Abstract:
Résumé In apparent contradiction with the story of Adam as told in the Bible and the Qurʾān, Shiite tradition accepts the existence of several Adams (usually seven) prior to « our Adam », the father of mankind. Each Adam opened an era during which the earth was inhabited by « pre-Adamites », rational creatures preceding the appearance of the human species. In this paper we study the evolution of this myth of the pre-Adamites, starting from traditions attributed to the first Imams and their use in writings stemming from the Shiite milieu in Kūfa ; then we move to pre-Fatimid and Fatimid Ismailism, Druze and Nuṣayrī literature, before ending with the Ṭayyibī Ismailis. Although there are many differences in details, all these movements share a common myth, which was elaborated with a remarkable continuity from the first centuries of Islam until today. This myth is rooted in the sources of Shīʿism, which seem close to Manichaeism.

Abstract:
Alexander Winchell was hired by Vanderbilt University in 1875, the year the University opened under the jurisdiction of the Methodist Church South. As one of America's leading scientists Winchell was instantly Vanderbilt's most renowned faculty member. The man responsible for assembling Vanderbilt's first faculty, Bishop Holland McTyeire, recruited Winchell fervently. As a leading geologist and biologist Winchell was well published at the time of his hiring. His various beliefs regarding organic evolution, the age of the earth, and its geologic history were spelled out in his papers and books and there seems little reason to believe that Bishop McTyeire and the Methodists would have been in doubt about his views. While a Vanderbilt faculty member from 1875 to 1878 Winchell's additional writings and some of the lectures he gave became increasingly irritating to segments of the community. Finally, after his publication of Adamites and Preadamites in 1878, he was dismissed. However, this book about the races of mankind seems not to have been the sole reason for his dismissal, although it did serve as a catalyst to bring the entire matter to a head. The Dean of Vanderbilt's Biblical Department, Reverend T.O. Summers may have played a significant role in fostering an environment hostile to Winchell and his science. While appearing to be tolerant Summers may have been working behind the scenes against him. However, there can be little doubt that Winchell's beliefs and teachings regarding the historical development of the world and its inhabitants came to present an embarrassment for the Methodist hierarchy and those in control of the University. Although other "official" reasons were given at the time of his dismissal, the controversy nevertheless, ignited considerable debate and brought unhappiness to many quarters. The essential tenets of Winchell's scientific beliefs at the time of his coming to Vanderbilt, what he wrote and discussed while at Vanderbilt, as well as the overall circumstances and feelings expressed by those at Vanderbilt are the subjects of this paper.

Abstract:
Olivenite-Adamite Solid Solution From Oxidation Zone in Rędziny (West Sudetes, Poland)An extensive hydrothermal polymetallic mineralization with a well developed oxidation zone rich in secondary minerals occurs in dolostones several hundred meters from the Karkonosze granite at Rędziny. Using XRD and FTIR methods, mineral phases representing transitional members of the olivenite-adamite solid solution have been identified. Electron microprobe analyses reveal the most common varieties to be zincian olivenite and cuprous adamite with compositions ranging from (Cu1.17Zn0.83)(AsO4)(OH) to (Zn1.38Cu0.62)(AsO4)(OH). The two minerals are subordinate in the weathering zone which can be characterized as having been a zone of low Cu2+and Zn2+activity and with mineralizing solutions of increased pH. A high Ca2+concentration due to the ubiquitous presence of carbonate rocks resulted in the expansion of the stability field of another arsenate, conichalcite (or Zn-bearing conichalcite), which is a common mineral there.

Abstract:
AbstractStructural modifications with temperature of adamite, Zn2(AsO4)(OH), were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction up to dehydration and collapse of the crystal structure. In the temperature range 25–400°C, adamite shows positive and linear expansion. Axial thermal expansion coefficients, determined over this temperature range, are αa = 1.06(2) × 10–5 K–1, αb = 1.99(2) × 10–5 K–1, αc = 3.7(1) × 10–6 K–1 and αV = 3.43(3) × 10–5 K–1. Axial expansion is then strongly anisotropic with αa:αb:αc = 2.86: 5.38 : 1. Structure refinements of X-ray diffraction data collected at different temperatures allowed us to characterize the mechanisms by which the adamite structure accommodates variations in temperature. Expansion is limited mainly by edge sharing Zn(2) dimers along a and by edge sharing Zn(1) octahedra chains along c; on the other hand, connections of polyhedra along b, the direction of maximum expansion, is governed by corner sharing. Increasing temperature induces mainly an axial expansion of Zn(1) octahedron, which becomes more elongated, and no significant variations of the Zn(2) trigonal bipyramids and As tetrahedra. Starting from 400°C, deviation from a linear evolution of unit-cell parameters is observed, associated with some deterioration of the crystal, a sign of incipient dehydration. The process leads to the formation of Zn4(AsO4)2O.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper introduces a new two-parameter lifetime distribution, called the exponential-generalized truncated geometric (EGTG) distribution, by compounding the exponential with the generalized truncated geometric distributions. The new distribution involves two important known distributions, i.e., the exponential-geometric (Adamidis and Loukas, 1998) and the extended (complementary) exponential-geometric distributions (Adamidis et al., 2005; Louzada et al., 2011) in the minimum and maximum lifetime cases, respectively. General forms of the probability distribution, the survival and the failure rate functions as well as their properties are presented for some special cases. The application study is illustrated based on two real data sets.

Abstract:
The article analyzes Louis Adamic's early translation phase that included, apart from his translations from Slovenian, also Croatian literature. His translations had a double function: to help him improve his English and to promote him as a writer. He randomly chose some Croatian short stories which he partly translated and partly adapted. He also did his best to introduce the authors to the American readers. The stories were published in American magazines but Adamic's repeated effort to publish a book of Yugoslav translations sadly failed. In spite of this, he was an important groundbreaker in the field paving the way for other translators who followed in his wake.

Abstract:
This chapter illustrates how Kikuchi shrewdly understood that cultivating a relationship with a figure as influential as Louis Adamic could only help his future career and long-term interest in matters of race and ethnicity. After the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, Kikuchi indeed counted on the Adamics for practical and emotional support. Numerous later letters showed that Kikuchi considered Adamic's mentoring a welcome development, something he had lacked for so many years while away from his biological parents. However, despite Adamic sending Kikuchi many other similar texts, he rarely communicated with his acolyte at any great length or with any immediacy. As Kikuchi understood, his and Adamic's commonality had at least two sides: their visions and hopes for America coincided, and the two men's lives were similar versions of the immigrant's tale.

Abstract:
Chapter 5 focuses on how anticommunists used Adamic’s death, which the coroner ruled a suicide, to claim that Stalin murdered him. Anticommunists collectively constructed a version of his life intended to mute his antifascism and his criticisms of them, including his criticism that they embraced the fascist ethos. Anticommunists feared that Adamic’s repeated opposition to the communists could result in the public listening to his calls for a foreign policy that rejected colonialism and promoted peace. They smeared him before congressional committees and in the press. Some South Slavs helped advance the “Adamic as communist” narrative as a means of repenting their radical pasts. The chapter explores who else might have killed Adamic.
