Abstract:
Résumé In apparent contradiction with the story of Adam as told in the Bible and the Qurʾān, Shiite tradition accepts the existence of several Adams (usually seven) prior to « our Adam », the father of mankind. Each Adam opened an era during which the earth was inhabited by « pre-Adamites », rational creatures preceding the appearance of the human species. In this paper we study the evolution of this myth of the pre-Adamites, starting from traditions attributed to the first Imams and their use in writings stemming from the Shiite milieu in Kūfa ; then we move to pre-Fatimid and Fatimid Ismailism, Druze and Nuṣayrī literature, before ending with the Ṭayyibī Ismailis. Although there are many differences in details, all these movements share a common myth, which was elaborated with a remarkable continuity from the first centuries of Islam until today. This myth is rooted in the sources of Shīʿism, which seem close to Manichaeism.

Abstract:
Alexander Winchell was hired by Vanderbilt University in 1875, the year the University opened under the jurisdiction of the Methodist Church South. As one of America's leading scientists Winchell was instantly Vanderbilt's most renowned faculty member. The man responsible for assembling Vanderbilt's first faculty, Bishop Holland McTyeire, recruited Winchell fervently. As a leading geologist and biologist Winchell was well published at the time of his hiring. His various beliefs regarding organic evolution, the age of the earth, and its geologic history were spelled out in his papers and books and there seems little reason to believe that Bishop McTyeire and the Methodists would have been in doubt about his views. While a Vanderbilt faculty member from 1875 to 1878 Winchell's additional writings and some of the lectures he gave became increasingly irritating to segments of the community. Finally, after his publication of Adamites and Preadamites in 1878, he was dismissed. However, this book about the races of mankind seems not to have been the sole reason for his dismissal, although it did serve as a catalyst to bring the entire matter to a head. The Dean of Vanderbilt's Biblical Department, Reverend T.O. Summers may have played a significant role in fostering an environment hostile to Winchell and his science. While appearing to be tolerant Summers may have been working behind the scenes against him. However, there can be little doubt that Winchell's beliefs and teachings regarding the historical development of the world and its inhabitants came to present an embarrassment for the Methodist hierarchy and those in control of the University. Although other "official" reasons were given at the time of his dismissal, the controversy nevertheless, ignited considerable debate and brought unhappiness to many quarters. The essential tenets of Winchell's scientific beliefs at the time of his coming to Vanderbilt, what he wrote and discussed while at Vanderbilt, as well as the overall circumstances and feelings expressed by those at Vanderbilt are the subjects of this paper.

Abstract:
Olivenite-Adamite Solid Solution From Oxidation Zone in Rędziny (West Sudetes, Poland)An extensive hydrothermal polymetallic mineralization with a well developed oxidation zone rich in secondary minerals occurs in dolostones several hundred meters from the Karkonosze granite at Rędziny. Using XRD and FTIR methods, mineral phases representing transitional members of the olivenite-adamite solid solution have been identified. Electron microprobe analyses reveal the most common varieties to be zincian olivenite and cuprous adamite with compositions ranging from (Cu1.17Zn0.83)(AsO4)(OH) to (Zn1.38Cu0.62)(AsO4)(OH). The two minerals are subordinate in the weathering zone which can be characterized as having been a zone of low Cu2+and Zn2+activity and with mineralizing solutions of increased pH. A high Ca2+concentration due to the ubiquitous presence of carbonate rocks resulted in the expansion of the stability field of another arsenate, conichalcite (or Zn-bearing conichalcite), which is a common mineral there.

Abstract:
AbstractStructural modifications with temperature of adamite, Zn2(AsO4)(OH), were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction up to dehydration and collapse of the crystal structure. In the temperature range 25–400°C, adamite shows positive and linear expansion. Axial thermal expansion coefficients, determined over this temperature range, are αa = 1.06(2) × 10–5 K–1, αb = 1.99(2) × 10–5 K–1, αc = 3.7(1) × 10–6 K–1 and αV = 3.43(3) × 10–5 K–1. Axial expansion is then strongly anisotropic with αa:αb:αc = 2.86: 5.38 : 1. Structure refinements of X-ray diffraction data collected at different temperatures allowed us to characterize the mechanisms by which the adamite structure accommodates variations in temperature. Expansion is limited mainly by edge sharing Zn(2) dimers along a and by edge sharing Zn(1) octahedra chains along c; on the other hand, connections of polyhedra along b, the direction of maximum expansion, is governed by corner sharing. Increasing temperature induces mainly an axial expansion of Zn(1) octahedron, which becomes more elongated, and no significant variations of the Zn(2) trigonal bipyramids and As tetrahedra. Starting from 400°C, deviation from a linear evolution of unit-cell parameters is observed, associated with some deterioration of the crystal, a sign of incipient dehydration. The process leads to the formation of Zn4(AsO4)2O.

Abstract:
This paper introduces a new two-parameter lifetime distribution, called the exponential-generalized truncated geometric (EGTG) distribution, by compounding the exponential with the generalized truncated geometric distributions. The new distribution involves two important known distributions, i.e., the exponential-geometric (Adamidis and Loukas, 1998) and the extended (complementary) exponential-geometric distributions (Adamidis et al., 2005; Louzada et al., 2011) in the minimum and maximum lifetime cases, respectively. General forms of the probability distribution, the survival and the failure rate functions as well as their properties are presented for some special cases. The application study is illustrated based on two real data sets.

Abstract:
The article analyzes Louis Adamic's early translation phase that included, apart from his translations from Slovenian, also Croatian literature. His translations had a double function: to help him improve his English and to promote him as a writer. He randomly chose some Croatian short stories which he partly translated and partly adapted. He also did his best to introduce the authors to the American readers. The stories were published in American magazines but Adamic's repeated effort to publish a book of Yugoslav translations sadly failed. In spite of this, he was an important groundbreaker in the field paving the way for other translators who followed in his wake.

Abstract:
What might the Mass resemble among a people who never experienced the Fall? Montaigne's most famous essay, “Of Cannibals,” emerges as a radical response to this question when examined in the context of his time's religious polemic, a context from which the essay borrows much of its imagery. Unlike Protestant controversialists who disparaged Catholic eucharistic rites as barbarous, Montaigne suggests such religious prejudices prove little better than the cultural ones under which New World natives labored. He elects to pursue a line of religious inquiry opened up by Renaissance speculation that Amerindians might constitute a non-Adamite race in order to conduct a personal exploration of alternative practices of faith. This two-mindedness with regard to religion suggests that characterizations of Montaigne need to step beyond the categories of believer and unbeliever. Abandoning tendencies toward denominationalism and, more generally, toward affixing labels to heterodoxy allows for an investigation of the fully idiosyncratic experience of early modern belief.

Abstract:
Laser surface modification, using a continuous wave CO2 crosscurrent laser with generated beam power of 1 kW, was performed on the adamite steel, indefinite chilled cast iron and high speed steel rolls which were applied to the industries. Optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and micro Vickers hardness test were applied to reveal the microstructural details and hardness profiles of the laser treated zone. The results indicate that, laser treated zones of three roll samples consist of melting zone, phase transformation zone and heat affected zone. After laser treatment, the melting zone have low hardness compared to the phase transformation zone, but after tempering at 540°C for 1 hr, the hardness at the melting zone dramatically increases, because of the formation of the fresh martensite from retained austenite. In contrast, the hardness at the phase transformation zone sharply decreases as fresh martensite changed to tempered martensite. There are many small and well distributed FeS and MnS inclusions in the melting zone at the three roll samples.

AbstractSolution studies have been carried out on natural and synthetic arsenate minerals, which are often found in the oxide zones of base metal orebodies. Solubility products and free energy of formation data have been derived for the minerals olivenite, cornubite, clinoclase, adamite, legrandite, euchroite, duftite, conichalcite, austinite, bayldonite, and schultenite at 298.2 K (25 °C). The data have been used in turn to construct stability field diagrams illustrating the chemical conditions under which the various species may crystallize from aqueous solution. This equilibrium model is then compared with several natural occurrences of the arsenate suites and it is demonstrated that it can be used to explain a number of observed paragenetic sequences. Descriptions of solution conditions which describe the stabilities of the arsenate minerals with respect to more commonly found secondary minerals of Pb(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II) involve more complex calculations and estimates of the likely levels of various dissolved species, but it is shown how these may be taken into account in the development of a more complex equilibrium model.

Abstract The most famous piece of the collection of Rasāʾil written by the Ikhwān al-Ṣafāʾ is probably the animal fable included in Epistle 22, known in its English translation as “The Case of the Animals versus Man before the King of the Jinn.” The complexity and thematic richness of the work allows multiple readings and it has often been interpreted as a fable denouncing cruelty against animals. The abrupt ending of the work recognising the superiority of men, however, seems to contradict the ecological spirit that animates the debate. This article approaches this contradiction from a narratological point of view. Together with the genre of animal fables, especially the Kalīla wa-Dimna, the Ikhwān al-Ṣafāʾ rely heavily on the tradition of the qiṣaṣ al-anbiyāʾ to recreate a setting that would have evoked in the educated audiences both the descriptions of the pre-Adamite era, where animals were free and had the ability to speak, and the consequences of the creation of Adam and his preordained fall. The recognition of these parallelisms and other proleptic clues creates a gap between the expectations of the characters and those of the readers, which can be interpreted as dramatic irony.

The paper analyzes Louis Adamic 1940 story " The Old Alien by the Kitchen Window" as the foil to his 1928 reportage "The Bohunks".The latter provoked a violent controversy among Slovene Americans due to its honest, straightforward and none-too-flattering presentation of the Slavic immigrants in America known as the Bohunks. "The Old Alien" story is both a portrait of an individual as well as a broader cultural and social analysis of Slovene American life.

Abstract:
Abstract One of the major issues in Pauline studies of the last decades has been the picture of Judaism painted by Paul especially in his Letter to the Romans. To that end, scholarship first and foremost adduced contemporary Jewish sources without, however, reaching satisfactory results. The present paper, therefore, takes a different approach in that it works out the Stoic influence on Paul’s argumentation. To begin with, the Stoic character of the dilemma of the “I” in Rom 7:14–25, that wills the good, but fails to do so, is demonstrated. Thereupon, it is shown that Paul transfers insights of Stoic psychology not only to the Jewish-Adamitic “I” but also to Israel’s approach to the law that is reached by neither one. Paul in Romans, therefore, can be said to stoify the Jewish approach to the law which especially reflects in the formula “righteousness by works of the law”.

Abstract:
Swiss mice with chronicTrypanosoma bruceiinfections become refractory to subsequent infection withBabesia microtiandB. rodhaini. Infection withB. microti7 days afterT. bruceiresulted in an obvious inhibition of the babesia parasitaemias and this inhibition became more profound as the time interval between the infections increased, until at 17–20 days the parasitaemias were totally abolished. Even after intravenous injection of large numbers of parasites parasitaemias were inhibited. Similar inhibition was obtained in BALB/c mice but not in C57BL/6 mice. Mice with establishedT. bruceiinfections also showed reduced susceptibility toB. rodhaini. In mice similarly infected withT. bruceiand the malaria parasitesPlasmodium chabaudi chabaudiandP. c. adamithe pre-patent periods were noticeably prolonged but the subsequent parasitaemias were unaffected. Infections withP. yoeliiwere unaffected.Trypanosoma bruceiinfections were not affected by the intracellular parasites. Among the mechanisms investigated to explain these findings were changes in red blood cell populations, cross-reacting antigens, the release of toxic factors and the generation of activated oxygen species. None of these could account for the inhibition observed.

Abstract:
The extended exponential distribution introduced by Nadarajah and Haghighi in the year 2011, which is nowadays well known as NH distribution, has received increased attention in these days. In this paper, we provide a robust assessment report on the development of three more related extended versions of exponential (or Weibull) distributions. We assessed that which model was published earlier than the other ones and why the pioneer work was not cited properly or overlooked. For example, power generalized Weibull (PGW) introduced by Bagdonavic̆ios and Nikulin (and Nikulin and Haghighi) and extended Weibull by Dimitrakopoulou, Adamidis, and Loukas, which we call here as the DAL model, were published earlier than the NH model. The developments of these three models are stated. A new method for the construction of NH and DAL models is outlined. A literature review on NH and DAL models is presented, and generalized classes from these models are discussed. Furthermore, some corrections in NH moments are suggested, and alternative expressions for moments and incomplete moments of NH and DAL models are also developed.
