechanism such as SRC protein or protein kinase C (PKC). The scope of the current thesis is the investigation of the seismic behavior of complex structures of soccer stadium in the city of Adana, Turkey. The main structural parts of the building of the stadium are reinforced concrete tribunes, steel façade and cable-stayed roof, resting on the structures of the façade.
The behavior of the coupled model in case of seismic excitation is studied. The coupled model is defined as a structural model that contains together all main structural parts: the tribunes, the façade and the roof.
In the engineering practice, a large-span roof and supporting substructures (façade, tribunes) are differentiated and analyzed separately. In case when the seismic analysis has to be done, the separated analysis has to be performed with caution and possible amplification effect of the seismic action for the structural model with all main structural blocks introduced has to be taken into account.
The amplification effect is defined as the increase of the displacements, total base shear and internal forces in the structural elements. To investigate the extent of the amplification effect, the results obtained from the analysis of coupled and uncoupled models were compared.
The results obtained from the modal spectral response analysis and nonlinear dynamic analysis of different structural models show a significant amplification of the displacements of the roof structure and façade bearing columns for a coupled model, with the subsequent increase of the total base shear transferred to the substructures form the roof and internal forces in the elements.
Methods of improving the structural behavior for the seismic excitation have been investigated. In particular, the effect of installation of seismic isolators for the roof structures has been studied. For the structural models with the isolated roof, the results of the analysis of both coupled and uncoupled models have been improved and all design requirements have been verified.

This thesis contains new results about the representability of cohomological functors defined on a subcategory of compact objects (with respect to a fixed cardinal) of a well generated triangulated category. Classical theorems of Adams for the stable homotopy category and Neeman for compactly generated triangulated categories are extended to the first uncountable cardinal. The case of derived categories of rings and the stable motivic category are studied in detail. These results contribute to answering negatively a question raised by Rosický of whether all cohomological functors defined on a subcategory of compact objects with respect to a large enough cardinal are representable. Some of the findings in this thesis are based on new results about abelian categories, the most relevant being a generalization of the Auslander Lemma for non Grothendieck categories.<br><I>TESI "Representabilitat d'Adams en categories triangulades"<br/><br/>TEXT:<br/><br/>En aquesta tesi s'obtenen resultats nous sobre la representabilitat de functors cohomològics definits en subcategories d'objectes compactes (respecte a un cardinal fixat) d'una categoria triangulada ben generada. The object of this thesis is to present a reinterpretation of Adam Smith's philosophy. It works to show the pessimistic character of his thought that is so often overlooked by conventional analyses. The skepticism Smith holds for man can be seen in his theories on the accumulation of knowledge, morality, economics, and human progress. By emphasizing Smith's theory of man's subjugation to the natural order, an alternative interpretation is given of liberal economics. The role of God in Smith's philosophy will be shown to serve two purposes. God serves as Smith's final line of explanation, and it also provides humanity beneficial results through unintended outcomes.

La thématique anthropogonique est véritablement prégnante dans le texte coranique. Séquencé en plusieurs chapitres, le récit mythique qui en est fait mérite une attention particulière. La présente étude retrace de façon historique la phylogénétique dudit récit, en l'originant à l'Egypte antique, puis en le faisant circuler par la Mésopotamie et la civilisation cananéenne. Il s'agit dans un premier temps de cerner les différents mythèmes qui ont été retenus dans la Bible et qui ont fini par pénétrer le texte du Coran. Dans un deuxième temps, la focale sera mise sur le contexte de prédication du prophète arabe Muhammad, dans la péninsule arabique à l'époque de l'Antiquité tardive. Il semble important de montrer pourquoi la formulation de sa prédication a pris cette forme particulière et non une autre, notamment à cause de la réceptivité et la familiarité de son auditoire à cet imaginaire-là. Enfin, dans un troisième temps, il est question d'établir un état des lieux précis de la tradition islamique de départ et l'assimilation en son sein de certaines traditions sémitiques, notamment juives et chrétiennes, relative à la question adamique. Il est également mis en exergue la stratification des exégèses qui sont corollaires à ce récit anthropogonique et leur complexification progressive, intégrant de façon significative des notions philosophiques et gnostiques qui rendent apparemment au mythe sa dimension rituelle effective<br>The anthropogonic theme is truly prevalent in the qoranic text. Sequenced in several chapters, the mythical account that is given deserves particular attention. -The present study traces the phylogenetics of this narrative in a historical manner, originating in ancient Egypt and then circulating it through Mesopotamia and the Canaanite civilization. The first step is to identify the different myths that were retained in the Bible and that eventually penetrated the text of the Qor'an. -Secondly, the focus will be on the context of the preaching of the arab prophet Muhammad in the Arabian Peninsula in late antiquity. It seems important to show why the formulation of his preaching took this particular form and not another one, notably because of the receptivity and familiarity of his audience to this imaginary. -Finally, in the third part, it is a question of establishing a precise state of affairs of the original islamic tradition and the assimilation within it of certain semitic traditions, notably jewish and christian, relating to the adamic question. The stratification of the exegeses that are corollary to this anthropogonic narrative and their progressive complexification are also highlighted, significantly integrating philosophical and gnostic notions that give the myth its effective ritual dimension

This dissertation explores the extent to which the political ideology that formed the basis for the American republic shaped American diplomacy, using John Adams, James Madison and John Quincy Adams as case studies. American statesmen drew on a variety of sources for republican principles of diplomacy. The law of nations and the Scottish political economists supplied the ideas of an international balance of power and freedom of trade. English writers of the Opposition Whig school provided concepts such as political separation from Europe, reliance on a navy for defense, abhorrence of a standing army and, indirectly, the belief that the United States could use its economic power to secure its diplomatic goals.;John Adams began his career with a high degree of confidence in the virtue of the American people and the coercive power of American trade. He combined a classical martial ethic with an Opposition whig strategic sense. Adams's experience in Europe disproved these beliefs, and as president he fell back on the republican realpolitik, based on naval power and separation from Europe, suggested by the Opposition Whig school.;James Madison never held out a classical model of virtue and never lost faith in the coercive power of American commerce. His combination of political economy with Opposition thought led him to reject both an army and a navy as monarchical tools of diplomacy. He saw the Constitution as a vehicle for harnessing American economic power. Madison's conception of a republican diplomacy led him, as secretary of state and president, to rely on the Embargo and similar economic measures.;John Quincy Adams combined republican realpolitik with a sense of Christian purpose and saw American government and diplomacy as a vehicle for moral improvement. Adams's republic rested on a continental union and a diplomacy directed against European colonization, as a manifestation of monarchy. Non-colonization included removing Spain as a neighbor in North America, preventing European political encroachment in the Western Hemisphere, and securing a hemisphere-wide consensus on neutral rights. as a congressman and critic of slavery-driven expansion, Adams demonstrated the persistence of Opposition Whig thought in American politics.

Historic rural settlement patterns and agricultural land utilization appear to have been partially influenced by pre-settlement landscape characteristics (especially drainage and soil fertility). Therefore efforts to document, interpret and ultimately protect and manage rural historic resources (sites, structures and objects) must include a broad survey methodology which integrates traditional architectural inventory procedures with natural landscape history and cultural influences.The preliminary findings of a recent rural landscape survey of southern Adams County, Indiana suggest a possible correlation between landscape characteristics and early Swiss Mennonite settlement patterns. While these settlers were probably not cognizant of the region's geologic history, they seem to have had an appreciation and awareness of certain landscape characteristics (elevation, drainage and vegetation as a clue to soils) as an indication of desirable farmland.This creative project uses the preliminary findings of The Southern Adams County Rural Landscape Survey as the basis for an in depth study of the apparent relationship between nature and culture which exists in this locality.The area which is the focus of the project is the historic home of the majority of Amish and Swiss Mennonite settlers in southern Adams County. It includes portions of French, Monroe, Hartford and Wabash Townships and centers on an uneven morainic belt which parallels the northern side of the Wabash River.The goal of the study is to explore the hypothesis generated by the survey, that: natural features and subculture geographic distribution as revealed in building types (the half-timber house, the white frame summer kitchen and the red Sweitzer barn) seem to correlate. The study is not an attempt to prove empirically the relationship between nature and culture. Rather it is an effort to reveal additional information about these variables which might later serve as the basis for analytical models or methodologies for studying other rural, cultural landscapes.<br>Department of Architecture

in unbounded domains of Rn for Sobolev Spaces involving high order derivatives. This
inequality is nowadays known as Adams-type inequality [1]. We study the techniques
developed in the works due to F. Sani and B. Ruf in [23] and due to N. Lam and G. Lu
in [16] which are, essentially, combinations of the Comparison Principle of Trombetti
and Vazquez for polyharmonic operators and a symmetrization argument, also known
as Schwarz Symmetrization. "With such techniques in hands", our aim is to reduce our
problem to the radial case and, as a consequence, find an upper bound for the supremum
over all functions belonging to the unit ball of Wn;mn (Rn) provided with some specific
norm, as well as the sharpness of the constant that appears in Adams inequalities.<br>Neste trabalho temos como objetivo apresentar uma extensão da desigualdade de AdamsTrudinger-Moser [1] em domínios ilimitados de Rn para espaços de Sobolev envolvendo

Over recent years we have seen a dramatic infusion of technology into schools and educational settings and as such, technological advances especially those involving mobile computing devices are now an integral aspect of modern education.
Technology may also provide a tool for differentiating learning experiences especially for those students likely to be pioneers in the knowledge economy, namely the gifted.
Support for the identification and education of the gifted is not a new concept.
Its origins run long and deep in many countries and can be traced across and influenced by historical periods such as the Cold War and the Space Race. Despite the long history of gifted education programs there are still many unanswered questions about the impact these programs have and how best to optimise outcomes for the students involved.
Currently there is real push and focus in education circles in Australia that focus on the needs of the individual and the use of differentiation across a whole class to support improved student outcomes. Education Queensland depicts this as the school improvement hierarchy where ultimately when all programs in an education setting align this will enable or trigger the opportunity for differentiated teaching and learning. Furthermore, under the Framework for Gifted Education, all state schools in Queensland are required to meet the learning needs of students who are gifted. The problem becomes apparent at this point of what opportunities can we provide for a gifted learner?
This case study focused on the experiences of gifted students involved in ubiquitous one-to-one laptop classroom where each student has his/her own laptop.
Using activity theory as a conceptual framework, the question explored the extent to which a one-to-one laptop environment interaction with a learning tool be it teacher, computer or peer, build the confidence, autonomy and set in place effective relationships that position the student to achieve enhanced outcomes for gifted students.
"It is really not about the laptops. It's about what the one-to-one laptops enable in terms of new ways of teaching and learning" (Dunleavy, Dextert, & Heinecket, 2007, p. 5) Qualitative data were captured from multiple sources to construct validity. The data for this case study were obtained through interviews, surveys, questionnaires, classroom observations, documents and video recordings. The data was analysed through inductive analytical processes including open coding, creating categories and abstraction.
From the study four broad findings were evident: 1. The needs of gifted students can be supported through a one-to-one laptop program; 2. That the authentic teaching environment is still paramount to the outcomes of teaching and learning; 3. That laptops provide an opportunity for gifted students to customise learning and increase engagement through self-efficacy and management; 4. That laptops are a tool that provide gifted students with the means for greater self-regulation.
The results of this research indicate that participation in a one-to-one laptop classroom can be beneficial to a student's achievement and create rich and positive experiences. However, it is dependent on how the program is structured by the teacher.
This study has added to the sum knowledge about gifted programs involving ICTs and gifted students. Further research is needed into other avenues of teaching that, when combined, provide the very best for gifted students, explicitly the distance travelled by gifted students in the later years of high school education and the impact that laptop and one-to-one learning opportunities and engagement at a primary level had on long terms outcomes.

This study is an intellectual biography of Sir George Adam Smith, biblical scholar and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Aberdeen. Smith trained for the ministry of the Free Church of Scotland under A.B. Davidson, who was influential in disseminating Higher Critical views of the Bible in Scotland. Smith inherited his teacher's penchant for Hebrew and Old Testament criticisms, and served as Hebrew tutor in Aberdeen's Free Church College following the deposition of William Robertson Smith, before becoming the first minister of Queen's Cross Free Church, Aberdeen (1882-92). During his ministry in Aberdeen Smith established a reputation as a preacher of note, and a leading biblical scholar. His preaching drew a large congregation around him, and his Old Testament commentaries secured him a place of note among students of the Old Testament prophets. The tensions between the developing biblical scholarship of the period and the confessional commitment of the Victorian Free Church of Scotland are evident in his years of ministry; and this thesis examines the relationship between the Church's theological position and the scholarship of the rising intellectuals. In 1892 Smith was appointed to the Chair of Hebrew and Old Testament Exegesis at the Free Church College, Glasgow, where he served until 1910. Smith's scholarly work focused on further critical studies of the prophets and the Historical Geography of Palestine. The tensions between academic study of the biblical text and the Church's confessional position came to a head with a near trial for heresy in 1902, the significance of which is examined here. Smith also embraced a social Gospel, and the relationship between his critical study of the Old Testament and his social work in the cities is worthy of study. Some historians view the emergence of a social gospel as evidence of a disappearing orthodox; but for Smith the social work of the church was integral to the ongoing ministry of the Church. Smith served as Principal of Aberdeen University from 1910 to 1935. His position as Vice Chancellor was akin to pastoring a large congregation without credal commitment. The growth of the University during his Principalship is interesting in its own right; not less so are his work as Moderator of the United Free Church of Scotland (1916) and his work in church and state during the First World War.

<i>Cane</i> is already recognized as the most significant landmark of the Harlem Renaissance, and as one of the first major contributions to black literature. However, critics have neglected to address its similarities to nineteenth-century American literature, and specifically how it continues a celebrated tradition dedicated to penetrating considerations of American identity.
This study attempts to re-focus the critical perspective to illustrate that <i>Cane</i> deserves recognition as a major work of <u>American</u> literature because it calls for an Adamic personality to combat the complexities of the enigmatic American scene. Moreover, the study suggests that <i>Cane</i> belongs among those famous American writings by Emerson, Hawthorne, Whitman, Twain, and Melville because it too investigates the tensions between individuality and social continuity that are so important to an ongoing American dialectic. Finally, the study explains that <i>Cane</i> is in fact worthy of acceptance into the exclusive forum of American writings because ( in Roger Rosenblatt's words) it “is not conceived of in terms of what an individual human being may strive to overcome or accomplish, but rather in terms of where that individual may be spiritually and culturally located.”<br>M.A.

Obra composta de quatro contos e uma novela. Tanto a obra quanto o autor permitem muitas reflexões acerca da literatura, desde a literatura de humor até a de horror, mas sobretudo literatura fantástica. E é sobre esta que me detenho, especificamente na novela Claire Lenoir. Como Tribulat Bonhomet permanece inédito em português, apresento uma tradução e sobre essa tradução ? que se encontra ao fim, como anexo ? elaborei minha tese, sobre uma via dupla: tradução e teoria literária. Dedico o Capítulo 1 a essa duplicidade, separadamente, apresentando em 1.1 a literatura fantástica, fazendo o esboço de um tipo de literatura que provoca um exorcismo do real, um afastamento entre o leitor e a realidade. Na seqüência, em 1.2 abordo as perspectivas de tradução de um texto literário, a partir, principalmente, de Friedrich Schleiermacher (1768-1834) e Antoine Berman (1942-1991). Ambos os tópicos servirão de base para os dois capítulos subseqüentes. Jag använder mig av ett inifrånperspektiv genom att intervjua turkiska kvinnor men gör även kopplingar till artiklar som belyser just moderniseringens effekter på äktenskapsformer.</p><br><p>This essay is about marriages in an urban setting in contemporary Turkey. It exemplifies how a marriage arrangement is done and whether the migration into cities from the country has influenced them. I will mainly give an insider perspective by interviewing Turkish women but the essay also relates to articles about modernization’s effects on marriage forms.</p>

Die Mehrkörpersimulation (MKS) kommt in immer mehr Bereichen zum Einsatz. Bis vor einigen Jahren war das Thema fast ausschließlich im Automobilbereich wichtig. Heute wird der Ansatz in fast allen Bereichen der Technik, in dem „Bewegungsabläufe“ eine Rolle spielen, eingesetzt. Im Gegensatz zur Finite Elemente (FE)-Methode, für die eine detaillierte Bauteiltopologie mit einer Vielzahl von Elementen nötig ist, können mit MKS-Systemen selbst komplexe mechanische Systeme mit einer relativ geringen Anzahl an Freiheitsgraden abgebildet werden. Das Programm Adams hat diese Entwicklung maßgeblich mit gestaltet. Neben den Erweiterungen im Bereich der Solver und anderer mathematischer Formulierungen war immer die einfache Benutzerführung, die Integration von weiteren Simulationstechnologien und auch die Entwicklung von Spezialanwendungen ein wichtiges Thema der Entwicklung.
Im Rahmen dieses Vortrages wird der Einsatz von Adams an Hand von Beispielen demonstriert. Weiterer Schwerpunkt ist die Erweiterung der Modelle durch Berücksichtigung der elastischen Materialeigenschaften einzelner Bauteile. Thesis advisor: Dorothy A. Jones<br>Understanding Chief Nurse Executive (CNE) influence is essential for the discipline of nursing. There are approximately 5000 CNEs in the United States, all are tasked with being the primary identifiable leader representing organizations in which they are employed and the nursing profession of which they are a part. In this capacity, the CNE is the gatekeeper for the advancement of the majority of the 2.4 million nurses practicing in the U.S. Literature suggests that early CNEs lacked influence and often were not recognized members of organizational executive teams. Today, after two decades of struggle, CNEs are identified as essential executive team members. However, they still self identify as being less influential than their C-suite counterparts, leaving us to question, "Having gotten to the table, now what?" This study was designed as an initial step toward answering this question through Validation of the Adams Influence Model (AIM). The AIM is a framework that can be used to understand the influence of the CNE in the acute care setting. The study exposed the AIM to a qualitative data set collected as part of an academic medical center's Survey of the Professional Practice Environment. Directed content analysis was used to categorize survey responses and identify influence content toward validation and refinement of the AIM's operational definitions. Study results validated AIM influence factors and influence attributes with some refinement. In addition to development of a refined AIM, study findings also helped identify continued research opportunities. The thesis focuses on investigating and optimizing a bushing script implemented as a tool in MSC ADAMS/Car. The study provides an insight on the representation of a rubber bushing and identify parameters which can be used to define the properties of a bushing in a simulation environment such as ADAMS/Car. The tool being studied here can be used to implement different kind of bushings such as a hydro bushing and a general rubber bushing, but optimization was implemented for the rubber bushing only. With an increasing reliance on Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) tools in the designing process, it is necessary that the vehicle behaviour can be predicted without relying on physical testing. CAE tools reduces the need of prototypes and provides a faster approach to designing vehicles. MSC ADAMS/Car is one such tool, which has been used here to predict the vehicle dynamic behaviour, which will influence the ride, handling and comfort characteristics of the vehicle. Rubber bushings, which have been studied here, have a significant contribution to the overall stiffness of the vehicle and as such, it is imperative that the tool being used here, is accurate and makes the designing process easy. The rubber bushing can be imagined to be a combination of a non-linear elastic spring, a frequency dependent Maxwell component and an amplitude dependent frictional element. In order to ease the design of the bushing properties, a reduced number of input properties are used to calculate the bushing properties internally. While trying to validate the force hysteresis loop obtained through the model with the measured data, it was seen that the accuracy was quite poor for the model when loading it with dynamic loads corresponding to amplitudes of0.2 mm and lower. The quasi-static loading and dynamic loading above 0.2 mm is shown to have a satisfactory accuracy when compared to the measured data.

The beginning of thesis is dedicated to the theoretical study of the compute modelling electro-mechanical systems and mechatronics approach modelling manipulator’s systems. Next chapters describe the creation of kinematics model of the manipulator with using ADAMS and proposal supporting frame in ANSYS/Workbench environment. The next step, manipulator and supporting frame simulation model is created for the computing vibration a dynamic analysis. At the end of this thesis is used cosimulation ADAMS and Matlab/Simulink for the control of synchronous drivers of manipulator.

Debris flows caused by heavy rains occurred in November of 2006 on several Cascade volcanoes. Mt. Adams experienced debris flows in seven of eighteen drainages including Adams Creek, Big Muddy Creek, Lewis Creek, Little Muddy Creek, Muddy Fork, Rusk Creek and Salt Creek. Six debris flows occurred on the northeast side of the mountain. A landslide initiated one debris flow, three were initiated by heavy water flow and in channel landslides, and three were initiated by a coalescence of eroded channels (headless debris flows). Four pre-2006 debris flows were found in the Cascade Creek, Crofton Creek, Hellroaring Creek and Morrison Creek drainages. Every 2006 debris flow initiated in Quaternary glacial drift. Attributes of the drainages were investigated to determine differences between drainages with debris flows and those without. The upper basins of drainages with debris flows averaged 37% glacial coverage, 29% bedrock and 35% unconsolidated material. The upper basins of drainages without debris flows without averaged 12% glacial coverage, 63% bedrock, and 25% unconsolidated material. All of the drainages with debris flows were directly connected to a glacier, opposed to only 36% of the drainages without debris flows. Drainages with debris flows averaged 18% slopes above 33°, 10% vegetation, a gradient of 0.38, a Melton's Ruggedness Number of 0.62, an average annual rainfall of 2.16 m, and -52% glacier lost between 1904-2006. The upper basins of drainages without debris flows averaged 11% slopes above 33°, 18% vegetation, a gradient of 0.31, a MRN of 0.58, an average annual rainfall of 2.38 m, and -41% glacier lost between 1904-2006. A multiple logistic regression was performed to determine factors with highest influence on predicting the probability of a debris flow. Influencing factors were percent glacial coverage and average annual rainfall. They predicted the 2006 debris flows with an 89% accuracy rate. This model was used to produce a debris flow hazard map. Due to the number of Cascade volcanoes that experienced debris flows as a result of the November 2006 storm, data of this type could be combined from multiple mountains to construct a general Cascade Mountain debris flow hazard model.
