---Breast milk is the staple food for babies. Postpartum mothers provide breast milk to their babies for 6 months. Breastfeeding by mothers during the adaptation period for new habits is still followed by issues that contain the prohibition of breastfeeding, if the mother who gives birth is positive for Covid -19. The PPM (Community Service) activity with the theme "The Role of Families in Improving Maternal and Child Health in the Adaptation Period for New Habits with the sub-theme" Preparing for Postpartum Mother During Breastfeeding in the Adaptation Period for New Habits in Breastfeeding "aims to increase the knowledge and skills of postpartum mothers through family role, when adapting to new habits after a new normal adaptation period. In addition, this activity is an effort to increase the knowledge of postpartum mothers so that they stay healthy in the era of adapting to new habits. The role of the family is very important for survival during the adaptation process. A postpartum mother will start new things by adapting to new habits. This adaptation requires proper knowledge and understanding as provisions so that breastfeeding during the adaptation of new habits can be achieved. Webinars on the myths of new breastfeeding habits can help mothers who have a poor understanding of adapting to new habits during breastfeeding. In addition, family support can also help breastfeeding success. Thus the role of the family in improving the health of postpartum mothers while adapting to new habits can be achieved.

AbstractDuring this Covid-19 pandemic, the government has intensively disseminated the application of new habit adaptations to all levels of Indonesian society to prevent the transmission of the Covid-19 virus. For this reason, with this new habit, we created this article which discusses how to maximize the adaptation of new habits by using automatic hand washing tools. This tool is made to facilitate and minimize indirect touch when washing hands, which is a form of adaptation to new habits during the Covid-19 pandemic. When the hand is under the water faucet at a certain distance, the sensor will detect an object under the hose. Then the pump connected to the water hose will open so that water flows from the hose. With these results, this tool can work properly. Keywords: Automatic Hand Wash, Infrared Sensor

Abstract:
Changes of habitats are amongst the main drivers of evolutionary processes. Corresponding shifts in the behaviour and life history traits of species might in turn also alter ecosystem attributes. The reproduction of Western European fire salamanders (Salamandra salamandra), in small pond habitats instead of first order streams, is one example of a recent local adaptation. Since fire salamander larvae are important top-predators in these fish free habitats, their presence likely changes various aspects of ecosystem functioning. Here, it was analysed how the ecological performance of salamander larvae in ponds in the Kottenforst in Western Germany changed in comparison to sympatric stream populations. Further, it was analysed how their presence in ponds influenced key ecosystem attributes such as prey density and diversity and aquatic-terrestrial linkage. To assess the impact of the life cycle shifts in salamanders on the pond functioning, detailed investigations of salamander larvae population dynamics, phenology, and macroinvertebrate community development in ponds were combined with experimental manipulations of the salamander presence. In the first part of this study, the impact of pond presence of fire salamanders in terms of ecosystem functioning focussing on aquatic terrestrial subsidy transfer was calculated. The study could show, that the adaptation of fire salamanders to breed in pools led to strong increases of animal-mediated import of terrestrial matter into the aquatic habitats. The hypothesis about the impact on macroinvertebrate communities derived from these calculations was then tested experimentally. It was shown, that presence of salamander larvae could influence some taxa of macroinvertebrates but they had only limited effects on the food web structure in their aquatic habitats. Yet, a high relevance of the subsidy exchange from aquatic to terrestrial and its high relevance for the predator persistence in the system could again be confirmed. Moreover, it was demonstrated, that the larval behaviour and performance could have a high inter-annual variability as a reaction to contrasting ecosystem constraints in comparison to the stream habitats. A fact that integrally separates the pond ecotype from stream ecotype conspecifics.

Parkkali, Seija Anna. "The role of natural selection and adaptation versus phenotypic plasticity in the invasive success of Hieracium lepidulum in New Zealand." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Biological Sciences, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/1799.

Full text
Abstract:
Hieracium lepidulum is an invasive weed in New Zealand. It colonises a wide range of habitats including pine plantations, scrubland, native Nothofagus forest, and mid-altitude to alpine tussock grassland, where it is competing with indigenous species. Understanding the breeding systems and population genetic structure of H. lepidulum is important for biocontrol, and aids in the understanding of evolutionary colonisation processes. H. lepidulum is a triploid, diplosporous, obligate apomict. This type of reproduction through clonal seed does not involve meiosis or fertilisation, and theoretically populations should contain very low levels of genetic variation, the only source being somatic mutation. Common garden experiments and microsatellite markers were used to determine the population genetic structure of H. lepidulum populations in the Craigieburn Range, Canterbury. Both experiments revealed that populations, sampled from three replicate altitudes within three geographically-separated locations, contained no genetic variation; individuals all possessed the same microsatellite genotype. These results strongly suggest that the Craigieburn Range H. lepidulum individuals reproduce solely by apomixis and populations belong to the same clonal lineage. Populations were also examined for their response to two abiotic environmental ‘stresses’, drought and shade. H. lepidulum populations’ exhibited high drought tolerance, yet appeared to be shade-intolerant. Low levels of reproduction in light-limiting habitats will prevent the invasion of H. lepidulum into closed-canopy forest habitats. H. lepidulum appears to have overcome the reduction in fitness associated with apomictic reproduction by phenotypic plasticity, fixed heterozygosity and polyploidy – all associated with increased vigour, fitness, and the ability to occupy broader ecological niches. This study’s results are hopeful for the development of biocontrol programs involving genotype-specific pathogens but suggest that grazing management may not succeed. The data will be useful for future comparisons of genetic structure during the course of H. lepidulum invasions and will contribute to the management of this invasive weed.

Bruy, David. "Diversity, ecology and evolution of monocaulous plants in New Caledonia." Thesis, Montpellier, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018MONTG087/document.

Full text
Abstract:
The convergent evolution in growth habit is a fundamental phenomenon linking plant ecology and evolution. Remarkably illustrated in island biotas, this phenomenon has never been identified in the original and megadiverse New Caledonian biodiversity hotspot. Through an approach combining plant architecture, functional traits, taxonomy, phylogeny and environmental data, this thesis analyses the evolutionary history of the scarcely known monocaulous growth habit in New Caledonia. Monocauls are self-supporting woody plants whose cardinal functions rely on a single visible stem. In New Caledonia, they are represented by 182 dicotyledonous species belonging to 41 genera and 30 families and are critically endangered. The repeated evolution of the monocaulie in New Caledonia, resulting from at least 31 independent events, is one of the most remarkable cases of convergence in insular environments. In the genus Atractocarpus (Rubiaceae), monocauly evolved recently two to three times through branch reductions into inflorescences, emphasizing the importance of heterochronic processes in the evolution of growth habit. Monocauly is strongly correlated with several traits illustrating major constraints in functional coordination. The evolution of monocauly is strongly associated with rainforests and ultramafic substrate, and seems to have contributed to the diversification of lineages by niche partitioning. The remarkable convergence toward monocauly in New Caledonia can be explained by four major hypotheses: (i) the structural features of rainforests (related to cyclone frequency and intensity) favoring unidirectional exploration of space, (ii) the edaphic constraints associated with ultramafic substrate favoring architectural pauperization, (iii) the historical absence of large native browsers to which monocauls are particularly sensitive, and (iv) the persistence of rainforest during – and spread-out after – glacial episodes that served as refugia and further provided ecological opportunities

Abstract:
In the first chapter of this work, I provide an introduction to the current discussion of scribal habits. In Chapter Two, I discuss Abschriften-or manuscripts with extant known exemplars-, their history in textual criticism, and how they can be used to elucidate the discussion of scribal habits. I also present a methodology for determining if a manuscript is an Abschrift. In Chapter Three, I analyze P127, which is not an Abschrift, in order that we may become familiar with determining scribal habits by singular readings. Chapters Four through Six present the scribal habits of selected proposed manuscript pairs: 0319 and 0320 as direct copies of 06 (with their Latin counterparts VL 76 and VL83 as direct copies of VL 75), 205 as a direct copy of 2886, and 821 as a direct copy of 0141. I discuss in Chapter Four the need to better understand the scribal habits of manuscripts written by scribes who wrote in their non-native language. Additionally, I conclude that 205 and 2886 are, in fact, not copies of one another. In the conclusion, I argue that there is no common scribal habit shared by all scribes except that this study has not found a scribe who adds more words than they lose. Additionally, textual critics should place greater emphasis on the roles played by patrons and readers of the text rather than on scribes alone.

Abstract:
In this thesis the study focusses on what facilitates or impedes adaptation of business model (BM) concept elements in new firms. Using data from QUT's Comprehensive Australian Study of Entrepreneurial Emergence (CAUSEE), the research shows that firms with more human capital and networking demonstrated higher BM adaption. Additionally, certain aspects of human capital and networking were complementary, and others acting as substitutes for each other, for the purpose of generating BM adaptation. Combining these elements with external (technological and international) contexts uncovered more nuanced explanations of what facilitates or impedes BM adaptation in new firms.

Includes bibliographical references.<br>The objective of this M.Arch dissertation is to study the Ghanzi District, Botswana. Because of the few developments and small population in the area, it might be perceived as a place with little to offer architecturally. I am interested in uncovering the contextual layers (landscape and cultures) in this area that could inform and improve the architecture there. The main objective is to investigate an accommodating architecture that allows the Basarwa (Bushmen in Botswana) to be integrated into the mainstream Batswana, but still allow for them to lead their daily traditional lives and express their id entity in ways consistent with their own values.

Abstract:
Abstract The long-term survival of populations depends on genetic variation in traits related to survival and reproductive fitness. The polygenic architecture of traits is thought to facilitate adaptive shifts, but whether tree species will be able to adapt to the currently rapidly changing climatic conditions remains a subject of debate. On the other hand, trees are characterized by considerable phenotypic plasticity that allows them to grow under different or variable environmental conditions caused by global climate change. Phenotypic plasticity may thus help populations survive by “buying time” until genetic adaptation to the new environmental conditions occurs. One of the most important mechanisms underlying phenotypic plasticity is epigenetic regulation—stable altered gene expression without changes to the DNA sequence. Efficient dispersal mechanisms and the high fecundity of forest trees can promote genetic connectivity and facilitate the spread of adaptive genes and the colonization of new habitats. However, the colonization of new areas in response to a shift in suitable habitats, for example by northward migration, requires the dispersal of diploid sporophytes by seeds or fruits. Natural dispersion of tree species is therefore likely largely lagging behind the expansion of potentially suitable habitats dependent on the genetic system of species.

Abstract:
AbstractThe new normal is a new order created to adapt to the Covid-19 pandemic, a new habit built on adaptation to promote a clean and healthy lifestyle. The pandemic is a real-life example of a volatile-uncertain-complex-ambiguous (VUCA) world. It has resulted in huge changes in leadership and management of business entities. The goal of this study is to analyze digital leader characteristics from related digital leadership papers on the world wide web and develop a digital leader framework. Google Scholar was used as a web browser tool to collect data. The study’s keywords included digital leadership, digital leaders, digital leader characteristics, digital leader qualities, digital leader traits, leadership traits for a new normal age, and leadership skill for a new normal age. The synthesis matrix techniques with congruence index of sources technique have been used to analyze the content of the literature review. For further model development, the accuracy of essential aspects from at least three sources was required. This study discovered 61 high-quality digital leaders from seven journals. The finalized digital leader characteristics have been synthesized and analyzed by using congruence index criterion, which requires a minimum three sources. According to the findings of this study, ten characteristics of digital leaders met this criterion: innovative visionary, digital intelligence, agile, role model, diversity champion, creative, knowledge-oriented, digital talent scout, employee-oriented, and business intelligence. These characteristics were used to develop a model called “Ten Characteristics of a Digital Leader for the New Normal Age.”

Abstract:
Abstract With the inevitable risk posed by global climate change affecting crop yield and the ever-increasing demands of agricultural produce, crop improvement techniques need to be more precise in developing smart crop varieties. The rice crop, a staple food for the majority of the world population, has a significant role to play in alleviating the global hunger problem. With the world population burgeoning at an unprecedented rate, limited fertile land resources, climate change, emerging new races of pests and diseases and consumer preferences for quality attributes, it is imperative to increase crop diversity, and this requires better selection efficiency addressing the challenges of future rice production. Mutation breeding is a fundamental and very successful tool helping to increase crop diversity and allowing plant breeders to exercise their skill in developing desirable crop varieties. The induction of mutations has been used to enhance yield, improve nutritional quality and widen the adaptability of the world's most important crops such as wheat, rice, pulses, millets and oilseeds. India is considered to be one of the primary centres of origin of crop species with the concomitant very high genetic diversity in traditional landraces for different agronomic traits of economic importance. Plant architecture, such as plant height, branching habit (tiller number), leaf shape and patterns, floral and grain traits and quality traits such as aroma, amylose content and cooking quality are of tremendous importance for rice improvement programmes. Traditional landraces of rice have premium grain quality, fetching a premium price, but their cultivation is being marginalized due to their tall stature, proneness to lodging, late maturity and poor yield. Mutation breeding technology has been successfully implemented in rice improvement programmes, which have resulted in the improvement of aromatic rice varieties, such as 'Pusa Basmati 1', 'Dubraj and Jawaphool'. Two high-yielding mutant rice varieties, TCDM-1 ('Trombay Chhattisgarh Dubraj Mutant-1') and TKR Kolam ('Trombay Karjat Rice Kolam'), have been released for cultivation in Chhattisgarh and the Konkan region of Maharashtra. Both these varieties possess dwarf plant stature (110 cm), medium maturity (130 days), premium grain quality and resistance to major pests and diseases. Improvement of other traditional rice varieties is underway which will bring these varieties back into cultivation and help in improving the tribal and marginal farmers' economy.

Abstract:
Nowadays, tourism represents a kind of environmental consumption, and tourists account for a significant proportion of consumption. Tourists therefore play an important role in developing or negatively affecting sustainable tourism. Eco-friendly accommodation, designed to reduce the negative environmental impacts of tourism become increasingly popular worldwide. Although the popularity of eco-friendly hotels has increased, the actual stays in such hotels are relatively short. The impacts of the tourism system on nature, tourist facilities, attractions and tourist habits require systematic research, with the main focus on the causes and consequences of and solutions to environmental problems. Ecotourism is also one of the research areas of environmental sociology, and eco-friendly accommodation represents part of ecotourism. Research into the behaviour of tourists towards, for instance, eco-friendly accommodation, can provide policymakers with relevant information to design new adaptation strategies to mitigate the economic impacts of climate change. The present research aims to analyse tourist practices for mitigating climate change impacts through eco-friendly accommodation based on case studies examined in Latvia.

Abstract:
Original objectives: [a] Screen an array of chickpea and wild annual Cicer germplasm for winter survival. [b] Genetic analysis of winter hardiness in domesticated x wild chickpea crosses. [c] Genetic analysis of vernalization response in domesticated x wild chickpea crosses. [d] Digital expression analysis of a core selection of breeding and germplasm lines of chickpea that differ in winter hardiness and vernalization. [e] Identification of the genes involved in the chickpea winter hardiness and vernalization and construction of gene network controlling these traits. [f] Assessing the phenotypic and genetic correlations between winter hardiness, vernalization response and Ascochyta blight response in chickpea. The complexity of the vernalization response and the inefficiency of our selection experiments (below) required quitting the work on ascochyta response in the framework of this project. Background to the subject: Since its introduction to the Palouse region of WA and Idaho, and the northern Great Plains, chickpea has been a spring rotation legume due to lack of winter hardiness. The short growing season of spring chickpea limits its grain yield and leaves relatively little stubble residue for combating soil erosion. In Israel, chilling temperatures limit pod setting in early springs and narrow the effective reproductive time window of the crop. Winter hardiness and vernalization response of chickpea alleles were lost due to a series of evolutionary bottlenecks; however, such alleles are prevalent in its wild progenitor’s genepool. Major conclusions, solutions, achievements: It appears that both vernalization response and winter hardiness are polygenic traits in the wild-domesticated chickpea genepool. The main conclusion from the fieldwork in Israel is that selection of domesticated winter hardy and vernalization responsive types should be conducted in late flowering and late maturity backgrounds to minimize interference by daylength and temperature response alleles (see our Plant Breeding paper on the subject). The main conclusion from the US winter-hardiness studies is that excellent lines have been identified for germplasm release and continued genetic study. Several of the lines have good seed size and growth habit that will be useful for introgressing winter-hardiness into current chickpea cultivars to develop releases for autumn sowing. We sequenced the transcriptomes and profiled the expression of genes in 87 samples. Differential expression analysis identified a total of 2,452 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between vernalized plants and control plants, of which 287 were shared between two or more Cicer species studied. We cloned 498 genes controlling vernalization, named CVRN genes. Each of the CVRN genes contributes to flowering date advance (FDA) by 3.85% - 10.71%, but 413 (83%) other genes had negative effects on FDA, while only 83 (17%) had positive effects on FDA, when the plant is exposed to cold temperature. The cloned CVRN genes provide new toolkits and knowledge to develop chickpea cultivars that are suitable for autumn-sowing. Scientific &amp; agricultural implications: Unlike the winter cereals (barley, wheat) or pea, in which a single allelic change may induce a switch from winter to spring habit, we were unable to find any evidence for such major gene action in chickpea. In agricultural terms this means that an alternative strategy must be employed in order to isolate late flowering – ascochyta resistant (winter types) domesticated forms to enable autumn sowing of chickpea in the US Great Plains. An environment was identified in U.S. (eastern Washington) where autumn-sown chickpea production is possible using the levels of winter-hardiness discovered once backcrossed into advanced cultivated material with acceptable agronomic traits. The cloned CVRN genes and identified gene networks significantly advance our understanding of molecular mechanisms underlying plant vernalization in general, and chickpea in particular, and provide a new toolkit for switching chickpea from a spring-sowing to autumn-sowing crop.

Abstract:
This report?developed at the request of the United States Fish and Wildlife Service-led Karner Blue Butterfly Recovery Team by Recovery Team members and partners?provides a Karner blue butterfly climate change vulnerability synthesis, explores a range of potential responses, and presents best practices for climate change-informed conservation of the species. The three decades since the Karner blue butterfly?s (Lycaeides [Plebejus] melissa samuelis Nabokov) listing as federally endangered in the United States have seen a diverse and dedicated research and management community coalesce around the species? recovery. This geographically expansive conservation collaboration has broken new ground for threatened and endangered species recovery. Many Karner blue recovery areas are making steady progress towards recovery goals, but some are not. An extremely hot and dry 2012, perhaps aided by adverse longer-term climate trends such as declining snow cover, extirpated the Karner blue from Indiana Dunes National Park and the surrounding Indiana Dunes Karner Blue Butterfly Recovery Unit?the southernmost recovery unit and once host to one of the species? largest populations?as well as from northwest Ohio. Because of the fundamental challenge that climate change represents to Karner blue butterfly recovery and of the general need for endangered species conservation plans to better address climate change, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service-led Karner Blue Butterfly Recovery Team tasked a subset of the team to: Explore the species? climate change sensitivity and adaptive capacity, review ongoing and projected climate change across the Karner blue range and associated uncertainties, and develop and suggest best practices concerning long-term adaptation strategies. Consistent with that mandate, this report synthesizes what is known about Karner blue climate change vulnerability and applies current thinking in climate change adaptation to help foster strategic, long-term, climate change-informed Karner blue recovery and conservation. It develops and explores a range of potential climate change-informed butterfly- and habitat-stewardship responses, using the resist-accept-direct (RAD) framework to foster a broad range of approaches, and provides guidance regarding how they may be pursued. The report also provides suggestions for improving the climate change-exposure component of Karner blue vulnerability assessment.

Abstract:
Climate change and habitat loss are two intersecting issues facing communities and ecosystems in British Columbia’s Lower Mainland. In response to increasingly severe weather, municipalities have invested heavily in engineered defences like floodgates, dikes, and breakwalls, resulting in a profound loss of aquatic and riparian habitat. These lost ecosystems were once critical to local wildlife and provided water management services like flood mitigation and water filtration. Nature-based Solutions offer a unique opportunity to simultaneously address heightened climate risks and habitat loss by using a framework that values the benefits that intact ecosystems provide to human society. Our report highlights the services that Nature-based Solutions can provide, namely, flood mitigation, stormwater management, and carbon sequestration, while discussing successes and challenges associated with their implementation across the Lower Mainland. First, we introduce Surrey’s living dike in Boundary Bay, part of the city’s broader Coastal Flooding Adaptation Strategy. The living dike aims to address heightened coastal flood risk by incorporating components of a natural salt marsh into its design. This design will provide quality estuarine and riparian habitat for migratory birds and salmon in addition to creating a more climate resilient shoreline. Second, we highlight the City of Vancouver’s St. George Rainway project. Located in the heart of the Mt. Pleasant neighbourhood in Vancouver, the project will restore a buried creek along St. George Street. The restored creek will create urban stream habitat, filter pollutants from runoff, and improve rainwater management. This process, known colloquially as “daylighting,” is a new approach to urban rainwater management that values the ecological, economic, and social benefits of urban green space. Lastly, we place a spotlight on the protection of Burns Bog, a Nature-based Solution that foregoes active restoration. By protecting the bog in its current state, carbon remains locked in its soils and plants, actively mitigating climate change. Burns Bog is also an internationally significant stopover site for migratory birds, and contains a myriad of unique plant species found nowhere else in the Lower Mainland. Nearby communities also benefit from the water filtering services it provides, as well as its ability to mitigate flooding.

Abstract:
Sufficient adaptation finance under the New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG) should direct international funding to countries with the least responsibility for climate change, in a way that does not limit their capacity to adapt – for example, with a specific annual sub-goal or target for adaptation finance of at least USD 215 billion annually – with recognition of public finance (grants and concessional loans) as the core form of support. The NCQG should require simultaneous investment in global resilience building, alignment of funding with national plans, and support for locally led adaptation, in order to achieve effective adaptation. For equitable adaptation that reaches the most vulnerable regions, countries and communities, the NCQG should continue to prioritize allocation of adaptation finance to Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and aim to ensure funding reaches local levels.

Abstract:
We present two case studies in which coastal vulnerability modeling was used to quantify the role those coastal ecosystems play in reducing risk to coastal communities now and with future sea-level rise. These analyses were used to inform post-disaster reconstruction and coastal resilience building efforts as well as climate change adaptation strategies. Our goal is to quantify the role that coastal habitat plays in reducing risk to people and shoreline under current conditions and with future sea level rise (SLR). With SLR, we find that the extent of shoreline most exposed to coastal hazards would more than double, and the total population would nearly triple in The Bahamas. Similarly, the population living along high-risk shorelines increases by over 10x if habitat is lost and sea level rise is accounted for in the Mesoamerican Reef.

Coster, Pierre. Firms’ Supply Chain Adaptation to Carbon Taxes. Federal Reserve Bank of New York, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.59576/sr.1136.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper investigates how firms adapt their sourcing of clean and dirty inputs in response to changes in climate policy. We use information from the European Union’s Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) and the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) to create a new classification of clean and dirty products based on whether they are subject to a domestic or a border carbon tax. We then combine this dataset with French firms’ product-level import data over 2000–2019 and estimate that firms’ propensity to import dirty inputs from non-EU countries increased in the 2010s, reflecting carbon leakage. A heterogeneous firm model is then used to quantify the impact of changes in firms’ sourcing of clean and dirty inputs given the implementation of a carbon tax and a carbon tariff. The simulated ETS carbon tax scenario is able to match leakage observed in the data and leads to a higher price level and a modest decline in emissions. The scenario that further includes the CBAM carbon tariff reverses carbon leakage at the cost of an additional rise in prices. Overall, household welfare declines because the higher costs associated with the carbon policies outweigh the benefits of reduced emissions.
