Full textChanging schools at 41 or 4- is a critical, often traumatic event in a pupil ‘s career. ' this' richly'. Detailed and readable study looks at the transitional stage from the pupil's point of view : it illustrates their perspectives of the transfer their anxieties and their experiences. This thesis is the result of a research, in which children transferring from a primary school to a secondary schoo] were observed over a period of nine months. The author reveals various ways in which pupils adjust to a large, more complex school organisation, to new forms of discipline, and new demands in school work. She emphasises the significance of preadolescent culture during this period, and identifies an important area of interplay between school culture and sub-culture

Full textThe rift observed between students of SEGPA and those of other classes has led us to believe that a great dealay discrimination can be found between these two groups of pupils. EPS is often used as a mean of integration. Yet some studies indicate that it is not enough to suply mix these students to establish better relations between them. This study has three objectives. The first is to investigate the affinity discrimination that exists between students in SEGPA and students in other classes. The second is to determine the influence of the type of competition chosen (individual/intergroup in crossed categorization) on these discriminations during a series of hip-hop dance common courses. The third objective is to study the effect of sports practised in common (hip-hop, basket-ball, relay race) on such discriminations. 294 students in the seventh grade (147 normal cycle and 147 SEGPA) were given sociometric tests at the beginning and the end of the experiment which took place over eight sessions. Results show that from the first test normal cycle students gave higher sociometric marks to their own group than to the SEGPA students. By contrast, pupils in SEGPA showed less discrimination between the two groups. Moreover the common practice of hip-hop dancing altered the orientation of interpersonal affinities between groups. This transformation is linked to the performance for boys in individual competition and linked to crossed categorization in intergroup competition for both, boys and girls. Under the latter circonstances, only hip-hop and basket-ball resulted in a change of intergroup relations. The attractions of the normal cycle students towards the SEGPA were primarily related to individual performance in basket-ball and, in hip-hop, to functional proximity

Full textThe popularity of selective special school projects prejudices equality of opportunity in Quebecer secondary schools. This study focuses on a non-selective special school project that offers both homework supervision and guidance for all and the possibility of participating in extracurricular activities for every pupil who wishes to do so. The study aims to describe the difference in pupils’ perception of the efficiency of the project on homework guidance and supervision according to their characteristics (gender, secondary cycle and type of education) and their work habits (time spent daily on homework and where homework are done). This study uses secondary data from a previous collaborative study which had shown students to have a positive perception of the project’s efficiency (Larouche, Amboulé-Abath et Savard, 2016a). Data interrogated stems from a questionnaire answered by 596 secondary school pupils from special needs education and regular classes. Results show many differences in pupils’ perception of the efficiency of the project according mainly on their work habits, but also on gender, secondary cycle, and type of education. Pupils who have a most positive perception of the efficiency of the project are those who do their homework both at home and at school and those who spend at least 30 minutes daily on their homework. Data also show that girls have a more positive perception of the efficiency of the project than boys. The latter tend to perceive more the disadvantages of the project. Pupils form cycle one (junior) and those from cycle two (senior) have a different perception of the project’s efficiency. Pupils enrolled in special needs classes have a more negative perception of the efficiency of the project than their peers.
Virat, Mael. "Dimension affective de la relation enseignant-élève : effet sur l’adaptation psychosociale des adolescents (motivations, empathie, adaptation scolaire et violence) et rôle déterminant de l’amour compassionnel des enseignants." Thesis, Montpellier 3, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014MON30048/document.
Full textNumber of longitudinal studies in educational psychology have shown that affective teacher-student relationships (RAEE) is beneficial both at school (success, perseverance, behaviour, etc.) and outside (decrease in depression, anxiety, delinquency, etc.) (Fortin, Plante & Bradley, 2011). However, its determinants have been little studied and the role of teachers' affective commitment on RAEE has not been estimated. This thesis grounded on attachment theory (Bowlby, 1969) aims at filling this gap with the concept of compassionate love (Underwood, 2008).In France, where the subject has not been quantitatively studied yet, the RAEE is greatly controversial, even taboo. Could its effects be tested empirically? The three motivational systems theory (Favre & Favre, 1993) enables us to understand and measure the effect of RAEE on adolescents. After validating a French version of the compassionate love scale for students (Sprecher & Fehr, 2005) in a sample of teachers (N = 275), it appears to be predictive of the RAEE (STRS, Pianta, 2001). This thesis also validates a psychometric tool to assess the three motivational systems in a sample of middle school students (N = 145). Then, this tool has been completed by other instruments assessing psychological adjustment (empathy, school variables and violence) and completed by two samples (N = 113 middle school students and N = 104 students from special education units called SEGPA): RAEE promotes innovation motivation, empathy and school adjustment while protecting against addiction motivation, school indiscipline and violence. This argues for a relational approach in education, as promoted by care theorists, and for a positive educational psychology

is a broad literature that depicts the relationship between mothers’ and teachers’ autonomy support on students’ adjustment at school. Yet, the mechanisms underlying this link have received less attention. Grounded on the self-determination theory (SDT; Ryan & Deci, 2017), the present study aimed to address this gap in the literature by testing a model illustrating basic psychological needs satisfaction and their frustration as mediators in the association between autonomy support and school adjustment. The sample consisted of 271 Mauritian adolescent students (127 boys, 144 girls) in 10th and 11th grade (mean age of 15,5 years old) who responded to a questionnaire measuring their perceived relationships with their mother and teachers as well as their academic, social and emotional adjustment. Analyses relying on structural equation modeling showed that basic psychological needs satisfaction and frustration mediated the relationship between autonomy support and school adjustment. However, distinct patterns of mediation were observed from mothers and teachers. These results are presented and discussed based on SDT. The limitations and implications of the present study are also highlighted.

Full textThis PhD thesis focused on help taking place in class between lower secondary school students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and their teachers, in an inclusive education setting. Help was studied from the students’ (help seeking) and the teachers’ (help giving) perspectives. The participants were 11 lower secondary school students with ASD, 17 of their teachers and 14 parents. Students and their teachers were filmed both in resource and in general classrooms, and they were interviewed about help in the classroom. The students’ parents were interviewedabout their child’s academic background, and they completed the Vineland II scale. The analyses showed that lower secondary school students with ASD had mostly low levels of adaptive behavior and that there were no statistically significant relationships between the students’ adaptive behavior and their academic achievement or school career. In addition, the analyses revealed that almost all students with ASD sought help from their teachers in the classroom, and that they most frequently proceeded by formulating their requests out loud (thusinterrupting the teacher). About one third of the students’ requests for help consisted of the expression of a difficulty; they also requested, but to a lesser extent, instrumental help, help concerning the organization of their work, and confirmations. As for teachers, the results showed that they responded to most students’ requests, mainly by providing them generic type of help (i.e., positive or encouraging feedback on the student’s work, additional instructionsand/or explanations). The results are discussed with regard to the French literature on help in the classroom

Full textThe lack of work of students in secondary education is often pointed out as a major cause of failure despite the fact that they do work. . . Starting from this paradoxical statement in order to make the Lebanese students' schoolwork "efficient and successful" and also to build up a sociology of "the student's job", our objective is to try to give elements of answer originating from a research approach. From a survey dealing with 1137 pupils together with a series of interviews we tried to analyse and understand how the student views his work, what amount of time he devotes to it, what leisure he chooses for his free time, what mode and method of work he uses both to study and to ensure the necessary learning, what obstacles and difficulties he can meet, how he evaluates himself, how he defines the image of "the good pupil" so that nine types of figures of young Lebanese students can be drawn as regards their schoolwork

Full textAttending them. Social determinism cannot explain everything. Which part, if any, does the school play in the success of the students ? Many have already tried to understand the influence of the school, and the chronology of the survey of this sociological issue has been mentioned. After giving us a monography about it, the author applies a simplified form of Olivier Cousin's methodology to the results of eleven junior high schools of Limoges (87) at the written test of the + brevet ; in 1992,93,94 and 95. In order to evaluate their efficiency, he compares the achievement (the actual results compared to the expectations) to the equity (the tightening or widening of the gasps between the best students and the weaker ones). The most efficient school appears to be Franck jhs. The results are compared to the local educational policies. It can be noticed that efficiency is almost always linked to a strict and consensual policy regarding the obligation for the students to do their duty. A strict educative supervision is often set up. But such a step is hard to accept for students who have difficulties to endure the pressure exerted on them by the school. The efficiency of a school cannot thus be reduced to its results alone. Every jhs in the sample is classified according to three different types : those which privilege instruction, those which privilege education and those which illustrate the effort that has been consensually accepted. The ideal jhs, the "efficient one", would then be the one that would ensure educational achievement while giving a meaning to the children's studies

Full textIt is currently advised for to organise some activities in which students can analyse and criticise documents aiming at public understanding of science. Here, we document the use of such documents - in this case paper documents with images - in the classroom. Our perspective is not to envisage only their potential in terms of students' curiosity but to consider as well possible conceptual benefits. After having collected some elements of investigation about the state of affairs in this respect, in students and teachers in France, we designed and evaluated a teaching sequence, three successive years, each time with a standard group at grade 10 level. Organised with a view to minimising the perturbation of the standard teaching, this sequence comprises three sessions spread over the whole academic year. A special attention is given to the students' ability to organise a hierarchy among some problematic aspects of the documents, given the corresponding risks of misunderstandings. Another point of special attention is the tendency to reduce the meaning of the document or the activities that can be organised about it to standard aspects of a classic teaching. Beyond the positive changes that have been observed in these respects, some strong dues of a linkage between critical conceptual analysis and students' intellectual satisfaction suggest that this topic deserves further research

Full textThe importance of tradition in academic success for the daughters of north african immigrants and the fundamental role of schooling in current social and cultural changes make up the topic of this research. This thesis shows their specific way of integrating modern french society. The statistical survey has shown that girls' academic success is an observable fact at every level of the school system, especially for girls aged 11 to 16. They do much better in school than all other students-whatever their nationality. Most of them go farther in their studies than their classmates. When these girls are compared with other students from the same social class, they are less frequently oriented towards technical classes. Their upbring encourages this result. Since they are controled, watched and protected by their families, these girls turn to an environment where they feel freer-school. North african girls use the french school system as a means to escape from family constraints

Full textThis work is a longitudinal study of preadolescent and adolescent pupils' scholastic and vocational preferences and career options. The affective and motivational mechanisms and the cognitive processes of this evolution were studied in real time, using a clinical method of interviewes repeated each year for each subject of the sample population. A model was developped, both as pattern for the interviewes and decoding system for utterances. The vocational development is a progressive "mise en tension" between self assessment, professional representations and the self. Once identified the connections, and i mean by connections comparative reflexion, probabilistic reflexion and implicative reflexion dominated by two metadiscursive categories, "implicit theories of orientation" and metareflexion - they undergo content analysis. The vocational development is essentially affective and cognitive decentration. Vocational thought ranges from the syncretic to the operatory, from magic to probabilistic thought, from identification to objectivation. Various processes such as sublimating desire or rationalising mourning lead the subject to the project within a time perspective consistant and signposted and through the insertion in scholastic and social reality. Career orientation is considered here as a fundamental aspect of the adolescent's socialisation

Its relation to puipil's attainments is less effective than in the case of a technical devic allow the objectivation of the social reality of school failure. The project is a witness of differences, in the sense t educational logics have also an effect. The analysis of the social discourse is an effective starting point to the obser the democratisation process : the elitist secondary schools (or junior high-schools) are the best ones. The school project may be distinguished by the choice they made between reinforcing technological education, detecting educational diffcult modernisation or optional forms leading to a streaming process. The values which inform these projects can be organised in significant networks of different types : industrial, compensatory, modernising, elitist or conservatist ones. The study school balance according to the type of the project highilights the fact that pupil's achievements are greater, and they less, within the group of projects which reveals lesser implication with the reform objectives, than in the group of pro with a heightened implication level. Working class children succeed better within schools having an elitist orientation in schools having an industrial or a modernising one. Orientation towards a technological third form are more frequent i modernising or compensatory schools. No type of secondary school succeds in reducing the social gap between attainment levels : the conservatist and the industrial ones multiply it by four, the elistist ones seeming to be less unjust, as it double it. No project of any type will optimise pupil's aspirations level : it's inside industrial and compensatory scho that pupil's orientation project reveals a bigger discouragement in frequenting high school until the last year

Full textThis PHD proposes a sociological discussion upon the formal school model, in order to embrace School in its both dimensions : universal and specific. In order to get a view of some aspects of high school in French contemporary society, we confronted the hypothesis according to which the formal school model is built during the socio-historical evolution of societies, without, however, losing its unicity. We tried to combine various analysis of the construction of the formal school model within contemporary school (proceeding with two questions : are there variations within the very constitutive elements of the formal school model ? What kind of variations?), with other analysis of the characteristics of the contemporary school forms. These two levels enhanced one another : the first one as an analyzer of the other one, which in return enabled to explore our original questions. We leant on an empirical studies of two public high schools defining themselves as innovative, and located on the fringe of french education system : an internat d'excellence and a microlycée. Without forgetting its diachronic dimension, we chose to give priority to the study of its synchronic dimension, with a particular attention to the issues raised by the meso and micro-contextual levels, less developed in the previous sociological studies about the same object

With this truth in mind then, we do aspire to try the depths of research in this respect. To this end, we have undertaken three ways: namely, the analysis of scheduled texts related to the teaching of French, teachers interviewing and analysis of textbooks used in high schools. Our research, therefore, comprises two main parts: the first part deals with educational system and teaching of French in Morocco; whereas, the second one is devoted to the position of literary texts in the official documents as well as in educationalists’ interpretative representations of Maghreb literature in the curricula

Full textThe aim of this research is to understand how pupils defined as "being without learning disabilities", suddenly do not adapt when faced with the demands imposed by the CE1 (7 years-olds). The CE1, trough the impossibility of certain pupils to solve the new situations proposed wrill reveal, by plan of the performances, a dysfunction in the level of the competencies. We assume the hypothesis that the increasing importance accorded to various quantitative techniques (mumbers, length etc) require the acquisition of an operative reasoning following the development of the cognitive structures genesis. We have performed this study in the theorectic field of cognitive psychology and we have leaned on the work of J. Piaget and his collaborators. We have used some piagetian lasks to establish our manipulation, wich enabled the collection of data. This data is analyzed according to several aspects : the centralization of the difference-ressemblance, of the object or its criteria of the subject-object-transformation, of the perception-evocation-transformation, the causation, the three arguments of conservation. Thus we obtain various taxonomies that we organize genetically into a model that allows to situate pupils in disabilities while situating their thinking processes. This study should allow the possibility of setting up remedial as well as preventive actions

It is composed of the "forces of education" and the"social relations of education. " The thesis analyzes these relations within the context of deciding on the orientation of pupils in secondary schools, particularly as regards "high school structure reform" in Korea (1990-1995) and the implementation of the "80% policy" in France (1980-1992). We used statistics on education and labour, previous studies and official documents. The main focus of the analysis is the hierarchical order and the opposition between the different elements within social relations of education. The thesis analysed also the articulation of the different contradictions : contradiction within the social relations of education, contradiction of the forces of education, contradiction within the relations of production

Full textThis work deals with the analysis of educational practices of the parents of students and the possible influence of the type of educational practices used on the social development and academic achievement of those students families in France and in Syria. 56 Syrian and 57 French parents, as well as 56 Syrian and 56 French children aged from 8 to 12 years old took part in this study. Their educational practices were studied with the help of a short questionnaire from “the Parental Authority Questionnaire” (PAQ) which was completed by parents in their homes and by children at school. A child’s social development was studied with the help of a short version of the “the Vineland Social Maturity Scale”; it is an academic achievement was studied with the help of questionnaire made by the author of this thesis. The tow aforementioned questionnaires were completed by the teachers. The results show that the same categories of educational practices (authoritarian, democratic and permissive) may be found both in France and in Syria; however, there are less correlations to be found between the answers grew by Syrian participants. They also show that parents’ educational practices and the child’s social development are significantly correlated. We have found a considerable interaction between the country, gender and educational practices. However, these practices are not correlated with the child’s academic achievement. The discussion of these results was based on the works which claim that parents’ educational practices and their influence vary according to the culture

Full textOur role of trainer of trainers leads us to undertake this which, we think it, is convenient for our country whose development, following the example of all countries, rests one its education system. Beginning with the increasing concern expressed by teachers, we undertook a scientific study on the school climate in Burkina Faso. A critical analysis of the scientific literature enabled us to master the elementary elements related to violence in general, and to school violence in particular, in relation to the different social institutions that are the family, school, medias. . . As for the theoretical framework used, we worked from the sociological and anthropological point of view. To manage to make year a thorough inventory of the true situation of violence in the secondary establishments in Burkina, we used a crossed methodology. By the means of thirty talks, 1127 questionnaires handed back by the pupils and 300 questionnaires answered by adults of the secondary establishments, we reached the conclusion which attests that the school climate in Burkina Faso is not among the hardest. It owes the attenuation of the phenomenon of violence to the education based one the social relationship, and to cultural practice largery adopted by the burkinabè in general, and by the pupils in particular of alliances and relationships through joke. Our study reveals the characteristics of this climate of which the most projecting are the racket of the parents of pupils and the sexual harassment of the girls by their teachers. Two forms of corruption which in addition to political and trade-union interferences, undermine not only the education system of Burkina Faso, but also those of the sub-region countries

Full textOur research tackles the question of how students from different types of educational systems adapt after secondary education. It is divided in two parts : a study on 277 former pupils and 400 parents, to analyse the development of competences specific to each educational system which facilitate their coping after secondary school ; a follow-up of 130 students during their first year in higher education, using various tools at three different periods of time (interviews, Coping Inventory for Stressfull Situations, State Trait Anxiety Inventory, and Beck Depression Inventory). Our hypothesis is that former alternative school pupils will adjust better to higher education, because certain characteristics are better developed : coping focused on the problem, self-efficacy, etc. Our results confirm this assumption : these pupils show higher academic performances and psychological well-being (lower anxiety and depression levels, greater life satisfaction)

Full textThe introduction of theatre, as a practical subject, is a recent addition to High School education. The Option, Theatre-Dramatic Expression, was created in 1986 and lead to the first High School Theatre Diploma in 1989. This introduction was part of an evolution of the education system, changing cultural policies and public theatre. Driven by proselytism, this approach contributes to the general education of the public of tomorrow. The Option is unique in that it has introduced, for the first time, professionals from outside the educational system – namely engaging professional actors to participate in course work and evaluation. Supported by an Ethnographic research and using original statistical data gathered within the Regional Education Authority of Nantes (Pays de Loire) this thesis analyses in situ the construction of this new subject. If this new artistic subject does not constitute a school discipline on purely institutional lines, it is however far from being secondary in the social hierarchical organisation which intensified at the moment of the second school explosion. The thesis illustrates the process of scholarisation of theatre at the different levels and also demonstrates that the actual schooling of theatre (learning, practice and the acquisition of knowledge) is increasingly regulated by school norms. By exploring the Theatre Diploma, it provides an opportunity to examine conflicting issues and the unrecognised effects of policies of democratisation in both schools and culture
