Abstract:
Adaptations, currently the best-known example of intersemiotic translation, more often than not are addressed in the disingenuous terms of ‘fidelity,’ ‘parasitism,’ or ‘solipsism.’ Although it seems a truism that adaptations adapt a ‘text’ from one discursive field to another, such a straightforward causality conflicts with the notion of ‘discursive field’ in which it is wont to occur. Moreover, the adaptation presented as adaptation loses its referential effect when the receiver is unacquainted with the material transposed. Together both issues — i.e. linearity and referentiality — in fact account for most of the misconceptions about the paradoxical phenomenon that is adaptation. This essay therefore proposes a semiological argument aimed at providing a better understanding of the discursive mechanisms at work in adaptational practice.

The article off ers a review of books on the theory of adaptation, including collective monographs edited by well-known cultural theorists Linda Hutchen (“A Th eory of Adaptation” (2013)), Deborah Cartmell (“Teaching Adaptations” (2014)), and Th omas Leitch (“Th e Oxford Handbook of Adaptation Studies” (2017)), which in recent years have clarifi ed their positions on the theory of adaptation in connection with the rapid spread of diff erent types and genres of adaptation in contemporary convergent environment. Th is situation directs the Adaptation Studies themselves from traditional “literary and fi lm” studies towards Intermedia Studies and Media Studies. In a new way, the “fi delity” issue, the nature of the prototext, the cultural assessment of the adaptation, the problem of author, and the role of the audience and fandom in the creation and franchising of various adaptations are formulated. Th e socio-cultural and media aspects come to the fore, forcing us to think about adaptation in the categories of evolutionary and environmentalist theory.

Abstract:
First, as part of a longer work on theorizing Filipino adaptation, this study discusses extant samples of komiks-to-film adaptations in the 1950s. The study reviews received/dominant/Western adaptation literatures that have dominated the field. Secondly, it argues for the following points as a springboard to construct a theory of adaptation: The limits of received/dominant/Western film adaptation theory dominating postcolonial cinemas such as the Philippines; The need to de-Westernize theory or to indigenize Filipino film adaptation theory; and To recognize constructs and formulate concepts from historical and cultural Filipino realities to inform the theory. This study is a meta-theoretical discussion that will begin the construction of a Filipino film adaptation theory.

Abstract:
If one is to inherit a theatrical text to let it survive throughout time, there is a twofold task to be committed: in Roland Barthes’s terms, preserving its studium and at the same time devising its new punctum; in other words, maintaining consistency of the work without seriously ravaging it on one hand, and on the other, ingeniously appreciating the work to save it from repeated reception without any peculiar variation. In the case of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, the prince Hamlet as a character with inward personality has been a punctum since the seventeenth century. However, now that such concepts as the unconscious or psychology have become so familiar a concept to the contemporary, Hamlet’s personality is hardly effective as a punctum. Alternately, the concept of impersonality in Hamlet is now new to us, hence a new punctum of the play. In this perspective, the foundational story of Hamlet is not the tragic drama itself, but rather the positionality of the prince Hamlet in Elsinore, that is, personality versus impersonality. Gregory Doran’s Hamlet (2009), produced by BBC in collaboration with Royal Shakespeare Company, provides an example of alternate reading of Hamlet by suggesting surveillance technology as the embodiment of impersonality in the play.

A central feature of Darwin's theory of natural selection is that it explains the purpose of biological adaptation. Here, I: emphasize the scientific importance of understanding what adaptations are for, in terms of facilitating the derivation of empirically testable predictions; discuss the population genetical basis for Darwin's theory of the purpose of adaptation, with reference to Fisher's ‘fundamental theorem of natural selection'; and show that a deeper understanding of the purpose of adaptation is achieved in the context of social evolution, with reference to inclusive fitness and superorganisms.

Burns, Carolyn Claire Isabelle. "Adaptation and twentieth-century opera." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/10617.

Full text
Abstract:
Combining critical theory and dramaturgical analysis, this thesis considers twentieth-century English-language opera adaptations from a structural and cultural perspective, with particular focus on the increasing complexity of relationships between different types of literary text and the position of contemporary opera within national literary cultures. Employing the strategies of new musicology, particularly the examination of the ways the experience and interpretation of music is shaped by gender and sexuality, this argument forms a rebuttal of conventional opera analysis which frames theoretical consideration of the genre as primarily a negotiation of the comparative representative power of the libretto and the score. This thesis consists of three parts: the first develops a theoretical framework for the consideration of adaptation, combining analysis of adaptation theory, opera studies and a thematic reading of the prominence of psychological narratives in twentieth-century drama. The second part suggests a framework for narrative analysis of opera, beginning with a discussion of the thematic and structural expression of femininity in opera and the representative function played by the sung voice in narrative music, identifying non-naturalistic dramaturgical analogues to opera, and considering the aesthetic implications of extravagant stage artifice. The final part outlines the changing cultural position of opera in contemporary society through discussion of the position of the genre in relation to broader stage and literary culture in the United States and Australia, with particular focus on the impact of broadcast and recording technology on opera production, closing with a consideration of how the complex relationship between technology and live acoustic performance might come to shape the composition of new work. This thesis concludes with the contention that while the specific conventions and cultural status of opera make it an ideal media for atypical interpretations of canonical texts, the intricacy of the relationship between adapted operas and their source material is a reflection of the expansive creative and critical potential of all textual adaptations, rather than an exception based on the particular stylistic specifications of opera.

Abstract:

A common assumption in machine learning is that training and testing data are i.i.d. realizations of the same distribution. However, this assumption is often violated in practice: the training and test distributions are often somewhat related but different. For example, the training sample for a face recognition system may be a carefully curated data set in general different from the full face data found on online. Similarly, spam email messages change over time and thus the training sample for a spam classifier at any time differs from the test data. The first problem described above is known as domain adaptation and the second known as learning under drifting distributions. The first part of this thesis presents theory and algorithms for these problems. For domain adaptation, we provide tight learning bounds based on the novel concept of generalized discrepancy. These bounds strongly motivate our learning algorithm and it is shown, both theoretically and empirically, that this algorithm can significaly improve upon the current state-of-the-art. We extend the theoretical results of domain adaptation to the more challenging scenario of learning under drifting distributions. Moreover, we establish a deep connection between on-line learning and this problem. In particular, we provide a novel on-line to batch conversion that motivates a learning algorithm with very favorable empirical performance. The second part of this thesis studies a crucial problem at the intersection of learning and game theory: revenue optimization in repeated auctions. More precisely, we study second-price and generalized second-price auctions with reserve. These auction mechanisms have become extremely popular in recent years due to the advent of online advertisement. Both type of auctions are characterized by a reserve price representing the minimum value at which the seller is willing to forego of the object in question. Therefore, selecting an optimal reserve price is crucial in achieving the largest possible revenue. We cast this problem as a learning problem and provide the first theoretical analysis for learning optimal reserve prices from samples for both second-price and generalized second-price auctions. These results, however, assume that buyers do not react strategically to changes in reserve prices. In the last chapter of this thesis, we analyze the possible strategies for the buyers and show that, if the seller is more patient than the buyer, it is not in the best interest of the buyer to behave strategically.

Ma, Qiang. "The application of genetic algorithms to the adaptation of IIR filters." Thesis, Loughborough University, 1995. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/32269.

Full text
Abstract:
The adaptation of an IIR filter is a very difficult problem due to its non-quadratic performance surface and potential instability. Conventional adaptive IIR algorithms suffer from potential instability problems and a high cost for stability monitoring. Therefore, there is much interest in adaptive IIR filters based on alternative algorithms. Genetic algorithms are a family of search algorithms based on natural selection and genetics. They have been successfully used in many different areas. Genetic algorithms applied to the adaptation of IIR filtering problems are studied in this thesis, and show that the genetic algorithm approach has a number of advantages over conventional gradient algorithms, particularly, for the adaptation of high order adaptive IIR filters, IIR filters with poles close to the unit circle and IIR filters with multi-modal error surfaces. The conventional gradient algorithms have difficulty solving these problems. Coefficient results are presented for various orders of IIR filters in this thesis. In the computer simulations presented in this thesis, the direct, cascade, parallel and lattice form IIR filter structures have been used and compared. The lattice form IIR filter structure shows its superiority over the cascade and parallel form IIR filter structures in terms of its mean square error convergence performance.

Abstract:
The article studies the results of the research aimed at the improvement of the methodology of develop- ment of the health-preserving competence of a Physical Education teacher in conditions of post-graduate education on the basis of Nikolai Bernstein’s theory of movement construction using virtual reality technologies. Based on the use of AR/VR technologies a software application “Virtual Model Illustrating Nikolai Bernstein’s Theory of Movement Construction” was developed. The stated model is one of the tools of the “Methodology of development of the health preserving competence of a Physical Educa- tion teacher on the basis of Nikolai Bernstein’s theory of the levels of movement construction”. The experimental study determines that the application of the virtual model within the stated methodology is an effective tool for the development of the health preserving competence of a Physical Education teacher. The application of the virtual model allows the actualization of the health preserving, conceptual, gnoseological, biomechanical, inclusive, corrective potentials of Nikolai Bernstein’s theory of movement construction. The use of the virtual model presents the ways of targeted and meaningful use of Nikolai Bernstein’s theory of the levels of movement construction by a Physical Education teacher and the improvement of physical and recreational technologies and concrete physical exercises and movement modes. Due to the application of virtual reality tools, health-preserving, preventative, corrective and developmental strategies are being formed among which the significant ones are: “Application of syner- gistic movements to adaptation to movement activity, and recreation”, “Application of spatial movements for actualization of the orientation and search activities and development of spatial thinking”, “Use of movements with a complicated algorithm for intellect development”.

Full text
Abstract:
There are numerous efforts underway at the local, regional, and state level across the state of Connecticut to address the impacts of climate change. Scientific assessments, community engagement, and adaptation project designs are just a few of the key activities. Additionally, climate-related goals are being integrated into some local planning processes and some municipalities have undertaken resilience plans. Despite these projects, there are glaring gaps in the existing authority or obligations of local governments that potentially hinder climate planning at the local level. This type of systems analysis highlights specific planning obligations that are often related to climate planning but have not yet incorporated the impacts and adaptations to climate change fully. However, optimizing or expanding existing local authority or planning obligations could significantly advance adaptation across the state. Firstly, it would make climate planning an ongoing effort as opposed to episodic. Secondly, it could address gaps that have the potential to hinder projects currently underway. Thirdly, it could advance efforts to address historically excluded and harmed communities across the state by ensuring they are included in climate change planning and that adaptation projects or resilience programs and policies redress those inequities. This white paper outlines the gaps in resilience planning authority and planning mechanisms then provides potential opportunities to address the gaps.

Abstract:
Dementia is an illness with complex health needs, varying between individuals and increasing in severity over time. Approaches to use technology to aid people with dementia are often designed for a specific environment and/or purpose, such as the RadioMe system, a system designed to detect agitation in people with mild dementia living in their own home and calming them with music when agitation is detected. Both the monitoring and intervention components could potentially be beneficially used outside of the own home to aid people with dementia and carers in everyday life. But the adaptation could put additional burdens on the carer, as many decisions and the handling of the data and software could rely on their input. In this paper we discuss thoughts on the potential role of the carer for adaptations of specified system’s expansion to a larger ecosystem on the example of RadioMe.

Abstract:
The field of climate change adaptation metrics is complex and fast-changing. Given the highly contextual nature of adaptation and the array of applied definitions of adaptation and “success”, there is no single global set of adaptation metrics and indicators or definition of adaptation success. There is a burgeoning literature on the Global Goal on Adaptation (GGA), how to measure it and adaptation metrics. However, the landscape is scattered and the subject is very complex. Climate impacts and the effects of adaptation measures themselves spill across national borders, although adaptation is still treated as a largely domestic issue despite the global rhetoric of the GGA. This makes an aggregate global goal extremely technically challenging and tracing the plethora of existing indicators and metrics difficult. Furthermore, there is relatively few specific literature directly on the topic of global measurement of adaptation. This rapid review provides information on some of the metrics and measurement approaches in use across national and sub-national government levels. It gives a brief discussion of the issues around measuring the GGA, flags some key resources in this area and also touches on some initiatives and guidance aimed at helping users to select metrics. This is not a systematic review and given the time limitations and the number of adaptation metrics approaches in use, it is only able to provide a small snapshot of current research.

Abstract:
The Adaptation Resources for Agriculture Workbook was jointly developed by USDA Climate Hubs and NRCS to support producers, service providers, and educators to manage climate change. The workbook helps producers consider both short-term adaptive management actions (<5 yrs) and long-range strategic plans (5 to 20 yrs, subject to farm type). This workbook pro-motes adaptation through multiple resources including a “menu” of adaptation strategies/approaches and example tactics for cropping and forages, confined livestock, grazing, orchards and small fruit and vegetable production systems. Recent efforts by USDA Climate Hub NRCS Liaisons work to increase the number of examples, and have been documented as Case Studies. These Case Studies are of producers utilizing the 5-step process in the workbook to document their management choices to ameliorate climate change impacts to their operations.

Newsham, Andrew, Toendepi Shonhe, and Tsitsidzashe Bvute. Commercial Tobacco Production and Climate Change Adaptation in Mazowe, Zimbabwe. Institute of Development Studies (IDS), September 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/apra.2021.023.

Abstract:
There has been an increasingly well-documented, rapid rise in tobacco production over the last couple of decades in Mazowe, Zimbabwe, despite growing public health concerns about lung cancer and nicotine’s addictive capacities in the wealthier countries of the West – even affecting the South African market. This has been accompanied by a shift away from its production almost completely on large-scale farms towards predominantly small-scale farms. To date, less consideration has been given to the implications of climate change for tobacco production. Given the hopes that it can make a serious contribution to poverty reduction and food security, it is of increasing importance to understand these implications, to identify the most relevant and/or effective adaptation options and to assess the viability of their successful adoption. This paper presents a fine-grained, qualitative bottom-up analysis of the implications for commercial tobacco production of climate change impacts in Zimbabwe.

Abstract:
Working farm lands and specialty crop farms are an important and dominate part of Wisconsin’s Driftless region providing a multitude of agricultural products and jobs. One of the many challenges facing the specialty crop producers in this region and throughout the US is climate change. Brix Cider of Barneveld, WI participated in the Adaptation Workbook* 5-step process to see if there are ways for their operation to become more resilient in a changing climate.
