Gallstone ileus is an uncommon cause of intestinal obstruction in Ghana. A patient with gallstone ileus that was diagnosed intra-operatively after being treated conservatively as adhesive small bowel obstruction for ten days is reported to highlight the importance of the clinical information in this condition. A 60-year-old Chinese male with recurrent intestinal obstruction who was initially being managed at a primary healthcare facility was subsequently referred to a tertiary hospital on account of computer tomography diagnosis of an intraluminal object obstructing the bowel. Abstract:
The review presents a modern view on the features of the course and treatment of adhesions of the small intestine, based on modern epidemiological data, accepted guidelines for the diagnosis and nature of the treatment of different categories of patients. It is noted that adhesive intestinal obstruction is a symptom complex due to violation of the movement of contents through the intestines due to the presence of adhesions in the abdominal cavity after operations and injuries. Attention is drawn to the peculiarities of diagnostics of various forms of the disease, which include the leading clin

We assessed the nonoperative and operative management of adhesive small bowel obstruction (ASBO) and compared complication rates and surgical outcomes. ASBO is a common complication of abdominopelvic surgery. Although patients may respond to nonoperative management, many require surgery. We retrospectively studied patients admitted to Mount Sinai Hospital with a diagnosis of complete ASBO to determine outcomes of nonoperative management. Patients admitted with complete ASBO from 2001 to 2011 were included. Patients with no previous abdominopelvic surgery, surgery within the six weeks preceding

Background. The ileus tube has been widely used for the treatment of acute small bowel obstruction. However, it is difficult to get the tube sufficiently adjacent to the obstruction site due to various reasons. Methods. We developed a novel intubation technique, named Deeper Intubation Technique (DIT), by using the Zebra Urological Guidewire and digital gastrointestinal fluoroscopy, where we deepened the catheter intubation, and further compared the effects of DIT with the Traditional Intubation Technique (TIT) on the short-term clinical outcomes of 183 patients. Results. The average intubatio

Adhesions account for 74 per cent of admissions for small bowel obstruction (SBO). There is a lack of data regarding the usage and outcomes of laparoscopy (LS) for SBO. A retrospective review of urgent admissions for SBO using the Nationwide Inpatient Sample 2001 to 2011 was conducted. Among the estimated 3,948,987 SBO admissions, 36.7 per cent underwent operative management and LS was performed in 26.5 per cent with a 22.5 per cent conversion rate. Admissions increased by 3.1 per cent annually, whereas nonoperative management increased by 3.8 per cent annually. Operative management increased
