Abstract:
The innovation process is central to effective adaption to climate change and development challenges, but models from business and management tend to dominate innovation theory, which sits outside the adaption-development paradigm. This paper presents an alternative conceptual framework to visualize innovations as pathways across the adaption-development landscape for humanitarian and development goals. This useful tool can reveal, map and coordinate innovation strategy. To demonstrate and validate this approach, we analyze a case study of innovation in aftershock forecasting for humanitarian decision-making and show that the most effective strategy is for multiple innovation strands and hubs to move concurrently and cumulatively towards transformative humanitarian and development goals.

Abstract:
The hypothesis that predictable differences would exist between the mean cognitive style of new entrants and those of the longer serving “established” employees in certain departments while not in others was tested. Data from 99 employees from four departments of a large British pharmaceuticals company who completed the Kirton Adaption-Innovation Inventory provided results broadly in line with the expectations of adaption-innovation theory and past research. The mean innovative cognitive style of new entrants to adaptive departments regressed towards the mean of the establishment and the occupational mean over time. In departments where there was no initial significant difference between the mean cognitive style of the new entrants and the established group, no significant shift was shown over time. Implications of these findings are suggested. The data also indicated norms for two occupational groups where previously they did not exist.

Abstract:
This study seeks to understand how professionals’ (creative) Adaption-Innovation behaviors and prior knowledge influence successful participation in two-sided competitive crowdsourcing. Using Kirton’s Adaption-Innovation Theory, the study examines the influence of creatives’ diversity, skills, experience, and activity level on crowdsourcing outcomes. Analysis of cross-sectional data of participants on a popular competitive crowdsourcing platform show that, while diversity and skills do not necessarily lead to higher performance, activity level and experience contribute to creatives’ higher performance. Contribution to literature is by extending Kirton’s Adaption-Innovation Theory objectively as a lens to understand creative participation in crowdsourcing, highlighting key features of crowdsourcing as unbounded by place and skills.

Abstract:
Work on Adaption-Innovation theory has downplayed the importance of the three subscales, focusing instead on the Kirton Adaption-Innovation Inventory and on its total score. Although most Kirton inventory subscale scores correlate with the over-all score, a significant number do not. For this group of 44 successful entrepreneurs, subscale scores differed from those of technology managers in one company and also from the subscale scores of Kirton's original sample. Dividing the subscale continuum into four zones was instrumental in exploring how entrepreneurs' subscale profiles might differ from population norms. The study clearly showed that for the entrepreneur sample there was a distinct mixture of subscale combinations, and rule conformity acted as a moderating variable for originality. This may prove useful in understanding the differences between groups of entrepreneurs. These findings indicate not only a need for more thorough research of the Kirton subscales but also the usefulness of zones for interpreting scores on subscales.

Using alcoholics as subjects, the present study attempted a replication of Kirton's 1978 study in which he demonstrated a relationship between his adaption-innovation theory and Witkin's concept of field dependence/independence. Correlations obtained in the present study paralleled those of Kirton. As a group, alcoholics tended to be field-dependent in orientation. Innovators were less field-dependent than adaptors and “average” individuals. It was suggested that the varied characteristics of alcoholics should be considered when planning therapeutic strategies.

Abstract:
There is an increasing necessity to implement water treatment technologies in order to optimize the use of freshwater resources as the global nursery and greenhouse industry grows. Unfortunately, their adoption has been limited. This study tested a conceptual model for technology adoption based on the Theory of Diffusion of Innovations in tandem with Adaption-Innovation Theory and Critical Thinking Style literature. Using a series of linear and logistic regressions, three characteristics of an innovation—relative advantage, complexity, and trialability—were identified as significant drivers of growers’ decisions to implement water treatment technologies. Growers who seek information when thinking critically and are more innovative when solving problems did not perceive new technologies to be compatible or to possess a relative advantage over their current systems. The results suggested most growers are unsure of how new technologies fit into their existing operations. Creating opportunities for growers to get hands on experience with new technologies, such as a field day, could assist in increasing growers’ implementation. In addition, developing a series of online videos highlighting how to use, adapt and troubleshoot the equipment would greatly enhance chances of long-term adoption.

Abstract:
Recently, concepts and principles from the Complexity Theory (or, generally speaking, the complexity sciences) have been applied as a perspective for capturing the influence of the context, interaction, and adaption in the innovation processes, such as the ones enabled in the business incubators. The purpose of this paper is to implement a frame of reference for understanding the start-ups’ incubator as a complex system where innovation, learning, and self-organization take place. We build on the interfaces between the Complexity Theory (i.e., complexity sciences) and Open Innovation literature to identify principles, patterns, and conditions that frame the incubation practices as simple rules aimed to sustain the innovation process towards the creation of new ventures. Results from the multiple case studies conducted in five incubators show that the features of variety, nonlinear interaction, interdependence, autonomy, and emergence of the incubation process framed as a complex system are enabled in different ways by the combination of the open innovation practices and services provided by the start-ups’ incubators, including the provision of physical infrastructure, access to funding streams, experts/entrepreneurs networking, education/workshops, mentorship, and advice.

Abstract:
In his 1986 analytic review of the first ten years of research on adaption-innovation theory, Mudd commented on the importance of continued research on the Kirton Adaption-Innovation Inventory. Suggestions pertinent to the present study involved an examination of the stability of the instrument as well as the test-retest reliability of the full scale and subscales. A Lindquist Type III analysis of variance was used to examine the influence of creativity training on the stability of the Kirton full scale scores. The scores did not change after training. There was, however, a significant effect for gender by pre- and posttest interactions for the full scale scores. Men's full scale scores were higher than women's, and only men exhibited an increase. The women's pre- and posttest scores appeared more stable. Internal reliability coefficients and test-retest reliability coefficients for both the full scale scores and the subscale scores were very adequate, but the men's scores did increase.

Abstract:
The relationship between imagery and creativity was examined using a prediction from the theories of symbolic representation developed by Morris and Hampson [1, 2] and Kaufmann [3–6]. One-hundred and fifty-four college students completed the Kirton Adaption-Innovation Inventory on preferred styles of problem solving and Paivio's Individual Differences Questionnaire on preferred mode of symbolic representation. At a general level, results were in the expected direction for both theories by showing a significant relationship between innovative problem-solving preference and general level of use of conscious modes of symbolic representation. However, results also supported the more specific prediction from Kaufmann's theory that subjects with an innovative preference would have a relatively stronger preference for imaginal over verbal modes of representation.

Abstract:
According to Kirton's (2003) theory of cognitive style, adaptors thrive on structure and prefer to use well-established procedures or rules to solve problems, whereas innovators eschew structure and prefer to solve problems in novel ways. In a sample of 168 undergraduate university students, support was found for the hypothesis that adaptors would be primarily firstborn children. This result is explained in terms of (a) the preference of first-time (i.e., inexperienced) parents for "tried and true" approaches to problem solving, and (b) the tendency of firstborns to identify with and readily obey their parents.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between originality and Kirton's scale for innovators and adaptors. Kirton's scale measures the way a person solves problems or style, while creativity has been described as level or the efficiency in solving problems. Kirton's 1976 theory states the two variables should not be related; however, careful reading of the manuals of both tests indicates innovators and creative individuals have similar characteristics. Past research has yielded mixed results. For 110 university students, given Sounds and Images and the Kirton Adaption-Innovation Inventory, a significant negative correlation was obtained for adaptors but none for innovators or the entire sample. Perhaps innovation and creativity are related, but only for highly creative persons.

562 subjects completed a test battery containing scales of Dogmatism, Inflexibility, Conservatism, and Intolerance of Ambiguity from which internal consistency coefficients were calculated. Adaption-Innovation theory suggests that (a) adaptors would be more concerned with consistency than innovators, (b) adaptors would be likely to choose and adhere to one of two specific strategies to help achieve high consistency, and (c) innovators would be more likely to switch between alternative strategies. Internal reliability coefficients of the responses of adaptors and innovators test by test and by whole battery are in accord with these predictions.

Qualitative analysis of responses from 10 persons to a hypothetical scenario supported Kirton's Adaption-Innovation theory. The 2 Adaptors accepted the given problem and solution and described creative ways to design traditional classroom-based training. The 8 Innovators challenged the assumptions in the scenario, found creative ways to restructure the problem, and proposed nontraditional learning interventions.

Abstract:
To achieve a successful and sustainable adaptation to climate change we need to transform the way we think about change. Much water management research has focused on technical innovation with a range of new solutions developed to achieve a ‘more sustainable and integrated urban water management cycle’. But Danish municipalities and utility companies are struggling to bring such solutions into practice. ‘Green infrastructure’, for example, requires the consideration of a larger range of aspects related to the urban context than the traditional urban water system optimization. There is the need for standardized methods and guidelines to organize transdisciplinary processes where different types of knowledge and perspectives are taken into account. On the basis of the macro–meso–micro pattern inspired by complexity science and transition theory, we developed a conceptual framework to organize processes addressing the complexity characterizing urban water management in the context of climate change. In this paper the framework is used to organize a research process aiming at understanding and unfolding urban dynamics for sustainable transition. The final goal is to enable local authorities and utilities to create the basis for managing and catalysing the technical and organizational innovation necessary for a sustainable transition towards climate change adaptation in urban areas.

Different approaches to problem solving are needed along the way, ranging from those that strengthen and refine the systems recreate to those that shake up those systems and replace them. In problem solving today, diversity is critical to success. According to research and the experience of practitioners, one of the first things on the new need-to-know list is a functional understanding of how the brain solves problems and the key variables that make it work. Two of those key variables are problem solving level and problem-solving style. Michael Creed, president and CEO of McKim & Creed, Pennsylvanian, an engineering firm specializing in the design of environmental infrastructure, is a staunch supporter of Kirton’s Adaption-Innovation theory and its application in engineering management. The article highlights that getting diverse teams to collaborate effectively takes an understanding of their unique styles. The article suggests that the challenge for a leader is to manage the level and style diversity of the team in ways that balance the value of its members’ diversity and keep the ultimate resolution of its goal in mind.

This study outlines an Italian experience with a large organization in the field of Health Care where major strategical and organizational changes have been carried out during the past 5 years. One of the aspects which has been studied is the relationship between leadership (cognitive) styles and change. The Adaption-Innovation concept and measure (Kirton, 1976, 1989) were applied to the top planning team and the operating team of the structure causing amazing results. The cognitive profile of the leaders of the organizations reflects the kind of vision, mission and managerial decisions they possessed. When leading change, cognitive style has proven to be a strategical weapon and a resource, both at an individual and at a team level. The management of change is in the particular case assumed to be a magical and scientific ability to deal with both the styles within departments, units and offices, in order to keep both the cognitive strategies alive and effective. Implications and application so these finding might be relevant for change management theory and practice.

The interviews were analyzed using deduction, generating themes and assigning them to the relevant PERMA elements.FindingsAlmost all interviews included five or four PERMA elements, supporting the hypothesis about crowdfunding as a form of economic behavior that is triggered by the desire for fulfillment in life. The authors found that the tendency to become a serial crowdfunder is triggered by PERMA and a sense of trust.Originality/valueThis is the first study that presents a well-being theory of non-investment crowdfunding contributions. Based on the interviews, we suggest a theory linking the motivation for backing current and future projects with PERMA elements, sense of trust and the nature of adaption to activities with intrinsic attributes.

Abstract:
The present study aims at investigating English as a Foreign Language (EFL) Saudi students’ adaption of Twitter and utilizing it as an English language learning tool and the different characteristics of each adopter category using Roger’s Diffusion of Innovation Theory (DOI). It targets both the foundation year Saudi female university students studying EFL at the English Language Institute (ELI) at King Abdul Aziz University (KAU) as well as the male and female Saudi students studying English at English language institutes abroad. The sample will consist of 50 female preparatory year students (PYS) studying EFL at the ELI. Their ages will range between the ages of 18 and 21 years old and will all be likely to come from an Arab origin. Furthermore, the study will include 50 male and female English learners who are studying abroad. This quantitative study uses a three parts questionnaire. The first part will request demographic information from participants such as age, years of experiences, academic ranking, and the level they are studying in the students' case. In the second section, participants were asked to choose the response that describes the degree to which they use the innovation (Twitter). In the last section, participants were asked to read 23 statements that measure the different characteristics of each adopter category which influence the user intention and behavior. The 23 statements were based on the five perceived attributes of innovations derived by Rogers (2003). A five-point Likert-type scale ranging from strongly agrees to strongly disagree was applied to assess the perceived attributes of Twitter. The researcher aims at identifying valuable insights on how much the social network website Twitter is accepted and used as a learning tool for Saudi language learners. Therefore, based on the findings of this study, researchers in the same field may expand the study by moving to further experimental research that maybe carried out to investigate the effectiveness of Twitter as a teaching tool in the ELI classroom at KAU and other language institutes outside the Kingdom.

Abstract:
Purpose. The aim of the article is the development of theoretical, methodological provisions and practical recommendations for determining the content of innovation and innovation activities of the enterprise, substantiation of the basic principles of organizational and economic mechanism for managing innovative development of the enterprise and determining the directions of a systematic approach to this mechanism. Methodology of research. The theoretical and methodological basis of the study is the provisions of modern economic theory, scientific works of domestic and foreign scientists on the optimization of management of innovative development at a commercial enterprise. The following general scientific research methods are used to achieve this goal: system-structural and terminological analysis – to streamline the conceptual and terminological apparatus on the economic content of the categories “innovations”, “innovative activity”, “innovation”; grouping, comparison and theoretical generalization – to study scientific papers on the management of innovative development in a commercial enterprise; induction and deduction – to study the classification features of grouping the principles of functioning of the organizational and economic mechanism of management of innovative development of the enterprise; abstract and logical – for theoretical generalization and formulation of conclusions. Findings. The necessity of optimization of management of innovative development at the trade enterprise is substantiated. Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore innovation among micro and small business operators in Italy’s wine industry. Moreover, in adopting the theory of innovation, the study examines winery operators’ perceptions on innovation, ways in which wineries are innovating and whether participants’ responses vary based on demographic characteristics. Design/methodology/approach An online questionnaire designed for this study gathered the responses of 211 participants, composed by owners, winemakers, directors and business partners. Findings Innovation is fundamentally associated with minimising ecological footprint, investments, making improvements in the winery, adapting to trends and new consumer demands and, importantly, with maintaining traditions while enhancing the quality of the wines. Further, participants primarily agree with involvement in wine tourism and adoption of social media as predominant forms of innovating. Several inter-group differences particularly based on levels of wine production and size of the winery emerged. Overall, the findings align with the dimensions of the theory of innovation, namely, benefits, costs, resources and discounting factors. Originality/value Despite the significance of Italy’s wine industry, in terms of exports and consumption on a global scale, academic research focusing on this industry’s innovative practices has been limited. Similarly, there is scant research on innovation among micro and small firms, or on industries relevant to countries’ socio-economic capital. This exploratory study provides an element of originality and value, exploring and contributing to the literature on these under-researched areas.

Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to develop and argue for a new research path to advance theory on incumbent firm adaptation to discontinuous technological change. Integrating variance and process epistemologies, implications of distinguishing a firm's capacity to adapt from their adaptive choices are highlighted. Design/methodology/approach The concepts and argument presented are based on an extensive review and synthesis of the literature on the phenomenon. Findings Distinguishing resource-based capacity variables and behavioral-based choice variables can fuel progress in the literature on incumbent adaptation to technological changes. More attention is needed on the direct, proximate determinants of what occurs in the process of adaptation, e.g. the intermediate choices to adapt, the timing of adaptive actions and the selection of a means for adapting. Work must then associate specific choices with performance outcomes to complete both sides of the mediated cause-effect model connecting characteristics of the decision issue to performance. Originality/value Most studies toward understanding how incumbent firms adapt to discontinuous technological innovation have used variance analyses to identify firm and technology characteristics that explain adaptation outcomes. Focusing on characteristics and content, however, does not adequately explain why or how firms adapt. Scholars thus continue to lament the lack of clear, practical theory. I contend one heretofore unaddressed reason for this dissatisfaction is that too much of the research base neglects the importance of understanding choices and the factors affecting them.

Abstract:
The worldwide competitive struggles in high-tech environment such as knowledge-based companies have featured the necessity to infer how competitive advantage is gained. Dynamic capabilities as the origin of competitive advantage emphasize the changing character of the environment and nature of future competition, acceleration in innovation growth, and the main role of strategic management in adaption, integration, and reconfiguration of organizational skills, resources, and working competences toward shifting environment. The recent inquiry is based on an interpretive paradigm and an inductive approach. The qualitative part of the research is conducted with exploratory purpose through grounded theory strategy. In quantitative part of study, it is continued with explanatory and descriptive purposes through survey and correlational research strategies. The probe concepts and variables are analyzed in 30 top knowledge-based companies located at growth centers of 6 high-ranking universities of Iran working on electronics and informatics field. The results of the research indicate that achieving knowledge-centricity main phenomenon through dynamic capabilities requires presence of value creation on the basis of resource orientation together with competences. The knowledge-based companies can reach the summit and sustainable success in the knowledge-centricity main phenomenon when they consider two kinds of specialized paths related to the differentiation strategies and knowledge-based strategies. Along with these two paths, contextual factors of environmental cognition, knowledge management and knowledge approaches, and the intervening conditions of branding and brand management, and strategic agility are identified that have a positive and significant effect on both strategies. The final designed model explicates how to gain competitive advantage for the studied companies through dynamic capabilities with regard to the differentiation and the knowledge-based approaches.

Abstract:
To achieve an efficient use and allocation of limited water resources and thus resolve increasing water use conflicts due to fast rising societal water demands, in 2000, the Chinese government started a management strategy of ‘Construction of a Water Saving Society (WSS)’. It is guided by the principle that socio-economic development should consider the carrying capacity of the ecosystem and focuses on institutional innovation, building on the water rights concept. This paper explores the innovation process during the transition towards WSS by investigating the development course of the innovation process during the transition towards WSS, and the adaptive capacity of the existing water management regime underlying the innovation process. Accordingly, an analysis framework consisting of three types of governance activities and factors determining a regime's adaptive capacity was developed, based on the theory of transition management and adaptive governance. The Tianjin and Zhangye WSS experiments were selected for a deep understanding of local innovations. It is revealed that co-evolution of all three types of governance activities that are claimed to be essential for transition has taken place. However, the current adaptive capacity of the regime still needs further enhancement to support the transition towards the desired WSS in China. Finally, some general insights are provided for policy innovations in other political economies.

How difficult is it to ‘discover’ an evolutionary adaptation or innovation? I here suggest that information theory, in combination with high-throughput DNA sequencing, can help answer this question by quantifying a new phenotype's information content. I apply this framework to compute the phenotypic information associated with novel gene regulation and with the ability to use novel carbon sources. The framework can also help quantify how DNA duplications affect evolvability, estimate the complexity of phenotypes and clarify the meaning of ‘progress’ in Darwinian evolution. Abstract:
Complex adaptation systems are the main development direction of China’s current green innovation research. New material industry is one of the key entry points to accelerate the construction of modern industrial system and promote innovation, green, and efficient development. Under the requirements of China’s current low-carbon development, China’s green innovation system is developing rapidly. Green innovation complicates traditional innovation models and their functions and improves economic development. The purpose of this paper is to study the theoretical analysis framework of applying complex adaptive systems and to analyze and calculate the characteristics of the current status of green innovation systems in multiple industries in China’s manufacturing industry. Analysis is as follows. The experimental group and the control group are set for comparison, and the data are organized by applying complex adaptive system theory and data analysis methods. Experimental data show that the coordinated development of the green innovation systems in various industries in China is not balanced, with a difference of more than three times; the parameters of the various green innovation systems within the industry are unbalanced, and the difference is more than five times. The experimental results show that the green innovation subject can strategically interact by adjusting the ratio of resource allocation through the constructed green innovation system model. The green innovation system with complex adaptive system theory is conducive to the development of the green system. It can save about 23% of green innovation time and improve efficiency by about 15%, to promote the development of green innovation in China.

Critical to sustainable agriculture, agrobiodiversity conservation provides immediate benefits and retains options for climate change adaptation. Reframing conservation as sustainable seed innovation allows for a dynamic view of farmer contributions. Sustainable seed innovation entails in situ conservation and the innovation of new plant varieties through traditional practices. Farmer interviews from regions throughout India form the empirical basis, while the concept intellectual property-broad, integrated with evolutionary economics, informs theory. Sustainable seed innovation within India receives support primarily from nonprofit groups favoring open-source systems. Conserving natural and financial capital motivated farmers to adopt sustainable techniques, but farmers believed attracting additional innovators required development of new markets. India’s Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights Act recognizes farmers as plant breeders but does not provide incentive to innovate sustainably. Moreover, agricultural policies reinforced by an underlying discourse where “progressive” farmers follow unsustainable practices incentivizes formal innovations, at the expense of sustainable innovations of farmers.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to advance the theoretical development of the content marketing concept and its integration into high-tech marketing theory, in entrepreneurial contexts and from a business model innovation perspective. Design/methodology/approach The paper provides a conceptual overview of content marketing and business model innovation concerning high-tech entrepreneurs. Findings The high-tech entrepreneurial content marketing (HIT-ECM) framework has five delineating elements with a small high-tech firm as the focal point: adapting content marketing in the business model, customizing content and customer profiling, organizational learning and experimenting with the business model, building strategic networks and content marketing and the small high-tech firm’s business model innovation. The HIT-ECM framework considers how high-tech entrepreneurs capitalize on their capabilities and use innovative marketing strategies to sell their high-tech solutions under unpredictable conditions and limited resources. Practical implications From a managerial perspective, HIT-ECM poses five questions managers should ask themselves when they adopt content marketing and integrate it into their existing business models: how can content create value, how novel content development activities reflect on innovating the business model, how will content development reflect on the business model structure, who is involved and what are the revenue streams of content development. Originality/value This is an original paper that presents the HIT-ECM framework for high-tech entrepreneurs to use content marketing and capture customer value through every aspect of their business operations, as well as updating and innovating their business models.

Abstract Management innovation – the introduction of management processes, structures and practices that are new to companies, is crucial to business success. Based on the existing literature on management innovation and a rigorous theoretical approach to model design and development, a theoretical model of management innovation that is applicable to immature and underdeveloped markets was designed. Using this model, the study shows that the context in which companies operate, as well as companies’ management background (proficiency), are directly and positively related to management innovation. The main implication of the research is that the existing management innovation theory is applicable to market conditions in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina with only slight adaptation. Furthermore, this research provides important insights about the factors that affect the companies’ readiness to introduce innovative management structures, processes and practices.

Abstract:
The article argues that the market economy specifics translates into shifting a focus towards a discrete industrial enterprise, since to withstand in competitive settings, business must adequately and timely respond to changes and challenges of the external environment. A modern industrial enterprise is facing a critical need to carry out integrated systemic analysis to meet market demands, enhance product innovations, trending products in particular as well as to attract qualified staff and constantly upgrade their professional skills and competences by implementing relevant strategies to build flexibility and proactive approaches to respond to socioeconomic changes. The study demonstrates that market demands and the new economic system challenges give rise to certain crisis phenomena that negatively affect the development of domestic industrial enterprises. The article seeks to explore a range of different interpretations to the economic concepts of adaptability, system, management and management system available from academic sources and offers the author's original definitions which laid the basis for a structural decomposition analysis of the content of such notion as "adaptive-oriented enterprise management system based on innovation" which is viewed as a well-organized set of a strong targeted unity of each of the system backbone elements that is able to effectively respond to changes in the internal and external environment through the implementation of creative and intellectual development trends based on the aggregation of the dominant tenets of the innovation theory driven by consolidated effects from active creative innovation. This fosters effective economic and noneconomic accelerated growth through enhanced management performance and achievement of tactical and strategic goals. The theoretical implications of the study by help of structural decomposition analysis contribute to better understanding of the concept of adaptive-oriented enterprise management system based on innovation which is a crucial element in the theoretical and methodological paradigm as well as a framework for developing a methodological toolkit to assess the feasibility and effectiveness of managing transformations of enterprises as integrated business and economic systems. It is concluded that theoretical provisions related to adaptive-oriented enterprise management system based on innovation should be complemented by setting their implementation goals, specifying their functions and outcomes, together with developing and adapting methodological approaches to perform analysis and evaluation. Addressing the above issues will be a step forward in the applied research taxonomy in the theory of economic systems management.

Extant literature suggests that acquisition of innovative capability is challenging: the acquired firm must be integrated to realise synergies, but such integration might jeopardise the ability to sustain its innovative capability within the acquiring firm. However, we know little about how managers address this coordination-autonomy dilemma post-acquisition. We therefore investigated how GlobalTech, a multi-national telecommunications solutions provider integrated SmartTech, a small, innovative firm with an adaptive infrastructure management solution and a customer-driven innovation approach. Drawing on dynamic capability theory (DCT) and focusing on structural integration and informal coordination, we reveal how the two management teams collaborated over a two-year period to sustain SmartTech’s innovation capability while at the same time leveraging it as part of GlobalTech’s position and future path. In conclusion, we present a process model with related action strategies for how organisations can orchestrate dynamic capability to manage the coordination-autonomy dilemma post-acquisition.
