Peters, Jason Christian. "Web information systems : a study of maintenance, change and flexibility." Thesis, Brunel University, 2010. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/5460.

Abstract:
Information Systems (IS’s) have provided organisations with huge efficiency gains and benefits over the years; however an outstanding problem that is yet to be successfully tackled is that of the troublesome maintenance phase. Consuming vast resources and thwarting business progression in a competitive global market place, system maintenance has been recognised as one of the key areas where IS is failing organisations. Organisations are too often faced with the dilemma of either replacement or the continual upkeep of an unwieldy system. The ability for IS’s to be able to adapt to exogenous influences is even more acute today than at any time in the past. This is due to IS’s namely, Web Information Systems (WIS’s) increasingly and continually having to accommodate the needs of organisations to interconnect with a plethora of additional systems as well as supporting evolving business models. The richness of the interconnectivity, functionalities and services WIS’s now offer are shaping social, cultural and economic behaviour on a truly global scale, making the maintenance of such systems and evermore pertinent issue. The growth and proliferation of WIS’s shows no sign of abating which leads to the conclusion that what some have termed as the ‘maintenance iceberg’ should not be ignored. The quandary that commercial organisations face is typically driven by two key aspects; firstly, systems are built on the cultural premise of using fixed requirements, with not enough thought or attention being paid to systems abilities to deviate from these requirements. Secondly, systems do not generally cope well with adapting to unpredictable change arising from outside of the organisations environment. Over the recent past, different paradigms, approaches and methods have attempted to make software development more predictable, controllable and adaptable, however, the benefits of such measures in relation to the maintenance dilemma have been limited. The concept of flexible systems that are able to cope with such change in an efficient manner is currently an objective that few can claim to have realised successfully. The primary focus of the thesis was to examine WIS post-development change in order to empirically substantiate and understand the nature of the maintenance phase. This was done with the intention to determine exactly ‘where’ and ‘how’ flexibility could be targeted to address these changes. This study uses an emergent analytical approach to identify and catalogue the nature of change occurring within WIS maintenance. However, the research framework design underwent a significant revision as the initial results indicated that a greater emphasis and refocus was required to achieve the research objective. To study WIS’s in an appropriate and detailed context, a single case study was conducted in a web development software house. In total the case study approach was used to collect empirical evidence from four projects that investigated post-development change requests in order to identify areas of the system susceptible to change. The maintenance phases of three WIS projects were considered in-depth, resulting in the collection of over four hundred change requests. The fourth project served as a validation case. The results are presented and the findings are used to identify key trends and characteristics that depict WIS maintenance change. The analytical information derived from the change requests is consolidated and shown diagrammatically for the key areas of change using profile models developed in this thesis. Based on the results, the thesis concludes and contributes to the ongoing debate that there is a discernable difference when considering WIS maintenance change compared to that of traditional IS maintenance. The detailed characteristics displayed in the profile models are then used to map specific flexibility criteria that ultimately are required to facilitate change. This is achieved using the Flexibility Matrix of Change (FMoC) tool which was developed within the remit of this research. This tool is a qualitative measurement scheme that aligns WIS maintenance changes to a reciprocal flexibility attribute. Thus, the wider aim of this thesis is to also expand the awareness of flexibility and its importance as a key component of the WIS lifecycle.

Abstract:
Recent research on the contribution of cognitive and social factors to psychopathology has been narrowly focused on isolated cognitive-social aspects of adjustment. This study takes a broader perspective by examining a) cognitive structure in addition to cognitive content and b) general aspects of interpersonal style rather than isolated social behaviors. Maladjustment was. examined with respect to premorbid history as well as current adjustment. The hypotheses were that cognitive integration interacts with cognitive complexity to influence psychological disturbance; that a positive relationship exists between interpersonal flexibility and psychopathology; and that a positive relationship exists between the proportion of ambiguous constructs which they employ and a person's level of psychopathology.

ABSTRACT - For centuries the prosperity and growth of cities were entirely related to the success of the commercial activities. The markets are important buildings at an urban level, with a central place in the life of a neighbourhood they provide social interaction, enable the development and revival of the local economy and also work as effective tools for rehabilitation of urban degraded areas. All buildings evolve and throughout their life can acquire distinct functions from the ones that originated them. For the sake of preservation of resources which is justified in the construction sector, it is desirable the creation of strategies in project / construction that allow the buildings to keep pace with the experience (s) of the site over time. With the progress and diversity of construction methods today it is possible to create an architecture more adaptable and flexible without losing relevance and recognizability. This work seeks to develop a building that aproches the concept of traditional market and the social dynamism it provides, with the ability to adapt as the needs of society and capable of retaining an identity that extends over time regardless of the function changes that it may suffer in the future.

Schmalz, Jonathan E. "Development and Validation of a Measure of Religious and Spiritual Flexibility." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2014. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc700031/.

Abstract:
Religion and spirituality are vital aspects of many people’s lives both in the United States and across the globe. Although many constructs and measures exist to describe and assess the experience of pursuing the sacred, the complexity of religious and spiritual experience leads to mixed results in relation to well-being and psychopathological traits. However, in broad terms, the relationship appears positive. Over the past 30 years the need for more refined and useful approaches to the study of religious and spiritual behavior has been repeatedly acknowledged. Although authors wisely caution development of further measures without due cause, extant constructs and measures do not provide clear and consistent results for understanding the influence of one’s relationships to religion and spirituality upon behaviors of clinical interest. The present project drew from the functional contextual concept of psychological flexibility, which provides clarity to understanding the encouragement and maintenance of psychological well-being. A new construct of religious and psychological flexibility is explicated as a functional approach to understanding religious and spiritual behavior in a manner that is useful in research and clinical settings alike. The development and evaluation of the Measure of Religious and Spiritual Flexibility (MRSF) is described. The MRSF evidenced adequate internal consistency and test-retest reliability. Confirmatory factor analysis results were positive, but indicate further refinement. Analyses suggested good construct validity of the MRSF in relation to psychological well-being and psychopathology; construct validity in relation to extant constructs in the psychology of religion was varied. Implications and future directions are discussed.

Abstract:
The concept of adaptability in architecture is one that very often bears technical rather than social connotations. What are the mechanisms and systems that allow buildings to adapt to fluctuating environmental and climatic conditions? These responses are often the driving force behind design considerations, placing emphasis on the manner in which the technical resolutions facilitate appropriate adaptability and environmental response. This adaptability is generally addressed through the building envelope, which acts as the mediator between the interior conditions of a building, and the exterior conditions of its environment (Lovell, 2010). However, beyond addressing these environmental conditions, there are greater urban and social conditions that bear equal weight within any design inquiry. Building adjacencies, ethnographics, social development and imageability of spatial ordering are all fundamental factors that need to be addressed within building envelope design (Lovell, 2010). The design dissertation inquiry explores the multi-faceted nature of building envelopes as well as an architecture of internal and external thresholds. The inquiry examines ways in which building envelopes respond to both the environmental and social complexities of a context, as well as how internal and external threshold and edge conditions can be design generative and communicative; expressing spatial organisations, conditions of privacy and mechanisms of adaptability. This topic of adaptive envelopes and defining thresholds in relation to social complexities has been explored in an architectural design project, which aims to practically address social and environmental issues. This exploration yields a set of key findings into an architecture of thresholds and adaptability in response to the sociotechnical conditions of a context where the lines between the formal and informal are blurred.

Abstract:
Traumatic events such as natural disasters and violence are still happening around the world. While most of the studies on traumatic events focus more on the pathological end of the continuum, research related to their impact on more generic aspects, such as the psychological well-being of individuals, is comparatively less. Furthermore, flexibility has been posited to play a crucial role in the development of psychological well-being in adolescents but its significance has seldom been examined in the context of traumatic events. In addition, the construct and characteristics of flexibility have never been discussed before and no self-report measurement of emotional flexibility exists. Therefore, this thesis attempts to fill these gaps and extend our understanding of both the knowledge of flexibility and its role in the psychological well-being of Chinese adolescents. The nature of study 1 represents the ground work of this research, with the purpose of developing and validating a qualified self-report measurement of emotional flexibility in order to lay the foundation for answering the main research question of this study. A panel meeting was used at the very beginning to generate an item pool consisting of an inventory of emotional flexibility subscales: Exploratory Factor Analysis and Confirmatory Factor Analysis were employed to test the subscale structures as well as for the total scale of emotional flexibility. A three-factor model for match, the subscale of emotional flexibility and the total model comprising one higher-order factor of emotional flexibility derived from the 5 first-order factors, with 10 and 30 items respectively, have all been confirmed. The purpose of study 2 is to clarify the construct of flexibility by investigating the relationships connected to flexibility in cognitive, behavioral and emotional aspects, as well as the relation between flexibility in these three aspects and coping flexibility. The participants in study 2 were 941 adolescents recruited from three middle schools with different levels of earthquake exposure in Sichuan. The results show that cognitive flexibility mediates the relationship between emotional flexibility and behavioral flexibility. Moreover, coping flexibility was found to be related to flexibility in three aspects in different manners. Study 3 has been designed to answer the main research question of this study: what role does flexibility play in the psychological well-being of adolescents with earthquake experiences. A cross-sectional survey was performed to test the effect of flexibility in cognitive, behavioral and emotional aspects on the relationship between earthquake exposure and psychological well-being. The data in this study was the same as for those in study two. The results show that emotional flexibility and cognitive flexibility had moderating effects between earthquake exposure and psychological well-being. The thesis has developed a measurement tool, clarified the construct and summarized the characteristics of flexibility as well as explored the role of flexibility in the psychological well-being of adolescents. The implications and limitations as well as future directions are proposed as well.

Abstract:
Over the last 15 years, spectacular advances in the analysis and design of graph-basedcodes and iterative decoding techniques paved the way for the development of error correctionsystems operating very close to the theoretical Shannon limit. A prominent rolehas been played by the class of Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) codes, introduced inthe early 60's by Gallager's and described latter in terms of sparse bipartite graphs. In theearly 2000's, LDPC codes were shown to be capacity approaching codes for a wide rangeof channel models, which motivated the increased interest of the scientific community andsupported the rapid transfer of this technology to the industrial sector. Over the past fewyears there has been an increased interest in non-binary LDPC codes due to their enhancedcorrection capacity. Although Gallager already proposed in his seminal work the use ofnon-binary alphabets (by using modular arithmetic), non-binary LDPC codes defined overfinite fields have only been investigated starting with the late 90's. They have been provento provide better performance than their binary counterparts when the block-length issmall to moderate, or when the symbols sent through channel are not binary, which is thecase for high-order modulations or for multiple-antennas channels. However, the performancegain comes at a non-negligible cost in the decoding complexity, which may prohibitthe use of non-binary LDPC codes in practical systems, especially when the price to payin decoding complexity is too high for the performance gain that one can get. This thesis addresses the analysis and design of non-binary LDPC codes for fadingchannels. The main goal is to demonstrate that besides the gain in the decoding performance, the use of non-binary LDPC codes can bring additional benefits that may offsetthe extra cost in decoding complexity. Flexibility and diversity are the two benefitsthat we demonstrate in this thesis. The exibility is the capacity of a coding system toaccommodate multiple coding rates through the use of a unique encoder/decoder pair. Thediversity of a coding system relates to its capacity to fully exploit the communicationchannel's heterogeneity. The first contribution of the thesis is the development of a Density Evolution approximationmethod, based on the Monte-Carlo simulation of an infinite code. We showthat the proposed method provides accurate and precise estimates of non-binary ensemblethresholds, and makes possible the optimization of non-binary codes for a wide range ofapplications and channel models. The second contribution of the thesis consists of the analysis and design of flexiblecoding schemes through the use of puncturing. We show that the non-binary LDPCcodes are more robust to puncturing than their binary counterparts, thanks to the factthat non-binary symbol-nodes can be only partially punctured. For regular codes, we showthat the design of puncturing patterns must respect different rules depending on whetherthe symbol-nodes are of degree 2 or higher. For irregular codes we propose an optimizationprocedure and we present optimized puncturing distributions for non-binary LDPC codes, iiiwhich exhibit a gap to capacity between 0.2 and 0.5dB , for punctured rates varying from0.5 to 0.9.The third contribution investigates the non-binary LDPC codes transmitted over aRayleigh (fast) fading channel, in which different modulated symbols are affected by differentfading factors. In case of one-to-one correspondence between modulated and codedsymbols, deep fading can make some coded symbols totally unrecoverable, leading to apoor system performance. In order to avoid this phenomenon, binary diversity can beexploited by using a bit-interleaver module placed between the encoder and the modulator. We propose an optimized interleaving algorithm, inspired from the Progressive Edge-Growth (PEG) method, which ensures maximum girth of th

Abstract:
The situation of the housing stockin Sweden is at present imbalanced, as has often been the case throughout history, due to thedifficulty of its prediction.Society is constantly changingand thus it ́s economical, social and demographical conditions with itwhich affects the way we build. Swedens housing need is within the next ten years expected to vary between numbers of 592000-664 000 dwellings. A relatively high number. This study is therefore an investigation into the means available for meeting the demands posed by the society of today and of tomorrow on our housing stock. The investigation, conducted via literature studies, in conjunction with an iterative projecting process, has found the means most apt to meet these demands to be a plurality of flexible solutions that can be easily adapted with regards to the very unpredictability of said demands. These means are put together into an analysis-and method tool consisting of a number of criterias to ensure ”the flexible dwelling”. The aim of the study is to investigate the means available and how they are used most effectively in order to develop a housing stock capable of adaptating to current needs and demands. The ability of adaptation would in this case act as an buffer to the unpredictability and inevitabel shortcomings of the market. These dwellings capable of withstanding the tides of time would therefore become more sought after in the long run. These solutions will in turn help to champion a more sustainable housing development. The goal of the study is to be ableto present a functionally flexible floorplan that will simultaneously meet the requirements stipulated by swedish state regulations. The result showcases, with the help of six quality criteria for flexible projecting, three separate alternatives of floorplans and their respective relations and adaptibility visavi the conditions of todays housing situation.

ABSTRACT: The cities of the interior of Portugal are facing economic difficulties losing inhabitants to other urban centres located in the coast. In Portalegre, a city of Roman settlement, with several centuries of history and buildings representing the various architectural periods, the growth of in the city throughout the end of the 20th century was disorganized and peripheral, making the intervention in the historical nucleus of the city become a priority, connecting the different types of urban fabrics. Currently, there are initiatives that aim to economically and culturally develop the city which take into account the site and the specific indications and goals of the Municipal Master Plan. Thus a proposal was developed with Housing as the main use. Since this is a region in which traditional housing is based on principles of adaptability and evolution and that we are facing a period of constant changes in society that will also change the realities that need to be answered, we decided to work the theme of Flexibility, designing the spaces as adaptable to its dwellers and their needs, combining them with local architectural specificities. In a first phase a section of the city (neighbourhood) was developed in order to solve an expectant area of the city and in a second phase working the housing proposal through the qualities of the local vernacular housing.

ABSTRACT: This research proposes a reflection on the architecture’s ability to adapt to the dynamic use of dwelling. Contemporary society, facing globalization and technological evolution, is constantly changing. Presently it can be noted, not only a change in households but also in groups that share the space within the house. In this sense, it seems appropriate to consider the domestic space as an evolutionary reality, able to adapt to their inhabitants needs. Considering the instability and social disparity verified, we intend to conceive a housing model that follows its users lifecycles by exploiting their ability to adapt to change. Through a research by project we seek to define flexibility in its multiple facets, as well as to identify architectural strategies that add flexibility and adaptability to the domestic space. The work starts from the development of a generic house, in which are introduced the concepts and strategies of flexibility enunciated, and verifies its adaptation to a multifunctional building inserted into the territory now occupied by the Santo António dos Capucho’s Hospital, in the specific context of the consolidated city that characterizes Santana's hill.

ABSTRACT: We live today in a world defined by instability, unpredictability and the speed of technological advances; we live in a complex society, of heterogeneous practices and constantly changing, to which the architecture has not always been able to respond. Indeed, if the lifestyles and the needs change, the architecture will also need to change; if people and practices are different, the architecture must prove versatile and adaptable. It is aimed, with this work, alert to the importance of embrace change as an intrinsic factor to architectural production, incorporating flexibility in the act of thought and design. By taking an urban void in Largo do Intendente, the work reflects about flexibility as a potentially qualifying characteristic of architecture, capable of produce appropriate solutions to the demands, current and future, of its users. More than that, it explores and analyzes strategies, that enable its practical application and which are reflected later in the case of project.

Abstract:
This thesis explores how the question of added flexibility in the real estate product is handled by Swedish commercial real estate developers. Theoretically this problem can be solved with a real options approach. Traditionally the use of real options analysis in practice in commercial real estate has been limited. The results indicate that the use of real options analysis is limited also in the Swedish commercial real estate market. Traditional investment methods coupled with rules of thumb that determine appropriate flexibility levels continue to dominate. The results highlight some of these rules of thumb. The commercial developers do argue in favor of flexible designs in locations where there is higher uncertainty, this result is in line with real options theory. Future research is needed to assess how effective this rule of thumb approach is to determining the appropriate level of flexibility in a real estate product compared to a real options approach.

ABSTRACT: We live today in a society where contemporary practices are ruled increasingly by unpredictability and diversity; complex and constantly changing lifestyles, to which architecture has not yet fully responded, especially in the cities where there is a larger intersections of cultures and different realities. The Flexibility in the Domestic Interior presents the result of a search for concepts and strategies, which combined are able to produce flexible solutions in architecture. Associated with an idea to break with the misfits and insensitive models to the context. In fact, if the lifestyles and own circumstances change constantly, the challenge is to let architecture become a versatile and adptable object. The application of the studied methods, it happens through the develompment of a practical strategy of intervention. which envolves the revitalization of Bairro da Ajuda, more precisely in urban void next to Palácio da Ajuda. Edding beyond the application of implementing flexibility strategies, we are looking for a solution that can approach to new ways of living and that improves life, unesxpected and unpredictabel, as it should be, with all its changes, through the course of time.

ABSTRACT: In a city, characterized by a great historical component, which nowadays is still visible in the urban landscape, we can find Alcântara, and urban area that is a result from the expansion of Lisbon. The need to consolidate this territory comes from a long industrial past, which over time has gradually led to the abandonment of these, now obsolete, spaces and to a demarcated fragmentation of the urban fabric. The theme of the project is developed around this problem, for which a reflection has been expounded, in order to comprehend and find possible solution for an urban evolution that allows the city never to lose it’s unique character. The proposal comes to materialize a functional program, directed to the creation of several elements, which aims to respond to social and urbanistic aspects, through a regeneration of urban space, connected to a logic of a community life and an architecture with a purpose to respond to a continuous change of a contemporary society. Progressively, arises the idea that a building, capable of dealing with a change of use and a continuous evolution of the urban context, responds more accordingly to issues concerning urban aspects and satisfaction of each individual’s needs. With this in mind, the concepts of flexibility and adaptability take form, such as the awareness about a new way of thinking architecture for a resilient city.

Abstract:
The issue of rapid change in environmental conditions under which ecosystem processes and human interventions will take place in the future is relatively new to forestry, whereas the provision of ecosystem services, e.g., timber or fresh water, is at the very heart of the original concept of forest management. Forest managers have developed ambitious deterministic approaches to provide the services demanded, and thus the use of deterministic approaches for adapting to climate change seem to be a logical continuation. However, as uncertainty about the intensity of climate change is high, forest managers need to answer this uncertainty conceptually. One may envision an indeterministic approach to cope with this uncertainty; but how the services will be provided in such a concept remains unclear. This article aims to explore the fundamental aspects of both deterministic and indeterministic approaches used in forestry to cope with climate change, and thereby point out trade-offs in service provisioning and adaptability. A forest owner needs to be able to anticipate these trade-offs in order to make decisions towards sustainable forest management under climate change.

Abstract:
Modeling business processes allows enterprises to abstract and understand business workflows from many years. In the same time, business requirements and enterprise behaviors evolved: more and more, business processes are deployed for an organization but in several different environments. Thus, such structures need to model and deploy their business processes in several specific environments and in an adaptive way to care about these specificities. This issue concerns the flexibility of the business processes and their adaptation to the variability of environment in which they are deployed. The V BPMI method considers this purpose of the process flexibility by considering an intentional orientation (with a formal description of the goal a business process reaches) and a contextual orientation (with a formal description of the environment in which it is relevant to deploy and execute an adapted business process). This method introduces the process lines, identified with a business goal, and process variants, discriminated with a formal context, as major concepts for the flexibility support. It introduces too some operators and a process modeling and adaptation language, V BPMN. In addition, two approaches for flexible processes definition and adaptation are proposed. Moreover, the V BPMI method relies on a knowledge model and is supported by an architecture, V BPME, and a software prototype. In fact, this method, developed in collaboration with the AP HM within the PERCILES project, has been introduced and tested with pharmacists, with a focus on the drug circulation process

Abstract:
I have designed a housing project that is an infill to an existing housing block in the city center of Stockholm. When I started this project the themes everydayness and building typology was central for me. That is why I also chose to work with the site Sälgen 4; a corner site and one of few remaining gaps in the block structure of the city center. Today there is a gas station on the site, which I for this project presume could be removed. When working with this project I found interest in what simplified could be called soft flexibility, where measurement, shape and connection to other spaces are dealt with in order to enable for different kinds of usage. This type of flexibility I encountered when studying late 19th century dwellings in Stockholm city center. I have developed similar apartments, often with a size of about 140 m2 with 4,5 rooms and an additional kitchen. Even all the room units are similar with over 4 m width and close to square shapes. This enabled the creation of very generic spaces but also introduced me to an interesting paradox; the on the architectural drawing less dynamic floor plan create on the other hand the most dynamic ways to inhabit the spaces. Also the loggia has been an important feature in my design.

Abstract:
System evolvability is vital to the longevity of large-scale complex engineered systems. The need for evolvability in complex systems is a result of their long service lives, rapid advances to their integrated technologies, unforeseen operating conditions, and emerging system requirements. In recent years, quantifiable metrics have been introduced for measuring the evolvability of complex systems based on the amount of excess capability in the system. These metrics have opened opportunities for optimization of systems with evolvability as an objective. However, there are several aspects of such an optimization that require further consideration. For example, there is a trade-off between the cost of excess capability initially built into complex systems and the benefit that is added to the system for future evolution. This trade-off must be represented in the optimization problem formulation. Additionally, uncertainty in future requirements and parameters of complex systems can result in an inaccurate representation of the design space. This thesis addresses these considerations through multi-objective optimization and uncertainty analysis. The resulting analysis gives insight into the effects of designing for evolvability. We show that there is a limit to the value added by increasing evolvability. We also show that accounting for uncertainty changes the optimal amount of evolvability that should be designed into a system. The developed theories and methods are demonstrated on the design of a military ground vehicle.

Abstract:
Agility is referred to as the ability of a firm to proactively or reactively adapt successfully to rapid changes within the business environment both internally and externally. The Post-Merger Integration (PMI) phase is characterized by rapid organizational changes which require new strategy methods that suit the nature of today’s fast paced business environments. Though characterized by changes, the PMI presents an opportune moment for the transformation of a business by exploring and exhausting the innovation potential of the integrating firms through the use of agile aspects that seek to identify risks and explore opportunities in a nimble manner. These aspects are several, but in this study, we delve into three namely, flexibility, adaptability and customer focus. The aspects of agility originated from fields of Software Development and are fairly new to the discipline of Business Administration but are considered to be evolving and popular across other fields of study. The current era is noted by scholars as the Scaled Agile Framework Development Era which is characterized by an emergence in agile frameworks that aid in large scale programs of an organization, such as the PMI in this case. This era represents a steppingstone to business agility, the future of agility that seeks to transform an organization to be adaptive to changes. The purpose of this study is to develop an agile framework drawing from empirical findings of the use of agility aspects in the context of a merger and acquisition, more specifically, the post-merger integration phase, to act as an innovation catalyst. To obtain insights and a better understanding on what we set ourselves to research, we explore an embedded single case study of a firm operating in a traditional industry, the maritime industry, in order to investigate the following research question:How can agility in the context of a Post-Merger Integration (PMI) contribute toinnovation? Eight semi-structured interviews with senior executives and senior managers of the case company were conducted in order to draw insights on their previous experiences with mergers and acquisitions. Empirical evidence was collected and coded in line with the Gioia methodology and with the aid of references to extant literature we began to build theory thereof. Our findings revealed that agile aspects may be adopted to complement and not necessarily replace existing hierarchical structures, procedures and processes within the PMI. Additionally, all three aspects of agility we sought to investigate prove to be useful to promote innovation in PMIs when adopted. The theoretical contribution of our study is the development of an agile framework that may be utilized in the PMI to identify, exploit and exhaust the innovation potential of the M&A activity. Furthermore, the framework may be validated in a different company or setting other than the company under study.

ABSTRACT: In this research, is explored in a flexible vision, the ability of the domestic space has in turn. Investigating the changes to the social, technical and technological level in recent decades, the changes are evident in the home, including the invasion of technology in the home. Configuration changes in family structures and the human being and, consequently, in the form of living have led to the transformation and evolution of living spaces. It appears therefore, fragmentation between housing models are available and current needs, leading to rethink the internal logic of the domestic space. To this end, runs through the evolution of the house as a starting point, it explores the concept of flexibility in all its aspects, in order to investigate the strategic architectural flexibility to implement the project, involving the communion of dwelling and work at home inside. It was developed a flexible housing model that includes not only the space to inhabit as a workspace – SOHO - allows a diverse ownership and greater adaptability to the lifecycles of users. Articulate the house with the workspace suggests an answer to the changing needs of working from home, providing relationship with it, without neglecting the domestic life and its various appropriations. The proposal is based on a housing project-majority character set, including trade/ services, public spaces a and leisure as a way to characterize and enhance the area of Marvila.

ABSTRACT: Housing is directly linked to the population, encompasses economic issues, social and cultural barriers that go beyond urban forms and this reflects in the housing strategies and policies of cities. London, from the time of industrialization (18th century) - in which the city went from rural to urban and that led to the increase of urbanization - to the present day (21st century) suffers from the consequences of accelerated growth population. Classified as a global city, London has a very important role in the world economic system and is also considered a megacity, as it has more than 11 million inhabitants, including its metropolitan area. As a result of this densification, residents feel the crisis with the lack of affordable housing, especially in the city center, where many end up preferring to live in more remote areas or in neighboring cities. The capital of England needs to quickly build more housing in a short time to be able to meet current demand. As a way to fill the housing deficit, the present work aims to create modular and flexible housing, easy to be built and expanded, able to be adapted to different contexts in the city. These housing units are directly related to the concept of urban nomadism, designed for a constantly changing public.

Abstract:
An important factor in system longevity is service-phase evolvability, which is defined as the ability of a system to physically transform from one configuration to a more desirable configuration while in service. These transformations may or may not be known during the design process, and may or may not be reversible. A study of 210 engineered systems was performed and found that system excess and modularity allow a system to evolve while in service. Building on these observations, this thesis introduces mathematical relationships that map a system's excess and modularity to that system's ability to evolve. These relationships are derived from elastic potential energy theories. The use of the evolvability measure, and other related measures presented herein, are illustrated with simple numerical examples and applied to the design of US Navy nuclear aircraft carriers. Using these relationships, it is shown that the Navy's new Ford-class aircraft carrier is the most evolvable carrier designed to date. Though the evolvability relationships introduced here are generically derived based on excess and modularity, the aircraft carrier example presented considers only the system excess.

The concept which has been developed is based on defined production methods and production processes which are necessary for quality machinery and equipment in order to identify specifically, the number of machines required and the resulting costs. The developed concept contributes to creating a business goal and strategy-driven value creation process in all areas of production management of the manufacturing company. Since the core concept is dynamic dimensioning, it is imperative to take into account the load of the production system and how it changes over time; and is therefore both flexible and adaptable. Furthermore, automation of the planning process in conjunction with the use of optimization techniques and simulation cost is sought. Different scenarios allow the comparison of newly developed concepts with a variety of procedures which already exist

Abstract:
Supervisory systems are computational systems which allow information monitoring of production processes or automation and technical plant devices. This paper proposes a framework for building supervisory systems, targeted to mobile devices, such as Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs), cell phones and Pocket PCs. The proposed framework allows the development of supervisory systems with three main characteristics: (i) supervision screens, which graphically depict the technical plant, are built using an object oriented model that uses concepts of the application area, allowing a direct mapping of real world concepts, such as automation devices to a computational model; (ii) the supervisory systems project presents flexibility about the available computational resources, offering options for local or remote storing of multimedia and graphical data, with the purpose of not overloading the mobile devices where they are executed; (iii) the supervisory systems runtime environment can dynamically adapt to variations in the Quality of Services (QoS) offered by the communication infrastructure, adjusting their graphic displays by comparing required and offered QoS. Two computational tools are proposed and developed in this work: (i) the first one supports the development of supervisory systems and allows, from an object-oriented model of the application, an automatic code generation - in Java language - of the supervision application; (ii) the second one is responsible for the online adaptation of messages and data communication among the projected supervision applications and other control and supervisory systems. The proposed concepts are validated through three case studies described in the present dissertation.

Abstract:
The city with its urban density, infrastructure, and cultural, social and educational opportunities can be a desirable place to live for all - regardless of age, income or background. The city of today has changed considerably from the city of the 19th century. Neither is it the city of the future. However, it has great potential to anticipate to the challenges we will face in the future. It is a place that constantly changes. It is a living organism! This constant change is a challenge for architects to develop concepts and design-solutions that can react to shifting uses, zoning requirements, and dweller habits. The constant alteration of lifestyle, residential and commercial use, as well as job-related needs demands a high flexibity and adaptability in architecture and urban planning. Today's life is fast and unpredictable. Other contemporary issues such as sustainabilty or climate change are becoming key issues of today's discussion - in society, in the media and in world policy. Architects - responsible for our built environment - have to find innovative solutions to such ever-changing problems within their profession - within architecture. How can a concept, project or building be designed or constructed to anticipate those future needs, and what are the limits? To explore these questions and many more that followed I chose a site in midtown Washington DC. My thesis project includes 23 townhouses with partial retail, incorporated along an alley in the interior of a city block. The new development is integrated into the existing structure.

Abstract:
Human being continuously has to adapt to modifications of environmental constraints, particularly to preserve balance efficiently. To achieve this aim, the central nervous system permanently estimates the relevance of sensory infonnation (mainly visual, vestibular and somatosensory infonnation). The way, in which infonnation from sens ory inputs are integrated, selected and/or weighted according to their reliability, requires to be cleared up. More particularly, we wished to investigate the singular character of proprioceptive integration: the various somatensory receptors are located on the whole postural chain and indicate modifications at the muscular or articular level. The first objective consisted in understanding how sens ory integration mechanisms can be adapted, during proprioceptive disturbances of postural control, evoked by muscle-tendon vibration. Experimental results showed that to experience postural consequences of this kind of perturbation and/or to be able to perceive more accurately the characteristics of the destabilization, when sens ory environment is enhanced, seemed to be necessary factors in order that adaptation takes place. From these observations, the impact of postural biofeedback devices during proprioceptive disturbances was studied in order to investigate the flexibility of the sensory integration mechanisms. An audio stereophonic biofeedback device stabilized vibratory evoked responses in healthy subjects, but only in long lasting latencies. Ln the same way, a visual biofeedback device, indicating the body geometry in a monocular head-mounted display, was developed in order to improve the postural orientation deficits in parkinsonian patients

Currently in Brazil, it can be see that the housing availability is not keeping up with population growth, and at that point, João Pessoa (Paraíba state, Brazil) is no different. As a solution to reduce the cost for housing and increase the number of buildings, their quality was sacrifice, by reducing the interior space, causing a distortion of the concept of minimal home, which gave users a major dissatisfaction factors: the lack of space, especially when it comes to social housing. In the search for solutions to this problem, spatial flexibility and adaptability comes as a way to provide the user a better quality of domestic space, more dynamic, so that housing can evolve and adapt to a diverse number of situations. Several development projects encouraging initiatives following this line of thought emerged around the world, among them the Solar Decathlon Europe, an international university competition that challenges collegiate teams to design, build and operate efficient prototype homes, with minimum dimensions and present strategies that overcome the space limitations. Therefore, this research aims the analysis of the application of flexibility and adaptability in architecture and highlight some guidelines of these aspects that can improve the interior’s quality of social housing, from Solar Decathlon Europe’s examples. For that presented a practical example of application in a housing typology of social interest in Joao Pessoa: the Gervásio Maia housing complex, built through a partnership between the Municipality of João Pessoa and the Federal Government, recognized in 2008 as a of the top ten housing projects in Brazil, but indicated as a bad example of architectural design reference for housing units in 2009. In this applied research, the methodological process adopted sought to conduct a thematic analysis of the collected material, in order to establish a relation between the collected data and what was intend to learn from the analysis. As expected result, it is believe to be leave a collaboration in the search for improvement of existing architectural problems in Social Interest Housing in Paraíba, using projective strategies more flexible and adaptable in particular to buildings already built.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This series of projects aims to explore the potential role of strategic flexibility in cognitive aging, and whether this construct can serve as an effective mechanistic proxy for cognitive reserve. Study 1 introduces the task designed for this series, based on stimuli from a classic test of fluid reasoning and formatted as a task-switching paradigm to explore strategic characteristics in a structured way. This study suggests that such a task is subject to age-related effects. Study 2 introduces a redesigned version of this task, matching it more closely to existing paradigms of task-switching, and explores how covariates interact with measured performance. Study 3 draws upon an existing sample of extensive neuropsychological and neuroimaging data, and aims to describe the associations among this set of data and measures of strategic flexibility. Results overall indicate that age negatively affects strategic flexibility, but cognitive reserve may mitigate this impairment.

Abstract:
Theory and research on emotion regulation have shifted from an emphasis on adaptiveness of specific regulatory strategies to regulatory flexibility according situational demands. Using the process model of flexible regulation (Bonanno & Burton, 2013), this dissertation reports two studies designed to investigate questions related to regulatory repertoire and responsiveness to feedback (two central components underpinning regulatory flexibility), respectively. In Study 1, participants undertook the Expressive Flexibility Task (EF Task), in which they were instructed to up- and down-regulate their emotional facial expressions, and the Affective Flexibility Task (AF Task), in which they were instructed to up- and down-regulate their subjective feelings. The results showed that the ability to enhance emotional expression, as rated by untrained observers, and the ability to enhance subjective feeling, as measured by facial electromyography (EMG), were moderately correlated, so were the abilities to suppress emotional expression and subjective feeling, suggesting regulation in distinct response systems are separable but also reflect a broader, unified capacity. In Study 2, extra trials (2nd phase) were added to examine the effect of practice and feedback instruction on expressive and affective regulatory abilities. Half of the participants were given predetermined negative feedback about their performance of the EF and AF Tasks and asked to try harder in the 2nd phase of the tasks (feedback group), and the other half were instructed to wait before proceeding to the 2nd task phases (control group). The two groups demonstrated comparable improvement in the ability to further enhance subjective feeling in the 2nd phase of the tasks, as measured by facial EMG. The feedback group also reported more or less emotion in accordance to the regulatory instructions in the 2nd task phases. Furthermore, both the abilities to further enhance and suppress subjective feeling as measured by facial EMG were negatively correlated with depressive symptoms and general distress, regardless of group status. The findings were discussed within the regulatory flexibility framework. Methodological limitations of the study and direction for future research were also discussed.

Abstract:
The current study investigates whether the ability to enhance and suppress emotional facial expressions display cross-sectional associations with feelings of loneliness among spousal bereaved individuals 1.5 to 3 years after a loss. We compare bereaved individuals to a demographically similar married control group to examine whether the relationship between loneliness and emotional expression regulation is moderated by grief after controlling for the effects of relationship satisfaction and symptoms of PTSD/depression. We evaluate three dimensions of loneliness: emotional loneliness, social loneliness, and collective loneliness.

Facing the challenges of rapid technology advantage and transformational change. Organizational change has become an necessary strategy. As company change, human’s change are more precarious. This study aims to explore the relationships between human resource management flexibility, organizational innovation and organizational adaptability. We proposed a conceptual model hypothesizing that flexibility of human resource practices helps to increase flexibility of employee’s skills and behaviors. And thus, it positively affect organizational innovation and adaptability. Moreover, coordination flexibility of employee’s skills and behaviors plays a moderating role in the relationships. In this research, the sample population base on the Taiwan Top 2000 enterprises that released by CommonWealth Magazine in 2019. Finally we obtained an effective sample of 45 enterprises. Then analyzed our data with SPSS 22.0 statistic software. The research results are as follows: 1. Practices flexibility positively affect resources flexibility. 2. Resources flexibility positively affect organizational innovation and adaptability. 3. Coordination flexibility has no positively moderating effect on the relationship of resources flexibility to organizational innovation and adaptability. Enterprises should be committed to adopting the strategy of human resources management flexibility to strengthen organizational innovation and adaptability. And it also increase overall performance. Furthermore, recruiting and developing employees with flexible skills and behaviors make enterprises more competitive in the industry.

White, Zoe Louise. "Self-concealment, Psychological Flexibility, and Severity of Eating Disorders." Thesis, 2018. https://doi.org/10.7916/D8H14JWT.

Full text
Abstract:
The primary aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between psychological flexibility, self-concealment, and eating disorder severity. This study also sought to explore the relationship between these variables in a clinical sample. Existing literature has demonstrated that diminished psychological flexibility is likely to play a key role in eating pathology. Additionally, self-concealment has been found to be a common and treatment-interfering aspect of the clinical presentation of eating-disordered individuals. Preliminary evidence has been found linking these variables to severity of eating-disorder pathology. However, this relationship needs further clarification to understand fully the implications for treatment and relapse prevention, for these often treatment-resistant disorders. Participants were 182 respondents to an online survey including demographic information, the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (EDE-Q), the Acceptance and Action Questionnaire (AAQ-16), and the Self-Concealment Scale (SCS). Data were collected via Qualtrics software and analyzed in SPSS using Hayes PROCESS models. Findings included the following. Among a sample of eating-disordered individuals, the less (more diminished) psychological flexibility they reported, the more severe the reported eating-disorder symptoms; in other words, an inverse relationship was found. Additionally, the greater self-concealment participants reported, the more severe were their reported eating-disorder symptoms. These findings held up for overall severity of reported symptoms and also for subscale severity for eating restraint, eating concern, weight concern, and shape concern. Additionally, a moderated mediation model found that greater self-concealment, diminished psychological flexibility, and no treatment were all significantly related to increases in eating-disorder severity. This model also found a significant interaction between psychological flexibility and eating-disorder severity moderated by treatment condition. That is, the extent to which someone self-conceals helps to explain the relationship between psychological flexibility and severity. Furthermore, whether a patient has been in treatment significantly relates to the relationship between psychological flexibility and severity. Implications of these findings are discussed, including a focus on emotion-regulation models of eating disorders and the rationale for adopting a transdiagnostic understanding of eating pathology. Recommendations are proposed for clinical practice, including expanding the utilization of therapies such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) for eating disorders, which specifically target psychological flexibility and self-concealment in the hope of preventing future relapse.
