Abstract:
In today’s hybrid media environment, political representatives are expected to deliver their programmatic positions in multiple yet coherent versions. To synchronize these programmatic contents with an accelerated and fragmented media system, they are subjected to what I call ‘adaptation work’. Using ethnographic insights gathered at a party’s headquarter in the Austrian national parliament, the article shows that adaptation work happens in interaction between a digital infrastructure (intranet technology, specific documents) and a writing team (knowledge managers, staff advisers, assistants). This sociomaterial distribution enables practices for archiving and sharing internal knowledge on party positions as well as literary strategies of adjusting positions to different recipients and media. At the same time, adapted positions deliberately shade the internal infrastructure and experts involved in their preparation in order to present representatives as the ones to be held accountable for positions.

Abstract:
In this dissertation, we analyze different aspects of the language used in texts published along different social media, and we propose a set of methods for the automatic extraction of polar adjectives as well as for the automatic classification of these texts. First of all, we propose a new classification of polar adjectives according to their lexical features, based on a case study. Secondly, we implement a new domain adaptable system for the automatic extraction of polar adjectives (along with their polarity values), reducing the use of external language resources. Finally, we propose two automatic classifiers (one rule-based and one based on Decision Trees) to identify documents belonging to different stages of the purchase process and texts that analyze different aspects of the product.

Full text
Abstract:
Through the examination of archived moving images, this practice-based research project explores processes and methodologies adopted by visual artists who use moving image archives as an integral component for the creation of new artworks. Underlying these methods of production are issues of originality, authorship and ownership. The research seeks to examine the role of archives as potential catalysts for the creation of new work and the role artists can play in animating collections thereby generating new meanings for archival materials. Central to the research is the study of traditional moving image archives, taxonomies, classifications and content alongside the more recent emergence of online digital archives. The creative outputs (artworks) comprise an exploration of how this virtual environment has the potential for artists to re-appropriate archival materials and how films housed in traditional moving image archives can respond to the challenge set by these new platforms. New collaborations between the artist-researcher and nine regional film archives test creative methodologies for creating artworks by re-presenting archival collections through a multi-disciplinary approach. The final artworks have been produced as a direct response to the contrast in accessibility of online works, freely available under the Creative Commons license, and the legal constraints placed on publicly funded archives (and archivists) who are nonetheless dedicated to making archives available to a wider audience and who have had a significant input into this research.

Abstract:
Today there are many IT-systems holding information about different things. The information can for example be anything from news feeds to complex environment systems. By making these system collaborate with each other new oppurtunities and functionality can be established. However, since most of the systems are developed individually, there are different ways to communicate with each system. Therefore, The IT-agency Gaia has started a collaboration with the real estate company Klövern AB. The intention was to develop a plat- form for functional- and informational distribution focusing on commercial real estates. The platform was supposed to be available for Klöverns tenants and be used in public environments providing access to intelligent environment systems, processes in facility management and interactive information channels. This report describes the user study, the idea development and the implementation of two Windows 8 Metro application prototypes communicating through this platform. The two prototypes was directed towards the Cnema and Gaia which are both tenants of Klövern. Furthermore, both the applications was written in C# and uses ASP.Net library Signalr for real-time communication.

Abstract:
Since reading difficulties is a growing problem in Society and a problem that hinders Children to take an active part in every day life, I wanted to investigate how the School Library can be an educational resource for students with reading difficulties. Using qualitative interviews, I have gained insight into how three school librarians and two teachers work with Students with reading difficulties at two different Schools. The Respondents feel that they have the Knowledge necessary to work with students with reading difficulties, but Wish they had more Resources in terms of Time and Staff to help Students achieve School Goals even better. There are always new assistive technology for Students with Reading Difficulties, and an important part of the Educational work of the School Library, is to be informed of the Facilities available and how they work. I show, in my Research the importance of cooperation between school libraries and teachers to provide the students with reading difficulties the love of reading and work to promote reading. It is important that the School Librarian is an integral part of the School's Team to take full advantage of every opportunity to help the Reading Impaired Students with Information and finding the right Reading Level. Other important aspects that I see as very important to help the Reading Impaired Students in their Reading Development, is that they are given a lot of time and a Peaceful and Stimulating Environment to read and learn in.

Abstract:
Climate change is a serious problem that threatens our planet and all its inhabitants. The World WildlifeFund puts a great deal of effort to minimize the devastating effects and prevent the frighteningconsequences that the humanity will inevitably face if we do not alter our approach. Addressing this issue, the Earth Hour campaign is the organization’s most important campaign supporting the green movementagainst climate change. The campaign was a success from day one in 2007 in Sydney and quickly spreadaround the world achieving global recognition. The campaign managed to create awareness and bring thepublic's attention to the subject. For example, climate change gained great news value in the mass mediaand through social media, it became greater. Various methods were employed for the promotion of thecampaign. In Turkey, celebrity endorsement proved successful in raising awareness and conveying theWWF's message. Sweden took a different path to address the global warming problem and contactedpoliticians directly. In the current study, the Earth Hour 2014 communication campaigns in Sweden andTurkey were analysed and compared. Data for the study were collected through interviews withrepresentatives of WWF in Sweden and Turkey. With its findings, the study provides valuable insightsinto the similarities and differences between two campaigns. It is noteworthy to see how a globalorganization conducts its "Earth Hour" communication campaign differently in two culturally separatecountries to address the same problem.

Abstract: Animal serum is used in cell culture because of its nutritional factors, however, their use not only is a potential risky for health, due to possible presence of adventitious agents, such as virus and príons, but also is the major responsible of allergic reactions in dogs. BHK-21 cells adapted to suspension growing in standard culture media with 3% of fetal bovine serum were submitted to adaptation to serum free culture media. Serum free culture media used in this study were VP-SFM, EX-CELL 302 and Cellvento BHK-200. Cells were adapted to VP by direct media change, to Ex Cell by direct and gradual media change. Adaptation to Cellvento was only possible by using cells priory adapted to VP-SFM. Cells adapted to Ex Cell culture media presented best growth results. All adapted cells have ability to produce rabies virus. Although, cells adapted to VP-SFM presented best virus productivity. However, virus production using Cellvento BHK-200 presents best economic potential. Keywords: veterinary rabies vaccine, serum free media, BHK-21, cell adaptation.

Abstract:
In the present study, the Cultural Adaptation Process Model was applied to an online module to include adaptations responsive to the online students' culturally-influenced learning styles and preferences. The purpose was to provide the online learners with a variety of course material presentations, where the e-learners had the opportunity to select their preferred structure for learning. The research methodology for the study is Design-Based Research (DBR), which has been identified by many prominent researchers in Instructional Technology as the most productive research approach for the field. DBR integrates different data types and data collection methods (quantitative, qualitative, and mixed) with experience in instructional development and the participants' collaboration. The study produced design principles that are expected to be useful for practitioners when adapting online courses to multicultural audiences. To provide thorough information to instructional designers, the research report includes a detailed description of each phase, an estimate of hours invested per development and testing stages, a list of outcomes found, and a set of recommendations for improving the cultural adaptation model applied. The study is expected to be valuable for educational institutions and corporations that offer online courses to multicultural groups of e-learners.

Abstract:
This Bachelor thesis is about digital tools for event organisers. The platforms offered by companies serve as digital backchannels that among other things facilitate interactions between audience and stage, for example during live Q&A sessions. This work focuses on the tasks and challenges of moderators on site and aims to develop a system that will optimise their workflows. Therefore, a tool is developed that allows moderators to conduct a Q&A session independently without having to rely on the assistance of an event organiser operating a desktop based platform simultaneously. The analysis addresses the moderator's role and tasks. It turns out that the functions of the platform relevant to the moderator can be combined in a mobile interface that is linked to it. Using a semi- structured expert interview, the feedback from clients of the start-up "Happenn" is gathered, which use the already existing platform of the company. Their platform "Happenn Live" serves as case study for this thesis. On the basis of the findings of the methods adapted to Lean UX, a solution approach in the form of a redesign of the platform and a corresponding mobile application for moderators is conceptualised. The structure and visual design of the platform follows the general design standards for desktop- and mobile-based interfaces. In this way, an improved usability can be achieved by making the platform more user-friendly for the user.

Abstract:

This paper is a systematic review of scholarly studies that examines how organizations enhance their ability to generate value through social media. It explores why some organizations are able to adopt and benefit from social media while others cannot. Specifically, it examines: (i) how people and social networks are essential to create value at the organizational level, (ii) how leadership sets the vision and convinces others on the need for change, and (iii) what types of strategy can be implemented to enable knowledge creation through social networks. Argument is made on the vital importance of two variables in particular—leadership and strategy—and their role in moderating how the organization accepts and incorporates change to enhance overall effectiveness and efficiency. Evidence-based research is used to describe relevant theory and practice through qualitative and quantitative sources. It examines how organizations overcome the hurdles associated with change, and how individuals learn to accept new methods to connect, share knowledge, and create value through Web 2.0 technology.

Social media challenges an organization’s ability to manage individuals and information. It requires a shift in the way people work and think; it requires a culture adjustment in how people collaborate in new, more inclusive ways other than relying on the same imbedded methods and inner core of co-workers for answers.

Abstract:
This book focuses on the referendums against water privatization in Italy and explores how activists took to social media, ultimately convincing twenty-seven million citizens to vote. Investigating the relationship between social movements and internet-related activism during complex campaigns, this book examines how a technological evolution — the increased relevance of social media platforms — affected in very different ways organizations with divergent characteristics, promoting at the same time decentralized communication practices, and new ways of coordinating dispersed communities of people. Matteo Cernison combines and adapts a wide set of methods, from social network analysis to digital ethnography, in order to explore in detail how digital activism and face-to-face initiatives interact and overlap. He argues that the geographical scale of actions, the role played by external media professionals, and the activists’ perceptions of digital technologies are key elements that contribute in a significant way to shape the very different communication practices often described as online activism.

Abstract:
This book develops the theme of teaching Italian abroad, starting from the awareness of the motivations for foreign students to study the Italian language and the different methodological procedures in order to teach it.For this purpose, the book focuses on the problems concerning the training of teachers of Italian to foreigners and on the many aspects of teaching Italian in order to propose both a methodological reflection on the edulinguistic project and educational solutions aimed at improving the quality of the students’ learning.Part 1The first part focuses on edulinguistic teaching vision for the learning of the Italian language as a foreign language based upon the principles of the Humanistic Approach.1. Teaching Italian Language Abroad: Institutional Language Policy and StrategiesThis chapter focuses on the situation of Italian foreign language teaching in the world. It also describes the linguistic policy for the promotion of Italian languages abroad adopted by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the results obtained as the number of students involved in the different geographic areas.2. Teaching Trainer Courses as a Key Factor to Improve the Quality of Teaching Italian AbroadIn this chapter teaching trainer courses for Italian language teachers are considered as a part of a strategy to increase the students’ motivations and the learning process.3. Students as a Customer vs Students as a PersonLinguistic education and the Humanistic Approach aim to develop the students’ potential and create an autonomous language personality. Therefore, in this chapter, we outline a teaching perspective that considers the student as a person at the centre of teaching and learning Italian process.Part 2In the second part teaching methodologies to improve the quality of teaching and learning Italian language to foreigners are described.4. Effective Cooperative Learning Strategies to Teach Italian as a Foreign LanguageExamples of cooperative learning are given to illustrate how the following teaching methodology is possible in teaching Italian language even if it demands strong research and clear guidance for educators.5. How to Teach Italian Grammar to ForeignersThis chapter examines the existing research about using a deductive form of teaching grammar versus using an inductive form of teaching it.6. Teaching Italian Through Literature, Movies and CartoonsIn this chapter, different media and sources to teach Italian are examined. Using both classic and digital tools, students can explore the Italian language and culture from different points of view, developing a strategy to revisit thinking and to collaborate with others during the reading of classic texts or reading a cartoon.7. Humanistic Testing and Assessment for Italian as a Foreign LanguageFrom a Humanistic point of view, in this chapter, testing and assessment are considered as potential and relevant instruments to measure the progress and performance of individual students of Italian language.8. How to Plan and Use an Environment to Teach Italian to ForeignersThis chapter focuses on learning space to teach Italian to foreigners. The main aim is to provide practical advice and support to the teachers of Italian language schools that are going to explore how to develop and adapt learning spaces to the teaching activities and the students’ needs.

Abstract:
Chapter 22 traces the history of film adaptions of Hong Kong comics, locally known as manhua, from the late 1940s to the present, from Kiddy Cheung (adapted as The Kid) to McMug Comics (adapted as the McDull film series). Through the examination of selected comics-to-film titles, it examines various stages in the transformation of Hong Kong society and culture. It finds in the successful integration of both media an outstanding example of Hong Kong’s resourcefulness in representing its identity and a rich legacy in Asian popular culture. The essay seeks to preserve the history of two culturally marginalized media currently struggling to maintain their market share and in danger of being forgotten. It includes a filmography listing the publishing dates of the original manhua titles and the theatrical run dates of the adapted film titles.

Abstract:
To understand contemporary governance, one needs to be cognisant of the manner in which media, and perhaps more generally, information, is used as a component of the process. The fundamental contention of the mediatisation literature is that institutions and organisations adapt to the pervasive role of the media, and this paper argues that the same is true for processes of governance. Thus, contemporary governance reflects the extent to which the formal and informal actors in governance have adapted their behaviours to the media environment within which they function. Whatever the goals of a government, they must pursue those goals within the environment shaped (in part) by mediatisation.

Abstract:
WeChat, the most popular social networking service mobile app in China, enables users to contact friends with text, audio, video contents as well as get to know new people within a range of a certain distance. Its latest version has gone beyond the pure social function and opened a window into marketing. This study applies activity theory as a framework to explore new features of WeChat as a new platform for advertising. Then the authors qualitatively analyze the implications that marketers adapted and appropriated WeChat to engage with their customers and in turn how these implications modified the ways of advertising. The significance of this study is that it applied activity theory as an attempt to complement the theoretical pillars of communication study. Activity theory focuses on the activity itself rather than the interaction between WeChat and the users. Second, activity theory reveals a 2-way process which emphasizes both on how advertisers adapt WeChat based on everyday practice; and how WeChat modifies the activities which the advertisers engage in.

Abstract:
This chapter investigates how fast-changing mobile technology has transformed the traditional approach to journalism education at some major mass communication schools, media organizations, and institutions in the United States. This traditional approach to instruction, referred to here as its pedagogical niche, is defined as instructional methods, content, and tools used in mass communication academic, practice and training units. The first and primary objective of this chapter will be to determine how journalism academic institutions are using the rapidly changing media and communication technologies, particularly mobile tools, to reinvent themselves and to enhance their curricula and teaching effectiveness. The second objective is to determine how media organizations have adapted to the increasing use of mobile technologies in journalism.

Abstract:
Microbial substances introduced into the body of animals increase radio stability and reduce the mortality rate. The greatest significance can be obtained by using vaccines based on bacteria of the intestinal-typhoid group, which in the process of life produce antibacterial substances, enzymes, antigens, entero-and exotoxins, and cytokines with radioprotective properties. The tests revealed a complex mechanism of interaction between bifidobacteria and Escherichia in their joint cultivation. The biomass accumulation of E.coli strain «PL-6» and B.bifidum 1 during co-cultivation depended on the ratio of live bacteria E.coli strain «PL-6» and B.bifidum 1. Microcopy of smears made on days 1-4 from monocultures showed that the grown microbes in morphology corresponded to these cultures. The concentration of microorganisms, determined by tenfold dilution by the above method, was 1x109 CFU/ml - E.coli and 1x107 CFU/ml B.bifidum, with a sowing dose of each type of microbe 1x108 CFU/ml. Microcopy of smears made from a mixture of cultures showed that a dilution of 0,9:1,1-1,0:1,0 is most optimal for co-growing bifidum and Escherichia coli, since with a relatively equal number of monocultures on the 1st day Escherichiae multiply intensely, splitting the components of the Blaurock medium and inhibiting the growth of bifidum, but from the 3rd day B.bifidum begins to prevail, splitting E.coli and assimilating substances cleaved by E.coli.

Full text
Abstract:
In this paper, a method for the experimental characterization of the equivalent pore diameter of highly porous open structures is presented. The commonly used characterization of such structures through geometrical properties like ppi number (porous per inch) and porosity proves to be not sufficient for the characterization of length scales related to heat and mass transfer. The procedure used here utilizes the quenching limits for flame propagation as characterization criterion. The determined equivalent pore diameter corresponds to the quenching diameter for a tube-geometry filled with the same combustible mixture. The quenching limit was determined by adjusting critical conditions, which are defined by a constant critical Pe´clet number comprising the laminar flame velocity instead of the flow velocity. Variations of oxygen content and air ratio were used in order to change the laminar flame speed and find the quenching limit for a given porous medium. The equivalent pore diameter determined with this method is a characteristic length scale of the porous medium geometry and is related to the heat transfer between the gas phase and the solid porous structure. The validation of the method was performed on sphere packings with well-documented properties. Several practically relevant highly porous media like foams and fabric lamellae structures were characterized and the results are discussed. Based on the effective heat conductivity (EHC) models of Zehner, Bauer and Schlu¨nder [1–3] for packed beds, an adapted model for foam structures was developed. The adapted model utilizes the equivalent pore diameters determined in the paper and predictions are presented.

Boulanger, Joan, Olivier Balima, and Andre´ Charette. "A Reconstruction Scheme Based on the Radiative Transfer Equation for Graded Index Semi-Transparent Media." In 2010 14th International Heat Transfer Conference. ASMEDC, 2010. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/ihtc14-22818.

Full text
Abstract:
Graded refractive index media appear in numerous industrial applications such as non-isothermal flows, optics material processing, biological imaging. Refractive index gradient has been an early help for combusting flow visualisation. The numerical treatment of radiative transport is difficult in such media due to the curvature of rays, especially when the media are not optically thick. Computer-aided remote probing (inversion) is done today with the help of the diffusion approximation adapted to varying refractive index media but is unsuitable for thin media. Therefore, it is important to develop an approach allowing the use of the radiative transport equation which is the most complete formalism for radiative transfer to date and to couple it to reconstruction schemes. The aim of this study is to demonstrate the reconstruction of an arbitrary refractive index distribution from a least-squares gradient-based iterative inversion algorithm taking advantage of the full transient Radiative Transfer Equation (tRTE). The finite-difference discrete-ordinates method for the tRTE and its adjoint has been implemented, accounting for spatial changes in the distribution of the refractive index in a semi-transparent medium. A least-squares gradient-based iterative algorithm has been designed and elementary tests have been carried to demonstrate reconstruction possibilities.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the study of the Ukrainian segment of video blogging as one of the most popular types of the functioning of the modern blogosphere. The content and statistics of popular video blogs were studied on the example of YouTube channels of Ukrainian bloggers and famous journalists. Today we are witnessing the rapid development of technologies that help journalists become better, and the creators of media content to work more quickly and ensure the completeness of the information. With the help of Internet communication, new ways of disseminating information have appeared in journalism. Journalists more often create their blogs on various platforms. Blogosphere video content has become very popular among the Ukrainian audience on YouTube because today the video format is the most effective in terms of communication. The YouTube social network partially replaces television, and the variety of thematic content is ably adapted to a wide audience. The paper analyzes Ukrainian blogs managed by journalists, where they publish different content formats. Therefore, the presentation of various examples of video blogs in our work helps to understand the specifics of Ukrainian blogging at its current stage of development. After all, videos of popular people such as Michael Shchur, Yanina Sokolova, Ostap Drozdov demonstrate the peculiarities of Ukrainian popular video content. For the research, we chose those blogs that are currently relevant to Ukrainian YouTube and have their specifics and uniqueness. The main objective of a blogger is to react quickly to the flow of information because the rating of the channel being monetized depends on it. With the help of statistical data, we can conclude that the Ukrainian audience is interested in a wide range of different information. Viewers now value the independent opinion of bloggers and more often listen to it. Every important event is covered by bloggers promptly. And the format in which it is presented depends on the individual style of the author and the concept of his channel. We can conclude that the video content of the modern blogosphere is developing rapidly. This provides the audience with information for different tastes.
