Abstract:
The visual system adapts to the environment, changing neural responses to aid efficiency and improve perception. However, these changes sometimes lead to negative consequences: If neurons at later processing stages fail to account for adaptation at earlier stages, perceptual errors result, including common visual illusions. These negative effects of adaptation have been termed the coding catastrophe. How does the visual system resolve them? We hypothesized that higher-level adaptation can correct errors arising from the coding catastrophe by changing what appears normal, a common form of adapt

Psychologist Harry Helson (1898–1977) developed Adaptation-Level (AL) theory during the 1930s to the 1970s, while economics was being refined through ordinalism and expected utility theory. This essay accounts for the process of transmission of AL theory from psychophysics to behavioral psychology and eventually economics. It explains how the concept of adaptation reflectance, originally intended to explain color vision, developed into an experimental approach that caught the attention of both psychologists and economists working on welfare analysis and behavioral research. Abstract:
AbstractChildren and adolescents experience rapid changes due to development and growth processes, thereby necessitating adaptation and flexibility. In addition, young people also often face environmental crises or traumas, human-made catastrophes, or individual (chronic illness) or family (parent divorce, death of a loved one) crises. In the past, to facilitate young people’s adaptation to change, major aims of parents, teachers, and therapists focused on protecting children and adolescents from harm and helping them grow up in a secure environment. Over time, modern life and the influence of the positive psychology orientation have led to a shift in those aims, which now focus more on helping young people feel happy, flourish, and use their own strengths. A key element in making this process of adaptation to change successful is resilience. This chapter deals with the effects of changes, crises, and traumas on children and adolescents, while focusing on the importance of resilience at the individual, family, and environmental levels. This approach directs adaptation to change efforts towards the present rather than towards the past, thereby meeting the important need of treating children and adolescents who have experienced crisis and trauma by imparting them with skills for better coping today in their major natural environments.

AbstractThis chapter examines the intersections of positive psychology and religion/spirituality in the context of disasters. We review the salience of religious/spiritual (R/S) processes in coping with mass trauma and summarize several strength-based disaster recovery theories that contribute to a holistic understanding of survivors’ and communities’ adaptation processes. Building on this review, we propose and describe the systemic model of Disaster Spiritual Fortitude and Resilience (DSFR). This is the first spiritually integrated disaster recovery model that (a) captures both strengths and vulnerabilities across holistic domains of human experience while also (b) considering across-time interactional effects between the individual and their multilevel socioecological context (at interpersonal, community, and larger societal levels). Implications for practitioners and community leaders working in disaster and humanitarian contexts are provided, along with recommendations for guiding science, practice, and policymaking.

Abstract:
This chapter posits that responses to collective victimization that are maladaptive at the intergroup level may be adaptive at the intragroup level. Specifically, the endorsement of conspiracy theories could be seen as an adaptive response in societies that were historically frequently victimized and at the receiving end of actual conspiracies. In such contexts, hypervigilance and mistrust may prevent future victimization. To test this role of history and macro influences more generally on collective victimhood and endorsement of conspiracy theories, the authors use data from nationally representative samples in countries that are at the center or periphery of the global world order (United Kingdom and Spain, Ukraine and Poland, respectively). In peripheral countries with a history of collective victimization, perceived collective victimhood was associated with endorsement of conspiracy theories and mistrust of the government. These relationships were not significant in central countries with a history of imperialism and domination.

Abstract:
This work is devoted to some aspects of the psychological adaptation of students of a medical university to the distance learning process during a pandemic of a new coronavirus infection. The presented research is relevant for several reasons, the leading of which are: the ongoing reform of the education and health care systems in our country – both of which affect students of medical universities and various aspects of their educational activities, including their psychological adaptation to it; as well as the global pandemic of the new coronavirus infection COVID-19 that emerged in 2020, as a result of which, almost all scientists at various levels around the world were forced to switch to distance learning. The purpose of this work was to identify and analyze some elements of psychological adaptation of students directly to the distance learning process. The objects of the study were 200 men and women, students of the medical faculty. A certain interest in the study is also due to the fact that the same students were involved in it for 2 semesters (spring and autumn) of 2020. In order to track the development of their possible adaptation mechanisms to distance learning, the level of anxiety, both personal and situational, was determined; identified various depressive states; determined the reasons for the main fears and concerns, both directly to the period of an unfavorable epidemiological situation, and to the distance learning process itself. The main points of psychological adaptation were identified, with the identification of factors contributing to them. This work is of certain interest for all higher school teachers involved in the educational process with students, as well as for psychologists and all kinds of researchers dealing with the psychological health of students.

Abstract:
Abstract The biologist Richard Lewontin (2000) characterized living organisms as electromechanical devices made up of articulated physical parts that, for purely thermodynamic reasons, eventually wear out and fail to function. Lithgow and Kirkwood (1996), in their review of research on the biology of aging, observed that it is “disadvantageous to increase maintenance beyond a level sufficient to keep the organism in good shape through its natural life expectancy in the wild, because the extra cost will eat into resources that in terms of natural selection are better used to boost other functions that will enhance fitness” (p. 80). We are only now beginning to understand how the brain integrates the regulatory and restorative forces of the body to foster health and adaptation to environmental challenge. This chapter examines these forces as they relate to psychology and health.

Abstract:
Health psychology is concerned with understanding human behaviour in the context of health, illness, and health care. It is the study of the psychological factors, which determine how people stay healthy, why they become ill, and how they respond to illness and health care. Health psychology has emerged as a separate discipline in the past 30 years and there are many reasons for its rapid development. An important background factor is the major change in the nature of health problems in industrialized societies during the twentieth century. Chronic illnesses such as heart disease and cancer have become the leading causes of death, and behavioural factors such as smoking, diet, and stress are now recognized as playing a major role in the aetiology and progression of these diseases. The provision of health care has grown enormously and there is an increased awareness of good communication as a central ingredient of medical care and of the importance of such factors as patient satisfaction and quality of life as key outcomes in evaluating the efficacy of medical interventions. Although health psychology has developed over a similar time period to general hospital/liaison psychiatry and shares some common areas of interest, there are some clear differences between these two fields. Liaison psychiatry has a primary focus on hospital patients, particularly those experiencing psychological difficulties in the face of a physical health problem. In contrast, health psychology has a much broader focus on both healthy and ill populations and on the psychological processes that influence their level of health or their degree of adaptation to disease. Whereas health psychology has been mainly concerned with developing explanations based on theory, for health-related and illness-related behaviour, liaison psychiatry has concentrated on the diagnosis and treatment of either unexplained symptoms or psychiatric disorders occurring in people with medical conditions (see the other chapters in Part 5 of this volume). In this chapter we provide an overview of the main themes and areas in health psychology. Four broad areas of behaviour will be reviewed, namely behavioural factors influencing health, symptom and illness behaviour, health care behaviour, and treatment behaviour. Inevitably such an overview is selective and the interested reader should seek out a more comprehensive introductory text or more in-depth accounts of specific areas.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the study of the phenomenon of psychological adaptation of patients to a new coronavirus infection COVID-19, with chronic diseases of a therapeutic and surgical profile during the ongoing pandemic. The subject of the presented work is very relevant in view of the fact that the incidence of a new coronavirus infection COVID-19 is currently continuing throughout the world. For now, scientists, doctors, and researchers can only hope for a speedy end to the pandemic. Nevertheless, some authors are already talking about the imminent start of the sixth «wave» of the protracted illness. It is known that for better treatment, patients do not need only medical or surgical therapy – they often also need psychological help and support. An attempt to analyze the psychological adaptation of patients in a pandemic was the goal of the presented work. The objects of the study were 200 patients of the Voronezh Regional Clinical Hospital №1, divided into 2 groups, depending on the profile: therapeutic and surgical. Subsequently, there was a division into subgroups, depending on whether the patient «transferred» a new virus or not, according to the respondent himself. A special questionnaire developed by the authors included questions about gender, age, COVID-19 disease, and the presence of chronic diseases requiring hospitalization was studied. A feature of the study was the determination of IgG to COVID-19 in patients. Subsequently, the general attitude of respondents to COVID-19 was studied, the level of fear was determined at different «waves» of the pandemic, and an attempt was made to identify depressive states in the subjects. The data obtained are of great interest not only to psychologists and psychotherapists, but also to practicing doctors of various profiles.

Human factors and ergonomics (HFE) is a transdisciplinary area that integrates theories and methods from disciplines such as psychology, anatomy and physiology, and organization management. The different elements of HFE provide the basis for the effective design of a safe clinical process and adaptation of the human activity to the environment. Physical HFE focuses primarily on the physical characteristics and activities of the person undertaking an activity and includes the design of the workplace layout, the work-related musculoskeletal disorder, and the impact of environmental factors. Cognitive HFE focuses primarily on cognitive characteristics and activities of the person, for instance decision-making. Organizational HFE focuses on psychosocial characteristics of people and organization-level structures, policies, and processes. The Systems Engineering Initiative for Patient Safety (SEIPS) model provides a construct that integrates the different parts of HFE and can be applied to daily clinical practice.
