Abstract Although The Library Of America was planned to consist of literary classics, it has already found space for the masterpieces of two historians. The first of these was Francis Parkman’s France and England in North America. There could have been little debate about Henry Adams’s work on the age of Jefferson and Madison qualifying for a place beside Parkman as a classic or any question about its author being considered literary. But Adams (1838-1918), though only 15 years younger, was more than a literary generation removed from Parkman (1823-93), the great romantic.
