Abstract:
While touring Tahiti in 1891, the American historian Henry Adams compiled an album of large-scale photographic prints that he purchased from commercial studios in Papeete. Souvenir album making was a popular pursuit amongst nineteenth-century Euro-American travellers who used the opportunity to project, validate and narrate desired travel experiences. Unlike others, Adams’s album is seemingly random and banal and lacks any clear narrative. This article attempts to make sense of Adams’s album. It asks to what extent the photographs performed their common function and validated Adams’s experience and expectations of Tahiti. It questions what the album reflects of Adams’s background, tastes and position in the islands as an elite traveller. It considers what was available for Adams to purchase from Papeete’s commercial studios, businesses that traded at a key moment in Tahiti’s complex colonial history. This article suggests that the album is a site where Adams’s desires and despair in colonial Tahiti overlap and contradict. Ultimately, it is a sign of his disappointment in photography as a medium incapable of capturing his island experiences.

Abstract:
Henry Adams had a stroke upon hearing the news of the sinking of the Titanic and the Republican Party in 1912, but this was not the decline of the house of Adams from Puritanism to pessimism. Rather, Adams became America's first and most famous prickly Thomist–“Porcupinus Angelicus.”

Abstract:
A Boston Brahmin and “otherwise-minded” contrarian, Charles Francis Adams Jr., great-grandson of President John Adams, was one of many so-called “mugwumps” who protested the Spanish-American War. Clashing with the likes of Henry Cabot Lodge, Adams was alternately principled and practical, sensitive and racist, until his influence and the anti-imperialist movement waned at the turn of the twentieth century.

Abstract:
Objectives: ADAMTS (A Disintegrin And Metalloproteinase with ThromboSpondin repeats) proteinases, which are released outside the cell (soluble) have very critical roles in damage and repair of extracellular matrix (ECM) processes. Our aim was to analyse the ADAMTS-1 and ADAMTS-9 which were the member of the ADAMTS gene family of metalloproteinases that might had been involved in the cytokines-mediated etiopathogenesis of endometriosis. Methods: A case-control study was performed in an university hospital. Thirty-four patient with endometriosis which was defined via laparoscopy and thirty-three healthy female volunteers were recruited in the present study. Serum ADAMTS-1 and ADAMTS-9 and IL-beta (IL-1 β) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) levels were determined by a human enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA) in all subjects. Results: The demographic characteristics of the patients were significantly higher than healthy control group. The IL-1 β and VEGF levels were significantly higher; ADAMTS-1 and ADAMTS-9 levels were significantly lower in the endometriosis patients compared to the controls. We also found a negative correlation between ADAMTS-1, ADAMTS-9, and IL-1 β, VEGF. Conclusion: The results of the study might suggest that ADAMS-1 and ADAMTS-9 have a role in the pathogenesis of the endometriosis.

Qi, Bing, Han Liu, Ying Dong, et al. "The nine ADAMs family members serve as potential biomarkers for immune infiltration in pancreatic adenocarcinoma." PeerJ 8 (September 30, 2020): e9736. http://dx.doi.org/10.7717/peerj.9736.

Full text
Abstract:
Background The functional significance of ADAMs family members in the immune infiltration of pancreatic adenocarcinoma (PAAD) awaits elucidation. Methods ADAMs family members with significant expression were identified among differentially expressed genes of PAAD based on The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database followed by a verification based on the Oncomine database. The correlation of ADAMs in PAAD was estimated with the Spearman’s rho value. The pathway enrichment of ADAMs was performed by STRING and GSEALite, respectively. The protein–protein interaction and Gene Ontology analyses of ADAMs and their similar genes were exanimated in STRING and visualized by Cytoscape. Subsequently, the Box-Whisker plot was used to show a correlation between ADAMs and different tumor grade 1/2/3/4 with Student’s t-test. TIMER was applied to estimate a correlation of ADAMs expressions with immune infiltrates and immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) immunotherapy-related molecules. Furthermore, the effect of copy number variation (CNV) of ADAMs genes was assessed on the immune infiltration levels. Result ADAM8/9/10/12/15/19/28/TS2/TS12 were over-expressed in PAAD. Most of the nine ADAMs had a significant correlation. ADAM8/12/15/19 expression was remarkably increased in the comparison between grade 1 and grade 2/3 of PAAD. ADAM8/9/10/12/19/28/TS2/TS12 had a positive correlation with almost five immune infiltrates. ADAM12/19/TS2/TS12 dramatically related with ICB immunotherapy-related molecules. CNV of ADAMs genes potentially influenced the immune infiltration levels. Conclusion Knowledge of the expression level of the ADAMs family could provide a reasonable strategy for improved immunotherapies to PAAD.

Abstract:
SummaryThe ADAMs are a family of membrane proteins possessing a disintegrin and metalloprotease domain. Currently,34 members are known to exist. Approximately 50% of the ADAMs contain a metalloprotease-like domain and some of these have been shown to possess protease activity. Most of the protein substrates identified to date for ADAMs are either integral membrane or extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins. In addition to hydrolysing proteins, a number of ADAMs bind to integrins. The attachment to integrins occurs via the disintegrin domain. Since the ADAMs can play a role in both proteolysis and adhesion, they have been implicated in a variety of biological processes such as sperm-egg fusion, somatic cell-cell adhesion, ecto-domain shedding, myoblast fusion and development. Altered expression of certain ADAMs has been associated with a number of diseases including asthma, arthritis, Alzheimer’s disease, atherosclerosis and cancer.Theme paper: Part of this paper was originally presented at the joint meetings of the 16th International Congress of the International Society of Fibrinolysis and Proteolysis (ISFP) and the 17th International Fibrinogen Workshop of the International Fibrinogen Research Society (IFRS) held in Munich, Germany, September, 2002.
