Abstract:
Introduction. Changes in the industry impact the stable condition of working in a company or industry and it is not something that can be guaranteed again in the future. The proof is that there are many phenomena of job transfers or even layoffs in various business sectors due to COVID-19 pandemic. Many studies have examined the importance of developing career adaptability skills to face the changing needs of the industry. However, studies that discuss the mechanism of forming career adaptability skills involving important antecedent factors such as teaching quality, social support, and career self-efficacy of polytechnic students are still limited. Therefore, this study aims at examining the effect of teaching quality, social support, and career self-efficacy factors on the career adaptability skills of polytechnic students. Materials and Methods. This study involved 265 students at a polytechnic in East Kalimantan, Indonesia. The students expressed their perceptions of the quality of their internship learning, social support, and career selfefficacy – data analysis used Structural Equation Modeling by Amos 18 software. Results. This study reveals that teaching quality and social support does not have a direct effect on career adaptability skills. Meanwhile, career self-efficacy has a direct effect on the career adaptability skills of polytechnic students. Other findings, teaching quality and social support have a direct effect on the career self-efficacy of polytechnic students. Finally, career self-efficacy mediates the effect of teaching quality and social support on the career adaptability skills of polytechnic students. Discussion and Conclusion. This study provides important implications for the development of learning in vocational education so that students have a good mastery of career adaptability skills. Vocational education practitioners must design a vocational teaching model that combines vocational teaching, social support, and career self-efficacy to form mastery of career adaptability skills for pop-polytechnic students. In addition, the development of a vocational education curriculum needs to include mastery of career adaptability skills for students in vocational education, be it vocational high schools or polytechnics. In further research, it is necessary to develop a vocational learning model that aims to inculcate career adaptability skills for vocational students.

Abstract:
PurposeThe study aims to gain a deeper understanding of what leadership skills are important for leaders in gaining adaptability in a hierarchical organization along with antecedent factors that influence the potential development of these skill sets.Design/methodology/approachA qualitative study was conducted by interviewing fifteen high-level military officers (Brigadiers and Colonels). Data were analyzed according to the grounded theory method and a theoretical model was generated.FindingsA core variable was identified in the data analysis, the leader's use of organizational smooth power, using structural, emotional and relational smoothness, to gain organizational adaptability. The leader's professional background, experience and the organizational environment characteristics respectively interact as antecedent variables shaping the leader's contextual appraisal in order to implement smooth power. Further research suggestions are pointed out and practical and ethical implications are included.Research limitations/implicationsThe study was completed in a specific context, a higher-level military staff, which makes it context specific. We hypothesize that similar behaviors may be found in other organizations but further research should be conducted to test this. The sample size is relatively small due to the chosen qualitative research method.Practical implicationsPractical considerations should be given to ethical and moral reflection within leadership training for ongoing use in leadership praxis, such as implementation and ongoing reflection of ethical leadership (Treviño et al., 2000; Treviño et al., 2003). Other practical impacts of this research may be for selection and retention efforts of high-level military staff workers. The model may also be useful for education purposes in order to increase awareness and abilities of smooth power concepts in an attempt to increase adaptability in military leadership. It may increase their awareness of skills rendered as necessary for collaborative efforts in multinational staff environments.Originality/valueThe research contribution is the detailed descriptions of the ways high-level leaders use organizational smooth power in order gain organizational adaptability.

Structural, economic, and climate changes human activity and the growing complexity of the business environment significantly affect the forestry sector, which faces the need to adapt to the dynamically changing environment by strategic development of appropriate resources and skills. In this paper, we attempted to take on the managerial lens of dynamic capabilities, i.e., the abilities to adapt to the changes in the business environment to analyze whether the forestry sector is able to strategically develop resources that influence adaptability. We have attempted to demonstrate how the resources of the forest enterprises affect the adaptability described by the dynamic capabilities construct. Bearing in mind the importance of State Forests, we collected data from 129 forest districts in Poland and applied the ordered logistic regression to identify models that show the impact of specific categories of resources onto the forestry sector adaptability, described by the construct of dynamic capabilities. The results suggest that the forest districts strategically investing in technological, as well as human resources and skills, have higher chances of maintaining and developing the ability to adapt to the constantly changing economic environment. At the same time, our findings show that financial, reputational, and marketable resources and skills have no impact on the adaptability of the State Forests National Forest Holding.

Abstract:
Purpose With the ageing global population the demand for nursing jobs and the requirements for complex care provision are increasing. In consequence, nursing professionals need to be ready to adapt, obtain variety of skills and engage in career self-management. The purpose of this paper is to investigate individual, micro-level, resources and behaviors that can facilitate matching processes between nursing professionals and their jobs. Design/methodology/approach A survey-based study was conducted among 314 part-time and full-time nursing professionals in Hungary. Findings Consistent with the career construction theory, this study offers evidence on career adaptability as a self-regulatory resource that might stimulate nurses’ adaptation outcomes. Specifically, it demonstrates positive relationships between adaptive readiness (proactive personality and conscientiousness), career adaptability, adapting behaviors (career planning and proactive skill development) and adaptation outcomes (employability and in-role performance). Research limitations/implications The cross-sectional design limits causal inference. Relatively small sample of full-time professionals for whom supervisory-ratings were obtained yields the need of further replication. Practical implications Stimulating development of nurses’ career adaptability, career planning, and proactive skill development can contribute to sustainable career management. It can facilitate the alignment of nurses to performance requirements of their current jobs, preventing individual person-job mismatch. Originality/value Zooming into the context of nursing professionals in Hungary, the study elucidates the understudied link between adaptivity and adapting responses and answers the call for more research that employs other-ratings of adaptation outcomes. It demonstrates the value of career adaptability resources for nurses’ employability and in-role performance.

Abstract:
The relationship between emotional intelligence (EI) and academic achievement has received a lot of attention in the school environment. The objective of this study is to identify which EI components are more related to linguistic competences in primary education. One hundred eighty students between 8 and 11 years of age participated in the study. We administered the BarOn EI Inventory, the intellectual skills test (EFAI) to determine the intellectual abilities, and a test of basic linguistic competences. The results showed that the EI factors of adaptability and interpersonal had the strongest impact on linguistic competences. Specifically, adaptability was the EI component more related to reading comprehension, explaining 13.2% of the reading score’s variance, while adaptability and stress management were the best predictors of writing skills, accounting for 15.4% of the variance of the writing score. These results point to the need to consider emotional competences to help students reach academic success and personal well-being.

Abstract An important concern for study program design is the employability of candidates. This paper seeks to establish what competence is sought by employers of IT candidates, based on interviews with representatives from 120 Norwegian companies working with IT. The results have been analysed to identify what the IT industry expect from university candidates. For the whole sample, the most frequently mentioned characteristics were programming knowledge, adaptability, the willingness to learn new things and problem-solving skills. If we only consider the companies that develop software, the most frequently mentioned characteristics were programming knowledge, the willingness to learn new things and communication skills. The interviewees were also asked which characteristics that they were missing from university candidates. The most mentioned shortcomings were practical experience with coding and maintenance, adaptability and communication skills when relating to clients. Towards the end of the article, it is discussed how the university can improve in these respects. The industry’s focus on adaptability and the willingness to learn new things indicates that the time when it was considered important that graduates knew how to use specific tools is over. The IT-industry has come to realize that they cannot escape a future of frequent changes to tools and methods.

Abstract:
Currently, the world educational community is actively discussing the problem of developing students’ universal competencies, flexible skills, or «soft skills». A global trend is indicated that requires young specialists to master the skills included in the definition of «soft skills», since a set of such skills and abilities allows you to effectively approach tasks and quickly adapt to changing environmental conditions. The application of these skills in everyday life is also actualized, which can help a person to be adaptive in changing conditions. Indicating the high demand and relevance of this issue, scientists note serious difficulties in using various approaches associated with the discrepancy and different use of the definitions of «soft skills». The purpose of this study was an attempt to systematize the concepts used and develop the author’s list of «soft skills», including: «creativity», «cooperation», «persuasion», «emotional intelligence», «adaptability».

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to apply multicriteria decision-making (MCDM) methods, namely, analytic hierarchy process (AHP) for selecting the best pedagogical method able to develop the soft skills required by the job market with respect to the preference level assigned by employers to each soft skill. The evaluated pedagogical strategies are experiential pedagogy (EP), project-based learning (PjBL), problem-based learning (PBL), serious games (SG), Harvard case method (HCM), and lecture course (LC). Ten criteria (soft skills) were identified from a previous quantitative content analysis of engineering job ads in Morocco in order to identify the extent to which soft skills are required by employers. These skills include communication, efficiency, adaptability, decision-making, innovation, problem resolution, team working, project management, professional responsibility, and using technology in engineering practice. After pairwise comparisons between all the evaluated alternatives with respect to each criterion, results show that experiential pedagogy is the optimal solution to develop the soft skills demanded by the job market.

Abstract:
Soft skills such as adaptability, innovation, creativity, interdisciplinary collaboration, leadership and resilience are transferable skills expected of university graduates, to find sustainable solutions to the challenging and complex problems faced by the society in the 21st century. This necessitates the need to continuously evaluate the effectiveness of programs of study that are not contributing greatly to student’s future career success and to the economy in general. A qualitative phenomenological approach was used to explore the soft skills Maldivian college students consider important, as they complete higher education and prepare for the 21st century world of life, work, and citizenship. A purposive sample of 18 students from three different colleges in Male’ was interviewed using a semi-structured interview guide. The findings revealed that college graduates valued essential soft skills such as adaptability, communication, collaboration, and problem solving skills, and realised they needed these skills to be competent and successful in the world of work. They also identified weaknesses in college curriculum and pedagogy which hindered them from learning and practicing these skills. Significantly concerning was that these students did not have the opportunities to consider innovation, creativity, and cultural citizenship as important skills they could gain during their tertiary education experience. This indicates that regular revisions to curricular should be made to address and accommodate graduates’ deficiencies in soft skills which are transferrable to the workplace. Students also should be given applied projects, case studies, and experiential learning to narrow the soft skills gaps.

Abstract:
Employers of chemistry graduates are seeking a range of transferable skills from prospective employees, and academics are increasingly seeking to build employability skill development opportunities into the undergraduate curriculum. However, research suggests that undergraduates do not recognise or value such skill development without prompting. This recognition is essential if graduates are to be able to articulate their skills in the employment process. This study involves research amongst almost 1000 undergraduates studying chemistry at two institutions, using open-ended questions to collect qualitative data. The extent to which students recognised course-related skills development and understood the skills that employers are looking for was investigated, as was their desire to develop additional skills. Similarities and differences in student views between institutions are discussed, as well as trends across year levels and by gender. Results indicate that undergraduates studying chemistry are most likely to value and recognise development of some key skills sought by employers (teamwork, communication, thinking/problem solving, organisation/time management and laboratory/practical skills), but are very unlikely to value or recognise others (numeracy, independent learning, commercial awareness, interpersonal, research, computer/IT, creativity/innovation, flexibility/adaptability and initiative). Opportunities to develop the latter skills and recognition of the value of doing so will require improved communication with students and/or provision of new experiences within the curriculum.

Abstract:
The majority of current military missions require collaboration among multiple nations. For example, the military presence established in Bosnia-Herzegovina (B-H) following the end of their civil war included participants from over 38 nations. U.S. Army forces were assigned to the headquarters element and to Multinational Division North (MND(N)). We reviewed processes of the U.S. Army force commanding MND(N) to assess the degree to which army forces were being prepared to adapt their warfighting skills to conduct multinational peacekeeping missions. Barriers to adaptability were identified in their approach to deployment training and the organization of the military headquarters. U.S. forces were not trained to work with multinational partners and multinational staff members were not integrated into staff planning processes. Methods to improve team adaptability and a framework for considering the relationship among cultural, social cognitive processes and multinational teamwork are proposed.

Abstract:
In the changing future of work, employers will need new approaches to workforce-skilling as organisations become increasingly ‘age-diverse’, and technology changes jobs and skills at an accelerated pace. Driving meaningful skill development will be crucial to channel the diversity of a multi-generational workforce. Agility and adaptability, not age, will determine the extent to which employees contribute and thrive. By leveraging new digital and online learning models, enterprises can build critical skills flexibly across a multi-generational workforce while paving the way for continuous skill development. Digital learning can help organisations identify skills gaps for employees across the age spectrum personalise programs to narrow these gaps while tracking and measuring progress towards larger learning goals that meet organisational objectives. This article examines skilling trends that are enabling organisations to inclusively build a resilient workforce by maximising the potential of multi-generational talent and empowering employees across the age spectrum to contribute cohesively and drive business impact.

Abstract:
PurposeVery little research has examined how adaptivity, adaptability resources, adapting responses and adaptation results are interlinked with each other. The current research aims to investigate whether career adaptability influences job outcomes via job content plateau. Taking career construction theory (Savickas, 2005) as a base, the research model of this study posited that employee's favorable job outcomes, i.e. job satisfaction and performance depend upon their psychosocial meta-capacities (career adaptability) and job content plateau. Further, the study is the first to examine the moderating role of proactivity among career adaptability, job content plateau and job outcomes relationship.Design/methodology/approachIt is a two-wave longitudinal study, quantitative in nature and has collected data from 357 faculty members of Indian universities. The hypotheses have been empirically tested through the structural equation modeling technique.FindingsThe moderated mediation model was supported, and as predicted, (1) career adaptability was positively related to job outcomes and (2) the mediated relationship between career adaptability and job outcomes via content plateau was stronger for individuals with high levels of proactivity.Practical implicationsThe study encourages career management practitioners and counselors to integrate proactive behaviors and career adaptability into counseling techniques to equip clients with necessary skills and deal with unfavorable job experiences, thereby engendering favorable job outcomes.Originality/valueThe current study is the first to test the intervening effect of proactivity in career adaptability and job outcomes relationships via job content plateau.

Abstract:
Abstract At least since Aristotle, practical skill has been thought to be a possible model for individual ethical development and action. Jonathan Birch’s ambitious proposal is that practical skill and tool-use might also have played a central role in the historical emergence and evolution of our very capacity for normative guidance. Birch argues that human acquisition of motor skill, for example in making and using tools, involves formation of an internal standard of correct performance, which serves as a basis for normative guidance in skilled thought and action, and in the social transfer of skills. I suggest that evaluativemodeling, guidance, and learning play a more basic role in motor skill than standards of correctness as such-indeed, such standards can provide effective normative guidance thanks to being embedded within evaluative modeling and guidance. This picture better fits the evidence Birch cites of the flexibility, adaptability, and creativity of skills, and can support a generalized version of Birch’s ‘skill hypothesis’.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the mediating role of the attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help between career adaptability and active job search behavior of older workers in South Korea. Design/methodology/approach From a review of related literature, six study hypotheses were developed to test the structural relationship between the variables. Findings This study identified that attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help mediated the relationship between career adaptability, the value of career coaching and active job search behavior. Practical implications A successful job search requires the use of substantial self-control and self-regulation skills, and there can be effective training in all these skills of self-disciplining when older workers can find a high level of value from career coaching programs. Originality/value Despite the growing popularity of career support programs, the quality of career coaching programs and participants’ perceived value toward them are critical to illicit positive outcomes of such programs. This study supports this premise by revealing a structural relationship between career adaptability, perceived value of career coaching, attitudes toward seeking professional career help and active job search behavior.

Abstract:
Students’ mental health has always been a hot topic in colleges and universities. How to make students integrate into the collective and society faster and better is also one of the most difficult problems for educators. Students want to improve their competitiveness; not only must they have superb professional skills, but at the same time, they must have good social adaptability. Only in this way can they quickly complete their identity change and quickly adapt to workplace life. Students’ social adaptability is not innate, but gradually formed through long-term positive mental health education. Considering the relationship between psychoeducation and social adaptability, in general, a good psychoeducation system is conducive to the development of students’ social adaptability, and they promote each other. Good mental health education is multifaceted and sustainable for the development of social adaptability. In this context, it is necessary to formulate a targeted positive mental health education plan according to the actual situation of students, so as to comprehensively improve the comprehensive quality of students in this way.
